Men’s models at Fashion Week: skinny + young

Stephan Czaja (CM): When we talk about fashion, or haute couture, new collections, fashion weeks in Paris, Milan, London, the fashion cities. Generally speaking, I would say young, almost “young” looking 17-21 years old, relatively thin or “skinny”, without a beard and almost always freshly shaved. The models are diverse, African, Asian, European, all looks. The “skills” don’t have to be that trained, a cool look is often enough. Typical Calvin Klein perfume advertising, as if the model “doesn’t care about anything. Fashion stands for new things and accordingly “new” faces are always being sought.

Men’s models in advertising: cool, athletic + smiling

Stephan Czaja (CM): In advertising, men tend to be more distinctive, depending on the target group. Let’s say from the skinny 17-year-old at the fashion show to the athletic man, successful, 3-day beard, a great smile. A career in advertising starts from the age of 19, up to 25, depending on the type. Ultimately, advertising always sells a certain attitude to life, or the “good life” or lifestyle. That’s why “ability” is all the more important. A cool look is no longer enough. Whether it’s a travel campaign, the latest smartphone, fashion, etc., emotions and practiced posing (posture) and facial expressions are needed

Long-term success as male models

Stephan Czaja (CM): The better the male model, the faster the production, the more successfuly the planned goals of the photo shoot are achieved. Looks really only come second. You can only get good jobs and big clients if you prove to your management that they can trust the model. This means being punctual for jobs, attending casting appointments on time, working together professionally on the first small jobs on set, etc.

How long can you work as a male model?

Stephan Czaja (CM): If you like the modeling job, i.e. castings, photo shoots, travel, all doors are open to you, even as you get older. It’s often just important to start early, as a teenager, or at the latest as a young adult. This gives the model management time to build up and the model time to learn.

Future: Which men’s look is coming next?

Stephan Czaja (CM): Next, curvy men will increasingly appear in advertising. Hardly noticed or not noticed at all until now. Curvy women have been around for a few years now. Men with an Asian look are also a trend among marketing agencies, advertising agencies and all other clients.

Sports: Future as a golf pro

Shooting Time, Video Ideas & Talent: The Path to the Perfect TikTok

FIV: On TikTok you inspire your viewers with creative acting videos of you. It’s hard to miss that you have a talent for acting. How did you decide to share your talent on Tik Tok?

Max: Initially, I tried my hand at TikTok first. Of course, I didn’t really know the app at first and tried out a lot of content. Then after a month I got into acting. It was super fun, so I practiced a lot and from then until now, I don’t do anything else. I just implement what I enjoy and like to entertain my audience that way.

FIV: We would also like to know what challenges you face and how much time it takes to create the perfect TikTok video?

Max: That’s really very different and difficult to say exactly. Acting is incredibly easy for me because it’s fun and that’s exactly what I’m into. Shooting time takes me between 20-30 minutes per video. The brainstorming takes more time. My goal is to come across as authentic as possible. Of course I don’t always succeed and I also get inspiration from other artists. But 95% of the content I create is my own content, which comes from my own thoughts and ideas. That’s what often takes a lot of hours, but what I also enjoy so much at the same time.

Werewolf, bad boy or rather jealous ex-boyfriend?

FIV: Although many millions of people use the app TikTok, it has only recently become so popular in Germany. One million people follow you on the platform and the trend is rising. How does this success feel for you and how does it support your acting career?

Max: It’s unbelievably great and impossible to describe. I never thought I would make it this far. I am definitely proud of that. I will be the first German-speaking Actor TikToker who cracks the 1Mio – unimaginable. I never learned professional acting, but with many hours of work I taught myself everything.

FIV: You’ve already posted over 700 TikToks in which you demonstrate your acting skills. Whether as a werewolf, a jealous ex-boyfriend or a teacher, you slip into the most diverse roles and inspire your followers with new ideas every day. We’d like to know which roles you like to play the most on your TikToks and why?

Max: A good but very difficult question. I love all the roles because each of my videos has a purpose. They should give people a cool and loose acting, but more importantly I want to give a message. I think I favor POV’s. Picking a favorite is difficult because I love every facet I embody. Playing the bad boy is easier for me, which is why I’m more into supernatural. It gives me a kind of challenge. If you can play something cool and take the audience into another world, it’s just great feedback and at the same time not so easy. You realize how much work and a lot of thought goes into it, so I love the resulting challenge.

Greatest sense of achievement & future plans

FIV: Social media, especially TikTok can take up a lot of your time. Is the platform your main job, or do you do something else on the side? What has been your biggest success on the app so far?

