Denmark – Dive with us into the world of Denmark, between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, accompanied by our expert Jørgen Laustsen(Feline)! In this talk we will explore the unique facets of this enchanting country. Denmark, characterized by breathtaking nature, warm people and a rich history, has so much to offer. Let’s explore Denmark’s picturesque coastlines, cultural diversity and culinary highlights together as Jørgen (a Dane himself) shares his deep insights. Good food, beautiful vacation homes and a lot of nature between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea: Welcome to Denmark!

Why many love Denmark as a vacation destination

FIV: What do you think makes Denmark such an attractive destination for vacationers?

Feline: Nature, especially the long coastline and the seas. Denmark is a small country, about 5000 km² smaller than Lower Saxony, but still has 7000 km of coastline, most of which are sandy beaches. You never feel cramped, as there are fewer inhabitants in Denmark (5.8 million) than in Bremen (6.6 million).

There are very different beaches. On the North Sea coast you can find many beautiful beaches, but also a sea that you have to respect especially. On calm, sunny days it is nice to refresh yourself in the water, but if the sea is choppy and the waves are too big, you should not swim. On the other hand, you can enjoy the view from the beach.

Vacation with family, dog & Co.

On the east coast of Jutland and on the islands, the sea is much calmer and therefore particularly suitable for families with small children. There are more than 500 dog parks, and there is usually no leash requirement on the beaches from October to March. There are many opportunities for fishing.

Danes love strawberries with cream; the red berries are sold all over Denmark, often as self-service at farm stores. This is a delicacy that you should definitely try.

Flea markets are almost a kind of national sport in Denmark; they are almost everywhere and you can easily spend a few hours there. Maybe you find something, maybe not, but the search is a lot of fun.

In the larger cities and especially in the market towns there are very “hyggelige” town centers that offer a combination of cultural experiences, shopping and interesting buildings.

The most beautiful regions

FIV: Which regions in Denmark would you recommend for different types of travelers, for example families, nature lovers or culture lovers?

The most beautiful places for … Families & Kids

Feline: Depending on the age of the children: for young children East Jutland and the islands are suitable, because here they have many opportunities for fun in the water. When the children are older, the North Sea coast offers many opportunities and even bigger beaches.

The most beautiful places for … Nature lovers

Feline: The most beautiful is…

If you like to be near the sea, it doesn’t really matter much where you are in Denmark!

Most Germans vacationing in Denmark are on the route from Rømø to Søndervig. Although Ringkøbing Fjord and the Tipperne nature area offer great nature experiences, Denmark has much more to offer. North of the Limfjord, the landscape changes significantly. Sand dunes are much more prominent here, and the old fishing towns are a truly “hyggelig” experience.

Råbjerg Mile, a wandering dune; for children a huge sandbox. At the tip of Jutland two seas meet; a walk (or a tractor ride) is a very special experience. The view at the tip is unique. Often you can see seals in the water and on the beach.

The most beautiful places for … Culture lovers

Feline: Although I was born and raised on Fyn and therefore may be biased, I recommend the combination of Odense (Art Museum, Brandts, HCA Museum and House) and the coastal market towns (Svendborg, Faaborg, Bogense, Middelfart, Nyborg, Assens and Kerteminde) on Langeland (Rudkøbing) and on Ærø (Rudkøbing and Marstal). There are a variety of cultural experiences here. The distances are short, so you can experience a lot in a few days. As a bonus, you cross beautiful and varied landscapes and at the end, with the exception of Odense, you are always by the sea.

Vacation homes in Denmark

FIV: What advantages do you see in booking a vacation home in Denmark compared to other types of accommodation?

Feline: The freedom and large space, private terrace, barbecue facilities (hot dogs, another Danish specialty). Often there is a fenced property, which means that dogs can run free and children can play in the garden without worrying. There are no parking problems, as there is always room for several cars. The possibility of vacationing with grandparents or friends under one roof.

FIV: What tips do you have for first-time travelers looking to book a vacation home in Denmark?

Feline: Of course, the time of year plays a big role – but in general I recommend that you think about your requirements and wishes in advance. How many people are there, do you need a fenced property or not, or would you rather have a pool and sauna? From my own experience I can also say that if teenage girls are with you, you can never have too many bathrooms.

The most beautiful times of the year

FIV: Are there certain times of the year that you think are particularly recommended to visit Denmark?

