Cannabis Prices in Germany: Pharmacy, Social Club and Homegrown in Comparison
Since the Cannabis Consumption Act (KCanG), there are three legal ways to obtain cannabis in Germany: pharmacy on prescription, cultivation associations (social clubs), and private cultivation. Prices vary significantly — and depend heavily on whether cannabis is used medically or privately. An up-to-date overview.
Cannabis in the Pharmacy: What Medical Cannabis Costs
Medical cannabis from the pharmacy (on prescription) is subject to strict quality standards — standardized THC/CBD content, residue controls, certified producers. This comes at a price.
Current price ranges in German pharmacies (as of 2024/2025):
- Dried flowers (medical hemp): 8–18 € per gram — depending on variety, provider, and pharmacy
- Cheapest varieties (e.g., Bedrocan Varieties, THC 22 %): approximately 8–10 €/g
- Premium varieties (e.g., Aurora, Tilray): 14–18 €/g
- Dronabinol drops (5 %, 10 ml): approximately 60–80 € for 10 ml
- Finished medicinal products (Sativex, Canemes): 400–600 € per package, usually reimbursed by statutory health insurance upon approval
For patients with statutory health insurance reimbursement, most of the costs are waived — the statutory health insurance covers the flower costs (minus co-payment: max. 10 €/package) upon approved application. Details: Cannabis Health Insurance: Apply for Cost Coverage.
For out-of-pocket payers, the pharmacy route is expensive: 30 days of therapy with 1 g/day = approximately 270–540 € monthly.
Cannabis via Telemedicine Platforms
Alongside traditional general practitioners, telemedicine platforms offer cannabis prescriptions. The prescription costs vary:
- Initial consultation: 0–49 € (depending on the platform, some are free)
- Follow-up consultations: 0–29 €
- Then: Pharmacy prices as above — the difference lies only in the prescription route, not in the price of the flowers
Some platforms cooperate with pharmacies and offer direct shipping — this saves the need to change pharmacies, but does not affect the flower price.
Cannabis in the Cultivation Association (Social Club)
Since the KCanG, cultivation associations (§ 11 KCanG) may supply cannabis to their members — up to 25 g per day, maximum 50 g per month. Prices are not legally set, but they should reflect production costs (no profit principle).
Expected price ranges in established clubs:
- Reference price: 4–8 € per gram — significantly below pharmacy prices
- Membership fee: One-time or monthly (5–20 €/month) — covers operating costs
- No pharmacy requirement: No prescription needed — only adulthood and club membership
The catch: Quality control and THC content are not as standardized as with pharmacy products. For recreational users, this is usually not a problem — for pain patients who need reliable active ingredient levels, the pharmacy is safer. More about clubs: Cannabis Social Clubs in Germany.
Home cultivation: Cheapest option with initial costs
Growing three plants at home is legal under KCanG. The costs are lowest in the long term — however, the initial investment for the basic equipment should be taken into account.
Typical costs for private cultivation:
- Outdoor (balcony/garden): Minimal ongoing costs — soil (5–15 €), pots, seeds (gray area, 5–20 € per strain). Harvest per plant: 50–150 g dry mass possible
- Indoor basic setup: Grow tent 60×60 cm (80 €), LED (100–150 €), ventilation (50 €), substrate — total investment around 250–400 €
- Ongoing indoor costs: Electricity (around 20–40 €/month for a small setup), substrates, fertilizer
- Indoor harvest per cycle (3 plants, 10–12 weeks): 30–100 g dry mass — depending on strain, light and experience
Long-term: After amortizing the equipment, home cultivation costs practically only electricity and consumables — effectively under 1 €/g. Details on cultivation:
Direct comparison: What is the cheapest option?
- Cheapest option: Home cultivation (after amortization) or Social Club (ongoing)
- Best quality assurance: Pharmacy (standardized, certified)
- Best option for patients with statutory health insurance reimbursement: Pharmacy (costs largely covered)
- Fastest availability without prescription: Social Club (membership required)