Max: TikTok is definitely my main occupation. My biggest success was a video that has reached 17 million clicks. Unbelievable! I think what I succeeded in, besides the successful video, is the fact that very few people believed in me and I kept going. It wasn’t until I had 200,000 followers that I made my first video with another TikToker. My account is 100% based on my work and I am very happy and proud to have always stayed true to my line.

FIV: Last but not least, we would like to know how your friends and family support you in your TikTok career? Do you plan to make acting your profession in the future?

Max: I’m lucky that my best friend and my girlfriend are behind me. My dream would be to be able to act on stage or screen in a feature film.

Social media inspiration: Wisdm & Harry Styles

FIV: It’s easy to tell from your Instagram feed that you’re into fashion and you also express yourself through different styles, what makes a good outfit for you?

Nic: What makes a good outfit for me is that the colours match, it’s comfortable and above all that you feel good in it. You don’t need brand-name clothes for that. I also buy a lot of second hand and then enhance my outfit with accessories. I also think it’s cool when I can inspire people with my outfits, so everyone should be able to afford it.

FIV: You always like to occupy yourself with the things you particularly enjoy and thus come across many different impressions, who or what inspires you along the way in your style? And who is your biggest role model?

Nic: I get most of my inspiration from my Explore page on Instagram. I always see a lot of men’s fashion there. Otherwise I also get a lot of inspiration from Wisdm and Harry Styles.

Nic’s tips for your perfect outfit

FIV: When you get ready in the morning and stand in front of your closet, what are the three fashion essentials you always find there and what makes them so special?

Nic: The first thing I never miss are rings. They make an outfit complete for me, without them the details are missing. I also always wear my watch. I got it from my father when I moved out of home, so I associate a lot with the watch. And perfume also makes a lot of difference to me and is simply part of an outfit.

FIV: On TikTok, trends are set every day by you and others. Are there any current or older trends (in fashion, on TikTok in general, etc) that you think were particularly cool or terrible?

Nic: Basically I think everyone can wear what they want, as long as you feel comfortable. I myself wear a lot of vintage and I would also call myself an e-boy and I think the trend is cool. If I had to name trends now that I find terrible, I would say “Wellensteyn” jackets. Also this “Deutschrap” style is not really mine, because I don’t like it.

FIV: The situation of being so successful on social media is very special and especially something unimaginable for most others your age, what do you like most about what you do?

Nic: What I like most is that it’s still my biggest hobby, even though I do it every day. I like my life now so much better than my life before as a computer science student. I just feel very comfortable and in good hands in the fashion scene.

TikTok: More than just an app

FIV: You must experience a lot of crazy things with all the opportunities that come your way in your career. What moment in your career so far has left the biggest impression on you and why?

Nic: This is definitely the Milan Fashion Show I got to be at with BOSS this year. I’ve always wanted to go to a fashion show but never thought it was possible. Suddenly sitting in the front row with other influencers like Caro Daur and Leonie was an incredible feeling. For me it was and is very special.

FIV: It’s clear that you experience many exciting things, but of course they don’t always take place in the same city and sometimes not even in the same country. Are you on the road a lot thanks to TikTok, if so how do you deal with having a constantly changing environment?

Nic: Due to the Corona Pandemic I don’t get to travel much anymore, of course. But I love to travel, to get to know new people and cultures. I am a very open person and being on the road is just fun. I’m also looking forward to when that will be possible again.

FIV: On the Internet, of course, you only ever see what you reveal about yourself. Most of the time it’s only the particularly positive things that make a person, but what is your worst quality?

Nic: I’m already on my mobile phone a lot, which is of course also work-related, but I still want to change that. I know that it’s unhealthy, but it’s just a lot of fun to be in contact with my community.

FIV: When you are really down because something went wrong in your everyday life or you had a fight with someone, what cheers you up?

Nic: In fact, the DM’s from my followers or posts from fanpages always cheer me up too. Generally the support of my community. No matter how bad my day goes, they always manage to cheer me up again.

FIV: Finally, one last question, of course everyone has wishes and dreams in life, what do you wish for your future?

Nic: I wish to be able to travel again and thereby get to know new people and cultures. Therefore, it is even more important that we all deal responsibly with the current situation and stick to the measures so that things get back to the way they were as soon as possible.

Portrait Sebastian Schmidt: Jobs, Family & Leisure

33-year-old Sebastian Schmidt settled in the cultural and cosmopolitan city of Cologne a few years ago, in 2010 to be precise. Up to this point, however, he has already lived in Münster for his studies in German language and literature at the WWU, moved to Berlin for his first journalistic experiences at the Axel Springer publishing house and then from journalism to PR in Hamburg. Single Sebastian lives and travels without a steady human companion so far, but his dog is always by his side for most activities and travels and is part of his social media posts. The German-born journalist is one of the most interesting influencers of our time.

