Where is the Big Apple?

In the US state of the same name lies the metropolis of New York. With over 8 million inhabitants, New York is the largest city in the USA. The famous Hudson River flows through the city, directly into the Atlantic Ocean. You have to plan about 10 hours for a flight from Germany. The city has two airports, La Guardia and JFK, many international airlines offer direct flights to these two locations.

New York City neighborhoods: Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn and Co.

The 5 districts of New York could hardly be more different. Each district reflects a very special mentality. Manhattan – New York’s flagship. Everyone probably thinks of this neighborhood when they think of New York. The densely populated heart of the city is not only home to countless skyscrapers, almost all the famous sights are located here. Its immediate neighbor: the Bronx. Formerly a social hotspot, numerous parks and sports facilities, as well as botanical gardens, have been established in recent years.

Known for tranquility and the typical New York row houses is the borough of Brooklyn. The famous Brooklyn Bridge connects Manhattan with Brooklyn. The largest of the boroughs: Queens is characterized by universities and sports facilities. Most people forget about Staten Island. Here, in addition to outlet stores, there are numerous museums and a popular zoo. The borough can be easily reached from the mainland by ferry.

Holiday at the Hopfensee – The holiday at the Hopfensee promises a real adventure, because with a journey to the dreamlike lake one must count on a small round trip and the surrounding towns. While one walks, bathes, surfs on the first day at the lake and tries afterwards the plain cooking of the best Fischerhütte of Germany, the second day offers only more fun. The castle Neuschwanstein in Schwangau, the Lechfall in Füssen or a chilled day at the camping site directly at the Hopfensee. There is probably not enough time during a short vacation to discover everything. Therefore we have summarized the best of Hopfensee and surroundings in this article.

Hopfensee – facts & attractions at the lake

Lake Hopfensee is located in the district of Ostallgäu, Bavarian Swabia, Bavaria. With a maximum length of 2.5 kilometres and an average depth of 10 metres it is a relatively small lake. This does not mean, however, that one can see or do little there. The journey to the Hopfensee is worthwhile alone because of the indescribable view. Understandable why it is also called ‘Allgäuer Riviera’. Actually the Hopfensee is known as an air and Kneipp spa. The quiet location, the fresh air and the lukewarm water in the lake is really inviting. Already in May you can throw yourself into the coolness after a walk at the lido, because the allegedly “coolness” has the advantage that it belongs to the warmest pre-alpine lakes.

How big and deep is the hop lake?

The Hopfensee is a lake with a maximum length of 2.5 kilometres and a circumference of 6.8 kilometres. It had an average depth of 10 metres and with an area of 1.94 square kilometres it manages to attract thousands of tourists every year.

Map: Hopfensee

The lake lies about 6 kilometres north of Füssen in the district of Ostallgäu, Bavarian Swabia. In the north flysch mountains and in the west the drumlins of the ground moraine hills border the lake. As a result of the melting process of the Lechvorland glacier, the Hopfensee is a relic of the northwestern bay of the late glacial formed Füssener See.

You want to go directly to the lake? Then enter Google Maps – Directions: Uferstraße 21, 87629 Füssen-Hopfen am See, Germany

Bucket List: 5 tips +1 insider tip

Swimming / beach bath

Surfing/kite surfing

Sailing/boat rental

Hiking

Fishing

Insider tip: Eating in a fishing hut

At the Hopfensee you can have a lot of fun depending on the weather conditions. A walk takes about two hours at a comfortable speed. The 4-kilometre hiking trail ends at the lido, where you can either take a bath, sunbathe on one of the numerous sunbeds or linger in the shade on one of the benches. For the swimmers there are shower facilities, a swimming island and a ladder. For sports fans there is the possibility of kitesurfing, as well as sailing. Renting a boat at the Hopfensee is very worthwhile, because in the middle of the lake there is the perfect opportunity to fish in peace. So you do not have to worry about what is eaten today. Fishing is not your strength, is it? Then you can fill up with Bavarian and Swabian food at the fishing hut, which is located directly on the lake. Delicious food at sunset with such a panorama! What more could you want?

