Choosing the best roof tent depends on your individual needs and preferences. Here are some important factors we’ve looked at that can help you choose the right rooftop tent for you. Remember that the ‘best’ rooftop tent can vary from person to person, depending on your individual needs and preferences. It’s important to research carefully and compare different options before making a decision.

Comfort: Suitable size, assembly & weather resistance

First of all, make sure that the roof tent offers enough space for the number of people who will be sleeping in it. There are single, double and family tents in various sizes. Check whether the mounting system of the roof tent is suitable for your vehicle type. There are tents that are mounted on roof racks, roof racks or special roof rack systems. The roof tent should be robust enough to withstand various weather conditions. Make sure it is waterproof and well ventilated to minimize condensation.

Clever purchasing decisions: Structure, material & service

Easy and quick assembly and disassembly is important, especially if you want to change locations often. Consider the comfort of the tent, including mattress quality, ventilation and interior design. Pay attention to the weight of the tent, as it can affect vehicle stability and fuel consumption. High quality materials should be durable. Some roof tents have additional features such as integrated ladders, pockets, mosquito nets and windows.

The budget plays an important role. Find a rooftop tent that meets your requirements without blowing your reserves. Research different brands and models, read product reviews and ask other outdoor enthusiasts about their experiences. Pay attention to the manufacturer’s warranty terms and customer service in case of problems.

Checklist: All the criteria to tick off

Discover the Attersee: These activities you must have done!

When you spend your camping vacation at Attersee, you can look forward to a few relaxing days in the mountains! Hiking tours to viewpoints and waterfalls, swimming beaches and water sports await you. But also great other activities like a visit to an alpaca pasture, via ferrata and a high ropes course are waiting to be discovered by you! Special highlight: A tour with the transparent canoe to discover the underwater world!

These are the must-do activities at Attersee:

Relaxation and swimming at the lake

Water sports like stand-up paddling or water skiing

Hike to the mermaid fall

Trip to the alpaca farm

Via ferrata climbing

Visit to the high ropes course

Discover the underwater world by transparent canoe or diving

Mermaid fall: hike to the waterfall

You’ve arrived at Attersee, found your campsite and pitched your roof tent. Now you want to take it easy for the first day and discover the surroundings through an easy hike? Then a hike for the Nixenfall is a good idea to arrive first. From Fachbergbrücke in the village of Weißenbach am Attersee you can take a moderate hike of about 60 minutes up to the Nixenfall. The 50 meter high waterfall is an impressive natural event and worth a visit in any weather. The hike is also particularly suitable for families, as the ascent is not particularly steep. It is best to combine the hike with a detour to one of the many small alpine pastures and restaurants for a little refreshment before or after the hike.

Beautiful hike

Duration: 60 min

Route 50 km

Attersee: enjoy beach & water sports

At Attersee there are many public bathing places where you can swim in the beautiful, pleasantly warm and turquoise blue water of the Attersee and relax on the beach. Also lie on the sunbathing lawn and enjoy the sun. There are various beaches, beaches especially for families with small children but also dog beaches, where you can bring your four-legged friend. Action fans will also get their money’s worth here: why not try out stand-up paddling, the absolute trend sport among water sports! Paddle standing on a surfboard over the Attersee to enjoy nature and at the same time work on your fitness.

Swimming on the beach

Stand Up Paddling

Attersee via ferrata Mahdlgupf: climbing in nature

The via ferrata directly at the Attersee is for experienced climbers a great opportunity to make a challenging climbing tour with a fantastic view. The tour is steep and demanding and therefore only suitable for experienced climbers and not for beginners. The via ferrata is varied and consists in between again and again of steep downswings and the rope anchorages are partly far apart, which makes the via ferrata partly strenuous and particularly challenging. You have partly an overwhelming view over the Attersee. The entire tour takes 5.5 hours and you overcome 800 meters during the tour.

Via ferrata for advanced climbers

Duration: 5,5 hour

Altitude meters: 800 meters

Discover the underwater world: see through canoe & diving

You want to discover the underwater world of the Attersee? With the transparent canoe you can discover the Attersee in a very special way: While sailing across the lake, you can simultaneously observe the underwater world through your kayak. To experience the unique world of the depths of Lake Attersee, you can also take a diving course and thus be right up close.

High Ropes Course Attersee: High up in front of a dreamlike scenery!

A trip to the high ropes course Attersee means a day full of fun in airy heights. Experience the exciting and varied via ferrata either alone or with an experienced trainer. While you are climbing you have a breathtaking view of the Attersee. The high ropes course is also highly recommended for families with children, children from the age of 8 can climb here accompanied by their parents, Good to know: For a day in the high ropes course you must definitely book online in advance, this is very easy via an online form.

Hike to the Schoberstein: View over the entire Attersee!

If you want to look over the whole Attersee, a hike to the Schoberstein is worth it, because here you have the best view over the Attersee! The hike starts at the parking lot at the bridge to the Nixenfall near Weißenbach am Attersee and the climb to the Schoberstein takes about one and a half hours. The hike is leisurely, but climbs throughout, it goes through stony path and largely through the forest. Since the route is partly steep and at the top is also walked over rock, the route is rather unsuitable for small children, but doable with older children. Since a large part of the trail leads through the forest, the hike is also suitable for particularly sunny days.

Hike to the Schoberstein

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Comfortable, but with slope

Alpaca Lake: A day with alpacas!

At Hof See Alpaka you can expect a beautiful day with the fluffy alpacas: You can pet the super cute animals, watch them grazing in the meadow but also participate in one of the offered walking tours and hike together with the alpacas through the beautiful surroundings around Lake Attersee. Fun for young and old and especially for children a day with alpacas is a wonderful experience! But also for a vacation for two, a romantic alpaca walk is a perfect idea for a relaxing vacation day.