Who’s Alma?

His one and a half year old bitch follows him around for a year now. Sebastian is single, but is happy to have Alma by his side. Being Food and Frutarian: The new top topic

Meanwhile, our diet is an ever-growing topic. Vegetarian, vegan or rather live as a frutarian? These are the questions you ask yourself during the time of climate change, global warming and the debate about factory farming and healthy eating. Sebastian trusts the phrase “a little bit of everything” the most. On his Instagram page, he provides tips, recommendations and ideas for cooking in an extra highlight. Of course, he gets support from one or the other cooperation with companies that offer various things in the field of food and nutritional supplements. A lot of fruit and vegetables, pasta and now and then something meaty or fishy ends up on the Cologne role model’s plate. However, he also often treats himself to breakfast, coffee or lunch outside his four walls. Sebastian is always on the lookout for new and exciting dishes and varied restaurants, bars and cafés. Instagram pictures are not to be missed. Most of the time, he even includes the names and adresses of the places he visited.

Designers: Fashion, Furniture & Co.

The biggest point that separates him and other influencers, male or female, is that he has a knack for interior design, as well as art. One area that takes up a lot of space, especially on his blog, is his previous homes. He shows step by step how he himself divides the floor plan, chooses furniture and their colors, shapes and materials, up to finishing, furnishing and decorating the apartment. His style is old-fashioned minimalist with the odd modern touch, whether it’s a colourful kitchen front, unusual chairs or just pastel-coloured vases on the dining room table. His self-designed artwork also finds a place in his vintage apartment and its white high ceilings. All of his furnishings have been perfectly coordinated to give the impression that it is a model apartment for an upcoming magazine photo shoot. His passion is probably inherited from his parents, who also always focused on a “beautiful” home.

After he has often rearranged and redecorated his children’s room, he now has even more space in his own apartment and even more opportunities to pursue his passion. When asked if he could imagine working as an interior designer, the 33 year old answers optimistically that he could definitely imagine it and that he is looking positively ahead and seeing what else is in store for him. As a final question, what is his highlight and favorite place in his apartment, he answers that he spends most of his time with his family and friends in his centerpiece, his dining room. The dining room, with a four-foot ceiling, has only one dining table with enough chairs for impromptu visitors. It is his favorite place to dine, but because of its size, it is also his almost daily workspace where he has a breathtaking view of the most beautiful house front on the street.

Interview with FIV Magazine & Sebastian Schmidt

FIV: As a public figure, you’re constantly on the road and working very hard.
You are an influencer. Is all the work a hobby for you or do you need to get away from the social media life from time to time?

Sebastian: I’ve been running my IG channel since 2012 and I launched my blog sebastiansview.com 2 years later. At that time, the term “Influencer” in today’s sense (and especially in the sense of a professional field) did not yet exist. In the last few years, this beautiful hobby or passion has developed into an important professional mainstay for me. What many don’t know, however, is that I still also work as a teacher a few days a week. Therefore, the social media life is not 24/7 in the permanent focus for me and I feel both jobs as a positive balance for each other.

FIV: Your dog Alma, has been by his side for a year and a half now and is also well known on social media. How did it come about that you bought a dog? Does the daily routine work when you are often on the road? Alma is now a permanent fixture on your Instagram account. Have you considered creating a dedicated Instagram page for Alma?

Sebastian: I’ve always been a big dog lover, I like to be outside and since I also moved into a big apartment right next to a park last year, it was the right time for me. Since, as I said, I also work as a teacher, I’m not as often away as some other bloggers. However, I do like to travel during the holidays or sometimes on extended weekends. Either Alma comes with me or she goes on vacation with my parents or good friends. I have never thought of an IG page for Alma, nope.

Travel wherever he wants

FIV: As mentioned, you travel a lot. What was your absolute favorite trip and why?

Sebastian: I love Bali! An insanely versatile island with a very special vibe. Actually, I had planned another trip there last month, which I had to postpone due to Corona, of course.

FIV: Have you ever thought about creating a YouTube channel to take your viewers through your life in a more real way?

Sebastian: Nah, I love expressing myself in photos. For more insights into my life I like to use Instagram Stories. Youtube is a medium that requires an incredible amount of time, passion and skill if you want to do it well. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time and the muse for it at the moment.

FIV: You have already lived in a few cities. Among them were Hamburg, Berlin and Munich. What made you move to Cologne? Does something special connect you with Cologne?