Cities in the immediate vicinity: Füssen & Schwangau

In the immediate vicinity of the Hopfensee there are several towns that you must have seen. The Hopfensee with a circumference of 6 kilometres is quickly completely visited. But what else can you do if you have planned a trip of several days? After 2 to 3 rounds at the lake you might get tired of it. The towns in the direct vicinity of the Hopfensee offer unbelievable attractions, exciting museums, magnificent castles and even more idyllic nature. How about a carriage ride in the sweet old town of Füssen, which is famous for its small colourful houses? Or would you prefer to get to know the boundless nature that has given people peace and quiet for thousands of centuries? In the surrounding cities you can experience history as well as pure nature. The world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle is definitely on the must-see list. More about this right now!

Füssen: Romatic Old Town, Lechfall & Basilica St. Mang

Füssen is a small town in Bavaria, which lies west of the Hopfensee. With its romantic old town, numerous castles, impressive mountains and lakes, Füssen is the soul of Bavaria. Whether you want to go on a boat trip on warm days in the Alatsee or the Forgsee or you want to spend the typical tourist vacation at sights like the Basilica St.Mang is up to you. It is clear that the city is perfect for nature lovers as well as for city explorers. For the big appetite the regional cuisine is in any case recommended.

Füssen Old Town

Alat Lake

Lechfall

High Castle

Basilica St. Mang

Forgsee

The Lechfall is an approximately twelve-metre high, full-width overflowing dam on the Lech River on the southern outskirts of Füssen. About 12,000 years ago, the gorge was created, which was responsible for the name “Lechfall”. It was formed at the end of the Würmian period, when the melt water of the Lech glacier formed a large lake that stretched to what is now Pfronten. As the outflow of this lake, the Lech initially plunged about 100 m deep over the riegel into what was then Lake Füssen and then eroded the narrow rock gorge.

In the legend about Saint Magnus, he jumped over the Lechfall at its highest point when he was pursued by a poisonous dragon. The Mangtritt, a footprint-like depression in the rock, is a reminder of this.

My tip: Regional cuisine in Füssen

Allgäu specialities are usually made from milk, flour and eggs. Bavarian and Swabian cuisine play a very important role in Füssen and the whole Allgäu. Whether Maultaschen or Spätzle, a visit obliges to have at least tried the regional cuisine. If you want to try out the German dishes in a nice ambience, you should definitely try the renowned restaurant Madame Plüsch. Between tartar, goat cheese and fillet of beef there is something delicious for everyone. The restaurant in the style of the twenties offers only high quality products, specially concerning animal products. Don’t worry – there is also plenty for vegans, vegetarians and gluten-free lovers.

Schwangau: Neuschwanstein Castle, Museum of the Bavarian Kings & Schwansee

Castles and palaces as far as the eye can see. When you leave the big city, you will find castles and palaces in the most rural regions all over Germany. All have their own story to tell. In the long run this may be boring, but Neuschwanstein Castle stands out from the other castles in all the cities and regions of Germany. The world-famous castle reminds of a fairy tale, that’s why there are so many legends about the castle. The Museum of the Bavarian Kings is also definitely worth seeing. Not only does it give you an impression of history, but the gilded antiques make your eyes shine.

Is this a dream, a scene from a Disney princess movie? Some people wonder that after these pictures. No, this impressive castle really exists and fortunately it is in the middle of Germany. Neuschwanstein Castle was completely finished in 1886, only seven weeks after the death of King Ludwig II. His wish was to create a retreat from the old castle ruins of Vorder- and Hinterhohenschwangau.

The foundation stone for the new castle was laid on 5 September 1869. In a letter, the king at the time stated that he could hardly wait to rest there in three years. Unfortunately the conditions on the mountain were very hard and the completion took almost 20 years, which the king did not live to see because of his mysterious death. Until today incredible legends are still being told about the castle and his death.

Prices and facts about Neuschwanstein Castle today

His wish was that no stranger should ever enter his castles, but since the death of Ludwig II, these have been visited by more than 130 million people. With 1.4 million visitors annually, Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most popular castles in Europe. For a price of 13 Euro adults can take a closer look at this architectural masterpiece from the inside and join thousands of other visitors who explore the numerous rooms and perhaps set off in search of the truth of the many legends. A ticket in combination with Hohenschwangau Castle costs 25 Euro.

Rules at Neuschwanstein Castle

What is important during a visit is that one can only visit the castle during a guided tour. This usually lasts 35 minutes. Photography is prohibited due to the possible destruction of the paintings by the millions of flashes per year. It is also not allowed to bring a pet with you.

Physically handicapped people can also visit the castle. The castle has its own elevator exclusively for physically handicapped visitors. Reservations must be made in advance!

