What is a layered look?

The layered look (also known as layering ) describes the deliberate layering of different items of clothing. Different lengths, textures and weights are combined in such a way that each layer remains visible and makes its own contribution to the overall look. The layered look works all year round – but it really comes into its own in fall and winter.

The three levels of the perfect layered look

First level: The property

Direct contact with the skin – must fit and not interfere:

• Tight-fitting long sleeve or turtleneck
• Slim cardigan or fine shirt
• Close to the body, never too wide – so that the next layers don’t puff up

Second level: The centerpiece

Provides volume and character:

• Oversized blazer, cardigan or cardigan with texture
• Vest (puffer vest or knitted vest) – currently the trendiest layering piece
• Short jacket or crop bomber jacket

Third level: The conclusion

Protects you from the cold and frames your look. Trench coats, which you should have in your capsule wardrobe anyway, are particularly versatile here:

• Long coat or trench coat
• Oversized leather jacket
• Buffer coat (strongest in neutral tones)

Layered look with dresses and skirts

Layering doesn’t just work with tops. A midi dress over a turtleneck sweater is one of the strongest fall looks ever. Alternatively: jeans or tight trousers under a wide swinging dress or maxi skirt – gives new proportions and keeps you warm.

Colors and textures in the layered look

Two principles work reliably:

• Monochrome layered look: All layers in the same color but different textures – leather plus knit plus satin makes for a perfect interplay
• Tone-on-tone: gray plus beige plus white – never boring, always harmonious

What doesn’t work: too many patterns on top of each other. Maximum: one pattern per outfit, the rest plain.

Layered look playing with proportions

The key rule of thumb: short over long or long over short – never the same length. A short blazer over a long shirt that peeks out at the bottom. A long cardigan over a short dress. The differences in length are what make layered looks exciting.

• Puffer Vest: Over turtleneck and under coat – works and looks like a professional combination
• Long cardigan: the most versatile centerpiece – as a coat replacement or under a jacket
• Turtleneck dress: the look is complete with a cardigan over it and a coat on top
• Oversized flannel shirt: tied around the waist to create a casual third layer without any extra effort

What is a capsule wardrobe?

A capsule wardrobe is a collection of 15 to 30 items of clothing that are timeless, of high quality and perfectly coordinated. No fast fashion, no impulse buys – but well thought-out investments in pieces that will last for years. The concept was popularized in the 1970s by British designer Susie Faux and is more relevant today than ever.

These pieces form the foundation of every functioning capsule wardrobe – timeless, combinable, worthy of investment:

1. White oversized shirt: the most versatile item of all – with jeans, blazer or skirt
2. Black slim-fit trousers: equally suitable for the office and the evening
3. Dark wash jeans: elegant enough for casual-smart occasions
4. White or cream blazer: enhances any outfit
5. Beige trench coat: the most classic coat in the world – as reinterpreted by the fashion world every season
6. Black dress (midi or knee length): For dinner, events and work

Color palette: How do I choose the right colors?

The golden rule: 70% neutral tones, 30% accent colors. Neutral tones are white, beige, black, gray and camel – they can be combined with anything. Accent colors should match your own type: Terracotta, olive green, dark blue or bordeaux are classics that hardly ever go out of date.

Quality over quantity: what should a capsule cost?

Good basics cost money – but much less than a constantly growing fast-fashion closet. Guide values:

• Basics (shirts, tops): 30-80 euros – Arket, COS, Uniqlo
• Pants and skirts: 60-150 euros – Mango, Zara Premium, H&M Premium
• Blazers and jackets: 100-300 euros – COS, & Other Stories, Massimo Dutti
• Shoes: 80-200 euros – good leather or suede shoes last for years

Building a capsule wardrobe: Step by step

Step 1: Sorting out

Everything from the wardrobe onto the bed. Anything that hasn’t been worn in the last 12 months goes. The rule of thumb: if you hesitate when you see the item, the answer is no.

Step 2: Identify gaps

What is missing? Which outfits can’t be put together right now? You might have a white shirt but no matching blazer – that’s a real gap that a targeted purchase can close.