Sebastian: I moved to Cologne exactly 10 years ago after my studies and for my traineeship. For me, Cologne is the city with the biggest heart that I know! I feel at home here, my friends live here and I want to stay here.

FIV: To get back to the topic of travel. What does travel mean to you and what are your favorite things to take with you?

Sebastian: Travelling means freedom for me. The freedom to move wherever I want. The freedom to get to know new countries and cultures and the freedom to relax and recharge my batteries in places I find exciting. I like to travel alone, with Alma and/or good friends.

Fashion, Design & Interior

FIV: How would you describe your clothing style and your interior design style? Describe yourself in 3 words.

Sebastian: Both my clothing and interior design style: timeless, clean and classic.

FIV: You are very well known in fashion with your social media channels. What is your favourite piece of clothing in your wardrobe at the moment?

Sebastian: So it’s summer, everything is made of linen: linen shirts, linen pants, linen suits, etc….

From hobby to profession: becoming a designer

FIV: You are not only active in fashion, but also have a fable for interior design. How did it come about that you started it as a hobby?

Sebastian: I’ve been interested in beautiful environments since I was a little kid and remember regularly rearranging and redecorating my nursery. In this area, I also inherited a lot from my parents, for whom a “beautiful” home was always important. In my own apartments, I then also gradually had more space to live out this passion.

FIV: Would you ever work as an interior designer if you had the chance?

Sebastian: Definitely, I could imagine that very well. Let’s see what time will bring

Favourite colour & favourite place: Sebastian’s recommendation

FIV: Your Instagram account has a color scheme, but fashion and interior design is more than just a handful of colors. What are your two favorite colors?

Sebastian: I like earthy colours like brown, grey, beige but also white, blue and green very much.

FIV: You as an interior designer on Instagram and your blog, where would you say is your favorite place in your home and why?

Sebastian: I love the dining room in my new apartment. The high ceilings of almost four meters, the stucco decorations and the view of the beautiful facades in the street make this room so special. There’s only one large dining table here, where I not only enjoy spending long dinner evenings with friends but also work every day.

Way to professional photography – Tips, role models & work

FIV: In times of the Internet and social media, photographers are indispensable and can be found in almost every niche. How did you come to your field? Is there a story how you came to become a photographer?

Stefan: I call my niche simple craft, photography. Not everybody is able to do that, although it seems that the whole social media is made up of photographers.
“Bobo – My mother’s childhood friend” is my story. We had many photos lying around at home, one was very special – a self-portrait double exposure of my mother and him – that was the foundation for my photography.

FIV: As a photographer, you are often under time pressure or in a hurry. What tips can you give us to help you get through the whole thing?

Stefan: You cannot turn the clock! Most of the time I am very absorbed in my work and I don’t like to be put under pressure. It is best not to pay attention to the time. And if there is not enough time, there is a new day.

FIV: Your paintings seem to have a certain style. Do you have a role model or what do you get inspired by? What do you want to express with your work?

Stefan: My work consists of many thoughts, dreams, personalities, fantasies and moments, the expression is the photo itself. I don’t know if this can be called “style”.

FIV: What exactly do you do in your work and what things should you pay special attention to? Would you say that work can become monotonous? What do you find appealing in your work and what is your recipe for a lack of drive?

Stefan: My work ties in with the interface of modernity, in which I search for and open up new possibilities of representation and ways of doing things through the invention of photography and the examination of this technique.
Special attention: Motifs and possibilities of representation from Surrealism, Abstraction, Expressionism and Naturalism, but also from early photography and silent film cinema, return. Despite the visible inspiration and references to art historical models, my works are not mere imitations or replicas. Rather, I succeed in taking up the aesthetics and transferring them to current pictorial themes. In doing so, my pictorial language is used in its mode of action to focus on levels of the dream, the grotesque and the subconscious. Thereby temporal levels are inscribed in my works, which link the past with the present and stimulate fantasies and visions with their visionary character.

Or, to describe it in simplified words: “Mental freedom is the air I breathe. In general I am influenced by life, I feel myself as an observer and visualist who loves simplicity and time”. Limitation and standstill feel incredibly unnatural to me. Perfection is very important to me, and when I have achieved it, I show the imperfect to potentiate the perfect, it can’t get monotonous.

FIV: Stefan, would you say that being a photographer is a normal job like any other, or does a photographer sacrifice a part of his free time?

Stefan: My free time is very important to me, I use it consciously to reflect, to recharge my batteries and to feel. I would never sacrifice my free time, because it is a very important good, we all should appreciate that more, just like boredom!