Camping vacation in winter: Skiing & winter walks

The area around the Attersee turns into an absolute snow paradise in winter: Snowy hiking trails that invite you to beautiful winter walks in the middle of the snow. Near Lake Attersee there are three ski resorts, all relatively small but with beautiful and varied slopes waiting for you. The ski resorts are all suitable for children, so you can have fun skiing and snowboarding with the whole family! Also two winter toboggan runs once at the Födinger Alm and once the toboggan run Steinbach am Attersee are waiting for you.

Day trip to the Dachstein: excursion to the ice worlds

An excursion to the Dachstein, the highest mountain in Styria, is particularly worthwhile during a vacation at Attersee: At the Dachstein there is much to discover such as the ice worlds that are absolutely unique or the staircase to nowhere, from which you have a breathtaking view, but beware not for the faint of heart! Of course, you also have to walk over the famous suspension bridge during your visit to the Dachstein.

Winter vacation at the North Sea – The German North Sea coast is an exciting vacation destination all year round. Where holidaymakers relax in a beach chair and enjoy the sun in the summer, in the winter you’ll see weather-beaten walkers letting the rough wind blow in their faces. It’s crucial to wear the right clothes to stay warm and dry in the cool breeze and rain. The optimal weatherproof clothing is often not easy to find. We have summarized the biggest must-haves and essentials for you here! Read here everything about weatherproof clothing for your next winter vacation at the North Sea.

Winter vacation at the North Sea

The North Sea is known for its balanced climate and windy storms. Both in summer and winter, people are drawn here to the idyllic landscape of the Wadden Sea. As the name suggests, the North Sea is located at the uppermost tip of Germany and has a lot to offer with its numerous islands. Whether as a family with children, as a couple or alone to relax – the North Sea is always a great place to travel.

Here is a brief overview of the North Sea:

Here is a glimpse of the beach to take a long, extended walk:

The be-all and end-all: a suitable headgear

Through the unprotected head, you lose a lot of heat in the winter. Once the head and especially the ears have been exposed to the cold for some time, it is difficult to get warm again. In addition to the outside temperature, wind and rain or snow also play a major role. Especially on the stormy North Sea coast, the right headgear is therefore crucial in winter for your well-being during long walks. On the beach or on the dike, you are completely at the mercy of the weather. A thick wool hat that also covers the ears and forehead is the best choice, especially in strong winds. Those who like it a little more elegant are also well served with a hat.

A wide selection of different hats can also be found online, such as at Hutshopping. Hats made of weather-resistant materials are particularly suitable for winter. Felt, wool or leather have wind- and water-repellent properties and keep the wearer’s head warm and dry.

What is particularly suitable headgear for the stormy climate?

Woolen cap

Hat from felt, wool or leather

Hood

Hats for a warm head: the right size

Those who do not have much experience with buying hats should determine their exact hat size before ordering. This is especially important so that the hat fits well, does not constrict and does not fly off at the first gust of wind. The hat size is determined by the circumference of the head. This is best measured with a tape measure in front of the mirror. The tape measure is placed around the middle of the back of the head, about one centimeter above the ears and down to the forehead. A circumference of 52 centimeters corresponds approximately to the worldwide valid size XS, a circumference of 61 centimeters is already an XL.

Here in a nutshell the instructions on how to measure for the perfect fit of the hat:

Hat size results from head circumference

Measure with tape measure

Measuring tape is placed around the middle of the back of the head

Continue with a cm above the ears to the forehead

Also as video: How to measure

Here again a detailed guide on how to take your head circumference correctly.

Weatherproof clothing – nice alternatives to Frisian mink and rubber boots

Anyone who thinks of weatherproof clothing only in terms of bulky yellow rain jackets and rubber boots is mistaken. Water- and wind-repellent jackets and coats are now also available in elegant, modern designs. Different patterns, colors and materials ensure that even in winter you don’t have to wear the same look on the coast. Also rubber boots are not only available in green and blue. Even models with heels are available on the market. Of course, you can also walk on the beach with other waterproof winter boots, but the advantage of rubber boots is that they are not only waterproof, but also very easy to clean.

The packing list for the winter is of course somewhat different from the well-known summer packing list for the North Sea vacation. However, some elements can be safely adopted. While the sand toys can stay at home, you should still pack the swimwear. Even if swimming in the sea in winter is only for the hardy, the spas and indoor pools are a great way to warm up after a long walk.

What is a must for the winter vacation?

Rain jackets

Lined jackets

Rubber boots

Headgear like hat or cap

Welcome to Marbella, the Miami of Europe.

Marbella: city, location and weather on the Costa del Sol

If you ask me about Marbella, there is only one sensible answer:

Marbella is the Miami of Europe!

A pleasant climate all year round, lots of sun, right on the Mediterranean Sea and all this just a few hours away by plane, from European capitals such as Berlin, Stockholm but also Rome. In fact, many Italians are also here in Marbella, as well as Swedes and Germans. One reason for this are, for example, the countless, large and lush green golf courses. As well as the “Old-Town” of Marbella, the kilometer-long beaches and the Spanish attitude towards life. What this means, you will learn in this Marbella guide for your first vacation.

Listen along with Zoe:

Location: South-Southeast Spain, almost at Gibraltar

Marbella is located in Spain, more precisely on the southeastern coast, just before the southernmost point of Europe.

Before starting, a piece of Marbella, from above!

Drive from the airport: In 40 minutes at the marina

Marbella itself, like the other coastal cities (Malaga, Mijas), stretches along the beach and coast. When driving from the airport of Malaga to Marbella, one hardly notices the transitions between the cities and districts.

Malaga, Mijos, Marbella: Route

The way from the airport to the center of Marbella takes about 40, 45 minutes by car.

Expressway, speed limit and coast

On the expressway you are allowed to drive a maximum of 120 km / h. In fact, you often even drive up slowly, because the road runs directly along the coast. The view is captivating, especially if you are coming from the northern regions of Europe.

As you drive, on your right are the residential areas and behind them the mountains. More precisely, the Sierra Blanca. The mountain range runs along the coast, through Istán, Ojén, Marbella and Monda. One mountain in particular stands out later in Marbella, the 1,215 meter high Mushel peak.

