Growing cannabis in Germany: What is legally allowed?
Since April 1, 2024, adults in Germany may cultivate up to three cannabis plants for personal use. That sounds simple — but it’s not quite. Months of work, hundreds of euros in investment, and a learning curve that no one can summarize in one sentence lie between legal permission and a really good harvest. This guide explains what is legally possible, what you need to get started, and where the most common mistakes happen.
What is allowed since the legalization of cannabis — the exact rules
The Cannabis Consumption Act (KCanG) of April 1, 2024, allows adults in Germany:
- Self-cultivation: Up to 3 cannabis plants simultaneously for personal use — regardless of growth stage or gender
- Private possession: Up to 50 grams of dried cannabis in your own apartment
- Public possession: Up to 25 grams in public
- Social clubs: Membership in cannabis cultivation associations (from July 2024), up to 25g/day and 50g/month
Important restrictions: No cultivation within the sight of schools, kindergartens, playgrounds, or youth centers (100-meter zone). No sale, no giving away — not even to adults. Seeds can be legally ordered from the EU abroad as long as they are declared as “souvenirs” and are not germinated. Once a seed germinates, it counts as a plant.

Indoor vs. Outdoor: The honest cost calculation
The first decision when cultivating cannabis yourself is location and setup. Both options have their strengths — and their costs.
Outdoor cultivation (balcony, garden): Cheapest entry point. A few pots, good substrate (20-30 euros per plant), and the sun does the rest. Outdoor is seasonal — sowing in April/May, harvest in September/October in Central Europe. Modern outdoor strains can yield 300-600g per plant under good conditions. The downside: visibility, weather dependency (too wet autumns promote mold), and no control over light cycles.
Indoor cultivation (grow tent): Much higher initial investment, but possible year-round. A reasonable setup for one plant costs 200-500 euros. Two to four harvests per year are possible. Indoor allows full control over light, temperature, humidity, and nutrients — and thus consistently higher quality.
Indoor start-up costs (one tent, one plant):
- Grow tent 60×60 cm: 30-60 euros
- LED lamp 200-300W: 80-150 euros
- Exhaust set (fan + activated carbon filter): 60-100 euros
- Substrate, pots, nutrients: 40-80 euros
- Seeds (feminized): 10-20 euros per piece
- Total: approximately 220-410 euros for the first harvest
The growth cycle explained — from seed to harvest
Cannabis goes through several phases that you need to know:
Germination (3-7 days): Seeds in moist kitchen paper or directly into the substrate. Optimal: 20-25°C, darkness or dim light. Once the root is 1-2 cm long, the seed goes into the soil.
Seedling phase (2-3 weeks): The first two pairs of leaves develop. Minimal fertilization needed (or none at all if the substrate already contains nutrients). 18-20 hours of light daily for indoor.
Vegging phase (4-8 weeks): The plant grows in height and width. Here you decide on training techniques. Nitrogen-heavy fertilizers. Still 18 hours of light for indoor. The longer the vegging phase, the bigger the plant and theoretically the higher the yield.
Blooming phase (7-12 weeks depending on strain): Initiated by switching to 12h light / 12h darkness (indoor) or natural shortening of the day length (outdoor from August). Potassium- and phosphorus-heavy fertilizers. The flowers develop, trichomes grow. Harvest when 50-70% of the trichomes are milky-white to amber (using a loupe or microscope).
Drying and curing (3-8 weeks): The underestimated part. Freshly harvested flowers must be slowly dried at 18-20°C and 45-55% humidity — ideally hanging, 10-14 days. After that, curing in airtight jars (ventilate daily for 2-4 weeks). Only after curing does the full aroma profile develop and the effect stabilize.
Training techniques for better yields with 3 plants
Since you are limited to 3 plants in Germany, it’s worth getting the maximum out of each individual one.
LST (Low Stress Training): Gently bend branches downward and secure them with wire or cable ties. Promotes horizontal growth instead of vertical — more light surface area, more budding sites. Ideal for indoor with limited height.
SCROG (Screen of Green): A grid over the plants. Shoots are guided through the net until an even green layer is formed. Very efficient for compact indoor spaces — all bud sites receive even light.
Topping: Removing the main shoot tip promotes the development of two equal main shoots. As a result, two main buds are formed from one plant instead of one — higher yield with the same number of plants.
The right strains for German home growing
Not every strain is equally suitable for German home growing. Important factors are short flowering times (for indoor), mold resistance (for outdoor in variable weather) and good yields.
Recommendations for beginners:
- Northern Lights: The classic beginner indica. Extremely robust, mold resistant, short flowering time (52-57 days). Compact growth, ideal for small grow tents.
- White Widow: Balanced hybrid, fault tolerant, good yields. For beginners with a bit more ambition.
- Blue Dream: Sativa hybrid, very high yields (600+ g/m²), suitable for outdoor. Plan for a slightly higher growth height.
- Autoflowering strains: Flower automatically after 70-80 days, independent of the light cycle. No need to switch to 12/12. Ideal for beginners — lower yields, but a simpler process.
For more experienced growers with a focus on potency and medicinal quality:
- OG Kush: Slightly more demanding, but the terpene profile and effects justify the effort.
- Gorilla Glue #4: Very resinous, ideal for extract production. High yield, short flowering time.
Common mistakes in the first grow
Most beginners make the same mistakes. Here are the most important ones at a glance:
- Overfeeding: Cannabis plants need less nutrients than expected. Yellow leaves are often not a nutrient deficiency, but overfeeding or pH problem.
- Wrong pH value: Cannabis needs pH 6.0-7.0 in soil and 5.5-6.5 in hydroponics. Outside of these values, nutrients cannot be absorbed. A good pH meter (15-30 euros) is mandatory.
- Too high humidity: Over 60% during the flowering phase promotes Botrytis (gray mold). Buy a hygrometer, optimize ventilation.
- Harvesting too early: Impatience costs 20-30% potency. Regularly check trichomes under a magnifying glass — milky-white to amber means optimal.
- Too fast drying: Too fast drying (over 20-21°C, under 45% humidity) destroys terpenes and significantly reduces quality.
Home growing or medical cannabis with a prescription?
Honest cost comparison: Home growing only pays off in the long term. The first 1-2 grows cost more than they save — due to learning mistakes, equipment and time. Those who use cannabis medicinally or prefer reliable quality without effort often find it cheaper and safer to get a cannabis prescription online starting at 9.99 euros via teleclinic.
The advantage of home growing: Full control over strains, growing methods (organic, pesticide-free), terpene profile and harvest time. For cannabis enthusiasts who appreciate the craft, the grow itself is part of the enjoyment.
