Adventure seekers take note! Overturned trees, dilapidated balconies and overgrown buildings. The abandoned peninsula of Wustrow offers a glimpse into a long-forgotten time. During the GDR, the peninsula was a station of the Soviet army, but since the fall of the Wall, the place has been uninhabited and nature can thrive undisturbed. There is a lot to explore – an officer’s house, barracks, a hospital and even a cinema. A real “lost place”. We have compiled possibilities for you on how to best explore the island safely. The 10 km² peninsula is located southwest of Rerik in the Mecklenburg Bay. A land tongue about 50 m wide connects the abandoned holiday resort with the abandoned island.

How can I explore the island most safely?

On guided tours, you can not only let the mystical atmosphere of the abandoned places affect you, but also learn informative facts about the island’s history.

Carriage ride across the peninsula

One way to explore the island is to relax on a carriage ride with a horse-drawn carriage. In 2.5 hours, you get a direct insight into the mystical atmosphere of the abandoned island. From the steep coasts, you can enjoy the view of the nature reserve and the natural beach.

On board the MS Salzhaff

The excursion ship MS Salzhaff allows you to view the protected buildings from the water through large panoramic windows. From May to October, the tours take place regularly during the season. The boat trip lasts about 2 hours and costs approximately 10 euros, children pay only half.

Guided hike

Those who want to explore the island on foot can do so on guided hikes. Attempting the adventure on your own is not advisable, as there may still be unexploded ordnance from the island’s military use period. Additionally, the buildings are extremely dilapidated and could collapse at any time

What is a “Lost Place” anyway?

A “Lost Place” is a location that has been forgotten by the general public and is no longer used. Whether it’s tunnels, airports, sanatoriums, or asylums, almost all inhabited places can become Lost Places. Once people have left a particular piece of land, nature takes over again. However, all adventurers should be cautious, as entering these places can sometimes be dangerous. Therefore, it is important to always inform yourself about the current condition of the building. Additionally, it is important not to leave any trash or cause any damage at these special locations.
