Launched in 1955, the GMT-Master – originally designed as a navigation aid for pilots traveling around the world for their work – was created to display the time in two different time zones simultaneously.
In the tradition of the original model, the GMT-Master II was first introduced in 1982 and is aimed at a broader audience. Thanks to its new movement offering greater ease of use, as well as its improved features, durability and striking aesthetics, this watch-belt is becoming increasingly popular among many travelers around the world.
GMT-Master : a legendary watch
The L’Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master was launched in 1955, at a time when international air travel was rapidly developing.
When the Concorde, the first supersonic passenger jet, made its final test flights in the 1960s, Rolex proudly announced that both the British and French test pilots were wearing a GMT-Master watch. This solidified the status of the GMT-Master.
Original 1955 model: classic in bicolor
In the original 1955 model, the 24-hour bezel disc was divided into two halves – one, red, corresponding to daytime hours, the other, blue, to nighttime hours. Over time, the numeric disc has appeared in various color combinations. Initially, it was made of plexiglass. In 1959, it was replaced by an anodized aluminum disc. Then, in 2005, the high-tech ceramic numeric disc was introduced.

Design: Possible combinations and technical features
Display: Two time zones
On the road, travelers need to take into account two time zones at the same time. The GMT-Master II, with its traditional hour, minute and second hands, its triangular 24-hour hand and the Cerachrom bezel with 24-hour graduation that can be rotated in both directions, offers an overview of the local time and reference time or the local time and the time in another time zone at the same time.
An additional pointer
In addition to the traditional hour, minute, and second hands, the GMT-Master II features an additional hand with a arrow-shaped tip that completes one full revolution around the dial in 24 hours, and a 24-hour graduated bezel that rotates in both directions. A distinctive 24-hour hand indicates the reference time, which can be read on the bezel graduation and corresponds to the time in the first time zone (for example, the place of residence).
Feature: Bicolour Bezel
The legendary bicolour bezel makes the GMT-Master II unique. This bidirectional rotating bezel is equipped with a 24-hour Cerachrom graduated dial, made from an extremely hard ceramic using a process developed by Rolex. It is made from a single piece, is exceptionally scratch-resistant, has excellent corrosion resistance, and is highly resistant to discoloration.

The bicolor Cerachrom dial is divided into two halves: one corresponds to daytime hours, the other to nighttime hours. Rolex has developed an exclusive and patented process to produce the Cerachrom dial in red and blue – the original colors of the GMT-Master.
The numerals and markings are injected into the ceramic, then coated with a layer of gold or platinum just one micrometer thick using a PVD (physical vapor deposition) process. During the final polishing, the metallic layer is removed from the surface of the numeric disc and the ceramic shines brightly.
Movement calibre 3285
The calibre 3285 is a new-generation movement fully developed and manufactured by Rolex. This automatic-winding mechanical movement is a technical masterpiece that offers fundamental advances in terms of accuracy, ease of use and reliability, as well as shock resistance and immunity to magnetic fields. The calibre 3285 has a power reserve of approximately 70 hours.
The calibre 3285 allows travellers to easily set their local time using the winding crown, without stopping the watch or moving the 24-hour hand. This enables them to read their local time and their “home” time simultaneously. The date change is linked to the traditional hour hand (local time).
Choice of bracelet
The 18-carat gold versions of the GMT-Master II are equipped with the three-link Oyster bracelet, while the stainless steel Oystersteel versions are available with a five-link Jubilee bracelet. The GMT-Master II was first introduced in 2019 in a version that combines the Jubilee bracelet, stainless steel Oystersteel, and a Cerachrom blue and black ceramic bezel.
In addition, both the Oyster and Jubilee bracelets feature the Oysterlock safety clasp developed by Rolex, which prevents accidental opening. They are also equipped with the Easylink system, which allows the bracelet to be extended by approximately 5 mm to ensure optimal wearing comfort.
Special Edition: Meteorite Dial
Launched in 2019, the GMT-Master II in 18-carat white gold features, for the first time, a meteorite dial. This dial is made from an extremely rare piece of an iron meteorite that has traveled billions of kilometers before reaching Earth. During its journey through the solar system, the metals that make up the meteorite – primarily iron and nickel – gradually crystallize and form metallic structures. These natural patterns make each meteorite dial from Rolex unique.
