Content Creator: Travel and Life Experiences

FIV: Hello Jasmin, hello Jonas! Maybe you can introduce yourselves briefly in advance, so that our readers can get an impression of you.

Jasmin & Jonas: We are Jasmin and Jonas and travel since 2019 as a family with our two boys and now two dogs through Europe. We have taken the leap into independence and started our own business as a yoga teacher and photographer this year.

On our Instagram channel @trust.and.breathe and our travel blog we report about our inner and outer journey, we share our travel – and life experiences and want to inspire people to follow their heart’s path.

Independent living: On the road in your own van

FIV: How did you come up with the idea of spending your life in a van and traveling?

Jasmin & Jonas: We have been traveling a lot since the beginning of our relationship. The idea to build an independent life to be able to travel permanently came when we were in Southeast Asia in 2014 on a long-term backpacking trip. Our first son was born in 2015 and through the children we got the idea to travel with the camper.

Having previously done a lot of backpacking ourselves, we liked the idea of always having our familiar surroundings, our retreat, with us when we vanlife.

Solar system, fresh water tank, etc.: Necessary equipment

FIV: What kind of gear do you have in your van to support you on your travels?

Jasmin & Jonas: Especially important for us is all the equipment that allows us to stand self-sufficiently free. Not being dependent on campsites allows us to travel completely free. For this we use a solar system, which supplies us with electricity via inverter, a large fresh water tank and a dry separation toilet. So we are completely independent.

FIV: How did you design the interior of the van to have enough space for sleeping, cooking and living?

Jasmin & Jonas: This year we have renovated quite a bit. Jonas has built a bunk bed for the two boys. So you have your own retreat and we now sleep upstairs in the alcove.

For us it is an absolute gamechanger. Previously, the kids slept together in the alcove and we had to convert our dining table into our bed every night. That is no longer necessary. The dining area can remain permanently set up. Our kitchen is in the back of the camper and feels like a little room of its own, which is incredibly helpful in so few square feet.

The right van kitchen equipment

FIV: What cooking utensils and equipment do you have with you to prepare meals in the van?

Jasmin & Jonas: We have normal pots and pans with us. Our tableware is made of stainless steel. It’s super sturdy and lightweight. Our kitchen equipment is almost like that of a normal household, just less of everything. We especially love our milk frother, for creamy lattes, and our USB-rechargeable hand blender.

The most beautiful destinations & surfing

FIV: Which destinations were your favorite and which are next on your list?

Jasmin & Jonas: Every country has its own beauty. Slovenia, Sweden and Sardinia have been our favorite so far. Since we surf (surfing), we also love the French and Spanish Atlantic coast very much. In late summer we will go there again. We plan to drive along the coast towards Portugal and the next winter we would like to spend in Morocco.

Child Friendly Travel: Routines & Occupations

FIV: How do you travel with your children in the van? Do you have any special rules or routines?

Jasmin & Jonas: Our kids were on the road with our camper for the first time when our “big one” was 2 years old and the “little one” was 8 months old. Our most important routine, which we also always try to stick to, is the evening routine. It gives our children a certain consistency that is often missing in the varied daily travel routine. Since we organize everything flexibly in everyday life.

FIV: What employment opportunities do you have for your children during the long trips?

Jasmin & Jonas: We try to drive only a few hours at a time. Ideally about 1-2 hours at the most. Since the kids are older, they are allowed to watch their series or a movie during the drive. On longer trips, they listen to a radio play, read, or play card games. When they were smaller, I (Jasmin) often sat in the back with them and played something with them.

Childproof in a confined space

FIV: How did you childproof the van? Are there any particular safety precautions you take?

Jasmin & Jonas: The most important thing for us is that we don’t leave any sharp or pointed objects lying around and that we stow everything safely. In such a small space, it can happen that you quickly bump into something or drop something. If that were a chef’s knife, that would be bad, of course. So everything is always put away right away.

