The beginning of Heidi’s career

The internationally sought-after German model Heidi Klum originally comes from Bergisch Gladbach. Heidi’s father was initially a production manager in a perfume factory until he founded the model agency “One eins fab” in honor of his daughter’s success. Klum’s mother, on the other hand, was a hairdresser. Heidi graduated from a comprehensive school in her home town in 1992.

Model ’92’ was the name of Thomas Gottschalk’s show at the time, in which 25,000 girls had to compete to become a model. As you’ve probably already guessed, Heidi decided to give modeling a chance. To actively support her budding career, Klum moved to the United States to New York after graduating from high school, at just 19 years old. Five years later it happened; Heidi landed a job as a Victoria Secret Angel after appearing on the cover of the American magazine Sports Illustrated. As a campaign face for various companies such as Birkenstock, Douglas and even McDonalds, Heidi made a name for herself. Soon everyone knew her and she was a role model for all the young girls out there who also wanted to realize their dream as a model.

Germany’s Next Topmodel, DSDS, America’s Got Talent, Project Runway, Making the Cut etc., Heidi Klum is not only seen on catwalks, but also on TV. Your private life: Wedding & children

Such a beautiful, successful woman, but no man at her side? Quite the opposite: at the age of 20, Heidi Klum married hairdresser Ric Pipino. After five years, however, the marriage broke down and the two divorced. During a brief relationship with Flavio Briatore, Heidi became pregnant for the first time. She had her first daughter, followed by the divorce and the typical, private little dramas about moving out, moving house and selling the house after the divorce. At the age of 32, Heidi Klum gave married life another chance and married Seal, with whom she had three children, who adopted her first daughter and from whom she took the surname Samuel.

Modeling And Acting

FIV: First I want to thank you again for taking the time for the interview. You are not only a model, but also a film actor. Did you start modeling or acting first? When and how did you start it?

ANEJ: Yes, that is correct. I started modeling first, in fact I have been modeling for over 10 years now. I started at 16 by moving to Milan, after I was discovered in a shopping mall in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

FIV: Does one of the two appeal to you more?

ANEJ: So far I don’t have enough acting experiences to really distinguish massive differences between the two. But I most definitely enjoy being ‘’on set’’ and working with great creatives which is why I’m in this industry from the beginning.

FIV: Despite not yet having so much acting experience, can you say that you can combine them, modeling and acting, well?

ANEJ: I would hope so (laugh). Modeling has definitely changed my life. I was able to travel all over the world, gain valuable contacts and receive working Visa in USA, which is not the easiest.

FIV: So modelling has already made a lot of things possible for you, but those are both jobs where you need a lot of luck to really make a living. Can you do that?

ANEJ: So far, I was always able to do that therefore let’s hope it continues. There are some times where there isn’t as much work and other times it is extremely busy and I have to travel to 5 countries in a month.

Advices For Getting In

FIV: Can you give people who are also interested in this industry some advice on how to get started?

ANEJ: Don’t! Run! (laugh). I would definitely advise youngsters coming up, to have several things ‘’on the burner’’, meaning never bet everything on one sole thing. Also always be punctual and your own bellwether.

Traveling Around The World

FIV: As we can see and you already mentioned, you have also traveled an incredible amount. Was that related to jobs or could you afford it through jobs?

ANEJ: Both. Most of traveling was done as a cause of work. I have always been enamored by travel and my favourite lifestyle will always be globetrotter and sightseer. Usually when I’m free off work I do the opposite and I just stay in and avoid people and places.

FIV: Well, you have to switch off sometimes and everyone needs some time for themselves. What was the most beautiful place you have been to?

ANEJ: Rio De Janeiro during Carnaval season was spectacular. The energy of the city was intoxicating, the vibrant colors everywhere were captivating and alluring..and of course the Ipanema Beach itself is a treasure.
I also love spending my time in Capri, Italy or Lago di Como where I used to shoot a lot while I lived in Italy.

Jobs And Dreams

FIV: That sounds amazing, especially living in Italy must be wonderful. What was your biggest and most exciting job so far?

ANEJ: My biggest job was definitely working for Calvin Klein, or Pierre Balmain when I was blonde and just starting out in the world of fashion. I also loved my L’Officiel Cover shoot or a 3 day campagin shoot I did in Singapore.

