Campwerk – Smell the mountain air, sit around the campfire and tell each other stories or go fishing with friends at large lakes – that’s camping. And if you’re preparing for a trip into nature, you naturally need the right equipment. Now you have to decide whether you prefer to stay in a tent, roof tent, campervan or motorhome. That’s why we’re introducing Campwerk to you today – the company for high-quality camping equipment from Germany. We already reported about the brand in our roof tent guide.

Made in Germany: Campwerk

In Germany, Campwerk is the market leader among the umbrella tent manufacturers. Not without reason, the quality speaks for itself. On my very private search for the best roof tent (for me), I have compared a total of 4 roof tent manufacturers with each other. My recommendation is quite clear, “Made in Germany” and thus Campwerk.

Most campers put their trust in Campwerk, so many in fact that the brand has now risen to become the market leader and Germany’s most popular roof tent manufacturer.

Campwerk itself is full of energy and spirit for roof tents and camping! Many roof tent fans already know Campwerk from YouTube, here they have been publishing videos for a very long time, informative as on the subject of setting up roof tents, product innovations, but also give insights behind the scenes, for example when they travel to tourism and camping fairs or also work on new products, e.g. camping accessories. There are even large roof tent meetings.

Pictures say more than 1000 words, take a look at the roof tents from Campwerk, Germany’s most popular manufacturer of roof tents and folding tent caravans:

Story: Concept of Campwerk

The concept of the company was always to travel the world with the greatest possible mobility and the least amount of time & money. The likeable young men from Bochum had a goal in mind and have thus built a successful company. They started with self-made small roof tents and now Campwerk sells everything from camping accessories to tent trailers. With every product that is sold, there is always a little spirit of adventure, a little spirit and a little anticipation over the counter.

Roof tents, tent trailers, transport trailers & vanlife

Relaxing by a large lake on a warm summer night and watching the stars – that’s a dream scenario. At Campwerk you will find everything you need for an unforgettable trip into nature. Every camper will find what they are looking for in this shop, because the range is large and the quality is guaranteed.

Advantages of roof tents

A road trip with the car, stop where you like and travel on whenever you want – this is what everyday life with a roof tent looks like. At Campwerk, the roof tents are divided into 4 categories: Adventure, Skycamp, X-Cover and Skycamp Mini. The Adventure roof tent is good for singles and couples and the Skycamp roof tent is suitable for families of up to 4 people. The Skycamp Mini is perfect for 2 people and the X-Cover is good for 4 people plus luggage.

These innovative roof tents can be set up in minutes and provide good protection from the cold and wet. Roof tents have many advantages, including that they insulate better, they can be mounted on any car and they protect better from Mother Nature than a normal roll-up tent.

Advantages of roof tents

Quick assembly

Protection from wet & cold

Good insulation

Can be mounted on almost any car

Assembly of the Adventure roof tent – Video

In this video you can see how the 2019 ADVENTURE roof tent is set up on the Mercedes Pickup X-Class. The setup is so easy when you have found a nice place to sleep after a long day. It almost doesn’t get any faster than that!

Tent trailer: Camping trailer with tent platforms,

The tent trailers are camping trailers with tent platforms that take up little space and fold out into a whole room with a comfortable bed. The tent trailers at Campwerk are available in Economy, Family, Off-Road and On-Road versions. Economy is the smallest tent and good for first-timers. The Family tent, with 11 square metres of main tent and up to 14 square metres of add-on tent, is the largest tent trailer and therefore also suitable for larger families.

The Off-Road tent trailers are well suited for road and off-road, extra stable and can drive up to 100 km/h. The on-road trailers are suitable for roads as standard and can also safely drive up to 100 km / h. You can also customize the tent trailers, because they are built especially for you!

