Retrofit solar system – The green revolution on German house roofs is in full swing. But low-energy houses are also very much in vogue. This is due not only to increased environmental awareness, but also to massively rising energy prices. More and more homeowners are therefore turning to solar energy systems on their roofs. In the long term, such a system promises not only cheaper electricity and greater independence from politics and utilities, but also a valuable contribution to climate protection – including attractive subsidies from the German government. But is retrofitting possible at all? And what do you have to watch out for? We have the most important answers.

When to retrofit a solar system and when not to?

The most important answer first: Retrofitting a solar system to existing buildings is possible at any time. Even if the effort for the realization seems to be very high, photovoltaic retrofitting has become a standard procedure that solar experts deal with on a daily basis. The actual procedure works, as far as planning and installation are concerned, in a similar way as for a new building.

The decisive factor for retrofitting a solar system is the possible electricity yield. The retrofit is only worthwhile if the installed system receives sufficient sunlight over the course of the year. The basis for such a consideration is a demand calculation. This takes into account the previous electricity consumption in kilowatt hours and serves to determine how large the photovoltaic system on the roof must be dimensioned.

If the building roof is shaded for large parts of the day due to an unfavorable location between buildings or trees, retrofitting a PV system is not worthwhile. This also applies if the roof surfaces are unfavorably oriented or too steep. Since slope and orientation are locally very individual, the analysis of a solar professional is essential. However, the following information can provide initial indications.

Retrofit criteria

Here are the criteria for when you can retrofit your roof with a solar system without any problems, in brief:

Feasible with standard procedures by experts

Works similar to new construction

Worthwhile when there is enough sunlight

Carry out requirements calculation

What requirements should my roof have?

A roof area that is as large as possible and faces south is ideal for retrofitting a PV system. However, roofs with an east-west orientation also have the potential to produce large amounts of electricity. However, solar experts like EWE-Solar can also plan systems in such a way that an effective power supply is possible through simultaneous occupancy in east-west as well as north orientation.

If possible, the roof surfaces should not be shaded or should not be exposed to shade for as much of the day as possible. An ideal electricity yield during the course of the day can be achieved with roofs that have an inclination between approx. 30 and 40 degrees.

Requirements of my roof

What should my roof optimally bring?

Large roof area

Optimal: orientation to the south

All right: east-west orientation

No shading

Inclination between 30 and 40 degrees

What do I always have to consider when retrofitting?

Retrofitting a solar system is an investment that will only pay off in the medium or long term. Accordingly, it is important that you rely on solid financing for the project. It takes several years until the point is reached where the saved energy costs exceed the investment sum including interest. When it comes to retrofitting a PV system, false economy is also out of place. Do not make the mistake of planning too tightly and without reserves. A slightly larger sized system is always the better option. It ensures that the supply is covered even if the energy demand increases in the future.

What if you decide to buy a sauna or an electric vehicle? If the system is too small, you would once again be dependent on mains electricity. The same applies to making the most of low solar radiation, e.g. in autumn and winter. The larger the system, the more energy it can generate even in poor conditions.

Tip: Installing a home storage system (home battery) makes it possible to store electrical energy that is currently being generated but not consumed. This is then available, for example, at night or on dark days.

More tips for retrofitting solar systems

1. mounting system: Each roof and each location offer different conditions for the roof installation. Accordingly, ask your installer for advice on the ideal mounting system. This should be adapted to the weather and weather conditions (wind and snow load).

2. caution: scaffolding is required: solar systems are usually installed at heights of more than 1.5 meters above ground level. Please note that the law requires the erection of scaffolding in this case.

3. timing: You can certainly have a PV system retrofitted at any time. However, since the area around the house is at least temporarily transformed into a construction site, the ideal time is when the roof is due for renovation anyway. This way, the solar installer can also use the standing scaffolding.

4. use additional space: The solar modules do not necessarily all have to be mounted on the roof. If there is not enough space for the desired dimensions, additional solar modules can also be installed on garages, canopies, etc.

5. compare offers: Retrofitting a PV system is a very individual matter. Accordingly, it is advisable to seek advice from several specialist companies and to submit an offer. Often, not only the prices differ, but also the individual solutions.

Conclusion: Is retrofitting solar systems worth it?