No photography allowed

No carrying of animals

Sightseeing only possible in the form of a guided tour (35 min)

Accommodations: Hotel, camping, holiday flat & Co.

An important part of a journey is the accommodation. Therefore, the question of all questions always arises when planning your holiday. What kind of accommodation do I book? Where exactly will I stay? Fortunately Lake Hopfensee is a very small place, therefore the choice of the surrounding accommodation is limited. Nevertheless some people wish to have an accommodation in the immediate vicinity and maybe they only want to see the Hopfensee as one of many sights in the Allgäu. You can find more information about this in our article about lastminute holidays in Germany.

Here we have searched for you advantages and disadvantages of camping, hotel as well as holiday flats together:

Hotel: Wellness & Kur

Would you like a quiet location with a view of nature, or a more central location to keep up with history? At the Hopfensee you will find everything your heart desires. It is also the perfect place to relax. Do you need a break from the hectic city life with crowded streets, a never sleeping city and noisy garbage collection in the morning? In the numerous hotels with a focus on wellness you will find one thing above all else – peace and quiet. The peaceful atmosphere lets you melt completely with nature. It is not for nothing that the place is a health resort.

In addition to spa and wellness hotels, you will find very rural hotels with home-style cooking and a great love of nature in the area.

Advantage:

No stress when booking your holiday

Transfer to the hotel included in the price

Completely cared for by the staff

Ideal for cooking muffle

The cleaning is done by others

Cons:

Significantly higher price

Extra payments for internet, parking, etc.

fixed location, no spontaneity

Mostly no washing, cooking etc. possible

Camping at Hopfensee: Camping sites and destinations

The camping ground at the Hopfensee is the only one with direct location. It is a 5 star camping site, which above all tries to create a harmonious combination of sport and leisure fun, fitness training and health care. On the one hand it tries to convey peace and relaxation, on the other hand it offers movement, activity and mental stimulation. For more than 60 years it has been owned by the Mayr family. Starting with an empty site and a kiosk, the campsite now has its own indoor swimming pool, sauna, restaurant, various sports and gymnastics grounds, as well as sanitary facilities with showers, bathtubs and changing rooms of the highest standard.

It offers a pleasant stay both in the warm summer days and in the cold winter with special offers like the “Crystal Days” or the “Snowflake Cloud”!

Advantages:

In the middle of nature

cheaper alternative to hotel

More comfortable for children and four-legged friends (nobody complains about the volume)

Freedom: not bound by time and place

greater social interaction with other families, campers

Cons:

Bugs

no 100% relaxation like in a hotel; shopping, cooking, washing under more difficult conditions

very popular camping sites: crowded, not quiet, annoying neighbours

Holiday apartment, holiday home & country house: enjoy the peace and quiet alone

The holiday flats and holiday houses are rather in the surrounding cities Füssen and Schwangau. There it is more typical to find an apartment in the romantic old town. Directly at the Hopfensee itself one finds country houses and rustically furnished accommodations.

Nevertheless a vacation home is suitable ideally for the family. Because an apartment offers great comfort at attractive conditions: a good price-performance ratio for families who want to remain flexible also in the vacation. A typical apartment is spacious and has family-friendly, practical furnishings and a fully equipped kitchen. Mostly there is also a balcony or a garden where children can play undisturbed and let off steam. More space needed? This is where the typical country house is particularly suitable. Especially if you want to travel with several families.

Advantage:

Privacy

Fully equipped

Independence

Flexibility with meals (no getting up early as with package tours)

Cons:

Tied to one place

Limited comfort compared to hotel

Cooking, cleaning and shopping for yourself

Increased need for luggage (bed linen, towels, etc.)

More expensive compared to camping

Weather: Hopfensee

Hopfen am See is situated at 779m above sea level, so the climate in this place is mild and generally warm and temperate. However, one must expect a lot of rain, regardless of the season. This also applies to the driest month.

Holidays on the Moselle: The most beautiful cities, sights and accommodation – the Moselle offers a wide range of possibilities. Unlike a certain place or a big city, you have 544 kilometres of “space” to choose the right accommodation, the right place to stay or the most beautiful sightseeing tour. Whether France or Germany, the landscapes along the Moselle all have one thing in common. The wonderful, vast nature, the flowering plants, the love of wine and the peaceful peace. There are many places along the Moselle that are worth seeing. Places that convince with their history or with their selection of attractions. But there is one thing you have to be prepared for on a trip to the Moselle – when you return to the big city you will miss this connection to nature and the peace and quiet.