In Marbella they say that the mountain stops the heat from inland, also the clouds! Therefore, the good climate, the many sun, but more about that later in the section “Climate and Weather” in Marbella.

So to the right you have the mountains and to the left, the Mediterranean Sea is constantly visible. With good visibility, you can even see the African coast from here. Even Gibraltar (the southernmost tip of Europe, only a few kilometers to Africa) is only 30 minutes away by car.

So Marbella is different from the typical, European city. It is not centrally located, but typical of coastal cities, it stretches along the sea. Accordingly, one is also more likely to travel by car than by bicycle or on foot.

Along the entire route from the airport to Marbella, you pass a lot of greenery through palm trees, you see golf courses and settlements, with vacation homes and villas. Everything in the typical Spanish look. Here are mainly the properties that are used by the owners for their own vacations and when the occupants are not on site, the vacation homes and villas are rented to tourists. The further you get into Marbella, the more exclusive the neighborhoods become, especially when looking towards the mountains.

So many spend their autumn and winter time in Marbella. Then, when it is cold and wet in the rest of Europe! Why? In Marbella is always pleasant climate.

Climate: weather and temperatures in Marbella

Temperatures – Due to the southern location with sea air and warmth from inland, a warm, not hot, climate has been established here. In this location palm trees grow and the oranges on the trees are ready to be picked in December. In fact in December!

Pure Mediterranean climate.

All this, in Europe.

Plants and fruits: green all year

Here too, Marbella is very reminiscent of Miami, palm trees grow 20 meters, 30 meters in height. Orange harvest in December, palm trees and fruit all year round, that’s what everyone dreams of when they think of vacation and relaxation.

During the day, the city is relatively protected by the high mountains from the more extreme heat inland.

Houses in the ground – Only 30, 40 km further in the mainland, for example, there is a region where houses are traditionally built in the ground! From above you see as only a small door, the rest of the apartment is under the ground and is thus always cooled. As I said, in Marbella such extreme heat, e.g. over 35, 36 degrees are rather rare.

Because, at the same time from the sea blows a cool breeze, especially in the evening, so that even after hot days, in the evening is not uncomfortably hot. The Mediterranean Sea provides balance.

Clear starry sky through mountain and sea air

At the same time, the protection of the mountains ensures that few clouds pass over Marbella, even at night. Marbella is not a big city, like Berlin, Hamburg, Munich or other European cities like Paris and London. The starry sky over the sea spark so, as in few places in Europe.

Seawater desalination and irrigation – clouds, rain, all this is very rare in Marbella. If you wonder why there is so much greenery, most of the land is irrigated, permanently. Marbella and Spain as a whole, are among the most successful countries when it comes to seawater desalination. So they can create a lot of green despite the warm temperatures, a lot of sun. Hence the almost unique golf courses in the region, with almost always good weather.

The moment between sunset and starry sky:

Weather in Marbella: Today + temperatures

Here’s a quick look at the current weather in Marbella:

Marbella City: Old Town, Villas & Starbucks

Marbella’s downtown consists of many small neighborhoods. However, the city itself feels larger than it actually is, due to the stretching along the coast.

Downtown and Old-Town

Old-Town of Marbella – One of the most important places is probably Marbella’s “Old-Town”. The name says it all, this is how you imagine the old town in Spain. Many small restaurants, small boutiques, small squares, orange trees and also small highlights, e.g. a wall with hundreds of blue flower pots (ideal for Instagram). Here in the old town you can find the real Marbella. Later in the tips, we also recommend a restaurant where every evening an opera surprises you.

During the day you will find relatively few people in the city center, due to the high temperatures, especially in the summer months! After all, hardly a breeze blows in the alleys of the city center. But in the evening, Marbella’s old town feels fast!

The “big meal” here doesn’t start at 6 or 7 pm. You start with a few drinks around 8 p.m., 9 p.m., then come tapas and only late in the evening, around 10 p.m., 11 p.m. or even 24 p.m., comes the actual dinner, the big main course.

Shopping: shopping and tips

Puerto Banús – Another important spot, especially for the first visit, is Puerto Banús. In Puerto Banús you will find the big yachts, sailing ships and also very many shopping opportunities. However, it is not cheap here, because it is mainly Gucci, Louis Vuitton or luxury brands the Hermés.

Rating on Google: 4.4 / 5.0 with 1,660 reviews

To the left and right of the port of Puerto Banús, stretch the beaches, as well as large hotels. In addition, there are beach bars and many other ways to spend time here.

Golden Mile: Villas neighborhood in the center

Only a few minutes by car and you are at the Golden Mile. The Golden Mile is the most exclusive area, at least in the downtown area of Marbella. Here are large, stately villas. Accordingly, many streets are closed off by barriers.

The Golden Mile is above the main road (yellow on the map) and covers a wide area. The higher you go into the mountains, the larger the villas and estates become.

Away from that, there is everything you need. From everyday groceries and markets like Lidl and Aldi, to small stores in the streets, to large shopping centers with Starbucks and Wendy’s, so even American stores that you can’t find in the city. This is what makes Marbella special. With only 141,500 inhabitants. You can find everything here, as well as Gucci, Louis Vuitton & Co. in Puerto Banús.

Beach and shopping in Marbella

Vacation in Marbella means for many above all: relaxing, visiting the beach and finally time for shopping!

Beaches in Marbella: Almost 100% sand

If you spend your vacation in Marbella, you are lucky, because here is almost exclusively sand to find! Directly on the Mediterranean Sea, not far from Gibraltar, the southernmost tip of Europe, you can have pure beach feeling. From the entire journey via Malaga and Mijas, in Marbella and to the next town is Estepona.

That means where you go to the beach doesn’t really matter! You can find beautiful sand everywhere.

When it comes to space, you might want to look for a beach outside the city center. Because of course most of the tourists are here and of course also the locals. That’s why many very good adresses, like Nikki Beach, are not centrally located in the city, but a few kilometers outside the big tourist crowds.

