She started building her small business with YouTube videos and taught herself everything about undercoat care up to the perfect cut. At the age of 30, she then founded her own salon Fellgeflüster. We have asked our dog groomer from Cologne several questions about her life, the founding of her grooming salon, and the most popular dog breeds in Cologne. How did you come to open a dog grooming business?

I completed a commercial apprenticeship in the personnel department and worked in an office for over 10 years. But that was absolutely not my world, so I followed my heart’s desire to work with animals. I grew up with animals from a young age. Our family had many Rottweilers. I always had horses, guinea pigs, mice, hamsters, fish, and birds. I love dogs more than people, and so it was clear to me – now or never.

On my 30th birthday, I fulfilled my heart’s desire and completed training to become a dog groomer. After that, nothing stood in the way of starting my own business. All that was left was to find the right location.

What inspired you the most to open your own dog grooming salon?

My Poodle mix Meeko. When he was a puppy, I was always bothered by his mats, and I started grooming him. Then the dogs of friends, and their friends. I watched countless videos on YouTube of Asian groomers and loved the perfection of their work.

I wanted to turn shaggy dogs into little bears too. Today I know that the job is harder than just “making cute little bears.” Not every dog is as happy to see me as I am to see them, not every dog likes to be touched, not every dog is willing to stand still on the table for an hour. Being a dog groomer is not just about putting pink clips in their hair, but also physically demanding work, (sometimes getting a 60 kg dog to step into a bathtub).

And how did you come up with the name?

A tough question, my husband and I made lists for weeks and then it just came to us. I think the name “Fellgeflüster” describes me very well because I talk a lot to the dogs and love to whisper sweet things to them.

Which dog breeds are especially popular in Cologne?

Predominantly small breeds like Maltese and Yorkshire Terriers. At the moment, however, there is also a real boom in Poodle mixes such as Maltipoos, Doodels, and Miniature Spitz. Fortunately, the trend is now also towards rescue dogs. More and more people are realizing that wonderful dogs are sitting in our German shelters and in the euthanasia centers abroad, waiting to be adopted.
That makes me very happy! Every rescue dog deserves their own couch. This applies not only to dogs, but also cats or small animals deserve a second chance.

Have you ever been in another city where a particular dog breed was especially popular?

Last summer we were in Munich and saw a lot of Labradors and Dachshunds there.

What are you especially proud of, what have you already achieved?

I’m proud of starting my own business during the pandemic without knowing if it would work, and of following my heart. There is no day when I come home without feeling that I have taken the right path.
And my family. They worked 24 hours a day for a month in my salon to turn a raw space into my own kingdom.
