Baltic Sea or North Sea – A vacation at the coast is for many people the epitome of relaxation and recreation! Germany offers two beautiful coastal regions to choose from: the North Sea in the north-west and the Baltic Sea in the north-east of the country. But which coast fits best to your ideas of the perfect vacation? Should it be a camping adventure or do you prefer a comfortable vacation home? In this article, we compare the two coasts and present different ways of spending your vacation there.

The North Sea: Robust and Refreshing

Nature experience: The North Sea inspires with its untouched nature. You can go on long hikes in the national parks, observe the wildlife and enjoy the fresh sea air.

Waves and tides: The strong tides of the North Sea offer a fascinating natural spectacle. You can go on mudflat walks and experience the ebb and flow of the tide up close.

Fresh fish: The North Sea is known for its excellent fish. Be sure to try the regional specialties such as fish rolls and labskaus.

Disadvantages: More turbulent weather

Strong sea climate: The weather at the North Sea can be fickle, and the strong winds can be challenging if you are sensitive to wind.

Location in the north-west of France

The French peninsula is full of culture, as the Bretons are particularly proud of their country. The relationship between Brittany and France is similar to that between Spain and Catalonia. You know me, you live together, but you don’t really feel like you belong to the rest of the country. Nevertheless, French is spoken here, of course, and also otherwise Brittany is not so different from the rest of France.

Best time for unforgettable trips to Brittany

At the very beginning, it should be mentioned that Brittany is by no means known for its maximum temperatures in France. Rather, you’ll find a mild, pleasant climate here, which rarely exceeds 30 degrees Celsius even in summer. The masses of tourists are attracted every year mainly by the impressive cliffs and friendly inhabitants. The region is especially popular for camping holidays in France.

Weather map for current temperatures

Maybe you’re thinking about going to one of the beautiful places on the French coast soon, or you’re already sitting in the car on the direct way to Brest, but you’ve completely forgotten to check the weather? No problem, we provide you with current temperatures and all other relevant information about the current wind and weather situation in Brittany.

Getting there: Travel time, stops and more

Before you even think about your accommodation, the very first question is: How do I get to Brittany? Of course, there are many different options, all of which will get you to Brest, Crozon or wherever else you want to go in the northwest of France. Of course, public transport is limited, especially in rural areas, but there are many other options to get you from A to B here.

By car: tranquil route through beautiful French small towns

Exploring Brittany by car is a particularly good option if you want to get around quickly and keep all your freedoms free while you’re there. However, the drive from Germany to Brittany is not quite short. From Saarbrücken, one drives straight over the A4 past Reims and Paris to Rennes, the capital of Brittany. But even if one is already at the German-French border and passed Saarbrücken in France, one still has at least 7 hours to drive to Rennes.

Here, a small stopover is a good idea, so you can not only see the northwest, but also explore the rest of France for a little moment. For example, the small town of Le Mans is located directly on the way to Brittany. This attracts with historical, French buildings that make this small town particularly contemplative. The city itself can be easily explored with the tram and the next day it goes on to Brittany.

By train: fast transport with a stopover in Paris

Also by TGV, the French high-speed train network, you are in Rennes within a very short time. Small catch: The train to Rennes does not depart in Paris from the same station at which the TGV arrives from Germany. But here, the possibility to get to know the streets of Paris more closely opens up. On the way from one station to the other, one passes the beautiful sandstone buildings of the capital, sees museums, shops and the way even leads past the famous Notre Dame. A piece of the French metropolis can be included in the trip here quite relaxed between two train connections.

The optimal route to the coast to Brest

Unfortunately, when you come to Rennes, you haven’t quite arrived at the most beautiful part of Brittany. While the capital of the region naturally attracts with cultural programs and a beautiful cityscape with a mix of modern and classical architecture, most people come to Brittany to take a closer look at the impressive coasts.

The largest coastal city in the Breton region is Brest. With just under 140,000 inhabitants and as a research and university location, it is still a very inviting city that also has a lot to offer in terms of cuisine, but more on that later. Fortunately, from Rennes, the train as also the car brings one on a fast way to the most western city of France. Within 2 1/2 hours, one arrives relaxed at the coast.

Cultural diversity in the North-West of France: culinary and local experiences

The national pride of the Bretons is not only based on the special location as a peninsula, but also on the culinary specialties, the breathtaking nature and other attractions that you can only see in Brittany. What you should not miss at all, we tell you here.

Typical dishes: lobster, oysters, cider

The rest of France drinks wine, in Brittany they drink cider, a kind of apple wine, and in the most different versions. On the one hand, of course, the gently tart classic, but especially for variants with honey and currant liqueur, the coastal region is known. Every apple fan is well served here.