Retrofitting a PV system is easily possible on most roofs. Even in the case of shading or unfavorable roof orientations, PV experts can make the most of the situation. This means that nothing stands in the way of the dream of low-cost electricity from one’s own roof, even for owners of existing properties. But that’s not all: depending on the type and dimensions of the PV system, attractive subsidies are available.

Summer is here and the temperatures are rising! It’s the perfect time of year to start buying fresh fruits and vegetables again and pay attention to your diet. If you don’t have the time or inclination to cook, you don’t have to miss out on vitamins and minerals! The trend of smoothies and bowls is not only delicious, but it’s also an absolute stunner! While Instagram and Pinterest are already full of pictures of such bowls and smoothies, more and more brands are also offering these delicious and healthy drinks and meals. FIV Magazine got to know Wholey and interviewed the start up for vegan shakes and smoothie bowls!

Healthy nutrition with smoothies & bowls

FIV: The trend of healthy eating with smoothies and bowls for everyday is on the rise among young people. What is Wholey and how does Wholey work?

We are a young Berlin start-up offering ready-to-blend smoothies, vegan shakes and smoothie bowls. Our products are made from all-natural organic ingredients, are flash-frozen for the best vitamin and nutrient content and can be prepared at home in the blender in no time. Wholey is a healthy in-between snack and an Instagrammable Bali breakfast from your own freezer.

Vegan Bowls & Ingredients

FIV: People often talk about healthy smoothies in a variety of colors and sometimes even vegan. What are the ingredients of Wholey products?

It is important to us that all our products are made from organic and Demeter quality ingredients, as they not only have a higher content of plants’ own protective substances and therefore more nutrients, but are grown completely without chemical pollution. In addition, our fruits are picked at the highest level of ripeness – that is, enriched with the most vitamins – and then directly shock-frozen. In addition to fruits and various vegetables, such as cauliflower or zucchini, we also use selected superfoods (e.g. açaí, spirulina and maca), as well as nuts and herbs. This not only makes our products taste interesting and balanced, but also provides a wide range of important minerals and nutrients.

FIV: Your smoothies are frozen, why? And what are supercubes? And ready-to-blend smoothies?

Ready-to-blend means that our products are pre-portioned, so all you need is a little water and a blender to make our delicious smoothies and smoothie bowls. Our products are easily stored in the freezer and offer a shelf life of up to 9 months, so you can always have a healthy snack on hand without having to do a lot of shopping or fruit chopping. As mentioned earlier, our flash frozen ingredients have even more vitamins than commercially available fruit – the only thing fresher is freshly picked!

Our Supercubes are handmade in our Berlin factory and contain superfoods, coconut puree or acai puree and give the different varieties an extra taste and energy boost.

Start-Up: Wholey Concept & Experience

FIV: You are former competitive athletes who, with your experience, decided to create Wholey. How did the idea come about and how did you decide on your products? Since 2016 you have been producing smoothies and since February 2020 there are also bowls. How is the whole concept developing, how are your customers reacting to it?

The idea for our smoothies came to us because we ourselves were often faced with the problem of eating healthy and balanced with our busy schedules. Often we simply don’t have the time to stand in the kitchen for a long time and cook ahead or prepare fresh meals. Smoothies and shakes were therefore often our first choice when we were on the go or had a lot to do. However, many ready-made products on the market have a high sugar content due to the addition of juices or are heated for a long time – and therefore lack good vitamins. We wanted to do better!

In addition to our Smoothies & Shakes, since the beginning of the year there are also our Smoothies Bowls – for all those who prefer to spoon instead of drink! This was a logical extension of the range, also because we often already prepared our smoothies as bowls ourselves. Our customers especially love the super exciting Ocean Bowl with blue spirulina. You will also soon discover something new from Wholey away from the frozen food counter. Be curious.

FIV: There are now several brands on the market that produce smoothies. What makes Wholey stand out? Why should people try your products and subscribe?

Well, our products are simply tastier and better, that’s for sure. No, but compared to many other ready-made smoothies, our products really have more to offer! The fact that we only use organic fruit and vegetables alone makes us stand out from the crowd. And thanks to our variety of flavours, we have something for every taste: from the healthy green smoothie (The Real Green), to the slightly spicy variant (Ginger Ninja) or the berry variants such as Ban & Berries, to our vegan shakes such as the Choc Norris, which is particularly popular with children.

