Top Google Questions & Answers: Application

We picked the top questions from Google, here they are, edited and answered piece by piece!

How many pages may the cover letter have?

Focus on a maximum of one page in the cover letter. Always put yourself in the position of HR departments that receive 10, 50 or even 100 applications a day. The more applicants, the less time there is for reviewing a single application document.

Our tip: Stick to one A4 page.

Where does my cover letter go in the folder?

As you can read here in the article about “Application and career” by Alex Fischer belongs in a letter of application:

“Besides the obligatory information, it’s also about the content. Here you are the director of your application. Like every film, every book, the application also follows a red thread.”

  • Address line: Contact details and recipient
  • Date
  • Subject
  • Salutation
  • Introduction: The first sentence
  • Main part: Important soft skills
  • Relation to the company: Offer added value
  • Final part: Finale with climax

Use these points in your cover letter to make it as on-point and focused as possible for the hiring manager.

How can I write my application more professionally?

In fact, brevity is the spice of life. If you clearly know where his or her assets lie, you don’t need pages to describe them. Three or four paragraphs are enough to describe one’s own achievements, strengths and abilities in a focused manner.

Professionalism lies mainly in the details, stick to a minimalist and very clear design. This means, do without different fonts, colors and all other elements that distract from the essential content.

Your CV should be structured and built in the same way, which we will come to in a moment. For your application also applies: Do not use standard designs that you find on the first places of the search results on Google, these use almost everyone.

A small exception applies in creative professions, here you can of course show that you have creativity by designing your application documents. Depending on the industry, the design can be more or less striking.

Our tip: The majority of recruiters focus on your CV, so you need to make an effort here so that the HR department gets a positive impression of you quickly.

Should I use fonts and colors?

No!

What should a good application look like? Use a uniform font for your application documents. Only the font size may vary, depending on whether you are making the letterhead, a heading or the body text, for example. However, make sure that you do not switch between different fonts and colours, as this makes the overall appearance of the application unstable and thus reduces your chances.

Our tip: HR professionals want facts, skills, abilities and qualifications above all.

Applying abroad: Do the same rules apply?

Yes, application documents have become more and more standardized over the centuries, especially since the digitalization is going fast. What HR departments expect is a cover letter, the CV and additionally relevant, that means important, certificates and degrees. If you have been working for a while, also further education, training and qualifications.

This standard will get you the furthest in all countries and give you the best chance of being interviewed by the company.

Our tip: cover letter, resume, documents proving relevant skills

How do I write applications?

Definitely take enough time, as you learned in the article on job applications and careers we linked to earlier, you should be especially aware of your strengths, the skills you would bring to a potential employer in the company.

Accordingly, you should take your time, preferably a whole weekend, so that you can think about it, prepare a bullet point list and optimize and refine it on the second day. Only then do you write your application when you know exactly what strengths, skills and abilities you have to offer.

Top Google Questions & Answers: Resume

What all needs to go on the resume?

There are so many different questions on the topic of resumes, all of which ultimately lead to one goal. How do I write a good resume? What data to put in the resume? What is important to include in the resume? How do I make a tabular resume?

A good CV consists of a structured list of bullet points. This is structured in tabular form.

Note on your resume:

  • Personal details (such as first name, last name, address, contact details, etc.)
  • Practical experience (such as employment, internships, training, etc.)
  • Education (school and university)
  • Knowledge (such as language skills, software knowledge, driver’s license, etc.)
  • Additional information (hobbies / interests, honorary posts, etc.)

Where’s my resume?

In fact, this question is very often searched! But here we are not talking about the search of the resume, but about the right position in the cover letter.

Your CV (page 2) always comes directly after your letter of application (page 1).

Career networks like Xing or LinkedIn, but also other blogs are used by users on the internet to apply for jobs. Of course, data is often stored and the terms and conditions also state this, so you have to actively delete your data to have it removed.

When looking for a job, many people check their own digital reputation for the first time. What content is there about me on the Internet? Let’s assume you have worked your way up from a simple worker to a manager over the last few years. You send your application to a company and it is checked by the personnel department. As is so often the case these days, HR departments don’t just check your cover letter and resume, and your qualifications, they search your name on the internet. Now the big question is, what do they get to see? Your new, extremely good resume with career moves or your resume from 5 years ago? Not only HR departments will be looking for your name, but also potential clients you will be working with for the company. Accordingly, the “digital reputation” is important.

Our tip: In the run-up to your application phase, make sure to check your own digital reputation on social networks, blogs and platforms. The easiest way is to search your name on Google, possibly in combination with the city you live in.

What font and size for resume?

As with your cover letter, use only one font so that the visual perception is consistent once your application is received by HR. Use one of the typical fonts, e.g. Times New Roman or Arial.

What school qualifications in the curriculum vitae?

School-leaving qualifications only need to be on your CV if you are starting out in your career. Use them in the first three to five years, where individual achievements are important. For example, if you want to work in purchasing, math is more important than sports. However, if you want to become a policeman, sport and performance will take precedence. Accordingly, as a young professional in the first years, you should add your diplomas from your last school graduation.

Good luck with your job search!