Step 3: Conscious shopping

Shopping rule: If a new item cannot be combined with at least five other items in your wardrobe, it is not worth buying. This principle eliminates 80% of all impulse purchases.

Capsule wardrobe by season

Many capsule wardrobe approaches recommend a seasonal wardrobe with 30-40 pieces in total – 15-20 each for summer and winter, plus some year-round bridging pieces such as knitwear and trench coats. The layering guide explains the ideal way to combine layers.

Berlin Mitte. The air vibrated as you entered the room – dominated by a 30-meter-wide screen that opened with a powerful video intro. Elegant, almost like Chanel, but with that typical Ruétz signature: powerful, clear, feminine. The designer once again showed what she stands for – and has done for over ten years. “My looks should convey power without shouting loudly,” she said backstage. And that’s exactly what you could feel in every outfit.

• Berlin Fashion Week 2025

Drag Tropica – On 28.09. in Cologne

The 23-year-old drag queen from Cologne has been performing regularly on stages at drag shows, competitions and CSDs throughout Germany for around a year. On September 28, Jen Z will celebrate the premiere of her show Drag Tropica in Cologne, bringing a breath of fresh air to the Cologne drag scene. For the first time, she will be taking on the artistic direction and moderation herself, so Jen is all the more delighted if her drag show makes a successful debut. Drag Tropica will take place on 28.09.2024 at the queer youth center anyway in Cologne.

Jen Z is also part of Kölnchella, a queer music festival that regularly organizes cultural events in Cologne. The next Kölnchella will take place under the motto Kölnchelloween on 19.10.2024.

Interview: Drag, Tolerance & Performance

FIV: Hi Jen! Where did you get your drag name?

Jen Z: The name is obviously a pun on “Gen Z” or “Generation Z”. I find it funny how our generation is often categorized in the media as lazy or addicted to social media. I want to poke a little fun at that. At the same time, Gen Z has a very strong sense of justice and is very aware of the grievances around the world due to digitalization. We are very politically informed and stand up for our opinions.

FIV: What is your motivation for drag art?

Jen Z: I am simply on fire for the stage. I love performing and filling the room with my energy. As drag artists, we also have a special role in the queer community. We are often the loud ones, a mouthpiece, a role model for the community. And because we are on stage, we also have a responsibility.

FIV: What does this responsibility mean to you personally?

Jen Z: It’s important to me to create a safe space wherever I am, where every person feels comfortable and included. It’s about showing visibility as a drag artist to the rest of the community – even outside of our safe spaces – and fighting for those who aren’t as visible as we are.

FIV: What progress have we already made in terms of visibility and inclusion?

Jen Z: Compared to the past, a lot! But it’s important not to rest on our laurels now. Acceptance is still nowhere near as widespread as it sometimes seems in the mainstream. We still can’t go out without the risk of being hostile, insulted or physically hurt. There are more and more voices trying to reverse the progress we have made so far. There are attempts to instrumentalize us for some political propaganda and drag queens are falsely defamed.

FIV: What can you expect at a Jen Z show?

Jen Z: I love lipsyncing to high-energy pop songs that everyone knows and loves. With that and my stage presence, I captivate the audience. My aim is to give everyone an unforgettable evening! My shows should create a space in which everyone can forget everyday life and enjoy their time without worries.

FIV Magazine: How do you manage to create this atmosphere?

Jen Z: By keeping the energy high and making sure everyone in the room feels welcome. I want my shows to be a place where all people – regardless of their background or identity – can come together, have fun and celebrate themselves.

Store Events: Modelcastings & Closet Sales

Regular store events make the store a true oasis for fashion lovers and creative minds. Influencers and fashionistas often organize closet sales in the boutique. During my exploration tour at Berlin Fashion Week, the boutique even served as the venue for an exclusive model casting in collaboration with the renowned model agency CM Models.

Limited availability: Unconventional opening hours

But what makes it special is not just the fashion itself, but also the unconventional opening hours: The boutique only opens its doors three days a week, for four hours at a time, to welcome fashion enthusiasts. From Thursday to Saturday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., fashion lovers have the chance to immerse themselves in the world of Y2K style.