Economy: Small, Good for beginners

Family: Up to 25 square meters, For families

Off-road: on-road & off-road, up to 100 km/h

Here you will find a large exhibition and can also see the different products assembled. The shops are spread all over the country and have a wide range of products and competent sales staff waiting for new customers.
Ambassadors – Camping in Norway, Mongolia and Africa

There are various Ambassadors who work together with the Campwerk brand and take us on their travels with their videos. These ambassadors travel around the world with roof tents and film a few moments that give an insight into the everyday life of a camper. In total there are nine people working with Campwerk, namely Anna Jesse, Mario Frigge, Max Muench, Fritz Meineke, Fabio Schäfer, JVGND STIJL, Judetta, Robin Wittwer and Felix Röser.

Anna Jesse & Mario Frigge – with the roof tent through Norway

In this video you get a great insight into Mario’s road trip through Norway. With a bed on the roof in the middle of the sea – that’s the title of his video about his trip with a roof tent. Here you can see how the daily routine of a camper works, from making coffee to setting up the tent. These clips also show how easy it is to set up a roof tent. It only takes a minute to set up!

Max Muench – Camping in Mongolia

Have you ever wondered what camping in the desert looks like? Max Muench, Ambassador for Campwerk, traveled through Mongolia with a rooftop tent and captured many special moments in this YouTube video. Max made his way from Ulaanbaatar to Terelj National Park and visited the equestrian statue of Genghis Khan along the way. The epic landscapes are to fall in love with!

Fritz Meineke – 2,500 km road trip through Africa

In this video you can see how a road trip through Africa can look like, if you drive 2,500 km with the Land Rover and sleep in the roof tent. Fritz Meineke is the prototype adventurer, a man who builds tree houses in the middle of the jungle and sleeps in caves. When you watch his videos, you get a sense of adventure and want to plan a new trip right away.

Roof tents – You want to buy your first roof tent? Here you’ll find our comprehensive, free rooftop tent guide to all models, car brands, manufacturers, prices and tips for holidays for single travellers (singles), two people and families of three, four and five people. Roof tents are available for every type of holiday and trip, even adventure travel. For example with the iKamper, for up to 4 people and extra sports equipment. But more on that later, with the different roof tent types. Which roof tent is the best? How quickly can a roof tent be set up? Do roof tents fit on every car? Our big guide: roof tents, camping and holidays!

Camping test winner: Roof tent! Cheap, flexible + adventure

Did you know, almost 20% (18.9%) go caming every year. A huge fascination for millions, in this country alone. Teenagers and young adults love camping, older permanent campers love caravans and motorhomes. The majority of campers and also adventurers and individualists, travel with their own car and roof tent. Why: No extra driving license, low price, always and everywhere start immediately. Welcome to the world of roof tents!

The roof tent: Our camping test winner

The ultimate advantage of roof tents is that you are completely independent when travelling. Create your holiday the way you want, with your own car and roof tent. Independent of airlines, hotels, breakfast times, car rental times, bus transfers to and from the airport, etc.

Why do so many buy a roof tent for their car?

Comparison: tents, caravan and motorhome

All types of tents have the disadvantage that you need a relatively long time to set them up, you often have little space and you have to carry the tent, equipment and accessories around with you.

Caravans and motorhomes, on the other hand, are absolutely not flexible. They are bulky, you always need an extra pitch, even an extra driving licence. That’s why most people only decide on the caravan and motorhome option at the age of 50 or 60.

Disadvantage Tents:

Elaborate assembly and dismantling

Equipment and accessories must be carried

Insulation from cold and moisture

Sleeping on the rigid floor

Disadvantage caravan and camper:

High acquisition costs

Mostly extra driving licence

Car with trailer hitch and sufficient horsepower (towing capacity)

Extra parking space with sufficient room

No spontaneous tour / change of location without planning

High fuel consumption

Roof tents combine only the advantages of tents and living quarters. That is why they are so popular with camping fans.

Advantages: Roof tent

Why are roof tents so popular?

Roof tents are the perfect mix, compared to the tent types, caravan and motorhome. Roof tents can be mounted on any car, they are relatively inexpensive to buy (starting at 1,200 euros), you don’t need an extra driver’s license and your car only increases by a few centimeters – you don’t have a huge trailer or body.

That’s a lot of advantages that have made the roof tent our clear test winner when it comes to camping holidays!

Low acquisition costs, from 1,200 euros

No extra driving licence

Mounting on all car makes and models

… more later!