Feline: Most Germans visit Denmark in the summer. This season is really beautiful in Denmark. The temperatures are very pleasant and are often between 20-25 degrees. When it gets warmer, the coasts are always easy to reach. As in Germany, the weather is unpredictable, but if it rains, you can easily find activities or sights indoors. The bright nights in summer are especially beautiful.

Spring, autumn and winter: Each season has its own charm!

Nature is changing and there are always great experiences to discover (cycling, hiking). You can actually say that the motto of the year is “Time for each other”.

FIV: What local activities or attractions near cottage locations in Denmark do you think travelers shouldn’t miss?

Feline: Of course, it depends on the location, but in general: beaches, hiking trails, bike paths, activities with dogs, local market towns, animal parks, museums and much more. Since the distances in Denmark are very short, as already mentioned, there are many possibilities to find the right offer.

Denmark past and present

FIV: What trends or changes in tourism to Denmark have you observed in recent years?

Feline: Many Danes rediscovered their own country during the pandemic and continue to vacation here. Another big change is the liberalization of cancellation terms; this is also a consequence of the pandemic. Today there are really short cancellation periods, often up to 45 days before arrival. In recent years we have also seen climatic events, such as the extremely high temperatures in southern Europe this year. When it is over 40-45 degrees Celsius and the sun is shining all day, it becomes too hot for some guests. I believe that in the future more guests will therefore choose more northern destinations, including Denmark.

Now another insider tip!

FIV: Do you have any personal insider tips or recommendations for travelers to make their Denmark experience even more special?

Feline: When I was a kid, my parents always vacationed in North Jutland, so it became a tradition. If I’m not there at least once a year, I feel like it wasn’t a “real vacation”. Later, I passed on my love for this part of Denmark to my daughters, and we often vacationed there together with my parents. It’s really great.

I started with Funen and I want to end with Funen. My insider tip for those who love the sea and the coast is that Fyn is the focus of Denmark for porpoises. There really is a large amount of them that you can watch from the coast; a great nature experience.

If you like fishing, the waters around Fyn offer really good opportunities, among other things, to catch sea trout.

Thank you very much!

We hope that you are as excited about the treasures of Denmark as we are. The enchanting nature, the rich culture and the warm people are waiting to be discovered by you. We wish you unforgettable adventures in Denmark! Thanks to our Denmark Local Expert Jørgen Laustsen from Feline!

Vacation by the sea: Baltic Sea or North Sea coast?

Directly on the sea, directly on the beach, …

Vacation at the North Sea

The North Sea coast offers a rugged and impressive landscape with wide sandy beaches and high dunes. The North Sea is known for its strong tides and rough sea climate, which makes it a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts and nature lovers. The coastal towns on the North Sea are often characterized by traditional fishing villages and historical charm. The opportunity to enjoy fresh fish is a highlight for gourmets.

Vacation on the Baltic Sea

The Baltic Sea coast, on the other hand, offers a rather mild and calm coastal climate. The Baltic Sea is famous for its shallow sandy beaches and calm, often crystal clear waters. This makes it an ideal place for family vacations and water sports activities such as sailing and swimming. The Baltic coast is rich in historic architecture and offers picturesque coastal towns with a relaxed atmosphere. Enjoy the diverse regional cuisine here and explore historical sights.

My first vacation home in Denmark: Experiences

Experiences say more than 1,000 words! My highlight was the sea, the fresh air, the dunes and more.

What did I like best?

Sea air, the sea right in front of the door, dunes

Peace and space, also for my dog (Pomeranian)

Swimming pool and sauna in the house

Quickly and easily accessible

Two floors, space for children and parents

My trip to Denmark and my stay in this vacation home on the Baltic Sea were simply unforgettable. The fresh sea air and the breathtaking sea view I had right outside my door were truly magical. The dunes and the endless walk on the beach made it a perfect place to just unwind.

The peace and quiet and the open space were another highlight. My little dog, a Pomeranian, had as much fun here as I did. He could romp in the dunes and we enjoyed extended walks on the beach.

The cottage itself was excellently equipped. The indoor pool and sauna provided the perfect opportunity to relax. The fact that it was on two floors allowed my children and I to enjoy our privacy.

The location of the house was very convenient, just a short drive from many attractions. And getting there was also a breeze.

Overall it was a perfect vacation and I can’t wait to return here again!

So beautiful! The beach:

These 5 places you must have seen! The Baltic Sea offers a lot of beaches. We show you the best beaches for a beautiful and relaxing vacation at the Baltic Sea.

