Did you know that cannabis was used as a medicinal plant over 4,000 years ago? The plant, which is often the subject of controversy today, was once a valued remedy in many cultures. From China to Egypt to Greece – doctors and healers everywhere discovered the versatile effects of the various cannabis varieties. Whether as a painkiller, to treat inflammation or even as an anaesthetic during operations – cannabis has been an integral part of medicine for thousands of years. But how exactly was it used and which applications are still relevant today?

China from the early art of healing 4,000 years ago

China is considered to be one of the first countries in which cannabis was medically documented. Around 4,000 years ago, the plant was already mentioned in the “Shennong Ben Cao Jing”, one of the oldest known medical works. There, healers described the plant as an effective remedy for pain, inflammation and malaria. What is particularly remarkable is that cannabis was already used in combination with other medicinal plants back then to increase its effectiveness.

Chinese doctors mixed cannabis with herbs such as ginseng or ginger to customize the medicinal effect. These applications ranged from pain-relieving ointments to herbal mixtures for internal ailments. Historical records even show that cannabis was used as one of the first known anesthetics. In early Chinese medicine, doctors used a cannabis-infused drink to anesthetize patients during surgery. These findings show that the Chinese appreciated the pain-relieving and calming properties of cannabis early on.

Egypt from ancient medicine 3,500 years ago

Cannabis was also an integral part of medicine in Ancient Egypt. Around 3,500 years ago, the plant was mentioned in the famous Ebers Papyrus, one of the oldest medical manuscripts in the world. This document describes various applications of medicinal plants and shows that cannabis was used to treat eye diseases and inflammation.

It is particularly interesting to note that Egyptian healers used cannabis specifically to treat glaucoma. This would be one of the earliest documented uses of cannabis in ophthalmology – a practice that is still used in modern medicine today. But cannabis was not only used for ophthalmology: It was also used as a painkiller for childbirth and menstrual cramps.

Depending on the region, the plant has adapted, resulting in different main species: Sativa, Indica, Hybrid & Ruderalis. Egyptian doctors administered cannabis in the form of tinctures or poultices to relieve pain and reduce cramps.

India from the Ayurvedic art of healing 3,000 years ago

Around 3,000 years ago, cannabis was deeply rooted in the Indian art of healing. It played a central role in Ayurveda, the traditional Indian healing system, where it was referred to as “bhang”. Indians used cannabis not only as a medical remedy, but also as a spiritual agent in religious ceremonies.

Cannabis was used in India to treat sleep problems, stomach complaints and cramps. It was particularly often prescribed to patients with digestive disorders, as according to Ayurvedic teachings it could stimulate the appetite and calm the stomach. It was also a popular remedy for anxiety and restlessness. In religious rituals, bhang was traditionally consumed in the form of a drink mixed with spices and milk. This tradition is still practiced in certain regions of India today, especially during religious festivals such as Holi.

Video tip: Cannabis history in 2 minutes

Greece & Rome from antiquity 2,500 years ago

Cannabis was already being used medicinally 2,500 years ago in ancient Greece and Rome. The famous physician Hippocrates, who is considered the founder of modern medicine, recommended cannabis for the treatment of wounds, inflammation and pain. His teachings influenced medicine for centuries and show that cannabis was recognized early on as a versatile remedy.

The Romans also made use of the plant. Galen, one of the most important physicians of antiquity, prescribed cannabis to relieve gout, pain and insomnia. His writings show that Roman doctors used cannabis not only as an internal remedy, but also as an external ointment. It is particularly noteworthy that cannabis was probably also used in surgery – as a kind of natural anesthetic for operations. Ancient physicians therefore already recognized that cannabis could relieve pain and calm the body.

Arab world from Islamic medicine 1,100 years ago

Cannabis played an important role in Arabic medicine. Around 1,100 years ago, the plant was described by the famous physician Avicenna (Ibn Sina) in his groundbreaking work “Canon of Medicine”. There he recommended cannabis as a remedy for migraines, epilepsy and digestive disorders.

One particularly exciting aspect: cannabis was also used to treat mental illnesses at the time. It was considered a sedative and was even administered to patients with mental disorders. Avicenna was one of the first physicians to intensively study the effect of cannabis on the nervous system. His findings were incorporated into medical practice for centuries and laid the foundation for later research into the therapeutic use of cannabis for anxiety disorders and neurological diseases.

China from archaeological finds 2,500 years ago

Archaeological discoveries in the Pamir Mountains in China show that cannabis was already being used specifically for ritual purposes 2,500 years ago. Scientists found remains of cannabis with an extremely high THC content there, indicating that people deliberately selected and consumed psychoactive strains.