Test: 1 month in the roof tent – experiences

Roof tent: models, car, body & price

For the first roof tent purchase, first the most important questions, on the subject of car brands, the assembly with roof rack, assembly times, time for dismantling and advice in the showroom, by the best manufacturers. In addition, our recommendation for roof tents “Made in Germany”.

First a look at the question, which roof tent for which car model?

Car models for roof tents

Fortunately, the answer to the question of which type of roof tent also fits which make and model of car is very simple.

Roof tents fit all makes and models of cars

In fact, roof tents can be mounted on all car brands (list: roof tents car brands). From Audi A4 to A6 to Q7, BMW: X5, iX, X1 as well as all outdoor brands such as Jeep, Land Rover, Nissan, Toyota and Co. to the VW for the family.

The only thing that must be present is a roof rack. But this is easy to install. The cost of such a carrier is, depending on the car model, between 300 and 500 euros and is quickly installed.

All car makes and models

Roof rack must be present / mounted

Roof tent structure, space and lying area

Here I can directly bring my personal experience into play! When I bought my first roof tent, I assumed that it would take me 10 minutes to set it up, maybe even 20 minutes? But in fact, it takes less than a minute to set up!

Roof tent setup time: 1 minute

Especially with the premium manufacturers, Made in Germany, the mechanics behind the roof tents is so sophisticated that it is unfolded without effort, with only one arm movement. Access to the roof tent is then, depending on the model, via a very light, yet sturdy ladder. A few seconds, all is folded out and ready for the holiday!

When unfolded, you suddenly have several square meters of space, hard to believe! There are even models, so-called “folding tent trailers”, which almost result in a small <hiddenlink href="https://fivmagazine.de/tiny-house-minimalistisch-mobil-sein-guenstigen-preis-selber-bauen/" data-type="post" data-origin="de" data-origin-url="/?p=73184">Tiny House</hiddenlink> at the end. Therefore, you still have relatively much space in roof tent, from the models two-man tent, to the family tent for 4 people, with very small children even up to 5 people possible.

So the assembly is done quickly, in less than a minute. I manage it in the meantime Locker in 40 seconds! Super handy, especially if you discover something spontaneously on a route, eg a mountain lake. Stop, turn off the engine, with roof tent briefly unfold, relax.

Tip. Starry sky when looking out of the roof window

With premium manufacturers, for example Campwerk or iKamper, you have built-in roof windows! Especially for the starry sky, for example if you are in remote areas of Spain, Denmark or even more remote, in Norway, an absolute dream.

Now for the cost: what is the price?

People and price: cost comparison

Whoever hears about roof tents for the first time immediately thinks of motorhomes, caravans. So also of prices in the amount of 30,000, 40,000 or even 50,000 euros. Upwards, of course, no limit, keyword glamping,… that’s why roof tents are so popular with campers!

The price for roof tents starts at only 1.400 Euro to 2.000 Euro, for a 2/3 person roof tent.

For a 3+ person roof tent you have to calculate with about 2.500 Euro to 3.800 Euro and for a roof tent that you can use for up to 4 persons with about 3.500 Euro to 4.900 Euro, depending on model and equipment.

Want to know even more about the different prices in comparison, the models for 2 to 4 (5) people? Take a look at individual roof tent types here:

<hiddenlink href="https://fivmagazine.de/dachzelt-2-personen-singles-paare-preise-hersteller-aufbau-auto/" data-type="post" data-origin="de" data-origin-url="/?p=108503">Roof tent up to 2 persons</hiddenlink>

<hiddenlink href="https://fivmagazine.de/dachzelt-3-4-5-personen-familie-preise-hersteller-aufbau-auto/" data-type="post" data-origin="de" data-origin-url="/?p=108514">Roof tent 3-5 persons</hiddenlink>

Tip. You are on the road with a Mini or a Mini learns? There are brown roof tents for that too! Space-saving and folded out, same luxury, same comfort and all that with your Mini + roof tent.

After the advantages, the assembly, the car brands, the assembly time and the prices for the different models from 1 to 4 (5) persons, let us now come to the manufacturers of roof tents!