FIV: That already sounds great. Do you still have a particular dream that you would like to make come true?

ANEJ: I most definitely do, however out of habit I never talk about things that aren’t out yet. In general I want to be happy and successful in whatever I choose to do. And I will always want to have a lot of freedom.

Modeling in Milan? Application & Test Shooting

Super fast…. Apply, good shoots, good photographers, quality of quanitity. Patience, confidence…

However, to move to Milan you need certain skills. This chance is often unique and hard-fought, because the places are limited. We talked to Klara, a model from Cologne who has already modeled in Milan. She told us something about the application process, her career and her stay in Milan.

Application process & first experiences

Klara has been told before that she should model. She applied online via the website, sent in pictures and was then invited. She was able to convince the bookers and after one month at the agency she already had her first shooting. Milan: Model agency, castings & everyday life

In September 2019, the young model traveled to Milan. This was her first trip alone and therefore she was very excited. However, she revealed that the positive feelings clearly outweigh with her. Of course, she first had to find her way around a bit after landing. Klara just let everything come to her in Milan.

From the airport she makes her way alone to her agency. With suitcases she made herself first something familiar with the city and arrived at the agency she met her booker. First they should get to know each other and Klara got her keys to the apartment. She also got her model book, which was filled with pictures she had taken in Germany before. Klara describes the team as very friendly and warm.

And it started as soon as she had a day’s rest. She shot Polaroids for clients and had a strict schedule with many castings thanks to Fashion Week. Armed with her model book and sedcart, she ran from casting to casting and had to quickly find her way around the fashion metropolis.

Castings in Milano: How does it work?

The young model had not attended any castings in Germany, because here it is more common to be booked via direct booking. In Milan, however, she received several mails with adresses every day and went to hundreds of castings. There she usually found a long queue of pretty girls, whom she often saw again at other castings.

At these castings Klara tells that she often had to wait a long time. When it was finally her turn, it always went differently. But every time she had to hand in her model book and her setcard. At some castings she also had to walk, sometimes she was asked a few questions and if it went really well, she was even allowed to try on clothes.

Everyday life in Milan: Gym, Castings & Model WG

I also asked Klara about her everyday life in Milan. She told me that her days were always different and varied, but usually had the same structure. After getting up, she would first have breakfast and then get ready.

Either in the morning or in the evening she made her way to the gym. Every day she had a list of castings she had to attend and in the evening she spent time with her roommates. Sometimes they cooked together, sometimes they just let the evening end together.

Fashion shows, castings and requirements

Klara also told me about her first experience at a fashion show. Behind a fashion show is of course a lot of work. Before a fashion show there is a casting, followed by a fitting where the models can try on the clothes. Klara reveals that she herself didn’t realize what was in store for her until she sat in the make-up.

While she was standing in line she was very excited but when she took her first step on the catwalk all the excitement just fell off her. Her mind went blank and she just focused on the show. She compares this excitement with a presentation in school, before it is always worse than once you have started.

Milan requirements: measurements, bust and size

The requirements are not very different from the requirements in Germany. Of course, catwalk models are expected to be different than commercial models. The measurements can vary, but Klara confirms that the ideal measurements for a catwalk model are 90-60-90. The bust size is the least important thing. For commercials, measurements and height are not that important, but as a runway model you should be between 1.75m and 1.80m tall. 1.78m is the ideal height for a model.

Plans for the future – London & Paris

Klara hopefully has a great career ahead of her, so I asked her what her next goals are. She told me that her dream is to model in London. Of course Paris would also be a great option, but the charm of London captivated her more.

3 Tips for Model Beginners

I also asked Klara for tips for girls and guys who want to become a model. First of all it is important to find an agency where you feel comfortable. Klara thinks it’s important not to compare myself with others and not to take rejections personally. This job is based on appearance and if you are not booked, it is often because the type is not wanted. If a blonde is wanted, then a brunette is rejected.

In the selection of agencies for kids, it is especially important to me to make sure that:

• The website is actively maintained and looks appealing
  (just as customers would see a page)
• The blog is filled with new jobs and shoots
• Social media channels (especially Facebook, Instagram) are used
  (this also helps the promotion of child models).

The perfect model agency for kids! My recommendations

Serious child model agencies organize castings and appointments for jobs so that everything goes according to the law. Children are allowed to work only under certain conditions.