Toplist: Best beaches in Marbella

What does the community on Google say? Thousands have left reviews, these are the best beaches:

Playa del Alicate

Playa Nagüeles

Playa de Artola

… and many more!

Shopping:

Believe me, you have so many possibilities to go shopping in Marbella! From big shopping malls, where you can also find many international stores, from Starbucks to Wendy’s, to many, small shopping streets and of course many, small boutiques in the “Old-Town”.

If you want an exclusive shopping experience then you have to go to Puerto Banús, here you will find luxury brands from all over the world, from Louis Vuitton to Burberry and Hermès. My first stop was at Louis Vuitton, in fact we even walked out with a pair of shoes. Why not! Fitting for our almost daily visits, to great beach clubs, here locally. Always at yes you can enjoy the good life.

Here you will find the Louis Vuitton store and many other luxury brands:

Villas and vacation homes: real estate

In Marbella there are pretty much all forms of real estate. So to speak, from the rental apartment, to the exclusive designer villas in the mountainsides.

Villas: Golden Mile

If you can afford it, you can live and reside very exclusively in Marbella! On the one hand, there is the “Golden Mile”, or the entire area from the golden mile up to the mountain slopes. Here you can find villa after villa. The higher up in the mountains, the more exclusive the location. Even more exclusive than in the Golden Mile, it becomes a little further inland. Here there are small settlements where the super rich live. Again, they live somewhat secluded, so they are not directly accessible to everyone from the city. In addition to seclusion, of course, security also plays a big role for these real estate buyers.

If you want to see the expensive villas in Marbella, drive along the coastal road, in Marbella it becomes the main road and orient yourself towards the mountains. You can start for example in the “Golden Mile”. But it is important that you cannot explore the area on foot.

Tip: It’s best to organize a good, high-quality car. After all, you will have to pass through some barriers where you don’t want to attract attention. You can find the map and location above, in the “City” section.

Cottage: beach location

In Marbella, however, you can also find many vacation homes, especially on the beach locations, left and right of the city. As already described in the introduction, Marbella stretches over the entire coastal area and accordingly the settlements are also extensive, with small and large vacation homes.

Often they are owned by owners who rent them out as vacation homes for many months. So you can enjoy the luxury of Marbella itself, for example, in the cold autumn and winter months in Europe. In the spring and summer, the vacation homes are then rented out to tourists.

A good deal! Because, as a rule, you pay 20% commission to the local managers. So if the house costs 1,000 euros per month, whether rent or repayment of the loan, but per month 3,000 euros can be collected (minus 20%, 600 euros) remain after rent or repayment of the loan still 1,400 euros per month!

Golf courses in Marbella are very popular! Therefore, the business is booming and meanwhile more and more properties, directly at golf courses are designed. Therefore very popular, also very special, the various properties that are built directly on or around golf courses!

The big advantage for all golf fans, the golf club is only a few minutes walk away. E.g. directly through your own garden, past your own swimming pool. Already you are at the 1st hole. Very practical, for all those who practice golf as a hobby and sport. The membership is included in these properties, so you can play directly.

Golf in Marbella: Number 1 in Europe

In addition to the city and the beaches, or of course, in addition to Mediterranean climate, but above all had one thing to offer, golf courses! Therefore, the designation, Miami of Europe, is also so appropriate.

Tip: Los Naranjos Golf Club

A good tip for golfers is for example the “Los Naranjos” golf course. “Naranjo” is the Spanish word for “orange tree”, “Naranja” means “orange”. The golf course is called this way because there are extremely many orange trees in this area. The golf course is managed by Swedes. There are a lot of them in Marbella! Besides the wide lush green, you will also find a great culinary offer, with international cuisine. Los Naranjos is definitely worth a visit, not only for golf, but also for delicious food.

Restaurants and Beach Clubs: Good life

Here are 3 more tips: 2 beach clubs and 1 distinctive restaurant in the old town of Marbella!

Why 2 Beach Clubs? If you want to enjoy the good life in Marbella, you have to go to beach clubs or restaurants. On the one hand you meet your friends here to let the day end, on the other hand you can decide for yourself whether delicious food, another jump into the sea or directly into the pool. Relax on a lounger with cocktails and snacks.

Only 10 minutes from Old-Town, in the middle of the beach:

Nikki Beach: Las Chapas

Nikki Beach Club – Away from the big tourist crowds of the city center, you’ll find Nikki Beach Club, in Las Chapas (Marbella). Right on the beach, extremely cozy and with fantastic and stylish food. Stylish? Yes! The sushi alone, but read more here! Our tip for those who want beach club, extremely tasty food and drinks.

You’re right downtown? Then you should check out this beach club:

Ocean Club: In the City

Beach Club XL – Right in the center of the city, in the middle of the hotels and shopping streets, is the Ocean Club, directly on the beach! Best location, everything kept in white, an XXL pool, live DJ, dancers… more does not go. The reviews on the Internet are top, almost 5 out of 5 stars gives the community on Google. Reason enough for a visit, in one of the recommendations for Marbella, the Ocean Club.

Insider tip: Juan! Restaurant with spontaneous opera

Here is an absolute insider tip, which I really only know through good friends! In the middle of the city center (Old-Town), you will find Juan’s Restaurant. Every evening, absolutely surprising, under palm trees, in the courtyard of the restaurant, something comes with the no one expects while eating: An opera! Sung by a real, married couple who work in the kitchen and in the service, respectively. Both are trained opera singers and when Juan heard about it, he found it so charming that unless there is a small live performance every evening.

Not in fine pinstripes, suns in the typical clothing of the kitchen and service. The performance goes from 10 to 15 minutes each and includes two to three songs, with a special charm, in the night of the Marbella.