Roof tent manufacturer: Made in Germany + List

Roof tent manufacturers are many, a few in Asia, a few in America.

Quality is important, after all the roof tent is mounted on your car. We all know how important cars are for us! With Asian manufacturers you save 5 or 10%, but the insulation is not so good (cold and humidity at night), extras like roof windows are missing or the ladder, a very important element, is not long stable and wobbles after a few trips. Therefore, before we take a look at the roof tent manufacturer list, here is my and our recommendation:

Made in Germany: Campwerk

In Germany, Campwerk is the market leader among the umbrella tent manufacturers. Not without reason, the quality speaks for itself. On my very private search for the best roof tent (for me), I have compared a total of 4 roof tent manufacturers with each other. My recommendation is quite clear, “Made in Germany” and thus Campwerk.

Made in Germany: <hiddenlink href="https://fivmagazine.de/campwerk-dachzelte-camping-made-in-germany-campingzubehoer-shop-showroom/" data-type="post" data-origin="de" data-origin-url="/?p=73775">Campwerk roof tents</hiddenlink>

Roof tents (Campwerk.de)

Roof tent manufacturer: List

Beware of “cheap goods” – In my experience, quality is the most important thing and a few saved % avenge themselves quickly when the ladder wobbles, the sleeping surface is too hard, too small or even worse, when it gets cold in the evening in the tent because the insulation is not good, somewhere must be saved!

List, Models & Prices – You want to save another 5,8 or 10 % on your roof tent? Then you will find a list of manufacturers where you can buy your new roof tent. In the list you will find our test winner and other manufacturers that have been rated at least good. Autocamp, Campwerk, Darche, Front Runner, iKamper & Co. – What other brands and manufacturers are there? Here you will find a large list of manufacturers where you can find out about the different sizes, models and prices.

FIV: You sell roof tents and camping accessories. You’ve been intensively involved with camping for years. What makes camping so special and why should I go camping in Germany?

Campwerk: The advantage of camping is the direct connection to nature, the fresh air, the sounds of nature and the beauty of the surroundings. Germany offers an impressive variety of landscapes for camping, from picturesque mountains to idyllic lakes and lush forests. So you can escape the stress of everyday life and relax while camping.

Besides being close to nature, camping is also a super easy way to save money! Camping is often cheaper than other accommodation options because you usually bring your own sleeping space and meals. Because of this, you are also independent of restaurants and services, as you can cook your own meals. Additionally, with many accommodation options camping gives you the flexibility to travel further.

Depending on your needs, you can choose between different types of accommodation such as tents, roof tents, caravans or motor homes. You can stay at campsites near nature reserves, hiking trails, lakes or beaches. You can explore these with a variety of outdoor activities, such as a bike or boat tour. You don’t have to do it alone, though, because the camper community is full of nice people you can meet at a campsite.

Quickly summarized for you – this is why you should definitely go camping:

Relaxation & rest, close to nature – all day long

Freedom & flexibility – travel wherever you want

A variety of sleeping options – but all close to nature

Save costs compared to the package vacation

Outdoor activities in the fresh air

Community spirit at the campsite

So cozy it can be with friends camping, with campfire and sunset.

Wild camping, dog & Co.? Watch out for these things

FIV: What should I look for when choosing a campsite in Germany?

Campwerk: Before you choose a campsite in Germany, you should consider what you need in the area. In Germany there are many mountains, lakes, forests or coast. You can also look for sights or cities you want to see.

Then research a campsite nearby! Check the website of interesting campsites and also pay attention to things like the pitch size, compare the prices of different campsites and watch out for extra costs. It is always a good idea to read the reviews of other campers. There are also suitable portals for this.

Where to? Choice between mountains, lake or rather sea

FIV: Which are the best campsites in Germany and what makes them particularly attractive?

Campwerk: As mentioned before, you’ll usually find the most popular campgrounds near lakes, the ocean, or major mountains for hiking.