For example, you need a certificate from the public health officer to be allowed to do jobs. The requirements for jobs also differ. While adult models usually work 8 hours, boys and girls are (currently) allowed a maximum of 3 hours. Babies are only allowed on set for a maximum of 30 minutes. Extremely important is also a close communication of the agency with you as mom and dad.

Shudu: The first digital supermodel

Shudu, known as one of the most beautiful models on Instagram, was created in response to the monotony of the modeling business. Shudu for Balmain: The Virtual Army

Shudu Gram is a true star on Instagram. What makes a supermodel?

Supermodels like Eva Herzigová or Kate Moss fulfill the (external) clichés of a model in every respect. The perfect measurements, pure skin and full hair. But the supermodel as it used to exist, does not exist anymore. The demands on the model, how she has to look like, generally how she acts in the world have changed. Herzigová even goes one step further and calls the activist Greta Thunberg a supermodel. The status of a model and its definition are at a turning point. A model is no longer just an empty canvas, but a person with a voice.

Virtual Influencer: The future of tomorrow?

At the latest since the advent of digital photography and Photoshop, the difference between real and fake can no longer be seen anyway. The advantage of a virtual character: He can be everything and very fast! The developers behind the virtualities create an answer to a prominent demand. In elaborate miniature work a story around the person is invented, character traits are cultivated and pixel by pixel new marketing possibilities are created. Controversies and dangers

If people are already able to design virtual people whose fiction you can’t even look at, where are the limits and does this change influence the traditional, already critically eyed model world? Are the digital newcomer models a competitor to the real supermodels of the 90s, like Naomi Campbell or Heidi Klum, as well as the hip models of the 21st century, Gigi Hadid or Haily Bieber? But the effort of a virtual model should not be underestimated. Because behind the perfect appearance and the unmarked life are several hours of hard work. Moreover, digital influencers are not cheaper than real ones of their kind. Besides the development costs, the team behind all the steps of Shudu and Co. must not be forgotten. Italians, design specialists, marketing managers and so on. However, this development does not pose a threat to the demand for real models, says Cameron Wilson.

Nadja Auermann’s career: Discovered in a small Berlin café

Nadja was discovered in 1990 in Berlin after passing her A-levels when she was discovered by a model scout in a small café. She decided to move to Paris to pursue her modeling career. As a model with the longest legs Nadja quickly managed to make a name for herself. One year after her discovery she appeared in the British edition of Vogue. Two years later the blonde even managed to get on the cover of the US edition. Soon every great designer knew the German supermodel. Mother of four according to Model Business

Nadja Auermann’s biggest dream has always been to have her own children later on. With media manager Olaf-Björn Tietz, the model fulfilled this dream. Together they had a daughter, whom they named Cosima. Unfortunately this relationship was doomed to failure. A few years later Nadja made her relationship with German actor Wolfram Grandezka known, with whom she had a son. But also here the model had no luck and seven years later the divorce of the two followed. In the end she was lucky with the psychiatrist from Bonn with whom she is still together. As a model at only 16 years of age, she had to realize early on how hard life can be. Controversies and dangers

If people are already able to design virtual people whose fiction you can’t even look at, where are the limits and does this change influence the traditional, already critically eyed model world? Are the digital newcomer models a competitor to the real supermodels of the 90s, like Naomi Campbell or Heidi Klum, as well as the hip models of the 21st century, Gigi Hadid or Haily Bieber? But the effort of a virtual model should not be underestimated. Because behind the perfect appearance and the unmarked life are several hours of hard work. Personal information: Origin, daily routine & shootings

FIV: Marcus your last name sounds like you having german origins. Is there a story behind your last name or are you german?

Marcus: Hessenberg is a german name, although I was told there could be dutch origins but it has always made sense that it could be a hill in Hessen and my German side seem to all be from Frankfurt. There are not many Hessenbergs and i actually found my German cousin through couch surfing and we keep in touch still.

FIV: I saw that you live in London. Do you think it is easier to get into the fashion business in London than in other cities? Why is london so famous in the fashion business? And do you think there it is easier to develope your own unique style?

Marcus: I can’t tell you how much I love London. London and New York are both my favourite cities. The truth is that London is famous for so many industries and fashion is just one. I love this mix as it means there is a clash of motives in the city. It is used and seen in so many different ways. There are different types of people through out the city and they dress and behave in different ways – there is a constant reaction to eachother and this fuels different communities to identify themselves in different ways. There are also many different influences from all over the world and London is still a port city with people coming and going all the time, each leaving their mark here. London is truly international and all the communities bring their own fashion sense.