The favorable location directly on the sea promises excellent seafood and fish. Especially lobster and oysters, which are already considered a delicacy, are available here in particularly good quality. Friends of luxurious dishes will get their money’s worth here, but also a little more down-to-earth you can get the national specialties, for example in the form of mules frites, so scallops with fries, which are often served with mayonnaise and are available even in the most elegant restaurants.

Finally, the absolute insider tip. No one should leave Brittany without trying this dish at least once. France is known worldwide as the home of crêpes, but the Bretons have their very own version of the specialty. Made from buckwheat flour, the batter is darker than standard crêpes and the thin pancakes also differ in name, as the Bretons love their savoury filled galettes. Especially with fish and horseradish, but also other exquisite combinations. All in all, Brittany is definitely the place to be for gourmets.

Activities and Sightseeing: Sailing trips, flowering garden and idyllic hiking.

Whether it’s hiking on the cliffs of Brittany or relaxing on the beach, the region of France offers many relaxing and time-consuming activities. In addition to the most beautiful areas you must visit, we tell you what else you can do in Brittany to make your holiday unforgettable.

Activity number one when it comes to fun and action is sailing. The geographical position of the region makes it predestined for everything that falls into the area of boats. People especially often come here to skipper and get their sailing license in idyllic surroundings. All along the coast you will find sailing schools and boat rentals that will let you live out your exciting hobby. For those who like it a bit more luxurious, you can rent a private yacht here to pamper yourself.

All over the world, France is known for its colorful flower fields, which were used in the past and still today for perfume production. But also castles and fortresses from the Middle Ages had their own gardens, so that a committee was formed in France, which fulfills the task of preserving exactly these. La Domaine du Montmarin is particularly recommended. From May to August the gardens are in full bloom, but beware: the beautiful fields are unfortunately not allergy friendly.

Also a must-visit spot is the pink granite coast along the Atlantic border of the region that offers simply indescribable beaches of sand and gravel. Here you want to enjoy the sunset with a glass of Kir Breton. There are also lighthouses at regular intervals, called phare in French, which promise particularly beautiful holiday photos.

The small bay of Mont-Saint-Michel is not to be missed. Above the beach, the historical city walls of the castle tower up and offer a unique view over the Atlantic. But Mont-Saint-Michel is not any more an insider tip for a long time, that is why one unfortunately cannot stroll quietly and undisturbed through the little town. Nevertheless, a trip here is worth it all the time!

Vacation in Belgium – Whether alone, as a couple or with child and cone: The small country west of Germany has some lovers, because just like in the Netherlands you can find here also beautiful coastal cities with North Sea access and endless sandy beaches. Many towns in the interior and towards the coast were largely spared during the Second World War and for this reason you can still find medieval buildings and the city layout is also based on the classic market centre. Which places you should not miss in Belgium and what you can experience there, we tell you in this article.

Belgium: French fries with strong beer on the coast

The beautiful neighboring country of Belgium is often underestimated by holidaymakers. Whether this is due to the small size, or the fact that unfortunately not many travel guides and tour operators Belgium headed, can not be so clear.

Despite all our doubts, we are still fans of this small country that has so many facets. For example, there are 3 national languages in Belgium: Flemish, French and Belgian. Also, the small country is considered the birthplace of an absolute favorite when it comes to fried food: French fries. If you want to try them the classic way, order a portion with mayonnaise and peanut sauce.

11.45 million inhabitants

Area: 30.688 km²

Blankenberge: coastal town with promenade

The town on the coast in the northwest of the country is very popular with beach holidaymakers. Especially families with children are drawn to the coastal town in search of fine sandy beaches with a pleasant sea breeze. Children’s entertainment is very important here, so the little ones have a lot of fun at Kidplay Blankenberge and the local Sea Life fascinates parents and children alike.

Map: Beach promenade and sports beach

If you decide to visit Blankenese, we strongly recommend that you take the time to walk up and down the promenade for a while. There you will find cafes, bars and bakeries that will introduce you to the culinary diversity of the country. You’ll also find small, independent shops where you’ll definitely find something for your wardrobe.

Tour: Beach loungers and sunshine

The colorful buildings of the beach promenade shine especially colorful in summer, when the sun is at its peak and the sky is bathed in a beautiful blue. The sea gently murmurs in the background and the sun sizzles on your skin. Don’t forget your sunscreen, because you’ll want to spend as much time outdoors as possible. See for yourself and let yourself be captured by the magic of the place:

Bredene: Holiday by the sea

When looking for the most beautiful beaches in Belgium, you often come across Bredene and the beach of the same name. We tell you whether the place is suitable for a longer stay, which places are nearby and what you should not miss here.

Map: Place at Fort Napoleon

Although the beach of Bredene is always suggested when looking for suitable holiday spots in Belgium, we would not strongly advise you to spend a longer holiday here. However, a trip to this beach is well worth the drive and nearby you will also find Napoleon’s Fort, which of course tells about the former French ruler, but there are also hills to climb for an impressive view.