One of the most popular places is Wulfener Hals Camping and Holiday Park on the Baltic Sea island of Fehmarn. Many campers go there every year because they can camp directly on the sandy beaches of the Baltic Sea. Another tip directly on the water is the campsite Strandcamping Waging am See in Bavaria. This campsite in southern Germany is located directly on Lake Waging. For mountain lovers, the Campingpark Hopfensee offers a great mountain panorama for hiking and a view of the Hopfensee.

Here you can find more about the beautiful places where these campsites are located

Sheep in the wild: Is wild camping allowed?

FIV: Let’s imagine I don’t want to stay at the campsite. Am I allowed to go wild camping in Germany and stay overnight in the wild?

Campwerk: In Germany, wild camping is generally not allowed unless it is in designated areas or special exemptions. This means that you are not allowed to spend the night outside of approved campsites. However, you are allowed to stand in the parking lot for a few hours with your camping vehicle such as a roof tent, caravan or camper van to restore your driving ability. You may rest briefly while doing so, but you should not appear to be camping there. The camping chairs must remain in the car!

Quick overview:

Wild camping not allowed in Germany in principle

Permitted: in designated areas or with exemptions.

Overnight stay outside approved campsites not allowed

Allowed: to stand in parking lot for a few hours to restore driving ability

During this time: rest, but do not camp (leave furniture in the car).

Camping with the whole family: take the dog

FIV: If I want to take my beloved pet with me, can I go camping with the dog in Germany?

Campwerk: Yes, you can! However, you should find out in advance about the campground’s rules regarding dogs. Look for restrictions on breed and size and how many dogs you can bring. Before you leave, your dog should have received all necessary vaccinations and health checks. When vacationing with animals, you should always pay attention to order and cleanliness, keep the dog on a leash and make sure you have enough fresh water for the dog – especially when it’s warm!

These are the five steps you should follow if you want to go camping with your dog:

Find out about campsite rules for dogs

Watch out for breed, size & number restrictions

Attention. Do not forget vaccinations & health checks

Keep dog leashed & tidy at campsite

Pay special attention to fresh water (especially in summer)

The whole family together – go on vacation with the dog too!

Everyday life at the campsite: Between comfort & nature

FIV: Camping is all about experiencing nature to the fullest. How can I get particularly close to nature even as a camping beginner in Germany?

Campwerk: In the surroundings of your campsite you usually get in touch with nature. At the gates of the campsite you can enjoy the silence of nature, observe native species of animals and experience the magic of sunrise and sunset. Especially nice is always a bike ride in the area. Or you can find another activity to experience nature.

Please always be respectful of nature and leave no trace.

Charge cell phone? Connect refrigerator?

FIV: But I don’t want to do without all the comforts of camping. What do I have to look out for in terms of electricity connections at campsites in Germany?

Campwerk: Don’t worry, most campsites have power outlets. So you can power all your electrical appliances such as refrigerators, lights, chargers for cell phones or other electronic devices.

FIV: Can I just use them like that?

Campwerk: Unfortunately, most campgrounds want an additional fee for the use of electricity. Therefore, you should check in advance whether the campsite of your choice has electricity connections and what costs are associated with them. You can also combine this with research on other additional costs.

Cooking without electricity: gas stove & campfire in the wilderness

FIV: Electricity is all well and good, but would like to cook outdoors for the real camping experience. What is the best way to do that?

Campwerk: When camping, there’s nothing better than cooking outdoors and enjoying the smell of grilled food. Recipes and cooking tips while camping are also something you can often share with your new friends at the campsite. Cooking without electricity adds a special (taste) touch to your adventure. And it’s also very convenient if you’ve caught a campsite without electricity. For cooking without electricity, you can invest in a portable camping stove that’s lightweight, compact and reliable. Or you can just light a campfire.

FIV: Can I just start a fire like that?

Campwerk: No, because you have to pay attention to the regulations. In Germany, you are only allowed to make a campfire where it is expressly permitted, otherwise it is forbidden. This means that if you find a sign at a fireplace that allows you to make a campfire, you can cook with it in a relaxed manner. However, you are not allowed to just sit down at the nearest lake and make a fire. To make your fire anyway, try to ask your campsite owner for permission or you will unfortunately have to do without the fire.