FIV: Marcus can u tell me how a busy work day in your life looks like? What is your first step you do on those days?

Marcus: At the moment I am busy! On shooting days I tend to keep things simple – I have a large set up and a small set up – my small set up is a Canon stills camera and a Sony Fs5 Video camera. If I am not shooting I have my laptop with me and move around London sitting in cafes editing. Yes I am one of those laptop people. I get up at 8am usually and get my bike or walk in a direction from Elephant and Caslte, sometimes in to Soho, sometimes South or East. I try to mix pleasure with work as much as possible, I am always working in one sense – from shooting, to editing to planning the next shoot and answering emails.

FIV: On your website I saw that you mainly shoot womans. Do you have a certain reason why you mainly shoot woman? I see the urban look is your style. Why you took the urban look?

Marcus: I mainly shoot women this is true. I prefer working with women generally and in terms of clothing and working with the body I find there is more versatilty in photographing women. Obviously I naturally have a male gaze but I tend to follow many female photographers who work with women’s fashion on instagram. I may work with men more in the future but I would really want to reflect on how to make men’s fashion photography a bit dfferent, it doesn’t come naturally to me. I love women.

I am a city lover and I shoot the people I admire and find stylish. I live in a central inner city bit of London and this is reflected in my work.

FIV: At your website i could read that you like celebrating modern culture and prefer the art going more forward than backward. What does art mean for you?

Marcus: Generally I like the way cultures change and adapt according to circumstances. Cities such as london are always moving and adapting. People compete here and its the same with styles. Birtain as a whole can sometimes have a habit of looking backwards and trying to revert to past stereotypes of Britishness. I react against this as much as possible. Britain can be a very progressive and exciting place in certain corners of the country with some of the most contrasted people in such a small place.

FIV: There are many fish at the sea, that’s a german phrases. Literally translated this means, that your not the only photographer in London. What do you think make you unique and high demanded?

Marcus: Who know’s – I do what I like and I enjoy my work. I feel less and less like trying to impress people and just to do what I enjoy as much as possible – At the beginning you feel like trying to justify your work and create work that appeases other people but I do this less and less. I try to only take on projects that work for me now too. I only shoot colour now. I’m also quite positive and i think this helps. I am always taking every shoot as a learning experience tooo and I want to improve constantly.

FIV: You already had a lot of shootings with differnt people and personalities. what do a model need in your opinion to be successful and a good model? Are there some characterics every model should have? If so which are they?

Marcus: Modeling is a skill – the ability to switch it on when you may not be in the mood, or to switch from happy to moody on demand is amazing. I have had a model who is 5 foot who appears to be 6 foot in the photos, purely because she knew her angles and had a big personailty. I tend to choose models who have personality and their own style. I like it to feel like a mutual collaboration and I enjoy talking with models as we shoot.

Photographer: Way to professional photography

FIV: Compared with other photographs your style look different. Do you want to say something with your photos? And would you consider photography as art?

Marcus: Im not too sure how to define my style. I like colour and i like colour and i like energy. Although inadvertise myself as a fashion photographer, its more about the people than the clothes. I like people with natural style and character. The clothes come with it. I snap away and chat as i do, its also my social life half the time. I dont over think things, i just like to do. I suppose again it is my rejection of a certain view of the UK – I like celebrating the concrete and the clash of old and new here, as well as the changing face of the UK.

Photography is an art form but i don’t take it too a seriously in that sense. I see it more as documentation, documeng people and doing it in a colourful way. I like people, i like bodues and i like personality

FIV: You working as a photographer, is that your biggest dream or do you have another bigger dream? Now looking to your career, what is your next goal?

Marucs: Photography and video are my passion. I love stills photography but i always want video to go along side with my photography. I always shoot video on every shoot. I tend to edit the video first as i really enjoy the process. I would like to make a feature documentary on the people of London, also one on sex and erotica and also try my hand on a narrative film eventually.

FIV: You write on your website. »too many cooks spoil the broth« Is that’s the reason for you using small teams. How many people are working with you in your team?