Warnemünde beach: promenade with sea view

Warnemünde beach in Rostock is one of the most beautiful beaches on the Baltic Sea. The beach has a beautiful view of the sea and a great promenade. The beach is very wide and has fine light sand. There are a lot of beach chairs here, so there is enough space for everyone even on hot summer days. The dunes hide the promenade and make the hotels appear in the background. It goes shallow into the sea. Ideal for children and perfect for family vacation.

Seebrücke Kellenhusen: Switch off from everyday stress

If you want to switch off from everyday life, you should spend your vacation in Kellenhusen. The beach in Kellenhusen is very popular because of the pier and the various platforms that lead directly to the water. Kellenhusen is really worth a visit or vacation. Because there you can find a camping site, which is not far from the promenade. There are also enough offers for wellness, gastronomy and apartments in Kellenhusen.

The pier is also a real eye-catcher at night. The pier is definitely worth a trip in the evening. The bridge is illuminated with LED lights in different colors. The color change is beautiful.

Pier Niendorf: Exciting family vacation

The pier in Niendorf is super suitable for a family vacation, because it is quite close to nature. For the children there is a small children’s play structure. At the bridgehead you have an outstanding view over the sea. But also especially to the Brodtner shore and over the beach promenade. In addition, you can enjoy the most beautiful sunsets here.

Beach Grömitz: Perfect as a diving vacation

The beach in Grömitz is very wide and long. There is a beautiful pier where you can go diving. On the promenade are many stores to stroll. I would recommend this place to everyone. Families feel very comfortable here. There is a children’s playground and youth area, as well as a beach volleyball field. For dog owners there is also a dog beach.

The sports that are offered include sailing, surfing and water skiing. For inexperienced water sports enthusiasts, there are plenty of beginner courses. In addition to water sports, activities such as volleyball, cycling routes and hiking tours can also be practiced.

Scharbeutz is located in the south of the Lübeck Bay on the Baltic Sea, in the direct vicinity of Timmendorfer Strand. Whether at peak temperatures or milder spring temperatures, the charming flair of the dune mile, coupled with beachfront restaurants and small boutiques, ideally conveys the casual yet lively nature of the locals. We have picked out the best activities, beaches and also where you can find the best accommodation for you.

Scharbeutz: Activities, spots and more

The pier marks the centre of the village. In the adjacent beach bar you can relax with your feet in the sand with a cappuccino or a delicious cocktail. If you’re lucky, there’s a “Salsa on the Beach” course taking place during the high season, which will give you a real holiday feeling, or you can find your inner centre with “Qi Gong”.

For all those who are still looking for exciting activities, we have picked out some for you:

Dune golf with a view of the Baltic Sea

You like to play mini golf? Then try the unique dune golf course in Scharbeutz, which brings family fun for young and old. You play on 18 holes in front of the blue Baltic Sea backdrop. Unlike minigolf, you play with normal golf clubs and the courses are laid out with artificial turf and must be stepped on to play.

18 hole

Price: adults € 4.50 and children € 3.50

Bicycle tour to Niendorf harbour

Take a bike tour along the promenade to Niendorf harbour, past picturesque dunes. This way you can not only explore the surrounding villages on your own, but also get a breath of fresh sea air. When you arrive in Niendorf, you can fortify yourself with a delicious fish sandwich. Especially cycling enthusiasts can, for example, extend the tour and cycle to the fishing village Gothmund on the Trave in Lübeck, 18 kilometres away.

Trip to the Brodtener Steilufer

The Brodtner Ufer is a more than four-kilometre-long cliff on the Bay of Lübeck and in the immediate vicinity of Scharbeutz. Grab your bike or go for a hike and enjoy the panoramic view. There are two different ways to explore the Brodtener Ufer. The hiking trail above the steep shore offers a fantastic view into the distance and is also suitable as a bike path. The hiking trail below the shore is more difficult to walk on, as it runs directly along the surf and flotsam, stones of all colors and sizes, and fallen trees line the path.

If you have a good eye, you can find amber with a little luck. Whether it is really the valuable gemstone you can test without problems directly on site. If the yellow to brownish colored stone tastes like wood and sounds muffled when touching the teeth, you could really have made a find.