Quick check – here’s what you need to keep in mind for bonfires:

Only if expressly permitted (otherwise prohibited)

Not just allowed in the wild (lake, forest, etc.)

Search for fireplace or ask at the campsite

After the meal: sanitary facilities at the campsite

FIV: What should campers look for in the sanitary facilities (toilet, shower & Co.) at the campsite in Germany?

Campwerk: Cleanliness and hygiene are very important. You don’t want to get sick on vacation. Make sure that the sanitary facilities at the campsite are regularly cleaned and well maintained. You should also check before your trip that all the sanitary facilities you need are available at the campsite. It can also help if you look at photos beforehand to check if shower cabins and such offer you enough privacy. As mentioned before, researching beforehand about your campsite is very important!

Restful sleep in the middle of nature: this is how it works!

FIV: After we’ve showered, it’s time for bed. What tips do you have for a good night’s sleep at the campsite?

Campwerk: So that you can still experience many adventures the next day, you should also pay attention to good and comfortable sleep. For this, you should first choose a flat and quiet campsite or pitch, so that you do not lie crooked. A sleeping pad, mattress or camp bed will ensure that you lie softer. In addition, a high-quality sleeping bag and you do not freeze at night. Hopefully, you can then count sheep well.

FIV: How thick should a comfortable mattress be?

Campwerk: Of course, everyone is different. Some like to sleep harder and others prefer a soft bed. However, if you want to sleep like on a normal bed, then your sleeping surface should be at least 10 cm thick – 12 cm is even better!

FIV: Then I will definitely make sure to pack a mattress with more than 10 cm on my next camping trip. Unfortunately, that brings us to the end. Many thanks to our expert from Campwerk for the detailed interview!

Roof tent 3, 4 and 5 persons: Camping with the family

Family camping – planning a holiday with 3, 4 or even 5 people? Here, too, a large roof tent is super practical, as it offers an enormous sleeping and living area that can be easily folded up during the day and on the road. There is even room for 5 people in the matching tent! If you want, you can add partitions to the whole thing so that parents and children sleep separately, for example, and everyone can have their bit of privacy in the evening.
In the following video you can get an exciting overview of what a camping holiday with the family looks like. How much space do you really have in the roof tent and what should you keep in mind when on holiday with children? Here are ten tips and tricks for a relaxed and unforgettable camping holiday with a roof tent and the family!

Tent trailer / folding caravan: alternative or extension

Additional living space and usable space – If a roof tent is not enough, you can expand your space even further. With a tent trailer attached to the back of the car, individual sleeping areas can be created. For example, parents and children can each enjoy their own sleeping area, or the extra space can be used for playing, relaxing or cooking. A tent trailer also takes up very little space, as it is already on a trailer when folded and only needs to be unfolded when needed at the campsite.

If you are only travelling for a few days, a tent trailer can also be used instead of a roof tent. It still offers the same comfort!

Comfortable and luxurious camping for two! Are you planning your next holiday with your partner? Then you should definitely buy a roof tent. No other type of holiday allows you to enjoy togetherness as much as a camping holiday with a roof tent. Whether your trip takes you to Sweden, France or Canada, or you want to stay in Germany and go camping at the North Sea, Baltic Sea or Lake Con stance – a rooftop tent promises luxury, comfort, fun and pure relaxation!

Here is a quick first overview of the roof tent.

Did you know? Roof tents fit all cars

Whether for your Audi, BMW, Ford or Mercedes – a roof tent fits on just about any car, as soon as you have mounted the appropriate roof racks. In the best case, you can also pack an awning or travel with a tent trailer in the back to expand your living and usage area by a lot. This way, even if you spend several days at the same campsite, you’ll have enough space to relax in your camping chair, play games or cook a delicious meal in your camping kitchen!

Flexible travel: weekend getaway or long-term trip

Especially as a camping beginner you should know that camping in a classic tent is a good option for an overnight stay in nature, but for several days or even weeks a roof tent is more suitable. Sleeping in a rooftop tent is the best way to enjoy the feeling of complete freedom and closeness to nature, and not only travel comfortably and conveniently, but still get the feeling of sleeping in the open air at the same time. Most rooftop tents offer you a panoramic window so that you can look up at the starry sky late into the night and experience an intense and unforgettable time with your partner.