Tour: Green dunes and sandy beach

In Bredene you can look out over the sea for miles and miles, and the beach you walk along seems to be at least as long. That’s exactly why you come here, because the medieval cities that Belgium is so famous for are only a short distance away. See for yourself what awaits you:

Bruges: Best beer and historic buildings

Besides Brussels, Ghent and Bruges are the most famous cities in Belgium. We have chosen Bruges specifically to give you a closer look at the city, because the location very close to the North Sea coast opens up many possibilities for leisure activities. We’ll tell you more about it here.

Map: City with impressive basilica

Not far from Blankenberge lies the tranquil town of Bruges. With its medieval town centre and narrow streets, this town has often been the setting for several films. The classic market square around the town hall and the basilica, which reflect the layout of medieval settlements, is a particular highlight.

Tour: tranquil town centre with Belgian charm

The city in Belgium is simply gorgeous and one is really not surprised that so many tourists feel comfortable here. The city is crisscrossed by canals, from which you can easily visit the historic buildings. Regular boat tours make it possible. We also recommend visiting the Bruggse Zot brewery to get a first-hand experience of Belgian beer culture. The roadside bars and pubs offer a range of different beers to try.

See for yourself:

Denmark: A Kingdom in the North

Why do we love Denmark?

Beautiful coastal landscapes: Baltic Sea and North Sea

Denmark is characterized by a breathtaking coastal landscape. The more than 7,000 kilometers of coastline stretch along the North Sea and the Baltic Sea and offer a wealth of natural wonders. You’ll find not only vast sandy beaches, but also unique dune formations sculpted by wind and waves. The picturesque coastal landscapes invite beach lovers to sunbathe and swim. Water sports enthusiasts can enjoy sailing, surfing and kite surfing. Nature lovers will find abundant wildlife in the coastal areas and have the opportunity to bird watch and hike through nature reserves.

Right to the big question: What suits you better, the <hiddenlink href="https://fivmagazine.de/ostsee-oder-nordsee-camping-ferienhaus-urlaub-machen-reise-check/" data-type="post" data-origin="de" data-origin-url="/?p=182790">Baltic Sea or the North Sea?</hiddenlink>

Cities and Culture: Old Town & Street Food

Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, is a cultural gem. The city is peppered with impressive museums, including the National Museum and the National Museum of Denmark, which offer a glimpse into the country’s rich history. Historic landmarks such as the Little Mermaid statue and Rosenborg Castle are world-renowned. The vibrant art and music scene makes Copenhagen a hotspot for creative minds. Scandinavian design is a hallmark of the city, and you can discover unique artwork and design products in the many stores and galeries. Copenhagen’s gastronomic scene is also top-notch, from traditional Danish dishes to international delicacies.

More on the most popular destination, Copenhagen, in a moment!

Outdoor activities: beach, dunes, nature

Denmark offers a variety of outdoor activities for adventure seekers. In addition to the popular cycling, there are great opportunities for hiking, fishing, sailing and windsurfing. The country’s landscape is lined with nature reserves and national parks, which are ideal for exploring the local flora and fauna. You can hike through dense forests, along rivers and lakes, or venture into the waters for fishing or water sports.

Relaxation and “Hygge

Denmark is famous for its concept of “hygge”. This word stands for coziness and relaxation. The atmosphere in the coastal towns and the typical Danish vacation homes radiates exactly this feeling. There is nothing like feeling the wind in your hair while walking along the beach and then stopping at a cozy café or your <hiddenlink href="https://fivmagazine.de/ferienhaus-daenemark-familie-hund-erfahrungsbericht-ferienhaus-checkliste/" data-type="post" data-origin="de" data-origin-url="/?p=182783">Danish vacation home</hiddenlink> and relaxing with a cup of coffee or tea. This relaxed way of life attracts many visitors who want to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Child friendliness: family vacation

Denmark is an extremely child-friendly country. Many resorts and cities offer a wealth of activities and attractions tailored specifically for families. Theme parks such as Legoland and animal parks provide hours of entertainment for children of all ages. The child-friendly beaches are safe and offer shallow water for splashing and playing.

Short distances: Experience a lot

The small size of Denmark makes it easy to explore different regions of the country during a vacation. Within short distances you can travel from the coasts to the cities and further to the rural areas. This allows you to enjoy a wide range of experiences in a relatively short period of time without having to travel long distances. You can easily move from the beaches of the North Sea to the historical sites of Copenhagen, experiencing the country’s scenic diversity.

This brings us directly to one of the hotspots in Denmark: Copenhagen.