The most beautiful cities and sights on the Moselle

With a length of 544 kilometres there are many places along the Moselle. In our beautiful neighbouring country France the Moselle has its source, more precisely in the Vosges mountains at Col de Bussang. In Lorraine it flows through Remiremont and Épinal, in a wide arc around Nancy to Metz and further north. In Germany, the largest section is located in the Rhineland. Green landscapes, mountains with numerous old castles and palaces, the Rhineland only sprouts from breathtaking nature and remnants of past times. Whether it is a picnic with a view of the narrowest loop on the Moselle, a visit to the historical monuments from Roman times in Trier or a trip on Germany’s first three-cable railway across the Rhine – the towns along the Moselle make any long-distance holiday look cheap.

We have put together the most beautiful towns on the Moselle for you:

Trier

Cochem

Koblenz

Traben-Trarbach

Moselle loop near Bremm

Bernkastel-Cues

Enkirch

Pünderich

Zell on the Moselle

Alf

Trier: Porta Nigra, Hauptmarkt, Dom & Co.

Trier is a historically valuable city. It is one of the oldest cities in Germany and by far the most beautiful city on the Moselle. What you should definitely see in Trier are the typical sights, which are not so popular for nothing! At the top of the list is Porta Nigra (more about that in a moment). But you should also see the Simeonstraße, the main market and the cathedral St. Peter.

The most important sights in Tier:

Porta Nigra

Main market

St. Peter’s Cathedral

Liebfrauenkirche

Amphitheater

electoral palace

Imperial Baths

Cafe in Trier? My Tip

When you arrive in Trier, you are probably looking for a way to plan your day! Therefore I have a cute café here, where you can relax and have time to learn a little bit about Trier.

Café Zeitsprung

Address: Weimar Alley 1

Stop Mustorstr.

Porta Nigra: Must have seen

As far as history is concerned, the city offers not only the Porta Nigra, but also the cloister at Trier Cathedral, built in 1245, including a cemetery. The Porta Nigra, which translates into English as “black gate”, is the only remnant from Roman times in Trier. It is believed to have been built in the second century. Since 1986 the Porta Nigra has been under the protection of UNESCO. For just under 4 Euros you can admire the interior of the old Romanesque gate. The cloister at the cathedral of Trier was built in 1245 during the gothic period. The Trier Cathedral and the Liebfrauenkirche are connected by it and at the same time enclose the cemetery of the bishops lying there.

Cochem: Reichsburg Cochem, Capuchin monastery & mustard mill

Far and wide green meadows and fields, the sky is reflected in the Moselle and on top of one of the mountains is probably the most beautiful sight on the Moselle – the Reichsburg Cochem. But of course the city has more to offer. The mustard mill has existed for more than 200 years and during a visit you can try between 10 different kinds of mustard and chutney. It is also a perfect gift for the family.

Reichsburg Cochem

Capuchin monastery cultural centre

Mustard mill in Cochem

Cochem chairlift

Gemstone Museum Cochem

Bundesbank Bunker

Winneburg castle ruin

Reichsburg Cochem: The most important landmark

Reichsburg Cochem – Its history is both tragic and touching. The castle was built between 1100 and the first half of the 12th century. Uunder the command of a Lieutenant de Saxis the castle was set on fire, undermined and blown up on 19 May 1689. At that time, many castles in southwest Germany suffered the same fate. It was not until 1877, at the request of Louis Fréderic Jacques Ravené, that the ruins were reconstructed into a castle in neo-Gothic style to be used as a summer residence for his family. During the Second World War the Reich Minister of Justice Otto Georg Thierack had a special Nazi training centre for lawyers set up here. The mosaic portrait of St. Christopher created by an Italian master in 1870 was destroyed during the National Socialist era. Today the Reichsburg belongs to the city of Cochem and is one of the most important sights and attractions in the Rhineland.

Koblenz: German corner, cable car & romantic museums

Churches, castles, palaces and historic townhouses reflect the history of one of the oldest cities in Germany. Koblenz has a large number of museums that display everything from archaeological finds to French art from the Rhine Romantic period. Enter a world of past history or float with Germany’s first three-cable railway across the Rhine up to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. From the second largest fortress in Europe you have an indescribable view of the “Upper Middle Rhine Valley”, which has been declared a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO since 2000.