Where do you want to go on your trip? In this video you can accompany passionate campers on their road trip with a roof tent to Sweden and get an impression of how carefree, uncomplicated and relaxed a holiday with a roof tent can be!

Which roof tent? Structure, prices & manufacturer presented

But how much does a roof tent cost? Which is the best roof tent and which car is actually suitable for a roof tent? To make sure you are as well informed as possible, you will find everything you need to know about roof tents for 2 people as well as frequently asked questions.

Instructions: Assembly of the roof tent

First, suitable roof racks must be mounted on your car, on which the roof tent can be attached. The complete tent is lifted and pushed onto the rails, possibly with the help of a forklift if the car roof is too high. However, this is all done during assembly and you have nothing to do with it yourself. After that, however, the journey can already begin!

When you come back to the campsite after a long day of adventures, all you have to do is open up the tent, which is already in the right position, with a flick of the wrist and fix everything in place. The entrance area and the existing ladder may still need to be set up, and then you can climb up and enjoy the luxurious sleeping space.

Equipment and handling in less than 1 minute

With an integrated mattress and comfortable living space, the roof tent can be set up in just a few seconds without much effort and ensures a comfortable and carefree night, so you can start the day fit and alert the next morning. Most roof tents are very robust and waterproof, so you don’t have to worry about that. Once folded away, you won’t need any unnecessary storage space, as the roof tent will simply stay on the car while you continue your journey.

This gives you complete flexibility with your own car, allowing you to park anywhere and stay at any campsite. You can go shopping with your car without a big load to get in the way. Nevertheless, the tent is unfolded in a few seconds and with just one hand movement and is then super large and comfortable! This makes it much more practical and advantageous than, for example, a caravan or motorhome, with which you are much more limited on the road.

Set up in just a few steps:

Parking the car at the campsite

Open the protective cover and detach it from the roof tent

Completely unfold the roof tent with one hand movement

Attach stem with rods

Secure ends if necessary

Lock and climb the ladder

Video! Set up roof tent for 2 people

If you can’t really imagine the super quick and easy setup, I found an informative and exciting video here, in which everything is explained in detail. This way you are well prepared if you want to buy a roof tent.

How much does a roof tent cost? Price & Accessories

Prices – The prices for a roof tent are, depending on size, equipment and model, about 1000, – to 4,000, – euros. Usually a mattress and ladder are already included. However, costs for an inner tent, a mattress underlay, mosquito nets for windows and door, further interior fittings and, if necessary, an add-on tent are also included. Sounds like a lot of money at first glance, but the investment is well worth it, as you have to pay it once and can use the roof tent for several years afterwards without any problems. In addition, you always have your house on wheels with you, so to speak, and save costs for accommodation on the road.

Prices for durable, high quality roof tents:

from 1.550 Euro for smaller roof tents for 2 persons

Fully equipped hard shell roof tents:

from 2.999 Euro for roof tents for 4 or 5 persons

If only a small weekend trip or a short trip is pending, the basic equipment is often enough for many. However, if you want to take on larger trips, you will sooner or later need additional accessories that make the trip easier.

Accessories and spare parts

Even though most tents already come with an integrated mattress, ladder and the most important features, you will still need a few more accessories to get the most out of your camping holiday. Here you will find a list of essential equipment that you could use on a longer trip.

Standard accessories and extras:

Awning / Sunshade

Extension tent or awning

Mosquito / mosquito net for window and door

Inner tent

Protective cover / storm protection

Mattress pad

Wall cabinets for order in the tent

Now let’s recap what the benefits of rooftop tents are and why you should buy one:

Advantages of a roof tent

Advantages – A roof tent is therefore super comfortable, excellent value for money and also extremely quick and easy to set up. You don’t need any unnecessary space for the folded tent, because it is on the roof of your car the whole time and is only unfolded when needed, whereby mattress and co. are already in the right place to be able to sleep directly in it. Especially for 2 people, a roof tent is ideal to take all the advantages of camping, enjoy the idyllic nature and at the same time sleep as comfortably as possible on the campsite.