Sushi creations with a spectacular view

Whether the Bayside still passes for an insider’s tip is a question rightly asked. Either way, a visit to the rooftop terrace of the modern hotel in the front row with direct sea view is a must. Delicious cocktails and incomparable sushi are served with the magnificent view over the bay.

Tip: It’s best to make reservations early, because the rush to the “Roof” is great.

Scharbeutz in winter

Scharbeutz in winter: An absolute insider tip and at least as lively as in summer. Instead of beach bar and sun, the elements “fire and ice” are on the menu. The dune mile is transformed into a Christmas atmosphere, thanks to numerous stalls with crêpes or mulled wine to chase away the cold and the ice rink with lake view.

Beach Plans & Co.

Scharbeutz has many different beach sections, all of which are impressive in their own different way. The beach ticker provides the current information about the occupancy of the individual beach sections. The 29 Scharbeutz sections are divided into 5 upper sections, so that you can also enjoy the beautiful Baltic Sea coast relaxed this summer.

The “Hamptons” in Scharbeutz attract the more upscale clientele. Cozy daybeds on the beach with background music contribute to the highest comfort. The JFK Club also opens every Friday,

Other sections invite you to play volleyball or allow action-packed water fun, thanks to the rental of pedal boats or stand-up paddling boards.

Beach section 1-8

Beach section 9-13

Beach section 14-20

Beach section 21-24

Beach section 25-29

The tourist tax varies depending on the season, but is a maximum of €2.80 per day. If the weather is good and you go every day, you can also buy a weekly ticket. Depending on the accommodation, it may be that the fee is already included in the total price.

January – 15 March , as well as November and December: 0,50€.

15 March – 15 May, and from 15 September and October: 1,50€.

15 May – 15 September: €2.80

Especially families love the Baltic Sea as a holiday destination. But you want to enjoy the holiday not only with your children, but also with your four-legged family member? No problem – the Baltic Sea coast is made for a holiday with a dog. In the Bay of Lübeck between Scharbeutz and Neustadt in Holstein there are six different beach sections where dogs can romp and jump into the sea all year round.

Discover already now on Google Maps all dog beaches in the region:

Accommodation & Co.

You are looking for a suitable accommodation? In Scharbeutz there are numerous possibilities to arrange your stay. Whether camping, holiday accommodation, apartment or hotel – everyone gets their money’s worth here.

Hotels for pampering

Room service with sea view? Anyone who wants to really pamper themselves is in the right place in Scharbeutz luxury hotels. The Wellnesshotel Bayside is located in the front row, directly next to the pier and offers a unique view over the Lübeck Bay. But also the Hotel Gran Belveder convinces with its charm, the indoor and outdoor pool and the private access to the spa.

Campsites directly on the beach

Pure campfire romance. Whether with camper, roof tent or the classic tent – in Scharbeutz there are plenty of camping sites where you can enjoy nature. The Ostseestrand holiday park, for example, also has <hiddenlink href="https://fivmagazine.de/ferienhaus-traumhaus-am-meer-see-kaufen-bauen-vorteile-nachteile-tipps/" data-type="post" data-origin="de" data-origin-url="/?p=107203">holiday homes</hiddenlink> if you feel like a little more comfort. In a perfect location directly by the sea, you can enjoy time out here with your family or even your four-legged friends.

Holiday apartment with sea view

Holiday apartments are also a popular domicile for travellers. Here you can furnish yourself individually and comfortably, provide your own meals and, with a little luck, relax on your terrace or in the garden in the summer evenings. Especially for families, the stay in an apartment is ideal, as it is significantly cheaper than a family room or a suite in a hotel.

Your heart beats for the Baltic Sea and you can imagine to spend your life there or to spend regular holidays in Scharbeutz? Then think about whether it might be worthwhile to purchase a plot of land and build your own house there. Maybe you already find a holiday home or apartment that suits you?

Tips and tricks for holiday planning

A vacation is supposed to be relaxing and give you some time off. But if you get lost in your planning, what should have been a quiet trip leads to more stress. To avoid this, we’ve put together some practical holiday planning tips for you.

When is the best time to travel?

The Baltic Sea resort of Scharbeutz lies in the mid-latitude climate zone and has a maritime climate. The temperatures are very mixed. In the summer months, it can certainly come to maximum temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius, which are ideal for cooling off in the Baltic Sea. August is the warmest month, with an average temperature of 22 degrees Celsius, and therefore also the ideal time for a holiday with a sun guarantee.