FIV: Some eat their bowl comfortably at home, others prefer to take a smoothie to go. How long does it take to prepare a smoothie and what should you bear in mind?

Depending on the blender power, our smoothies can be prepared within 45 to 90 seconds. The bowl also takes about the same amount of time. However, there are different preferences when it comes to the perfect consistency of a smoothie bowl: Some like it a little firmer and creamier, others a little more liquid. Those who prefer it more liquid should mix the bowl a little longer and also prepare it with more liquid. Everyone can be creative with the toppings. From berries to granola, nut puree and superfoods, there are no limits.

FIV: 4 reasons why you should test Wholey:

Our bowls are the perfect start to the day!

You get the full load of vitamins & nutrients and it tastes delicious too.

You can’t make a smoothie any faster or easier than this.

Our products will definitely boost your Instagram game – we promise!

Sustainability in food

FIV: The topic of sustainability is playing an important role for more and more people. How can people pay attention to this with your products?

At Wholey, we take the topic of sustainability very seriously and have recently added someone to our team who specializes in this very area and is picking apart every nook and cranny of our company. We are currently working hard on the issue and actively trying to get better and better at this. The holistic Wholey approach of a vegan diet based on organic products is already playing a big role and our packaging is also becoming more sustainable. Our bowl cartons can be disposed of directly in the waste paper bin and are completely recyclable, our insulation is made of straw and can therefore be disposed of in the organic bin, and for our smoothies we will soon switch to an even better solution.

We thank Wholey for the interview and can’t wait to test the bowls!

Glock: From the first pistol to “Generation 5

1963 marks the beginning of Glock’s perfection. The history of Glock KG by Gaston Glock began in Deutsch Wagram, Austria. In the beginning, consumer goods made of wood, plastics and metal were produced with only 3 employees. 1970-1979 came the first military products from Glock.

This included the development and start of production of the first military products, such as field knives (FM 78), components for fragmentation and practice grenades and machine gun belt links.

Pistols and G36 at Glock

1980-1982 the Glock pistol was born. In the early 80’s the semi-automatic Glock service pistol was introduced to the market. In 1999, the legendary Glock 36 was added. With its new slim design, the G36 offers next-level grip ergonomics. Since 2013, the frame of the G36 has also been equipped with the Glock accessory rail.

2017 marks the beginning of the next generation, the “Gen 5”. The Generation 5 combines the technology of the future with improved precision, versatility, speed and the usual reliability. Starting with the G17 Gen5 and G19 Gen5 models.

Quality since 1526: Made in Italy

In 1526, Beratta’s story began in the Val Trompia valley district in Italy, which includes the town of Gardone. The valley runs through the columbine mountains, a source of high-grade iron ore, the basis of Beratta’s success story. During the Middle Ages it was the centre of iron processing, and at the beginning of the Renaissance period it was known for its high quality weapons manufacturing.

Maestro Bartolomeo Beretta lived in Gardone and was a master cannon barrel maker. In 1526 Bartolomeo was paid by the Arsenal of Venice for the production of 185 arquebus barrels, making Beretta the oldest manufacturing company in the world!

Rumor has it that the 1526 purchase agreement is still in the company’s archives.

US market and success models

In 1975, Beretta introduced the Model 92 in 9mm. Today, the Model 92 is the most widely used self-loading pistol in law enforcement and the military worldwide.

Beretta entered the US market in 1977. This move proved to be extremely profitable for the company. In April 1985, the Beretta Model 92 defeated the Colt 45 to become the preferred handgun of the US armed forces.

Beretta continued to expand its line of the finest sporting firearms and added a high-end apparel line. In 1995, Beretta opened its first gallery in New York. Today there are Beretta galeries in Dallas, Buenos Aires, Paris, Milan and London.

Beretta’s website reports that the company produces about 1,500 unique pieces per day, 90% of which are sporting rifles.

Beretta also owns Benelli, Franchi, Sako, Stoeger, Tikka, Uberti, Burris Optics and a 20% stake in Browning.

History and takeover by Umarex

Walther had its beginnings in the 19th century, in the then town of Zella St. Blasii (Thuringia), as a “gunsmith’s workshop”.