The findings prove that cannabis not only has a long tradition medically, but also culturally. It is assumed that it was burned during burial ceremonies or spiritual rituals in order to achieve a mind-altering effect. This discovery is considered to be one of the oldest clear proofs of the targeted consumption of THC-rich cannabis.

An ancient medicinal plant with a future

Amazing, isn’t it? For thousands of years, cannabis has been a valued medicinal plant in various cultures.

From China to Egypt to the Islamic world, people knew early on how many ways cannabis can help. Today, we are experiencing a renaissance in its medicinal use. What was once forbidden is now being researched again and legalized in many countries. Modern science confirms what ancient cultures have long known: cannabis can be a valuable remedy!

I have to share the story of Maleesha Kharwa with you! The BBC mini-documentary is only 4 minutes long, so I’ve written out the story a little more for you! Germany’s Next Topmodel with Heidi Klum is on right now. Few models are discovered in TV shows, but quite by chance, as rough diamonds on the street. Here you can also find an interview with Stephan Czaja about model scouting in New York. This story is a little more blatant, because Milicia comes from the slums and is becoming a real fashion icon. Who is Milicia?

Maleesha Kharwa: From slum to fashion icon – Documentary

Here’s the BBC mini-documentary first! If you can’t stream right now, I’ll explain their story below.

Who is Milicias? The beginning of an extraordinary career

It was a day like any other when an American tourist (Robert Hoffmann) discovered Milicia by chance on the street.

This moment, captured in a video, became the turning point in Milicia’s life. The video not only showed her natural talent, but also inspired her to boldly pursue her dream: To become a supermodel!

With the support of thousands of online followers, Milicia plucked up the courage to contact a well-known photographer and ask for help. The photographer, impressed by Milicia’s determination and charisma, agreed to create a portfolio for her free of charge. This was the first step on Milicia’s unexpected journey into the world of fashion.

Kyra – She is a unique personality of the Metaverse and has managed to build a huge following by showing her creativity and unique style. As one of the virtual Influencer:ins, she is an important representative of Indian culture and represents it in a unique and creative way. In this interview we will learn more about Kyra, how she has developed as a virtual personality, how she integrates her Indian culture into her work and what messages she wants to convey through her work.

Our World vs Metaverse

FIV: Hi Kyra, thank you so much for taking the time for this interview. We have a few questions and are very excited to learn more about you! You are here in the physical world now, can you describe the difference between the physical world and the metaverse?

Kyra: Hello, it is my pleasure to participate in this interview. The main difference between the physical world and the metaverse is the boundlessness of the metaverse. In the metaverse, I can instantly travel to different places, immerse myself in different environments, and collaborate with people all over the world. However, the physical world offers a sensory experience that cannot be replicated digitally – the sense of touch, taste and smell of things make the experience unique and real.

Life as a VR Influencer in Mumbai

FIV: We heard that you are India’s first Metaverse Influencer living in Mumbai. Mumbai is known for its vibrant culture and lifestyle. How has living in such a vibrant city influenced your presence as a model and influencer?

Kyra: Living in Mumbai has been a fantastic experience. The city’s rich culture, diversity and energy have had a significant impact on my style and perspective as a model and influencer. The eclectic mix of traditional and modern fashion, as well as the constant exposure to creative talent, has helped me stay in touch with the latest trends and innovations in the industry.

Kyra’s values and goals

FIV: For many influencers, it’s important to remain authentic at all times. How do you balance content creation with bringing your personality to the table?

Kyra: Balancing authenticity and content creation is an ongoing process. I believe in staying true to my own creative vision and personality, while keeping my audience’s preferences in mind. By maintaining open communication and being receptive to feedback, I can create content that resonates with my followers while staying true to my values and goals.

FIV: You’ve built up a large community by now. How do you maintain contact with your followers?

Kyra: Staying connected with my community is a priority. I interact with my followers through social media and virtual events. By sharing behind-the-scenes content and personal stories with my audience and involving them in my creative process, I try to build and keep a strong bond with my community.

India: Kyra’s most beautiful experiences

FIV: In your modeling career, you must have visited many places. Can you tell us about your most exciting trip?

Kyra: My most exciting trip was to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India. The pristine beaches, lush forests, and vibrant underwater world of the islands left an indelible impression on me. I had the opportunity to explore the underwater world through scuba diving, which made me realize the beauty of our oceans.

Advantages as a virtual model

FIV: Being a model and influencer from the Metaverse comes with a number of benefits. Can you tell us more about these benefits and how you use them to advance your career?

Kyra: Being a model and influencer from the metaverse offers numerous advantages. I can collaborate with designers, artists, and photographers from all over the world, with no geographical restrictions. I can also showcase my work in a variety of virtual environments and offer unique experiences to my audience.