The Mecklenburg Bay, which is only 5 kilometres away from Scharbeutz, reaches a water temperature of over 19 degrees Celsius this month, so that the water and outside temperatures are almost the same.

But spring and autumn also mark a good time for a trip to the Baltic Sea. The rough, cooler days have a unique charm and invite you to take long walks along the promenade or the beach. However, the bathing season is not yet open at this time, but this does not mean that a dip in the cool water is not possible.

Track the weather yourself to find the ideal time for your trip.

This guarantees a successful journey

Depending on where you are coming from, it is worthwhile to travel by train or by car. Scharbeutz has its own train station, from which most accommodations can be reached ideally. If you live at the end of the town in the direction of Timmendorfer Strand, it is a good idea to drive to the station there. On site you can manage without a car. Rent a bike at one of the rental agencies if you plan to explore the surroundings.

Places of interest in the surroundings

Scharbeutz is a place full of life and fun, but of course it has its limits. If the Baltic Sea town doesn’t offer you enough, you will also find beautiful places in the surrounding area that are worth a day trip.

Timmendorfer Strand

Timmendorfer Strand is only a blink of an eye away from Scharbeutz. If you take a walk along the beach, you may suddenly end up in the popular holiday resort of Timmendorf. Especially when the weather is bad, a trip to the neighbouring town is worthwhile, as you can spend the day there at Sea Life or the Ostsee Therme, for example.

Hamburg

The Hanseatic port city of Hamburg is a popular day trip or even weekend destination for visitors to this Baltic Sea region. For example, if the weather is not so good that you can lie on the beach or you miss it to breathe city air? Then off to Hamburg. Whether wild party nights on the Kiez or coffee and cake in the noble district Blankenese – Hamburg has many facets for everyone.

Lübeck

The Hanseatic city of Lübeck is located in the immediate vicinity of Scharbeutz. Depending on travel time and traffic situation, the travel time can vary, but should be roughly half an hour. Discover Lübeck and nibble the Niederegger marzipan produced there, walk through the Holsten Gate that borders the old town to the west. Of course, Lübeck is also suitable for an extensive shopping trip.

Most beautiful beach resorts: holidays with children and dog

Of course, one of the main reasons that drives so many to Rügen every season are the wide, soft sandy beaches that stretch along the entire coast. To keep an overview or even to choose a favorite is almost impossible. Therefore, we have compiled a small list of the most beautiful, quietest, longest and most diverse beaches on Rügen for you.

Schaprode: Coveted real estate on the sandy beach

One of the oldest settlements on Rügen is Schaprode, the small town. The place has one of the few sandy beaches in West Rügen. Accordingly, there are also a lot of holiday homes to be found here, because all those who come to Rügen rely on proximity to the beach. You should also consider this if you are thinking of buying a holiday home on Rügen. The land and property prices in and around beach resorts are accordingly sought after. <hiddenlink href="https://fivmagazine.de/ferienhaus-traumhaus-am-meer-see-kaufen-bauen-vorteile-nachteile-tipps/" data-type="post" data-origin="de" data-origin-url="/?p=107203">Learn more about buying a holiday home here.</hiddenlink>

Göhren: Popular spa and holiday resort

One of the most sought-after areas on the island is the small town of Göhren in East Rügen. The long stretches of beach and the calming air and atmosphere make the place particularly popular. The town also has a lot to offer in terms of leisure activities.
Sellin: Colourful starting place with pier and dog beach

Also an absolute perennial favorite among the Rügen resorts is the town of Sellin. Because the city has a lot to offer from a pier that reminds of the famous piers from England or the U.S., mini golf or a hand beach where your four-legged friend can really let off steam, the possibilities are almost limitless. Cultural heritage can be admired at the Amber Museum and the close proximity to the Hochufer hiking trail guarantees at least one day of action.

Where you should definitely stop by we tell you here.

From the lively town of Ralswiek you can reach the castle ruins of Pansevitz in just 15 minutes by car. The remains of the former castle are a place of peace and quiet. In addition, they stand for a piece of history, because actually this castle had survived the times of the existence of Rügen as a principality. However, during the Second World War, the citizens of Rügen had to get creative and for this reason they used the empty castle as building material. Thus, the townscape was created, which is offered there today.

There you will find a variety of fine sandy beaches and many luxury hotels, as well as holiday apartments directly on the beach. There are also offers with the long-distance bus, which unfortunately take much longer than the journey by car and train.
