What the CanG allows you to grow yourself

Since the Cannabis Act (CanG) came into force on April 1, 2024, adults aged 18 and over have been allowed to grow cannabis at home in Germany. This is a historic change – but with clear limits.

Home cultivation: what is allowed

Legal basis: CanG §§ at a glance

§ 9 CanG: Self-cultivation for adults: 3 plants, not publicly visible to minors.

§ 3 CanG: Possession up to 25 g in public, up to 50 g at home.

§ Section 5 CanG: Free transfer of up to 25 g between adults – only without consideration.

Important: Commercial cultivation, propagation for third parties, sale = still a criminal offense (§ 34 CanG).

Buying seeds: What is legal?

Cannabis seeds have always been legally available in Germany as collector’s items and for home cultivation – as long as they are not used for illegal trade. Dutch and Spanish seed banks are the most common sources of supply. Since CanG, the purchase for private home cultivation (3 plants) is legally uncritical.

What to look out for:
– Feminized seeds: Only female plants produce flowers (THC/CBD)
– Autoflowering: flowering according to time instead of light rhythm – easier for beginners
– THC content: For medical users often 15-20 % THC varieties; for relaxed recreational use 10-15 %

Growing basics: indoor vs. outdoor

Outdoor (balcony/garden):
– Seasonal (April-October in Germany)
– No electricity costs
– Yield of up to 100-500 g per plant possible
– Weather-dependent; risk of mold in damp autumns

Indoor (grow box):
– All year round; 2-3 harvests per year possible
– LED lighting: 200-400W for 3 plants; full-spectrum LED optimal
– Light rhythm: 18h light / 6h dark (vegetative) → 12h / 12h (flowering)
– Temperature: 20-28°C; humidity: vegetative 60-70 %, flowering 40-50 %
– CO₂: Ambient air sufficient with good air exchange

Harvesting and storage

Harvest time: Check trichomes under a magnifying glass – milky-white = peak THC; amber-colored = THC → CBN degradation begins.

Drying: 10-14 days at 18-22°C, 50-55 % humidity; hang upside down.

Curing: Glass jar, open briefly every day (burping), 2-4 weeks. Improves taste and effect considerably.

Storage: Dark, cool, airtight. No refrigerator (moisture/mold). Vacuuming optimal.

Cannabis social clubs in Germany: what they are

Since July 1, 2024, the Cannabis Act (KCanG) has permitted community cultivation in so-called cultivation associations – commonly known as Cannabis Social Clubs (CSC). These clubs are non-profit organizations in which adult members grow and distribute cannabis together for their own use. They are not for sale, not a dispensary and not a club for recreational use – but a strictly regulated community structure.

The legal basis: KCanG §§ 11-26 regulate cultivation associations in detail. Important: Most cities still have the foundation in a transitional phase until 2025 – not all clubs are still active or accepting members.

Step by step: Become a member

Step 1: Find a club
There is not yet an official, nationwide register of associations for cannabis social clubs. Current contact points:
– Federal Association of Cannabis Cultivation Associations (BVCAe)
– Local search via the register of associations at the local court (category associations, search term “Anbauvereinigung”)
– Cannabis-related community platforms and regional networks

Step 2: Submit membership application
Clubs are required by law to verify the following information:
– Full name and date of birth (minimum age 18 years)
– Proof of main residence in Germany
– Identity card or passport
– Written declaration: no delivery to minors, compliance with quantity limits
– Some clubs additionally require: medical certificate (if sensitive pre-existing conditions), signature to the club rules

Step 3: Admission and waiting list
Each club may have a maximum of 500 members. As new clubs are still being founded and regulated clubs are popular, there are often waiting lists. Admission is by board resolution.

Cannabis Social Clubs are non-profit – profits are prohibited. The costs only cover operation, cultivation, administration and infrastructure:

Typical cost items:
– Admission fee: 20-100 EUR (one-off, depending on the club)
– Monthly fee: 30-80 EUR/month for active members (covers a proportion of cultivation costs)
– Per-gram participation: Some clubs charge 4-8 EUR/g on collection (in addition to membership fee)
– Total costs: Realistically 60-150 EUR/month depending on the club and consumption volume

In comparison: pharmacy cannabis costs 8-18 EUR/g, street prices 10-15 EUR/g – social club cannabis should be cheaper, but is highly location-dependent.

Exclusion from a social club

Members may be excluded in the event of:
– Passing on club cannabis to non-members (also to other club members in public)
– Repeated violations of the club rules
– Non-payment of membership fees
– Receipt of a relevant conviction (KCanG § 22)