The roots can be traced back to the 18th century, through the reigns of kings and emperors, two world wars, the complete dissolution of the company in Zella-Mehlis and the re-establishment of the same in Ulm, all in line with the period of economic renewal of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The early 1990s, prompted the company Walther to merge with the Umarex Group. The quality has remained the same ever since.

History since 1949: H&K stands for quality

Heckler & Koch was founded in 1949 by Alex Seidel, Edmund Heckler and Theodor Koch. The company was founded in the old Mauser weapons factory in Oberndorf. In the course of the build-up of the German Wehrmacht in the early 1950s, the company received an order to manufacture the G3 automatic army rifle in .308 Winchester caliber.

H&K was one of the first gun manufacturers to use a polygonal barrel profile. This type of barrel has no grooves and lands, but a polygonal interior that ensures a certain rotation of the bullet. Many of H&K’s innovations from the field of military weapons have found their way into sporting and hunting rifles.

In addition to the ubiquitous MP5 submachine gun, H&K also developed a small line of specialty rifles for sniping. The HK VP-70 from the 1970s predated Gaston Glock’s famous Glock 17 by more than a decade. In the mid-1980s, H&K developed a special caseless army rifle, the G11.

Hard times and regeneration

After losing several government contracts, financial worries began to plague H&K. A particularly hard blow was that the US armed forces chose the Beretta M9 over the P7M13 for the sidearm issued. The G11 project also hit a wall as interest waned.

In March 1991 H&K was bought by the British Royal Ordnance. In 1995 the company was taken over by the German Wischo Group.

The USP pistol that H&K had developed around this time began to attract interest. The United States Special Operations Command chose the MK23 SOCOM pistol as their special operations pistol.

In 1997, H&K introduced a new rifle design called the G36 in the form of an assault rifle, light machine pistol and carbine. Unlike the G3 design, which had been H&K’s bread and butter, the G36 eschews the roller locking system in favor of a rotary locking system.

Funds as an investment are particularly suitable for investors who do not want to deal with the news on a daily basis. The success of individual shares depends heavily on day-to-day business. So-called funds combine various securities into a bundled investment portfolio. Shares are generally regarded as risky and speculative. But there are also differences in trading securities. For example, active investors with individual securities and cautious investors (passive) who focus on ETF (index funds such as DAX, NASDAQ & Co.). Today we take a look at the topic of funds as an investment. We highlight advantages, disadvantages and risks, but also take a look at the types of traders and facts and figures about equity funds. You have capital to play with? Then check out our article on stocks here as well. Now we start with funds, the definition, their advantages and disadvantages?

Back to the Capital Investment editorial.

Equity funds: advantages, disadvantages and risk

If you want to play it safe, you should invest in funds. Before buying, however, there are many questions to be answered.

What is an ETF simply explained?

What kind of funds are there?

What are transaction costs for funds?

What are the ongoing charges with a fund?

How stable is the performance?

What are the costs of an ETF savings plan?

What are the best ETFs? – more on this at the end, with the top 3 funds

Facts about funds

The most important 3 facts about funds as an investment:

Binding term (earlier exit associated with losses)

Minimized risk through bundled individual stocks

Purchase fees must be taken into account in the volume

For those who can put money aside, funds are an excellent alternative to individual stocks. Bundled funds are less sensitive because they contain many players that are more stable in the aggregate. The returns are accordingly more moderate than with shares, but as you can quickly see in our best practice of dividends, the investment is worthwhile. In the last 15 years alone, dividends have tripled, from 2004 to 2019, which is 15 years, brought an additional payout of 27.8 billion euros annually. An increase of 271.15% on the comparable year.

What is an ETF simply explained?

ETFs are pooled stocks, so risk (default, profit and loss spikes) goes down. The nuts and bolts of the trade-off. ETFs are associated with fixed maturities.

Maturity of ETF securities

If you are familiar with the classic account model, you can compare shares and funds with overnight money and fixed-term deposits. Call money is always available, there is no capital commitment. If you have opted for a time deposit model, your money is parked with a certain term. During this time you have no access to your capital. If you need it prematurely, you will incur losses.

So here you are weighing up, is it money that you may need or can you put your capital aside and tie it up for a period of time.

Let’s start with our usual assessment: advantages, disadvantages and risks of trading with funds.