When the kids still slept in the alcove, we had a self-built and absolutely safe fall-out protection installed. The same now applies to the upper bunk bed.

Tips for traveling with the dog

FIV: How did you prepare for traveling with your dog? Are there any special challenges?

Jasmin & Jonas: Traveling in a camper with a dog is actually quite easy. It is especially important to always read through the entry regulations of the respective country in advance. Because even within Europe there are some important exceptions, such as in Norway. But even if you want to travel outside the EU, there are some precautions to take.

Popular destinations for vanlifers are for example Turkey, Bosnia Herzegovina, Montenegro or Morocco. We started 4 years ago with our little mixed breed dog and adopted a little Greek street dog in the fall of 2022. In the summer months, it is also important to think carefully about which destination makes sense with a dog.

Often dogs are not allowed on beaches and that can be problematic at high temperatures. We are then gladly at the Atlantic (wide beaches, dogs usually allowed) or in the mountains (cooler temperatures). Greece also went great in the summer with dogs.

Vanlife: Is this something for me?

FIV: What tips do you have for other families thinking about starting a similar adventure?

Jasmin & Jonas: If you only know this lifestyle from Instagram or other social media platforms, you should definitely test it extensively for a few weeks first. Because vanlife definitely has its “downsides” and is not as beautiful every day as the pictures on social media suggest.

It’s a wonderful way to travel the world as a family, but at the same time it’s also very difficult and not the right way for every family. The small amount of space and the many different needs can offer a lot of potential for conflict. But for those who love to be outside in nature a lot, want to travel as freely as possible and can cope with rather “little comfort and luxury”, we can highly recommend this way of discovering the world.

FIV: We thank you for the exciting interview and wish you all the best on your travels!

Sol.and.pepper in an interview – Behind the name Sol.and.pepper are Julie and Moritz, who went on an indefinite trip almost four years ago with their children, their Great Dane mongrel Pepper and a converted van. Julie and Moritz are content creators on Instagram, sharing their incredible lives with their nearly 245,000 followers. In just under four years, the family has traveled to 22 countries. In addition, the two run a blog on which they share their thoughts and feelings. Learn more about the family and their van life in this interview!

The incredible life of Julie & Moritz

The two live the dream of many people. But how did it all begin? Julie and Moritz look back in time with our magazine to the moment when they both made the decision to travel together indefinitely. We also talk about the reaction from their environment and the bureaucratic hurdles involved. In addition, the two shared tips for you to approach such a step. Furthermore, we talk about must haves for such a trip, already experienced adventures and future plans. Also the probably most interesting question to the two, whether they can imagine a return to Germany or perhaps even have already planned, is answered in this interview!

After 1st date was certain: we want to travel!

FIV: Hello dear Julie and dear Moritz, how nice that you took the time for this interview. We want to start directly with the beginnings of your incredible journey. When and how was the moment when you both made the decision: “Okay, we leave Germany!”?

Julie & Moritz: Even on our first date seven years ago, we talked about both of us wanting to go traveling after graduation – preferably indefinitely.
Due to Pepper, our Great Dane mongrel, it was out of the question for us to travel permanently by plane. So we had to come up with another plan. Since we have both dreamed forever to travel with a van through Europe at some point, we decided without further ado to buy a van. In April 2019, we moved with our 5-month-old Solly and Pepper into our self-built home on 4 wheels and threw ourselves into the adventure “Vanlife”.

Photo: instagram.com/sol.and.pepper

Whatsapp & Instagram are great helpers

FIV: How nice that you both could already talk about common dreams when you met! How did your environment deal with the decision to travel indefinitely?

Julie & Moritz: Our friends and families loved our decision to travel for a longer time. Of course they were sad because Solly was still very young and they would have liked to see him more often, however, the fact that we can pursue our dream has raised understanding. And thanks to Whatsapp, Instagram and co. all our loved ones are always kept up to date.