Copenhagen: city trip to the capital

Romantic towns, mountains, beaches – Slovenia offers about everything you could want for your summer holiday. The small country bordering Croatia is nevertheless not yet besieged by mass tourism! That’s why it’s the perfect place to just switch off. The best way to explore the idyll of the country is with a motorhome or tent, and above all you are always flexible. Doesn’t one like it in that place right now or wants to see something new? No problem, you pack your things together, sit down in your car and the tour continues. Since the distance to Slovenia is very long depending on where you start in Germany, it is advisable to make a stop in between.

The highlights of Slovenia

Romantic moments in Bled

https://www.instagram.com/p/BWN3_stgjF-/

This sweet and romantic village, just in the north of the country, is characterized by its beautiful alpine lake. But not only that, in the middle of the lake there is a small island with a church. The village is very small and manageable, but that’s exactly what it is. Everyone in this place simply enjoys the lake with the beautiful church in the middle of the island. Take a stroll and then have dinner in one of the sweet restaurants and the day is perfect.

Absolute nature at Bohinj Lake

Not far from Bled is Lake Bohinj. Unlike Lake Bled, this lake is crystal clear and surrounded by the Julian Alps. Once in the cold water you don’t really want to go out anymore, the lake is so fresh and pure.
But not only swimming in the lake is a popular activity in Bohinj, it is also very worthwhile to unpack your hiking boots and explore the nature, respectively the Triglav National Park.

Ljubljana: The beautiful capital of Slovenia

Don’t forget anything on a trip to Slovenia: Ljubljana.
Slovenia’s capital is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever seen. A small and sweet city, with small streets, canals and bridges where the eye reaches. Just pure romance.
At every corner you will find cute cafés or restaurants and beautiful, modern shops. In Ljubljana you can walk through the city without a plan and simply enjoy the ambience, drink a glass of wine and explore the student quarter. But one does not need to plan many days for this, Ljubljana is manageable and after a day trip one already knows best about it. Important for campers: Here, it is best to book a hotel or an AirBnb apartment. The prices in Slovenia are very reasonable and especially for short stays it is worthwhile to start directly from the centre.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BjC_vcRDD8U/

Discover the caves of Škocjan

There are several caves in Slovenia that can be visited. My favourite are the Škocjan Caves. Since 1986 these have also been UNESCO World Heritage Sites and attract almost 100,000 visitors annually. Reason: The Cerkvenik Bridge over the Canyon. The biggest Europe and third biggest in the world! The cave also has some stalactites to offer.

Small but fine: the coast of Slovenia

From the cave you can immediately continue to the coast of Slovenia. This one is small and there are only three cities: Koper, Piran and Izola.

Koper

Koper is the largest city on the Slovenian coast and is only 10 kilometres from the border with Italy. This can be seen not only in the bilingual street signs and the like, but also in the design of the old town. The picturesque little alleys often remind one of small coastal towns in Italy. In Koper there is the biggest port of Slovenia, and every year there is a jazz festival, “MareziJazz”. For 13 years musicians from all over Europe have come for the musical experience.

Piran

Piran is unique with its small and winding streets in the Venetian style. The village is largely car-free and can therefore best be explored on foot. This place is a must for all Slovenia travellers. The sweet old town attracts tourists every year, but is not overcrowded.

You won’t find a sandy beach in Slovenia, but on hot summer days people only romp around at Piran’s headland. Colourful towels and air mattresses wherever you look – right next to the pedestrian zone. In July the Piraner music evenings are particularly popular. Every Thursday in July, soloists and chamber music ensembles perform in the Minorite Monastery. In general, the city comes alive in summer: the Summer Festival and the Tartini Festival are just two of Piran’s top summer events.

Izola

Izola is located directly between Piran and Koper, so it is a good idea to stay in this small town to get to know the three coastal towns best. It’s more quiet here. A stroll through the old town, a view of the harbour – there is not much more here. Nevertheless, Izola is definitely worth a visit. The fishermen can still be watched at the harbour and especially the water sports attract the people to Izola.

National Park Triglav

At 2,846 metres, Triglav is the largest mountain in Slovenia. Even the Slovenian 50-cent coins depict the peak of Triglav, but Narional Park has so much more to offer. Particularly impressive: the Soca, which stretches through the Julian Alps. A river you can’t imagine turquoise, therefore untouched nature far and wide. A true paradise for fishermen and hikers. The Valley of the Soca has so much to offer: Peace and relaxation with waterfalls, mountains, tributaries, gorges and troughs. But the valley is particularly famous for activities such as hiking, cycling and water sports. Rafting, kayaking, canyoning, fishing, fly-fishing and even winter sports can be practised here.

For those who are not so keen on sports: just grab your bike and explore the area, in the Triglav National Park there is really something to see and discover everywhere.

Very recommendable: with a cable car you can reach the top of the mountain. In good weather you have a beautiful view of the valley, but beware: in bad weather you prefer to stay down because you can’t see through the clouds.
