Backstage interview with designer Damur
We interviewed designer Damur exclusively ahead of the Fall / Winter 2024 runway show. Behind the scenes at Nio House, Berlin:
FIV: Damur, how are you feeling today, given the hustle and bustle and the upcoming show?
Damur: It’s a very intense day, we are constantly busy. The Nio House is huge, spread over three floors, which is a challenge. But we are very excited about the show tonight.
FIV: Are you still nervous before the shows, or does the anticipation prevail?
Damur: We are now going with the flow. We have prepared everything that was possible. Now we’ll do our best and see what happens.
FIV: Do you have a routine to calm your nerves before a show?
Damur: No, I just keep myself busy and then I’m fine.
FIV: Where did the inspiration for your new collection come from?
Damur: This collection is very experimental, with a mix of different gender dresses. We want to offer a new perspective, especially as the world has changed a lot since 2022/2023, including our social lives and the world of work. However, fashion has remained traditional. We experiment with styling, jewelry and sunglasses to reflect the individuality of Berlin.
FIV: Have you ever had a creative slump, and how did you deal with it?
Damur: Yes, that happens. But as a creative you have to find ways to recover. Sometimes I need a vacation or simply need to take a break from fashion so as not to lose sight of authenticity.
FIV: How has the fashion industry changed since you started your career?
Damur: The biggest difference is the influence of social media. Communication and the discussion about gender identity and bodies have changed. The world is moving fast, sometimes too fast to really reflect what we want. The fashion industry has become very fast-paced, there are new collections all the time. I think maybe we need to slow down a bit.
FIV: Are you inspired by trends, or do you reject them completely?
Damur: Trends are important in order to understand the market and survive. But it’s also important to have your own voice. It’s about finding a balance to be creative and marketable at the same time.
FIV: Damur, thank you very much for the open conversation and the insights into your work and philosophy!
Damur: Thank you, I was very pleased to hear that.