Bureaucratic hurdles to travel

FIV: Of course, traveling for an indefinite period of time doesn’t work without bureaucracy. How difficult were/are the bureaucratic hurdles?

Julie & Moritz: Here you have to distinguish whether you intend to stay registered in Germany despite the trip or whether you want to deregister. If you intend to deregister from Germany, this is relatively easy as an employee. You go to the registration office and deregister. If you are self-employed and have employees, for example, this should be well thought out in advance and properly planned. This step is definitely more time-consuming from a bureaucratic point of view, but it is also doable. On the whole, the bureaucratic hurdles are manageable.

“What’s the worst-case scenario that could happen?”

FIV: We always hear that people want to travel, even indefinitely, but often don’t dare and are afraid. Do you have any tips for our readers on how to take such a step?

Julie & Moritz: When making such big decisions, it always helps to ask yourself the question, “What’s the worst-case scenario?” Our answer to that was, “Return to Germany and find a job.” Many people don’t dare to live their dream because, on the one hand, they are afraid of change and, on the other hand, they don’t want to give up their supposed security in the form of a property, their job or their environment. Once you realize that the most important people in your life will always stay and that you can find an apartment or a job anywhere else, there are hardly any reasons not to take this step. We believe that it takes a lot of courage to dare something new and unknown and to follow your heart. But if you really want it and this hurdle is crossed, it feels indescribable and there are unlimited possibilities.

Photo: instagram.com/sol.and.pepper

Must Haves: family, hand broom, solar system, …

FIV: What are your must-haves that accompany you on your adventures every day and that you could never do without?

Julie & Moritz: Maybe it sounds cheesy, but we have found out for ourselves that it is enough for us to be together as a family. Everything else is a luxury for us.
When it comes to material things, there are a handful of must-haves that we wouldn’t want to do without. These include the hand broom in the van life to sweep out the sand and our solar system on the roof to be able to stand self-sufficient. We are also passionate about photography, a trip without a camera would be unthinkable for us. And our bicycles accompany us everywhere. So we are flexible and get to the most beautiful corners of the earth.

Traveled to 22 countries in four years

FIV: Which destination have you liked the most so far and why?

Julie & Moritz: We have traveled to over 22 countries in the last 4 years and each one has something special for us. If we had to choose, it would definitely be Portugal and Tanzania. Here we simply connect wonderful and formative experiences. These countries have taken our hearts by storm.

Julie & Moritz life in three words

FIV: Wow! In any case, not everyone can say that. Now we have more or less talked about the past. But what is your life like now? Describe it in three words.

Julie & Moritz: Intuitive, organized chaotic, varied.

Future wish: emigrate to Portugal

FIV: And what does the future look like? Do you already have plans for the future?

Julie & Moritz: We have the great desire to emigrate to Portugal and have been intensively searching for the right house or property for 2 years. We want to create a comfortable home to which we like to return during our travels. We also have a few continents and countries on our list that we would like to explore together with our children.

Photo: instagram.com/sol.and.pepper

The greatest adventure is THE life

FIV: Those sound like great plans! You’ve seen and experienced a lot on your journey so far. What has been the biggest adventure for you so far?

Julie & Moritz: Our greatest adventure for us is our life, the way we live it. That we pursue our dreams every day, stand up for our values and shape our lives according to our ideas. And our most emotionally formative adventure on our journey was the visit to a Massai village in Tanzania. We were deeply impressed by the people, their way of life and their way of thinking.

Miss life in Germany? No!

FIV: You are living your dream and have said goodbye to your old life. Are there still moments when you think about the past when you miss your old life?

Julie & Moritz: I think “miss” is the wrong word. When we look back on our past, we are simply incredibly proud of everything we have achieved in recent years and how our lives have developed. For us personally it is very important to reflect ourselves and the things in our life regularly, to see how coherent something feels, to change things accordingly and to develop ourselves further. We are grateful for our past and always look positively and interested in the future.

Return to Germany? Never say never!

FIV: Can you imagine returning to Germany in the distant future?