The elegance in the change of time

Elegance followed clear rules for the longest time. Those who belonged to a certain social class were practically prescribed how they had to dress. There was hardly any individuality, and variations for one’s own combinations were rare. Elegance was thus a relatively rigid concept, defined from the outside and not really permeable.

Today’s current trends challenge the concept of elegance. It is no longer about following certain norms, rather the person behind the clothes comes to the fore. Individuality becomes the expression of elegance. How does one decide on a certain style and how does one succeed in finding a clear line for oneself despite the most extensive elimination of rules?

A good reference point for men today are their own idols. What makes them, how do they dress, what accessories do they wear? The stars wear every outfit consciously and often work with expensive style consultants. If you want to know what’s hot, it’s best to do some research on the Internet or take a look at a magazine.

Versatility is the key

Reinventing yourself every day – the best way to do that is with a wardrobe that is as colorful as possible. The men’s fashion from Ragman shows how it can be done. Classic, modern and sometimes a little crazy – and everything in as many combinations as possible. That’s what the wardrobe of the modern gentleman is all about. The only thing that runs through the variety of garments is a recognizable, individual style that is free of laws and rules.

The goal of fashion today is to consciously transgress boundaries on a small scale. Gender roles are broken up and deliberately played with. Unisex fashion plays a leading role in today’s definition of elegance. Of course, every fashion-conscious gentleman moves on a fine line here, because quickly their own experiments look like a costume or a disguise. As is so often the case, less is more. Traditional fashion, the elegance and gender roles may and must even be questioned, but in doing so it must not come to a persiflage. The person behind the fashion must still prevail, so the modern gentleman must not hide behind his experimental fashion style.

The role of accessories

In fashion today, accessories are more and more the most important element. They give the outfit a direction and complete it. As with clothing, accessories, such as a wristwatch, may be combined at will. However, it is important that each accessory takes on a role. The more practical an accessory is, the better it fits into the outfit.

Men’s fashion today is hardly definable and is in an important phase of discovery. Everyone is invited to experiment and redefine themselves. It takes courage, but it’s worth the leap over your own shadow.

Glasses with metal frame

Fashion designers have long been aware of the importance of eyeglasses, which are now available in a wide variety of styles. As figures from an eyewear study show, the number of people wearing glasses is growing steadily. More than 41 million adults – 23 million of them permanently – now wear glasses.

Reason enough why the visual aids are now constantly reinventing themselves and are available in many fresh styles. One of the highlights of the year are timeless glasses with filigree frames. Golden or copper-colored glasses with metal frames are particularly trendy. Whether in a circular or angular shape, such women’s glasses are easy to combine due to their discreet look and look good on almost everyone. Another advantage with these everlasting models is the noble accent, which makes a fashion statement with simple looks. While silver-colored glasses suit more reserved spectacle wearers, gold and copper-colored models bring the face more into focus. They attract attention and look good on wearers with warm skin tones.

Retro glasses: 70s and XXL frames

We all still know them: the colorful looks of the past, some of which have fallen into oblivion today. Some “dusty” styles, on the other hand, are experiencing a fashion revival. Vision aids are also getting an extra dose of retro feeling in 2023. Large and extravagant models in 1970s style in particular are seen as trendy. Of course, horn-rimmed glasses or variants with XXL frames are anything but inconspicuous. Therefore, you should coordinate the statement glasses with your outfit.

For example, they look cool with mom jeans, an oversized sweater and retro sneakers. For even more 70s, you can bring out the flared pants, boho dresses or platform shoes from the closet again. All in all, these models radiate maximalism in a dignified way, with which you show stylish attitude.

Glasses with gradients

This trend is especially aimed at extroverted personalities who like to lay on the fashion thick! We’re talking about glasses with frames that feature bright color gradients. The stronger and more colorful the design, the more stylish it is.

However, brown or natural shades inspired by soft natural materials like wood and sand are also allowed. They primarily emphasize our natural side and are therefore suitable as creative, but discreet everyday glasses. Glasses with color gradients are also the perfect companions for monochrome outfits. These glasses look especially advantageous on a face shape with a narrow forehead and wide jaw. Then they act as a harmonizing counterpart and balance the “plump” lower half of the face.