On Sylt there are some beautiful places and communities where you can spend your holidays or buy a property. Westerland is considered the center of the island. In this place you will find a wide range of leisure activities for the day or night. The club scene is also very pronounced here. The municipality of List is considered the northernmost town in Germany with some beautiful beaches and dune landscapes. Here you can surf, swim and play with your dog on the beach. The town of Kampen is considered an absolute celebrity hotspot. In this small community you can meet the elite at the most exclusive and luxurious parties and events. “See and be seen” is the motto here.

Westerland: Centre of the island

Westerland is considered the center of the island of Sylt, as you can experience a lot here during the day and at night. The municipality has its own airport and train station. Especially for teenagers and young adults there is a wide range of leisure activities such as water sports, events, restaurants, bars, shops and an 8 km long sandy beach. In Westerland there are also many clubs where you can party until late at night. Especially the Sandstraße and de Paulstraße are known for a wide range of bars and pubs. Here you will meet a colourful and lively society. For holidays with children, the place offers a leisure pool or an aquarium.

List: many beaches and a great offer

The municipality of List is located in the very north of the island of Sylt and offers a beautiful landscape with dunes and beaches. If you are looking for a relaxing holiday, you should definitely take a look at this place. Here you will find two lighthouses, a harbour and several restaurants directly on the coast. List offers perfect beaches for surfers, nudists, dog owners or shallow water for children. The offer for leisure and recreational activities is very diverse in this place.

Kampen: Hotspot of the elite

The small village of Kampen, with just 700 inhabitants, is located north of Westerland and is surrounded on both sides by the sea. The place has established itself especially in recent years as a celebrity hot spot and popular holiday resort of German tourists. Here you can find, especially in the high season, the elite and high-ranking society. At the exclusive parties the motto is: see and be seen. Besides the society, Kampen also offers a beautiful and picturesque nature with white sandy beaches and the legendary red cliff.

Insider tip: Sylt in winter and the elbow

You want to get out of the mass tourism and enjoy the island with its beauty and nature alone? Then we have two absolute insider tips to get a little closer to this goal. Sylt is very well known and especially in the summer months there are many crowds of people on the popular island. To escape this hustle and bustle, our first insider tip is the nature reserve Ellenbogen. This is located at the northernmost tip and promises peace, solitude and above all relaxation. Here you can come down and enjoy the time for yourself. Another insider tip is to travel in winter. This is rather unusual for a holiday by the sea, but in the winter months you can avoid the high prices and enjoy beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

Sylt in winter: few tourists and a beautiful sky

You read that right. Although the island is dominated by summer tourism and especially popular with the affluent society, this fact comes in handy during a trip in winter. For one, there are the lower prices. The island is known for high accommodation or restaurant prices, but this is usually only true in summer. If you plan to come to Sylt in winter, there will be no crowds and you can enjoy the beauty and nature in peace. Also the prices in accommodations and restaurants will be smaller due to the decreasing demand. And now the absolute insider tip! The winter sky over Sylt is breathtaking and beautiful. You can enjoy fantastic sunrises and sunsets and never forget this sight.

Elbow: rest and relaxation away from the crowds

The nature reserve Ellenbogen is the northernmost point of the island and an absolute must when you make a holiday on Sylt. Here you can relax, let your soul dangle alone and forget the stress of everyday life. Walk on the beach, in the dunes or make yourself comfortable in the sand. Enjoy the cold sea air and the solitude. Here you can escape the hustle and bustle and concentrate on yourself. From this point you can see as far as Denmark and, with a bit of luck, a few seals will visit you on your walk. So if you are on Sylt, a visit to the elbow is highly recommended and a real insider tip.

Beaches: Where are the most beautiful beaches?

The range of beaches on Sylt is very high. Depending on your needs and wishes, you can find your ideal beach and enjoy the day in the sun. In addition to some beaches for dogs or nudists, the island offers many opportunities for families with children and water sports or recreational activities. On the beach in Hörnum, for example, you can relax perfectly and let your soul dangle in a beach chair. Here the water is shallow and calm and you have the ideal opportunities to learn a water sport. If you prefer more action and a wider range of leisure activities, we would recommend the main beach of Westerland. Here you will find many restaurants, bars and a more extensive range of water sports.

Hörnum Oststrand: Shallow water and fewer tourists

Hörnum beach is located in the south of the island of Sylt and attracts many families with children every year during the summer months. The promenade is surrounded by many small restaurants and bars and there is a lighthouse and a harbour in the area. The beach offers white sand and very calm waters, which makes this part of the island ideal for learning how to windsurf and sail. Children and beginners can visit the sailing and surfing school and learn on the shallow water. Dogs are also welcome here! Hörnum’s eastern beach is considered very clean and the water quality is also good. In July and August, the occupancy rate is at its highest.

Just make yourself a picture of the beach in Hörnum and explore the beautiful surroundings before your visit!

Holiday with children and dog – is that possible?

Holiday on Sylt with children and dog? Yes, that is possible. For both children and dog owners, the German island offers several attractions and areas to spend a great holiday. Our tip for a holiday with the dog is: avoid crowded beaches and go for a walk in the morning hours. You can’t go wrong with this in any case and you won’t disturb any other tourists. There are also some local activities for children, such as a mudflat hike or a tour in the Sagen forest. Here you learn a lot about the past of the island and the special natural events in a playful way. So there is something for the whole family.

Sylt with dog: dog beaches and pet-friendly accommodation

Of course you don’t have to leave your dog at home during your holiday on Sylt. On the contrary. On Sylt there are many offers and areas where you can ideally spend your holiday together with a dog. We recommend that you avoid the overcrowded beaches in the summer and prefer to go to quieter areas. Beaches on the tidal flats are usually less frequented by tourists and especially in the early morning hours you can watch the sunrise during a walk. Also the hotels and accommodations are in many cases very dog-friendly. If you inform yourself in advance, nothing should go wrong. However, keep in mind during your visit that your dog must be kept on a leash in nature reserves and that you should always be considerate of your fellow human beings.