FIV: When you think about the future, where do you see yourself in 5 years? What are your plans? I’m sure you already have some projects lined up.

Stefan: To answer this question adequately, I will probably need 5 years. Currently I am working on a project called “SMPH” which consists of many different series. There are many artists involved, the project lives on/with the time. Beyond that there are further plans, so answer follows in 5 years…

FIV: There are many good commercial photographers in almost every industry, how would you say your work stands out from the competition?

Stefan: Everything they can do, I can do better

FIV: Becoming self-employed is always a risky business and a big step. Where did your self-confidence for this step come from? Did you get support from someone special?

Stefan: The encouragement comes from my mother. The support always comes from my wife.

FIV: We know that the job of a photographer involves a lot of work. Do you work alone or do you have employees or partners who support you in your work?

Stefan: Basically I do everything alone, but this would never be possible without my helpers, assistants, friends and family.

FIV: Your style is very artistic. You bring elements into your photographs, such as flowers or shadow plays. How do you know how you want to portray the model, where do you get your creativity from?

Stefan: Many elements are used consciously, others are the result of mistakes. Mistakes bring me forward.

FIV: Under your pictures (sometimes even in the picture) there are quotations. What do you associate with these quotations? Or in other words: How do you come up with the titles of the photo series?

Stfean: The quotes/titles reflect my personal feelings, my emotions.

FIV: Last but not least, what would interest me very much is: what has been your greatest success so far? How did you feel about it?

Stefan: Photography is my life, it is happening now and yesterday is memories, my photographs. The morning, are my thoughts and my dreams, they are uncertain and free

Youtuber, influencer, athlete and future mother

FIV: Hi Shawn! With more than 1.7 million followers on Instagram, you are part of Nashville’s most popular influencer. When did you start blogging and what key message do you hope to impact followers through your posts?

Shaw: I started blogging 3 years ago and have tried to focus on being as real and vulnerable as possible with my followers. I feel like we live in a world that only accepts perfection, Andrew and I are almost against that and show that life isn’t perfect but it can be beautiful in its own way. I think overall we do our best to promote positivity in all our posts.

FIV: As an American gymnast and 2008 Olympic gold medalist, you are a successful and amazing athlete! What were your keys to success? What advice could you give to people who dream of making their dreams come true, like you?

Shawn: I would say you have to fall in love with something to be successful. Falling in love with it means accepting all the challenges and sacrifices that come with it. As for my keys to success, having fun and working hard have paid off for me. Always remember to have fun, always.

FIV: Youtube is one of your favorite jobs. What are the biggest challenges of being a Youtuber?

Shawn: Some of the biggest challenges would be sharing your life with the world and still trying to keep some of it for yourself. It’s hard to find that healthy balance of sharing the right amount without giving it all away. On top of that, it’s hard to stay relevant and keep making videos that our audience wants to see!

Sports training – Daily workout routine

FIV: Part of your Instagram account and YouTube channel revolves around sports training. What is a good daily workout routine for you?

Shawn: I’ve gotten into a routine where I try to work out at least 30 minutes a day. I find that High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has been the most rewarding for my body. It helps alleviate a lot of the pain that comes with pregnancy!

Love – How does it love right?

FIV: You and your husband are so sweet and beautiful! How did you two meet? Do you have any tips on finding the right love?

Shawn: Andrew and I actually have a pretty crazy love story. Oddly enough, we met through Andrew’s older brother Guy, who was an Olympic cyclist. I met Guy at the London Olympics, where I talked to him about considering competing at Vanderbilt, and he immediately thought of hooking me up with his younger brother Andrew. It only took a few special dates before I knew Andrew was the one for me. The advice Andrew and I always give is to know that a relationship isn’t easy and you have to be committed to working at it. We do our best to show people that relationships aren’t perfect – if you’re willing to work hard and love that person and all their flaws, then a relationship really grows.

Pregnancy – proper preparation

FIV: Congratulations on your pregnancy! Do you realize you’re going to be a mom? How are you feeling?

Shawn: Thank you!!!! I really still can’t believe it, it’s the greatest miracle and Andrew and I couldn’t be more excited to meet Baby East.

FIV: On your YouTube channel you have shared many videos about your pregnancy. As an athlete, what does your daily exercise routine look like to prepare for childbirth?

Shawn: I just try to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I focus on eating, sleeping, and working out a healthy amount. I try not to be too intense with my workouts, but getting at least 30 minutes in each day is my goal. I want to keep my muscles fresh during this pregnancy. The healthier I keep my body, the healthier the birth will be!