Here you can find more sights:

Cable car Koblenz

German Corner

Stolzenfels Castle

Ehrenbreitstein Fortress

VFF Military Study Collection Koblenz

Traben-Trarbach: Instagram Location for fantastic photos

Traben-Trarbach offers many attractions. Above all it attracts photographers. The castle ruins of Grevenburg, as well as the old town with its winding little streets, offer a perfect set for amateur photographers. Only a few foundation walls and the commander’s house are left of the 14th century castle. This provides cool picture motives.

Did you know that Traben-Trarbach has the oldest minigolf course in Germany next to the Buddha Museum. It is probably the largest museum in Germany, which presents Buddha statues from all over the world.

Fancy a little sport? A great opportunity for an excursion with the whole family is the minigolf course in Traben, which was opened in 1955. For 2,50€ you can play golf balls until sunset.

Mosel loop near Bremm: View from the steepest vineyard in Europe

The beautiful landscape motif is the narrowest loop on the Moselle. In the vineyards you can enjoy this view with a picnic basket, a bottle of wine and your love. The small village Bremm has made it to the 20 most beautiful villages in the world because of this view. The via ferrata Calmont, which is the steepest vineyard in Europe, offers the most beautiful view.

Tip for the hobby photographers: With a wide angle lens you can get the whole loop on the picture!

Map of Germany: At the Moselle

The Moselle has its source in the southern Vosges, in France and flows into the Rhine after 544 kilometres in Koblenz at the German Corner. This is known as the kiss between the Rhine and Moselle.

Weather: On the Moselle

today/ in 3 days

About 196 meters above sea level lies the Moselle. This of course also has an effect on the climate, which is mostly cold and temperate. During the driest month the precipitation is nevertheless high. The annual average temperature on the Moselle is 7.6 °C.

Q&A: Moselle

Where does the Moselle begin? How deep is the Moselle? Where is the Moselle state? Questions over questions, here are the answers.

Where does the Moselle begin?

The Moselle has its source in the southern Vosges near the Col de Bussang at an altitude of about 700 m and flows into the Rhine from the west at 59.7 m altitude from Koblenz at the Deutsches Eck, whose north-northeast end lies at 64.7 m above sea level.

How deep is the Moselle?

On average, the Moselle is about 2.5 metres deep.

Where is the Moselle federal state?

In Germany, the Middle Moselle is the approximately 120-kilometre-long section of the Moselle, which runs in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate from the city of Trier to Reil above Zell. The following section of the river up to where the Moselle flows into the Rhine is called Lower Moselle.

Which is the most beautiful city on the Moselle?

Trier is considered the oldest city in Germany and is definitely one of the most beautiful places on the Moselle.

How long is the Moselle?

The “Moselle” is 544 km long and flows into the “Rhine” at the “German Corner” in “Koblenz”. On French soil there are at the beginning only sporadic cycle paths along the “Mosel”.

Which rivers flow into the Moselle?

19 Rivers feed the Moselle with water. These include among others:

Moselotte

Vologne

Madon

Meurthe

Terrouin

How long is the Moselle cycle path?

The main route then continues through many small towns such as Bremm to the district town of Cochem, which is overlooked by the Reichsburg. (Length: 60 km; Traben-Trarbach at 110 m, Cochem at 86 m altitude).

Sunbathing on Venice Beach, walking on the Walk of Fame and swimming in the pool with a view of the Hollywood logo – this is Los Angeles, the city of angels. In California’s largest city, it offers many hours of sunshine and mild water temperatures. In LA you can meet stars like Justin Bieber or Brad Pitt while shopping, because many big names live in the city in the western USA. A vacation in LA is the dream of many – we tell you how it is possible and what you have to see on site.

Accommodation in Los Angeles

Holiday in LA – but where do you sleep? Does a hotel suit you better so that you have to take care of as little as possible? Or do you prefer to feel at home in a holiday apartment? The different types of accommodation suit different types of travel and meet different requirements. We have listed the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of accommodation.

Hotels in Los Angeles

Whether it’s a luxury hotel overlooking the Hollywood Sign or a budget overnight stay close to downtown for a packed and well-planned city break – there are hotels in Los Angeles that cater to a variety of needs. An overnight stay in the City of Angels is relatively expensive compared to other cities in the USA, but a trip to LA is worth it. The offers range from rooftop whirlpools to restaurants with open campfires – in the hotels in LA you can read almost every wish from your lips. FIV Magazine has compiled a list of the best hotels in Los Angeles for you. Take a look.