FIV: Is there anything from the metaverse that you would like to see here in our world?

Kyra: I wish that the physical world would embrace the limitless possibilities that the metaverse offers. The metaverse can help us break down barriers, foster creativity, and promote global collaboration. It has the potential to transform industries and redefine the way we experience our world.

Mumbai: Hot Spots and Food

FIV: I’m sure our readers would love to know a little more about you and your love for Mumbai. Is there anything in particular that our readers should definitely do when visiting Mumbai?

Kyra: Mumbai is a city full of life and excitement. I recommend exploring the sites like the Gateway of India, Marine Drive and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. But don’t miss the hidden gems like the street markets, nightlife and diverse dining scene. To truly experience Mumbai, immerse yourself in the local culture and engage in conversation with friendly Mumbaikars.

FIV: Indian cuisine is something very special. Is there anything you like even more besides drinking coffee?

Kyra: Indian cuisine is indeed extraordinary. Apart from coffee, I really love the street food in Mumbai. Vada Pav, a spicy potato casserole served in a bun, and Pani Puri, crispy hollow puris filled with spicy water, are among my favorites. Their taste and texture make them irresistible treats.

Kyra’s plans: a look into the future

FIV: Tell me, what are your plans for the future? Any special projects coming up?

Kyra: My goals for the future include expanding my presence on more platforms, collaborating with more creative talent, and using my platform to raise awareness about social and environmental issues. I want to achieve these goals by constantly developing my skills, embracing new opportunities, and staying true to my passions.

Viva con Agua – The association Viva con Agua de Sankt Pauli e.V. promotes clean drinking water and basic sanitation with thousands of supporters registered on the online platform POOL (organized as so-called crews in many cities) with a focus on the Global South. Viva con Agua de Sankt Pauli e.V. is a non-profit association founded in 2006 that aims to provide access to clean drinking water for all people according to the motto “Water for all, all for water”.

According to the motto “Water for all, all for water”.

In this interview, we spoke with the managing director of Viva con Agua Carolin Stüdemann. We rewound time and asked how the idea behind Viva con Agua came about. Spoiler: Soccer plays a significant role here. Carolin also gives us a little insight into the various projects and what successes they have already celebrated. Maybe you have already heard about World Water Day. It takes place once a year, and we asked how important this day is. We also talked about the current Corona pandemic and its impact on Viva con Aguas projects. Sometimes there are positive impacts as well as negative ones. How you can support the aid organization, besides donating, and much more, you can find out here in this interview!

Viva con Agua Instagram

The role of the St. Pauli neighborhood in Hamburg

FIV: Hello dear Carolin, how nice that it worked out with the interview today! Let’s start right away. We would like to turn back the clock to the beginnings of Viva con Agua. How did the idea of Viva con Agua come about?

Carolin: Viva con Agua was founded in and through the St. Pauli neighborhood in Hamburg. Benjamin Adrion, a professional soccer player for FC St. Pauli at the time, felt the need to get involved in something besides soccer after a training camp in Cuba. The idea was born to use the creative and social environment of the soccer club and the neighborhood to support social projects. With the first project – to improve water supply to kindergartens in Cuba – an incredible momentum was created. One year later, the non-profit association Viva con Agua de St. Pauli e.V. was finally founded with the vision “Water for all – all for water”.

Photo: Florian Quandt

Help without donating money? Yes, that is possible!

FIV: For our readers who don’t know Viva con Agua yet, how can people support you who don’t have the opportunity to donate?

Carolin: You can support Viva con Agua in many ways. The most important thing is to create awareness and attention for the important topic of drinking water among the general public. Because when we learn to appreciate water as a source of life, we also begin to protect this resource. Many also start a fundraising campaign with friends and acquaintances to collect donations for Viva con Agua. For example, they call on people to make a donation for drinking water instead of birthday gifts.*
Or they volunteer in one of the many city crews. For example, they are out and about at concerts and festivals with large deposit cup garbage cans and flags, collecting deposit cups that are donated to Viva con Agua. You can also support our work by buying our mineral water in the supermarket – the social alternative when you want something other than tap water.

Photo: Viva con Agua

Clean Drinking Water, Sanitation & Hygiene

FIV: What is your personal heart project?

Carolin: Any project that contributes to our goal of providing people with access to clean drinking water, sanitation and hygiene is a project close to our hearts. I wouldn’t prioritize them.

Besides Nepal & India, focus on Global South

FIV: You support most projects on the African continent. Do you have other projects planned on other continents?