Sylt with children: Mudflat hike, indoor swimming pool or Sagen forest

There are also many attractions for children on the island and you can make an ideal family trip here. The highlight is of course a mudflat walk, for which the island is ideal. There are walks for children and families so you can learn about the process. Another attraction is the Legend Forest of Sylt. Here you can playfully learn about the various legends of Sylt on a path about 200 metres long and find shade from the sun under the numerous trees. Should the weather not play along and an activity in nature not be possible, the Sylt wave is ideal as a substitute program.

Weather & Climate on Sylt: Temperatures and Precipitation

It doesn’t matter if it’s winter or summer. If you want to go on holiday, the weather should play along and fit into your plans. For example, if you are currently considering whether you should spontaneously start a short trip to Sylt, a look at the weather map would be advisable. You don’t want to pay money for accommodation and the journey, only to be unable to spend a day at the beach because it’s raining cats and dogs. We show you here the temperatures and the average precipitation of the important months, so that you can prepare yourself ideally.

High season temperature: June to September

June to September is when the island’s temperatures are at their highest. You can expect about 20°C and 7 hours of sunshine in August. In addition, the water temperature in this month is a pleasant 17 ° C. In June there are with 9 hours of sunshine per day the most sun in the whole year at about 18°C. The water temperature is only 13°C, so swimming in the sea might be a little too cold for some. During these summer months, you should expect an average of 9-12 rainy days per month. However, it is worth mentioning that there are very rarely complete rainy days on Sylt and the weather can change constantly throughout the day.

Low season temperature: October to May

As you have already experienced, it is an absolute insider tip to visit the beautiful island in winter. This is also true for months in autumn and spring. From October, the temperatures drop to about 12 ° C to -1 ° C in February. Also the sunshine hours become less and less and amount to only 2 hours per day in the months from November to January. You should also keep in mind that there might be more rainy days during your trip in winter. The most are on average in November with 14 days. Swimming can also be very fresh. If the water is still 13°C in October, the average water temperature is only 3°C in February. So this is not for everyone.

Most beautiful beach resorts: holidays with children and dog

Of course, one of the main reasons that drives so many to Rügen every season are the wide, soft sandy beaches that stretch along the entire coast. To keep an overview or even to choose a favorite is almost impossible. Therefore, we have compiled a small list of the most beautiful, quietest, longest and most diverse beaches on Rügen for you.

Schaprode: Coveted real estate on the sandy beach

One of the oldest settlements on Rügen is Schaprode, the small town. The place has one of the few sandy beaches in West Rügen. Accordingly, there are also a lot of holiday homes to be found here, because all those who come to Rügen rely on proximity to the beach. You should also consider this if you are thinking of buying a holiday home on Rügen. The land and property prices in and around beach resorts are accordingly sought after. <hiddenlink href="https://fivmagazine.de/ferienhaus-traumhaus-am-meer-see-kaufen-bauen-vorteile-nachteile-tipps/" data-type="post" data-origin="de" data-origin-url="/?p=107203">Learn more about buying a holiday home here.</hiddenlink>

Göhren: Popular spa and holiday resort

One of the most sought-after areas on the island is the small town of Göhren in East Rügen. The long stretches of beach and the calming air and atmosphere make the place particularly popular. The town also has a lot to offer in terms of leisure activities. From adventure golf, popular photo spots to a bike rental that allows you to actively explore the town and especially the surrounding area, you will find everything that makes your holiday a special experience.

Sellin: Colourful starting place with pier and dog beach

Also an absolute perennial favorite among the Rügen resorts is the town of Sellin. Because the city has a lot to offer from a pier that reminds of the famous piers from England or the U.S., mini golf or a hand beach where your four-legged friend can really let off steam, the possibilities are almost limitless. Cultural heritage can be admired at the Amber Museum and the close proximity to the Hochufer hiking trail guarantees at least one day of action.

Insider tips: unexplored sights

Always exploring the tourist attractions can get boring in the long run, especially if you are not the first time on Sylt. In this case, it is a good idea to make a stop outside the standard places and areas. After all, the island is not huge and many things can easily be reached in a bike trip. Where you should definitely stop by we tell you here.

Chalk cliffs, Cape Arkona and Co. from above – Video

To get you in the mood for your stay, we have already put together an overview of what awaits you on the Baltic Sea island. Especially the famous chalk cliffs are admired by many onlookers every day.

Lietzow book station

Bookworms, vintage fans and nostalgics take note! On Rügen there is a very special place for you to go to. In Lietzow on Ostrügen there is one of the cutest little bookstores you can imagine. Here you can find everything from Schiller to J.K. Rowling in new and old garb. But also records are in the assortment. If you can’t get enough of the colourful covers and golden lettering from days gone by, this is the place for you.

Vintage car museum very close to the beach

We imagine an eventful day on Rügen like this. You start the day with a short round of laser tag, then at lunchtime to treat yourself to a small snack in one of the many Binzer restaurants and then spend a little time on the beach. In the afternoon you can stroll through the informative Oldtimer Museum and finish off the evening in a beach bar. Does this sound like a programme that interests you? Then you definitely have to go to Ostseebad Binz and spend at least one day there.

Pansevitz castle ruins: surroundings to relax in

From the lively town of Ralswiek you can reach the castle ruins of Pansevitz in just 15 minutes by car. The remains of the former castle are a place of peace and quiet. In addition, they stand for a piece of history, because actually this castle had survived the times of the existence of Rügen as a principality. However, during the Second World War, the citizens of Rügen had to get creative and for this reason they used the empty castle as building material. Thus, the townscape was created, which is offered there today.

The best beaches for kids, dogs and co.

Who goes to Rügen wants beach, nature and maybe a little action. The most beautiful places to relax and also everything where you can live out your sporty streak and enjoy the sea at the same time, we tell you here. In addition, you will find out where you can best travel with your four-legged friend.

Binzer Strand: Long fine sand beach

Very close to the Oldtimer Museum you will find a particularly beautiful white sandy beach on the east coast of Rügen. Not surprisingly, the beach was called Binzer Strand and stretches for kilometres down the east coast of the island. There is a free place guaranteed for almost everyone. Those who like sports and exercise will also be thrilled by the beach volleyball courts.