Holiday apartments in Los Angeles

A cheaper option would be a holiday apartment in Los Angeles. The advantages of a holiday apartment are, for example, that you can choose yourself when there is food and when the alarm clock should ring. You can’t miss breakfast if you prepare it yourself or eat it in a café. A holiday flat lets you be as independent as you want to be. And it is also somehow a small home of one’s own, with a lot of flair, but somewhere else. By the way, the landlords are mostly really nice people who also like to give insider tips about sightseeings and restaurants.

Los Angeles attractions

If you’re ever in Los Angeles, you probably plan to see as much as possible. Downtown or Santa Monica, LA has a lot to offer. You probably already know a lot of sets from various movies or series. So that you don’t waste your time and definitely see all the most important spots, we have compiled a list of sights that you shouldn’t miss. Remember to take pictures for Instagram, LA is guaranteed to make all your followers jealous.

Beverly Hills

Beverly Hills is known for the famous shopping street Rodeo Drive and has also convinced many celebrities of its beauty. It is the home of

Taylor Swift

Jennifer Aniston

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher

Katy Perry

Chrissy Dough and John Legend

Jessica Alba

Jennifer Lawrence

and many more. Beverly Hills is worth a visit because it boasts world-class shopping, expensive hairdressers and world-class spas. Besides sweet cafés, good restaurants and nice hotels, Beverly Hills has a lot of beautiful palm trees and a very special flair.

LA Downtown

Downtown, you should not miss out on your LA trip, as it is practically downtown Los Angeles. Here you will find many interesting neighborhoods, such as Chinatown, the Arts District, Little Tokyo and the Fashion District. There are many notable sights such as The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, an American church whose construction cost about 200 million US dollars. There are also the Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Broad Museum, Grand Park and Los Angeles City Hall. There it is worthwhile to go to the 27th floor, because here you can find a free uppervation deck from which you have a great view of the city.

Venice Beach

Colours everywhere – the colourful graffiti in Venice Beach definitely leaves an impression. Venice Beach is also known for its shopping street and many know the Muscle Beach from movies and articles. At the beach you can find young and old with dumbbells, jogging and experience the typical Californian fitness spirit. The Santa Monica Pier is the end of Route 66 and there you’ll find a small, somewhat overpriced but very famous amusement park. There you can ride a little roller coaster and eat sweet cotton candy. Our tip for Venice Beach is: Rent a Beach Cruiser bike! By this way, one gets comfortably from A to B or can drive alongside the beach with a music box on the luggage rack.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmZ_QJvKW4s

Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is probably the most famous sidewalk in the world. The first star was awarded to director Stanley Kramer in 1960. The Walk of Fame is a sidewalk that extends over 18 blocks on both sides of Hollywood Boulevard. It was inaugurated in November 1960 to revitalize the city of Hollywood. Here you can admire for example the stars of Elvis, Marilyn Monroe or Mariah Carey.

Los Angeles dinner

When we think of the USA, fast food chains shoot us in the head first. Whether McDonalds, Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken or Taco Bell and Five Guys – fast food is not only popular with the Americans, many chains are known and represented worldwide. But besides fast food there are a lot of other dishes that are very common in LA, or which you should try here. The reason for the varied cuisine are influences from all over the world. The FIV Magazine has taken a closer look at the cuisine of Los Angeles for you.

Latin and Hispanic influences

Because of California’s predominantly colonial European Spanish roots, Mexican territorial history, and original population of Meso-Americans, Spanish colonizers, and Mexican ranchers, Mexican and Spanish cuisine is very influential and popular in California, especially in Southern California. Commercial Mexican Taquería-style fast food, consisting of offerings such as burritos, fried beans, tacos, nachos and quesadillas, is widespread. Taquerías are found throughout California.

Asian and oceanic influences

As one of the US states closest to Asia and Oceania, and with a long-standing Asian-American and Oceanic-American population, the state tends to adopt foods from these national styles. The American sushi madness undoubtedly began in California; the term “California Roll” is used to describe sushi with avocado as the main ingredient. Nowadays, items like mocha ice cream and boba are very popular.

California Style Pizza

California-style pizza focuses on non-traditional pizza ingredients, but on fresh produce and grilled meat. First it was popularized by Wolfgang Puck’s Spago restaurants, later it was brought to the masses by restaurants like California Pizza Kitchen.