Transparent frames

A super-clean pair of glasses that nevertheless immediately catches the eye is one with a transparent frame. It stands out simply because of its unusual shape. However, the frame can and may still bring a touch of color.

The advantage of these models is their open shape. This automatically makes the look more friendly and fresh. Last but not least, these glasses are real combination wonders that adapt to the complexion and skin color. Thus, they complement both jeans and blazer or the wedding dress.

Aviator glasses: Leather jacket and boots

Not only the stars and starlets are crazy about the so-called aviator glasses. These glasses become unique thanks to their drop-shaped lenses. In the past, these models were mostly something for men, but today, in addition, they are making their way into women’s fashion. Aviators harmonize perfectly with leather jackets and rocking boots. But they can also be worn as a contrast to feminine outfits. These glasses, which are known to take up a lot of space, go particularly well with large-size faces. People with a small or delicate face better reach for a less conspicuous variant.

Sustainable eyewear: Green Fashion

More and more people are consciously opting for more sustainability in everyday life – including “green eyewear”. With green eyewear, the look clearly takes a back seat to the materials and the manufacturing process. Stylish sustainable vision aids can still be and give something back to the environment at the same time. Among the latest trends in these (currently) niche products are sustainably produced models made from bio-plastics. Although fairly produced, these glasses bring the same or higher quality standards than their non-sustainable competitors.

In addition, frames made from renewable raw materials such as wood or cotton are very popular. The “back to nature” models inspire all spectacle wearers who prefer a sustainable and long-term alternative and still want an aesthetically pleasing model.

Which sunglasses are currently considered trendy?

Sunglasses are a category in themselves. Just like, for example, trendy autumn and winter coats, they belong to the seasonal clothing. Wearers prefer to wear these UV-resistant models in the warm summer months. As with “normal” glasses, these casual models are subject to trends.

This year, the so-called shield sunglasses are gaining a place in the fashion world. What is striking about them is the continuous plastic or polycarbonate lens that encloses the eyes. This offers wearers a wide field of vision and good sun protection. On top comes a portion of coolness, so outdoor fans and athletes in particular benefit from these models.

This year, futuristic sunglasses in the “Matrix” style are also an integral part of the trends. The dark tinted lenses with thin metal frames are perfect for the rock look. You wear the narrow models directly on the nose and deliberately do without nose pads. This means that the narrow glasses only offer limited sun protection – but that’s not (usually) what matters to the wearers.

How to choose the right shape of glasses?

Trendsetters should find the right shape of glasses in addition to the aesthetic aspect. It is not at all difficult to find out which model of glasses suits one’s own face shape. For example, eyewear experts recommend round or oval frames for an angular face shape, which balance out the prominent face. Round face shapes, in turn, give angular models more contour. Oval and round vision aids are suitable for heart-shaped face shapes. This is because they soften the silhouette like a soft focus. Almost all shapes of glasses fit an oval face shape.

What makes the new collection stand out?

Nautilus shell and the golden section

The nautilus shell revealed an exciting geometric pattern – the Golden Spiral. This mathematical sequence was already explored in the 13th century by Leonardo Fibonacci, an eminent mathematician. The perfect proportion and recurring nature of this design greatly inspired Massimo Gismoni. He decided to pick up this pattern in his new collection.

Genesi Collection

The jewelry pieces of the Genesi collection are characterized by their high quality and attractive design. They are the result of meticulous craftsmanship. Each piece of jewelry is designed by Massimo Gismondi himself and visualized in 3D using the latest technology. After fine-tuning, a prototype is created, which is finally made of precious gold.

Supplement with pink sapphires

The latest addition to the Genesi collection features delicate pink sapphires that add a soft touch to the collection. The pieces in the collection, such as rings, necklaces, earrings and bracelets, are designed with contemporary elegance. They subtly complement the existing variants in rose gold with emeralds and white ceramic, and in white gold with diamonds.
