Porta Nigra: Must have seen

As far as history is concerned, the city offers not only the Porta Nigra, but also the cloister at Trier Cathedral, built in 1245, including a cemetery. The Porta Nigra, which translates into English as “black gate”, is the only remnant from Roman times in Trier. It is believed to have been built in the second century. Since 1986 the Porta Nigra has been under the protection of UNESCO. For just under 4 Euros you can admire the interior of the old Romanesque gate. The cloister at the cathedral of Trier was built in 1245 during the gothic period. The Trier Cathedral and the Liebfrauenkirche are connected by it and at the same time enclose the cemetery of the bishops lying there.

Reichsburg Cochem: The most important landmark

Reichsburg Cochem – Its history is both tragic and touching. The castle was built between 1100 and the first half of the 12th century. Uunder the command of a Lieutenant de Saxis the castle was set on fire, undermined and blown up on 19 May 1689. At that time, many castles in southwest Germany suffered the same fate. It was not until 1877, at the request of Louis Fréderic Jacques Ravené, that the ruins were reconstructed into a castle in neo-Gothic style to be used as a summer residence for his family. During the Second World War the Reich Minister of Justice Otto Georg Thierack had a special Nazi training centre for lawyers set up here. The mosaic portrait of St. Christopher created by an Italian master in 1870 was destroyed during the National Socialist era.