Barbecue

Barbecue has been a part of Californian cuisine since the Mexicans started grilling beef on ranches in pits in the 1840s. Santa Maria is famous for the tri-tip, a special type of beef that can be grilled, baked, braised or fried. The California barbecue style is also influenced by the regional Southwest American styles of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma, brought by thousands of Dust Bowl migrants. Chicken, ribs, sausages and steaks are also routinely grilled or smoked in a pit. The barbecue sauce used in this state is tomato-based, as in all other western states. However, the Santa Maria barbecue does not use sauce, but the taste of the tricorn and the slow, lively oak fire over which it is cooked. Compared to the pork spare ribs popular in the southern United States, baby back ribs from the western region are popular for barbecue.

Sandwiches, burgers and fast food

Southern California’s auto culture and the population’s dependence on the car as a means of transportation in California’s huge cities has greatly contributed to the popularity of classic drive-in and modern drive-thru restaurants. Restaurant chains like McDonald’s, Jack in the Box, In-N-Out Burger, Carl’s Jr. Wienerschnitzel, Del Taco, Taco Bell, Panda Express, Original Tommy’s, Fatburger, and Big Boy were all established in Southern California.

Those who want to spend their holidays on the North Sea can look forward to fascinating mudflat walks and exquisite holiday resorts. The next beach is not long in coming. Whether the family goes to the North Frisian Islands, the East Frisian Islands or to the mainland. The German North Sea coast stretches from Emden on the Dutch border to the Danish border on the island of Sylt. The North Sea coast is characterised by the special coastal ecosystem of the Wadden Sea, which always attracts tourists to go on a mudflat hike. A North Sea holiday offers many possibilities for activities. In addition to cycle paths, there are also numerous hiking trails or fishing opportunities that attract tourists. A walk along the beaches and the dikes is pure relaxation, no matter if sun, wind or rain. Get to know the region, feel the vastness of the sea and if that is not enough for you, then you will be in good hands in thermal baths and health centres. Let yourself be pampered by wellness and health centres. Experience your North Sea holiday like never before.

Sightseeings: Hikes, nature & animals and museums at the North Sea

Typical for the North Sea is the mudflat. A mudflat walk, during which numerous animals and plants can be discovered, makes a holiday at the North Sea a very special experience. Popular places in the North Sea coast region include hotels near the sights of the lighthouse, the Budersand Sylt Golf Club and the Klimahaus Bremerhaven. Probably the greatest attraction is the sea – especially the low tide. Because when the water recedes, young and old set off on a mudflat hike. So be sure to pack your rubber boots and when it is warm, you can of course go barefoot. A bath in the North Sea is always refreshing! For many cyclists and hikers spring and autumn is the ideal time to pursue their hobbies. In summer you have the chance to enjoy many summer hours. If you are one of those people who want to learn something on holiday, then the North Sea is just right for you. You will find a considerable number of museums at the North Sea, among the most popular destinations, the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven, East Frisian Tea Museum in Norddeich and the Museum Windstärke 10 – Wreck and Fishing Museum in Cuxhaven. Whether nature or culture, the North Sea coast and its islands offer excursion destinations for every taste.

The variety from rustic thatched roofs to Scandinavian wooden houses gives the holiday homes a maritime flair. If you want to take your dog with you, there are many accommodations where your best friend is welcome. In Spain you can rent any kind of holiday home. You can rent houses, apartments, villas and bungalows. The advantage is that you can rent a holiday home for a long period of time, for example for several weeks or even months, at an affordable price.

In Spain holiday homes are very common and you can rent any type of holiday home. There are large villas with a pool and spacious grounds, but also small low bugdet apartments. Everyone will find the right accommodation according to their preferences and budget.

By renting a holiday home you save a lot of money, because in a holiday home there is a kitchen included, so you can prepare meals at an affordable price, and you save restaurant visits, which especially for large families usually end with a hefty bill.

As there is a kitchen in the apartments, you are flexible. Meals can be prepared at any time and you don’t have to stick to certain buffet times as in hotels. Due to this flexibility, one can arrange one’s daily life freely.

Apartments have a living room, which is a big advantage: the common room can be used for family activities, such as games or a cosy wine evening.

Perfect for animal lovers: in most holiday apartments you can take your pets with you, so you don’t have to find someone to look after them.