Funds at a glance

Funds can be set up just like shares at any bank. Different investment portfolios are possible and so a corresponding gradation is possible according to the risk appetite of the individual investor. Of course, everyone knows the tax advantages that are possible with capital transactions. Due to the large selection of fund products, you can spread the risk well.

Each purchase and fund management costs fees. Your capital is tied up for the long term, and liquidation is only possible at a loss before the end of the term.

The current return of funds is medium (compared to the investment alternatives) and the risk of funds is absolutely manageable.

Advantages

Simple deposit facility with banks

Adaptation to your own risk appetite: different portfolio types are possible

Tax benefits

Disadvantages

Long-term capital commitment

Dissolution only possible with loss

Buy funds? Definitions and tips

Before buying your first securities, you should check which type of investment you are. Basically, you have two options.

Passive investor (ETF, index fund)

Active investor (share)

Passive (ETF) or active investor (stock)?

Both forms offer advantages. Trading individual stocks provides for higher price breakouts, thus potentially more profit (and loss). The risk increases. If you want to trade more cautiously, you can buy index funds (ETFs).

Passive investor

The word ETF portfolio stands for “Exchange Traded Fund” and is an exchange-traded index fund. This index fund tracks the performance of an index, such as the DAX in Germany or the NASDAQ in the USA. But these are only the best known representatives. As you will see in the list of the best, biggest and cheapest funds.

New York Stock Exchange

At their core, ETFs combine the advantages of stocks and funds into one product, so you can invest money directly in entire markets through ETFs. A real advantage.

Active investor

In contrast to funds with manageable risk, you can also act as an active investor in trading. As an active investor, you invest in individual stocks. This costs time, because it is about analyzing individual companies to determine which paper you want to buy.

As an active investor, you will be affected more quickly by price fluctuations. Even one piece of bad news in the morning about a single company can greatly minimize your capital if you don’t diversify.

How much does it cost to buy ETFs?

If you are interested in buying an ETF, you will find many different pricing models on the internet. Here, the individual prices per trade depend on the online broker. The standard fees are usually five to eight, maximum ten euros. In addition, there is a fee of 0.25% depending on the trade amount. The fee per purchase is typically limited to an upper maximum amount.

If you are online a lot, you will quickly find alternatives. For example, flat-fee offers from various established discount brokers such as onvista are attractive.

Equally interesting are promotional offers, where at certain times the volume-dependent fee or the entire fee is waived completely.

Fees and costs for ETF purchase summarized:

Purchase fee of 5 – 8 Euro, maximum 10 Euro

Trading amount mostly 0.25 % of purchase

Tip. Flat-free offer like at onvista

Your first ETF purchase: invest a lot or a little?

Another unbeatable advantage of fund trading is that you can start with small investment amounts. While you have to present 10% – 20% equity capital to the bank when investing in real estate, which can quickly be 50,000 – 100,000 euros in major cities such as Hamburg, Berlin, Munich and Cologne. The entry into equity funds is often profitable with only 10% of the buzzer, about 5,000 – 10,000 euros per package.

Order quantity and purchase fee

Why shouldn’t you buy smaller packages? There is an order fee for every trade. If you buy a package for 100 euros, many banks directly 5-8 euros order fee. Accordingly, your portfolio shrinks directly to 92-95 euros in value. This means that you have already made the first 5-8 euros loss, which must first be compensated for by a corresponding increase in the price of the fund. This means a 5% – 8% loss in value directly at the time of purchase.

Purchase of 100 Euro Ø 6.5% loss
plus 0.25% trading fee

If you buy a package of 1,000 euros, the trading fee of our exemplary 5-8 euros is much less important. With a purchase of 1,000 euros, you retain 992-995 euros in value. Accordingly, the loss in value is reduced to only 0.5% – 0.8%.

Purchase of 1.000 Euro Ø 0.65% loss
plus 0.25% trading fee

With a package of 10,000 euros and an order fee of 5-8 euros, the loss in value is directly reduced to 0.05% – 0.08%.

Purchase of 10.000 Euro Ø 0.07% loss
plus 0.25% trading fee

That’s why it’s worth buying larger packages directly.

In addition, there is the aforementioned purchase fee of approximately 0.25% of the traded package.

Of course, the management fee for your portfolio is just as favourable. The more value you hold, the smaller the effect on your portfolio.