Marcus: Normally i try to keep it as small as myself and the model. Sometimes theres an MUA and stylists, sometimes not as i tend to shoot people who have a natural intersting style in their wardrobe. If its a bigger shoot with a stylist i try to keep the team as small as possible and limit extra people on set. I just find sometimes the atmosphere changes when everyone has a view. It’s always best when people feel like they are free on set and give more direction as the shoot goea kn and everyone feels more settled in their roles.

FIV: Did you ever was in Berlin? If yes would you say that you can compare Berlin as the german fashion metropole with other fashion metropoles like London, Paris or New York?

Marcus: Yup! I used to spend a bit of time in Berlin and recently went back. I’ts a great city. I used to want to move there but as i said before, I fell in love with London. I think it is true when people say the Berlin look is a bit grungier although i do not feel confident enough to say this for sure. I would say that London and New York has much more variation in styles as the people come from all sorts of fields.

Late entry, training as photo designer & family cohesion

FIV: As a child, did you like to take pictures and what were your favorite motifs at the beginning?

Julia: I came relatively late to photography, around the age of 20…Before that I didn’t have a camera in my hand and wasn’t very interested in photography although my father worked for KODAK for years.

FIV: What was your career as a photographer like? Where did you get your photography skills from?

Julia: After the Abitur I didn’t know for a long time what I wanted to become. Then I had the possibility to do an internship with a fashion photographer and saw there for the first time a kind of career wish for me. I continued to assist, then did an apprenticeship as a state-approved photo designer, after that I assisted again freely and firmly and finally I became self-employed. My photography skills come from the classical education, I learned analog and then of course from my practical experience during my residency. And of course through many free works.

FIV: Were there people in your environment who were worried that you could not live from your work as a photographer?

Julia: No, fortunately not, or rather they didn’t say it because they saw how vehemently I pursued my career aspiration and that I had a fixed goal in mind. So I was rather encouraged and supported.

Julia about talent, teamwork on set & professionalism

FIV: Is there such a thing as talent in photography or is experience the most important thing?

Julia: Definitely, in my opinion talent is still the most important thing. But talent alone is not enough.
Experience can also be very helpful, but it takes time.

FIV: Nowadays you don’t photograph alone anymore, but with a big team of make-up artists, lighting and of course models. Who organizes the whole thing and how does a day with a shooting at your place work?

Julia: For most of my current jobs I am allowed to put together the team. Here I help myself from my pool of experienced and well-rehearsed people who fit perfectly to the respective shooting.

FIV: Amazon and Hugo Boss have already used your services. With such big clients there was certainly some action around the shootings. Which one do you like to remember best?

Julia: I remember big jobs and also smaller ones. All jobs, no matter how small or big, received the same attention, the same intensive preparation, the selection of the team etc. Not only the professionalism, the concentrated work on the set but also the humanity and the joy during the job play a big role for me.
And so every piece of the puzzle makes a big whole.

FIV: You photograph for different industries and accordingly take different pictures with quite different objectives. What kind of pictures do you prefer to make in your private life?

Julia: I don’t really do much photography in private. My favourite works are usually the “beauty portraits”. A mixture of close-up and portrait.

FIV: What would you recommend to a young person whose dream is to become a photographer? Should one proceed differently today than in the past? What do you think are the biggest challenges as a photographer today?

Julia: For me personally it was still important to do the classical training. But that was 20 years ago. As a photographer, I was still allowed to grow up with analogue technology.
I think it’s nice to be able to look back.
It helped me a lot as a foundation and development to master the entrance into digital photography.

Today, the classic job description of the photographer no longer exists. Today the photographer is more of a “content creator”, everything has changed a lot compared to back then.
I don’t want to judge that at all. But the classic photographer from back then definitely has to reinvent himself today.
I think today it is easier for newcomers or autodidacts to enter the world of photography. There are numerous tools. In my opinion, the classical training is no longer necessary. Personality is important to show yourself and your skills.

Julia’s plans for the future: exhibition, book & gratitude

FIV: Finally, let’s talk about your future. What are the biggest goals you want to achieve as a photographer? What are your biggest goals that you still want to achieve in life? Is there anything new on the horizon?

Julia: Photography has always been a dream job for me, I am still very grateful to be able to work as a photographer.
An exhibition would be a great thing. A hardcover book with my best works so far would be great. Apart from that I am open and thankful for everything that will come.
