Backstage interview with Marcel Ostertag
We interviewed designer Marcel Ostertag exclusively behind the scenes of his Fall / Winter 2024 runway show before it began. Backstage at the Verti Music Hall, Berlin:
FIV: Marcel, to start with: How are you feeling today?
Marcel Ostertag: I’m fine, I’m still very relaxed. I’ve already been able to do the odd interview backstage and have already seen a few shows. It’s still exciting, especially just before the first model line forms backstage and the music starts. That’s the moment when I start to get nervous.
FIV: Has your nervousness changed over the years?
Marcel Ostertag: No, not really. I’m always very focused before the show, as I’m working on many construction sites at the same time. The nervousness really only sets in when the show starts.
FIV: This year you are supporting a project close to your heart with your participation. Why did you choose the Berlin animal shelter?
Marcel Ostertag: I have been active in animal welfare for a long time and support the Berlin animal shelter and two animal welfare organizations in Portugal. Animal welfare is very close to my heart, not least because I have adopted dogs through these channels myself. My mother runs a sanctuary, so animal welfare has always been a part of my life.
FIV: Your new collection is called “Flowers in the Dark”. What inspired you to create it?
Marcel Ostertag: The collection is a response to the dark times we live in – war, discrimination, violence. I want my platform to convey positivity, beauty, love, empathy and respect. The fashion industry is currently leaning towards dark, apocalyptic themes and I want to be a ray of light at the end of the tunnel. “Flowers in the Dark” stands for color, hope and diversity.
FIV: Are you inspired by trends, or do you prefer your own style?
Marcel Ostertag: I naturally observe what is being worn and how style is developing on the streets. But my fashion is not dependent on trends. I strive to create fashion with longevity that doesn’t go out of fashion quickly. I’m interested in fashion that becomes a favorite.
FIV: How do you think the fashion business has changed in recent years?
Marcel Ostertag: There are many more fashion brands today and therefore more competition. A big change came with social media, which has turned the industry on its head. Influencers and brands that only exist online are now direct competitors. I stay true to my line, produce limited edition pieces and value sustainability and quality.
FIV: What do you see as the biggest difference in the fashion business compared to when you started your career?
Marcel Ostertag: The speed and presence of social media have changed everything. Fashion used to be more stationary, today it is available immediately and everywhere. I think the development towards more diversity and acceptance of different identities is positive. That wasn’t the case in the past. What I don’t like is the increasing focus on online shopping and the associated returns culture.
FIV: Thank you very much for the interview and your time, Marcel! I wish you a successful show.
Marcel Ostertag: Thank you, it was a pleasure.