Julie & Moritz: We would never say never. Currently, we enjoy being on the road a lot and traveling to new countries. Nevertheless, we like to spend time with our loved ones in Germany and appreciate our home country very much. But our next stage of life is called Portugal. With the sand between our toes, the sun on our skin and the sea in front of our door, we would like to see our children grow up free and wild.

FIV: We thank you for your time and the really nice interview. We wish you good luck and health on your further journey!

Vanlife with low budget conversion – You dream of your next adventure and would love to leave your daily routine behind you? Whether it’s exciting road trips, a feeling of freedom in nature or camping in the most beautiful corners of the world – these people have fulfilled their lifelong dream and started the adventure of a lifetime. An insecure life on the road in a van instead of a secure home away from home. You think this is not possible for normal earners? It is, if you pick up the tools yourself. But a van conversion for under £5,000 – is it really possible? Watch the following videos and learn how quickly and cheaply you can convert your own van or car into a camper.

Do it Yourself: Expand your campervan on your own!

A ready-made campervan is not exactly cheap. Hardly anyone has the money for a fully equipped camper completely spare and can start directly. But why not just do it yourself? If you convert a campervan on your own, not only do you save money, but you also gain experience and can later claim that you are travelling in your own converted van. No one can take this unique experience away from you.

The advantages of building it yourself instead of buying it:

Experience: Build it yourself

Craftsmanship experience

Save costs

Travel in your own camper and own adventure

Tip: Roof tent instead of camper

The dream of camper expansion saves money, but also costs a lot of time. A roof tent is often the best alternative to an expensive camper. Quickly installed on the car, from small Mini to large Range Rover. Here you will find cheap models, Made in Germany: Buy roof tent.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58wdcJZB__s

DIY! How much did my VW Bus removal cost?!

You want to expand your camper and wonder how expensive it will be? How much does a VW BUS camping conversion cost? No one explains it in such detail! Here you can see the <hiddenlink href="https://fivmagazine.de/dachzelt-kofferraum-komfort-platz-vorteile/" data-type="post" data-origin="de" data-origin-url="/?p=73212">costs for the conversion</hiddenlink> listed. You can decide for yourself whether you want to spend a little more to make the conversion last forever, or whether you want to keep it completely low budget, i.e. as cheap as possible. For example, you can save money by buying used parts on Ebay, choose cheaper materials or leave out the insulation completely. Watch the video and then decide for yourself which option you want.

That’s the way to save the most:

Used parts on Ebay

Do without isolation

Wood cladding vs. medium density fibreboard

Do without details and storage space

Checklist for the van conversion

These are the costs for the VW Bus conversion! During the conversion, some things must be considered and thought about, so that some costs will come to you. How the T4 is converted piece by piece and what the individual prices for auxiliary heating, insulation, cladding, electrics, floor panel, bed box, kitchen, swivel console, side cabinet and bed are, you will learn in detail and informative in the video.

Important for the conversion are among others:

Parking heater

Isolation

Cladding

Electrical

Base plate

Bed base

Kitchen

Swivel bracket

Side cabinet

Bed

Costs for the VW Bus conversion

The following costs arise if you buy standards or follow the life hacks of mathisox:

Cost for standard products: ~ 7.971,90 €

Selfmade / Low Budget Prices: ~1.434,00 €

Saved: -6,537.90 €

Tip! Kitchen for campers to go

The kitchen is the most expensive item with 851,00 Euro.

851 Euro for the kitchen

Here is the perfect alternative! Are you camping with your friends and don’t have a completely converted van with full equipment? Then you should take a look at this small, practical Kitchen 2 Go. It contains everything the outdoor chef’s heart desires. Table, cooker, crockery, kitchen utensils, food and (cool) drinks all find their place in the practical aluminium box. Due to the compact design, the AIOKS kitchen system weighs just 10kg and is very easy to store with a max. width / height of 50cm.