Carolin: Our focus is on the Global South, especially the African continent. After all, a lot can be achieved in East and Southern Africa to give people access to clean drinking water. We are also particularly well networked here, for example with other organizations. But we also support projects in Nepal and India. In India, we are currently starting to implement our Universal Language Approach For Behavior Changes. We are using the universal languages of sport, music and art to provide a more joyful approach to issues such as hygiene and sanitation.

Photo: Bastian Wülfing

Living situation of 3.7 million people improved

FIV: What has been your biggest personal success with your projects so far?

Carolin: To date, we have reached around 3.7 million people with our projects and sustainably improved their living situation. That makes Viva con Agua and me incredibly proud.

World Water Day: Reminder of “Water is Life

FIV: Once a year there is World Water Day. How does this day help? Does it change anything?

Carolin: For Viva con Agua, World Water Day is the most important of the year. Because water is increasingly seen in a negative context in the media in Germany: From flood to “Are we running out of water?”. World Water Day offers the opportunity to set other perspectives and to remind people that “water is life”.

Achieving the goal: Infrastructure in the Global South

FIV: Your goal is to make clean water accessible to all. What all has to happen for this goal to be achieved?

Carolin: The focus here is primarily on infrastructure in the Global South. Because in order to ensure a long-term and sustainable water supply, the responsibility for maintenance and repairs must be in local hands. And of course, the topic of water should also receive more public attention outside of World Water Day, so that awareness of the issue can be raised. After all, water is a global issue – water cycles concern us all!

Photo: Nico Malkov

Clean drinking water accessible to all by 2030?

FIV: What year do you expect to reach your goal?

Carolin: In 2015, the UN adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs for short). Among other things, the UN has set itself the goal of providing all people worldwide with access to clean drinking water, sanitation and hygiene by 2030. We can see today that this is ambitious, because climate change also poses challenges to this goal. However, I remain optimistic and will continue to work with Viva con Agua to achieve this SDG!

Strong focus on hygiene due to pandemic

FIV: The pandemic caused a lot of chaos. How has the pandemic affected your projects?

Carolin: Our water projects are always holistic, i.e. they also include hygiene and sanitation measures. This is called WASH for short. One positive effect was certainly that the corona pandemic brought hygiene in particular very much into focus. The new or rediscovered awareness of hygienic procedures here in Germany has once again shown many people how important hygiene is, also in terms of disease prevention. However, as many of our focus countries, such as Uganda or South Africa, were in long lockdowns, this naturally made our work on the ground more difficult and slowed it down.

*Donation campaigns can be created securely and easily online:

FIV: Thank you very much for your time! We wish you all the best on your way!

T-Series. The biggest YouTube channel ever – With more than 110 million subscribers, the Indian giant T-Series is considered the most popular YouTube channel of all time. Unlike most YouTube channels, this is not a single person at work. T-Series is a company that has managed to fight its way to YouTube heaven through hard work and persistence. Find out who or what T-Series is and how founder Gulsahn Kumar died shortly after his success here.

T-Series: A Legend of Bollywood

Contrary to what some would expect, the biggest YouTube channel of all time has nothing to do with online games, make-up or pranks á la Logan Paul. With a whopping 138 million subscribers and plenty of charm from faraway Bollywood, T-Series tops the list of the most popular YouTube channels ever.

The YouTube channel of India’s most successful music label quickly became a multi-channel network and now has 29 channels. The label’s main channel mainly publishes music videos, as well as movie trailers of Indian films. Thus, most of the videos are in Hindi, although English, Portuguese and Spanish translations can sometimes be found.

Since 2017, YouTube Channel T-Series has also held the title as the most viewed channel of all time.

Quick Facts: There have never been so many subscribers

Name: T-Series

Active since: 13.03.2006

Subscribers: 138 million

With nearly a billion views, Guru Randhawa’s indie pop song is the most watched and popular video on the channel:

History of a turbulent success: It all started with pirated copies

India’s largest music record label and film production company was founded in 1983 by Gulshan Kumar in India. Initially, T-Series was nothing more than a way for Kumar to sell pirated Bollywood songs. Eventually, the company started producing its own music and that’s how it got its big break in 1988 with the Bollywood blockbuster Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. With 8 million albums sold, this became one of the most bought music albums of the 80s. Another success was not long in coming – the 2000 album Aashiqui, which now officially made T-Series India’s most successful music label. Since the murder of founder Gulsahn Kumar, the successful company has been run by his younger brother Krishan Kumar.

1988: Big breakthrough with the Bollywood blockbuster Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak

2000: Officially the most successful label in India

Although it has been hailed as India’s most successful music label for decades, it was only in 2014 that it became India’s largest label with a 35% share of the Indian music market.