Largest seaside resort on the island

White villas, beautiful promenades and elegant piers

Dog beach Sellin: Fun for the four-legged friend

A mixture of pebble and sandy beach offers the dog beach of Sellin. Don’t worry, this beach is of course not exclusively for dogs, but on many public beaches on Rügen dogs are not particularly welcome. At most even forbidden. This means that careless dog owners face a hefty fine if they don’t abide by the regulations. The dog beach Sellin gives your four-legged friend the opportunity to really let off steam.

South beach Göhren: Jet skiing and sports on the beach

We have already sung the praises of Göhren in the previous section, because the place is popular with young and old. The reason for this is the variety of leisure activities, which also includes the south beach. There, especially the sporty among us feel good, because there are different possibilities for kite surfing, beach volleyball and even jet skiing!

Activities: Culture and sports on Rügen

There are so many things to do on the Baltic Sea island that it definitely won’t be boring. For every age and every taste there are things that can be experienced. Whether sporty on the road or full of curiosity, with these tips you will definitely get your money’s worth.

Sports beaches: exercise on holiday

The south beach of Göhren is not the only sports beach that the island has to offer. At each of the lively sandy places you will find different activities. Have you always wanted to learn how to surf, for example? Then you can do that on Rügen at the right time of year. You can also go jet skiing and rent boats on the beaches. Sports beaches in particular also offer you the option of finding teams to play football, beach volleyball and more.

Ralswiek: On the trail of the pirates

The Störtebeker Festival in Ralswiek takes place over a few weeks during the hot summer months. During this time, the most diverse acts can be seen on the open-air stage. Always at the forefront is the staging of the story of Klaus Störtebeker. At the end of the 12th century he was famous and feared as a pirate on the Baltic Sea. This has helped him to great fame until today which at the same time has the consequence that until today his life from the activity as a pirate to the execution in 1406 is so well documented that his story is often dramaturgically recreated.

Play golf: Ranzow Castle Golf Club

Rügen offers the perfect golfing environment. It can get windy here, but if you like a fresh sea breeze and want to enjoy it for as long as possible, Rügen is the place to be. The temperatures are mostly moderate, which helps to stay on the golf course for a long time without sweating. In addition, the risk of sunburn during an extensive round of golf is much lower when the sky is a little overcast. However, especially in the summer months, you often look for the clouds in the sky in vain. Ultimately, you can’t always assume perfect golfing weather here.

However, you don’t have to look far for the perfect golfing environment, because the Golfclub Schloss Ranzow offers the best courses and exclusive service at a moderate price. Those who visit Rügen more often can rely on a membership here.

Accommodation: from campsite to holiday home

Ever thought about a second home on Rügen? We tell you briefly and concisely the most important facts about the Rügen housing market. In addition, there are hotel prices and campsites that will make your heart beat faster. Still no suitable camping equipment? No problem, because here we tell you what you need for a successful trip.

You can read about what’s involved and how to find your dream holiday home in our <hiddenlink href="https://fivmagazine.de/ferienhaus-traumhaus-am-meer-see-kaufen-bauen-vorteile-nachteile-tipps/" data-type="post" data-origin="de" data-origin-url="/?p=107203">article on holiday homes</hiddenlink>.

Itinerary to Rügen by ferry, car, train and more

A holiday on Rügen is a very special experience for the whole family, but in order to spend a few days on the beach you first have to make the journey to the beautiful island. To arrive in Rügen you have different options available, which we summarize for you below.

Crossing by ferry

The easiest way to get to the Baltic island is by ferry from Stahlbrode. From there, a car and passenger ferry crosses every 25-30 minutes to Glewitz in the southern part of Rügen. If you are looking for a snack after the crossing, you will be disappointed, because you will be welcomed in Glewitz by a beautiful beach, but it is recommended to drive a little further into the island for holiday apartments and gastronomy. There you will find much more accommodations and restaurants. Already the small town of Losenitz, a little northeast of Glewitz is well equipped. The drive takes only two minutes.

By train and long-distance bus to the island

From Strahlsund you can also easily get to Rügen. The regional train goes once across the island to the popular town of Ostseebad Binz. There you will find a variety of fine sandy beaches and many luxury hotels, as well as holiday apartments directly on the beach. There are also offers with the long-distance bus, which unfortunately take much longer than the journey by car and train.

This is why it is possible to drive to these attractions, but from a certain point on, one has to park the car and climb the rest of the way by bike and on foot. To make it easier for you, there are some park and ride facilities.

Location in the north-west of France

The French peninsula is full of culture, as the Bretons are particularly proud of their country. The relationship between Brittany and France is similar to that between Spain and Catalonia. You know me, you live together, but you don’t really feel like you belong to the rest of the country. Nevertheless, French is spoken here, of course, and also otherwise Brittany is not so different from the rest of France.

Best time for unforgettable trips to Brittany

At the very beginning, it should be mentioned that Brittany is by no means known for its maximum temperatures in France. Rather, you’ll find a mild, pleasant climate here, which rarely exceeds 30 degrees Celsius even in summer. The masses of tourists are attracted every year mainly by the impressive cliffs and friendly inhabitants. The region is especially popular for camping holidays in France.

Weather map for current temperatures

Maybe you’re thinking about going to one of the beautiful places on the French coast soon, or you’re already sitting in the car on the direct way to Brest, but you’ve completely forgotten to check the weather? No problem, we provide you with current temperatures and all other relevant information about the current wind and weather situation in Brittany.

Getting there: Travel time, stops and more

Before you even think about your accommodation, the very first question is: How do I get to Brittany? Of course, there are many different options, all of which will get you to Brest, Crozon or wherever else you want to go in the northwest of France. Of course, public transport is limited, especially in rural areas, but there are many other options to get you from A to B here.