Fancy a picnic? Even on the road, the small box proves true greatness. Whether it’s a classic picnic with friends or a family outing to the nearest swimming lake – once unfolded, the AIOKS kitchen system offers space for the whole family. Here you can dine in comfort while you plan your next adventure trip under the open sky.

How much does a camper self conversion cost?

Here, too, passionate campers report on the costs of their self-built van. With a lot of time and attention to detail but low budget, the two have fulfilled their lifelong dream of their own van. Even though there were some difficulties in between, they managed to turn a used van into a fully equipped and mobile camper. What costs were involved, what is the most expensive part of the expansion and where you can save the best you can learn in this video!

The result is worth it! The two have put a lot of hard work and love into the expansion and show here how much adventure and van you get for it! Watch the fascinating life of the two wish campers in this video, who are on the road in their DIY mobile:

Van conversion for under €5,000?

Upgrade a campervan and off you go! Sounds simple and doable, but can you really do it for less than €5,000? These two travel enthusiasts got to the bottom of this question. After carefully calculating everything they spent on equipment, fairing, electrics and the like, they came up with quite a bit. Either way, the two are sure that their beloved van “Oskar” is worth every penny. But what they spent their money on exactly, you can watch in the following video.

It really cost that much!

Price for the complete conversion: 5.506,53 €

<iframe loading="lazy" title="Van-Ausbau für UNTER 5.000€?

Dropouts – These people had a normal life with sometimes good professional positions and opportunities and yet they decided to take a different path. Why do you decide to sell your house, quit your job, take your savings and go out into the world? In this article and in the videos you will discover different families, couples, as well as loners, who have dared this courageous step and have put everything on one card.

Family, Hippie & Seniors: 6 Stories

Not only young families are looking for adventure, even at 75 there is still enough life energy to change one’s lifestyle. The escape from everyday stress, divorce, career-related or the desire for more time and experiences with the family. The reasons couldn’t be more different, but they all have one thing in common, the desire to change and improve. Follow these 6 cases of dropouts and be impressed by their individual stories.

Tiny House: Alone in the forest for 6 years

Marc (45) had made a stark cut in his life after a burnout and bullying. He moved to the forest, out of civilization. After 15 years as a golf instructor in the 1st league, he built his own cabin himself for less than 3,000 euros, including the electrical installation!

In doing so, he thought everything through, which is why he placed his bed over his homemade stove to extract the warmth. But despite his self-fulfillment, he had a few incidents that will send a shiver down your spine.
A family gets off: Around the World by Bus

Many people wish for it, but only very few dare to do it: throw everything away and then up and away. The Meinhard family from Lüneburg Heath really did it. They sold all their possessions, converted an old omnibus and went on a world tour with it. For an indefinite period. Father, mother and three children. Read more about travelling with children here.

Since one year the children do not attend school anymore, but are taught by father Axel. There they learn the basics of mathematics, writing and reading, just as the older one continues her education with the help of the internet. Instead they learn something much more valuable, the impressions and ways of life from all over the world and enjoy the time of their lives, while in Germany the winter rages.
Minimalist emigration in a roof tent on Tenerife

Mona has quit her apartment and job in Bavaria and wants to start again after her divorce. Alone she sets off in a roof tent to Tenerife. After months of research and visits to camping fairs, she decided to buy a roof tent, because it is cheaper than a camper and not as complicated as building your own Tiny House. Mona has everything she needs in a very small space. In the trunk she stows her kitchen items and personal care products. Mainly she eats out at restaurants and showers at the gym where she has a membership. Minimalism on four wheels guarantees the change Mona has been longing for.

Their motives were mainly the desire for change, out of the everyday life.

They are at the perfect age and living situation because they don’t have children yet and were unhappy with their current jobs. In total, they have invested 30,000 euros in the car and travel from savings. While this change was quite a shock to the family, they didn’t completely give up everything. They continue to pay their rent in Germany to have something to return to with their two dogs.