All advantages at a glance:

Excellent price-performance ratio

Can be flexibly mounted on almost any car

No unnecessary transport

Takes up no space / storage space

Simple and fast assembly

Large sleeping and living area

Extendable with extension tent, awning, etc.

Robust, waterproof and durable

Vacation can start directly

Combines all the advantages of camping

This gives the roof tent a clear advantage in terms of price, time and comfort, even in comparison to motorhomes or a self-built car or van. Low purchase costs, quick assembly and you can start your holiday at any time!

Which is the best roof tent? Variants & Models

Of course, there are roof tents from different manufacturers and in different sizes. Depending on your travel route, how long you will be on the road and how many people you are travelling with, one or the other variant may be more suitable for you. If you are travelling as a couple with your partner, you won’t need quite as much space and can choose a smaller model accordingly. The best thing to look for when buying a roof tent is that it has an integrated mattress and ladder and that it is robust and stable. A distinction is also made between normal and hard-shell roof tents, whereby you can again decide individually which variant suits you best.

This is what you should look for when buying:

Are there suitable roof racks mounted on my car?

How big should my roof tent be? (How many people should have room?)

Hard-shell roof tent – Yes or no?

Is the roof tent robust and stable?

Do I need any other accessories?

Which car for roof tent? BMW, Audi & Co.

Can a roof tent actually be mounted on any car? As a rule, yes! As long as the roof load is at least 50kg, which is the case with most cars. No matter if Audi, BMW, Ford and Co. – you only need the appropriate roof racks, which are mounted on the roof of your car at the beginning of your trip and the roof tent can be set up and easily opened if necessary. Here you will find an overview of all car models that are definitely suitable for a roof tent for 2 people.

These car models are definitely suitable for a roof tent:

Audi

BMW

Ford

Jeep

Land Rover

Mercedes

Mitsubishi

Opel

Suzuki

Toyota

VW

Popular roof tent manufacturers

Autocamp, Campwerk, Front Runner, iKamper & Co. – Since camping with your own car and a tent on top is becoming increasingly popular with young and old, there are also a variety of roof tent manufacturers. These differ in appearance, design, equipment and size of the roof tents. However, they all aim to guarantee you enormous comfort, easy handling and, above all, fun during your camping holiday.

Read more about the different manufacturers here:

Among the most popular manufacturers are:

Airpass

Autocamp

Autohome

Bundutec

Bush Company

Campwerk

DTBD Outdoor

Darche

Front Runner

Howling Moon

Alternative to a motorhome? Cheaper, more flexible & more comfortable

A camping holiday with your own car and a roof tent is becoming increasingly popular, especially for couples! Simply because of the high comfort and the level of convenience, but also because it is cheaper than a motorhome or camper van and is quicker to set up than a classic tunnel tent.

Especially compared to a motorhome, there are some advantages. First of all, you save a lot on the purchase. While you have to budget around 35,000 euros for a motorhome, a roof tent only costs around 1,500 euros. In addition, you are much more flexible with a roof tent, as you can use your car normally, i.e. you can drive as fast and as far as you want and park even in the smallest parking space without any problems. When folded, the roof tent takes up no space and is not even noticeable on the roof of your car. When folded out, however, it offers you a true “space miracle” that is not only huge, but also super comfortable!

These are the advantages compared to a motorhome:

A lot cheaper to buy

More flexible travel is possible

Space in every parking space / on every parking space

No restrictions in driving speed

Easier to drive (hardly noticeable on the roof of your car)

You can drive off directly at any time and start your vacation

Holidays for two: destinations for couples

It attracts many newly in love couples who want to get away from the stressful everyday life and enjoy a relaxing holiday. Of course, it is also a good idea to arrive with the roof tent and to look for a nice, secluded place where you can camp in the evening. A little further away from the hustle and bustle, there are some beautiful campsites where you can enjoy the evening hours as a couple and explore the fairytale city during the day.

Rome: Romantic holiday in the city