From a Sprinter to a Gypsy Snail Shell

Pernilla is a musician in a band called “Safran Sun”. She has converted a Sprinter into a loving hippie mobile. Of course, being a musician, she is on the road a lot and her apartment was empty for days. As a result she didn’t feel like paying for something she doesn’t use. Her concerts mostly take place in Holland, which is why that is her main place of residence. Her plan was very spontaneous and partly thoughtless. Shortly after she got her driver’s license, she set off with her Sprinter, which is why she had to endure a very cold winter without heating during her concerts in November. Today the young musician is happy about little extras like her kitchen, heating and sockets.

On the road in a motorhome at 75

At the age of 67, Gisela radically changed her life after several operations, changed her diet, sold her house and bought a mobile home. Since then she has been living on the road: Gisela on the road. Some friends and relatives just shake their heads. They can’t understand how anyone could live like that – especially at her age. But that hasn’t stopped her from fulfilling her tramp. Her autoimmune disease left her dependent on everyday help, to the point where it changed everything.

Today she lives and travels alone, enjoys the visit of her family once a year at Easter. She spends the cold winters in Morocco and the warmer summers in Europe. Of course, Germany, Spain and Italy are particularly good places to travel around in Europe, because these countries are also good for a short holiday.

One journey was particularly close to Gisela’s heart – the trip to Poland, to the old Prussian region of Angerburg. Her family fled from there to Germany after the Second World War. On her journey she visited her old family home and the church where she had been baptized.

A new start with a camper, van or car

It’s never too late for a fresh start. The travel lifestyle with a camper, van or car with a roof tent is certainly not for everyone, but these examples show that people of all ages, professions and current life situations can make it. Especially Gisela serves as an inspiration for many. However, you have to ask yourself, when is the best time for something like this?

For her, it was just in time to change her life and attitude. The question is, do you have to wait until retirement first? What many families are criticized for, dropping out in the middle of life, leaving everything behind and throwing security overboard.

Perhaps this is exactly an important approach, to use the limited time, to create experiences, to discover the world, which has a greater value than slaving for days for luxury goods and wealth. In any case, the 6 examples provide convincing advantages to think about it again.

Yve’s little pirate ship – a sensational camper conversion

This young lady is also pursuing her lifelong dream! Yve says herself that she lives part-time in a pirate ship. With many loving details she has extended her van and created a living space in which she feels comfortable and at home. She found inspiration on Pinterest at the time. From then on, she wanted her own minivan in a wooden look and jumped at the chance!

Germany’s youngest vanlifer – Alone through Europe

Teacher swaps school for vanlife

Lisa traded her secure job as a secondary school teacher for an uncertain but adventurous life in a van. She didn’t want to work as a civil servant all her life and decided at the age of 3o to take a different path.

Equipped with kitchen, sleeping area and living room, she now lives in her self-built van and travels the most beautiful corners of the world. She started for 5 weeks in Croatia. She realized that this life of complete freedom suits her so much that she listened to her gut feeling and has been living in a camper since then.

She earns her money on the road as a language trainer and tutor. She herself says that she got a new attitude towards life and therefore also organizes retreats for civil servants who want to change their lives positively. Check out Lisa’s van and the path she has taken here!

300 € expenses per month – that’s how cheap Anna lives in the van

Anna also lives the dream of many people: she is permanently on vacation and lives into the day! Just under a year ago, she decided to move to Tenerife. Although the holiday island has not been that cheap for a long time, she can easily live on 300 € per month.

The enthusiastic festival-goer was interested in camping and life on the road from an early age. During an Erasmus year she had the idea for her own camper. Together with a friend, she developed it and discovered her love for the van life. Since then she lives in her own van. She cooks herself on a gas stove, takes showers on the beach whenever possible and generally tries to live as frugally as possible.

In addition, she makes her own jewelry and earns her money by making dreadlocks. She also does without material things as far as possible. This allows her to finance her exciting life on the road. Check out Anna’s camper and her frugal van life here!