By car: tranquil route through beautiful French small towns

Exploring Brittany by car is a particularly good option if you want to get around quickly and keep all your freedoms free while you’re there. However, the drive from Germany to Brittany is not quite short. From Saarbrücken, one drives straight over the A4 past Reims and Paris to Rennes, the capital of Brittany. But even if one is already at the German-French border and passed Saarbrücken in France, one still has at least 7 hours to drive to Rennes.

Here, a small stopover is a good idea, so you can not only see the northwest, but also explore the rest of France for a little moment. For example, the small town of Le Mans is located directly on the way to Brittany. This attracts with historical, French buildings that make this small town particularly contemplative. The city itself can be easily explored with the tram and the next day it goes on to Brittany.

By train: fast transport with a stopover in Paris

Also by TGV, the French high-speed train network, you are in Rennes within a very short time. Small catch: The train to Rennes does not depart in Paris from the same station at which the TGV arrives from Germany. But here, the possibility to get to know the streets of Paris more closely opens up. On the way from one station to the other, one passes the beautiful sandstone buildings of the capital, sees museums, shops and the way even leads past the famous Notre Dame. A piece of the French metropolis can be included in the trip here quite relaxed between two train connections.

The optimal route to the coast to Brest

Unfortunately, when you come to Rennes, you haven’t quite arrived at the most beautiful part of Brittany. While the capital of the region naturally attracts with cultural programs and a beautiful cityscape with a mix of modern and classical architecture, most people come to Brittany to take a closer look at the impressive coasts.

The largest coastal city in the Breton region is Brest. With just under 140,000 inhabitants and as a research and university location, it is still a very inviting city that also has a lot to offer in terms of cuisine, but more on that later. Fortunately, from Rennes, the train as also the car brings one on a fast way to the most western city of France. Within 2 1/2 hours, one arrives relaxed at the coast.

Cultural diversity in the North-West of France: culinary and local experiences

The national pride of the Bretons is not only based on the special location as a peninsula, but also on the culinary specialties, the breathtaking nature and other attractions that you can only see in Brittany. What you should not miss at all, we tell you here.

Typical dishes: lobster, oysters, cider

The rest of France drinks wine, in Brittany they drink cider, a kind of apple wine, and in the most different versions. On the one hand, of course, the gently tart classic, but especially for variants with honey and currant liqueur, the coastal region is known. Every apple fan is well served here.

The favorable location directly on the sea promises excellent seafood and fish. Especially lobster and oysters, which are already considered a delicacy, are available here in particularly good quality. Friends of luxurious dishes will get their money’s worth here, but also a little more down-to-earth you can get the national specialties, for example in the form of mules frites, so scallops with fries, which are often served with mayonnaise and are available even in the most elegant restaurants.

Finally, the absolute insider tip. No one should leave Brittany without trying this dish at least once. France is known worldwide as the home of crêpes, but the Bretons have their very own version of the specialty. Made from buckwheat flour, the batter is darker than standard crêpes and the thin pancakes also differ in name, as the Bretons love their savoury filled galettes. Especially with fish and horseradish, but also other exquisite combinations. All in all, Brittany is definitely the place to be for gourmets.

Activities and Sightseeing: Sailing trips, flowering garden and idyllic hiking.

Whether it’s hiking on the cliffs of Brittany or relaxing on the beach, the region of France offers many relaxing and time-consuming activities. In addition to the most beautiful areas you must visit, we tell you what else you can do in Brittany to make your holiday unforgettable.

Activity number one when it comes to fun and action is sailing. The geographical position of the region makes it predestined for everything that falls into the area of boats. People especially often come here to skipper and get their sailing license in idyllic surroundings. All along the coast you will find sailing schools and boat rentals that will let you live out your exciting hobby. For those who like it a bit more luxurious, you can rent a private yacht here to pamper yourself.

All over the world, France is known for its colorful flower fields, which were used in the past and still today for perfume production. But also castles and fortresses from the Middle Ages had their own gardens, so that a committee was formed in France, which fulfills the task of preserving exactly these. La Domaine du Montmarin is particularly recommended. From May to August the gardens are in full bloom, but beware: the beautiful fields are unfortunately not allergy friendly.

Also a must-visit spot is the pink granite coast along the Atlantic border of the region that offers simply indescribable beaches of sand and gravel. Here you want to enjoy the sunset with a glass of Kir Breton. There are also lighthouses at regular intervals, called phare in French, which promise particularly beautiful holiday photos.

The small bay of Mont-Saint-Michel is not to be missed. Above the beach, the historical city walls of the castle tower up and offer a unique view over the Atlantic. But Mont-Saint-Michel is not any more an insider tip for a long time, that is why one unfortunately cannot stroll quietly and undisturbed through the little town. Nevertheless, a trip here is worth it all the time!

Williamsburg: East River skyline view & young crowd in Brooklyn

Williamsburg is the birthplace of hipsters and the current home of many artists and celebrities. Here you can find small shops, many interesting art galeries and several street markets. In addition to various small parks, Williamsburg is especially captivating due to its direct location on the East River, which makes walking along the riverbank with a view of the Manhattan skyline an absolute highlight. In summer, open air concerts and food markets take place here seasonally. In addition, you are directly connected to the center of Manhattan by the Williamsburg Bridge.

Home for artists and cultural workers

Williamsburg is not considered an alternative neighborhood, but over time a number of creatives and artists have settled here. Street art gives the residential buildings on the thoroughfares and converted factories an alternative and fresh charm. The district attracts a young and fashion-conscious crowd who enjoy spending time in the chic boutiques, trendy cafés and lively restaurants. Nightlife is also not neglected here, with bars and clubs.

Greenwich Village: “The Village” popular district with university for students

Greenwich Village is a very popular neighborhood in New York City, also centrally located in Manhattan. In the 1960s, the neighborhood with its tree-lined streets was still the center of the countercultural movement. Now more quiet, it’s home to many well-attended cafes, bars and restaurants, and charming little theaters are scattered throughout the neighborhood. Greenwich is also home to New York University and is home to many of the jazz clubs that Williamsburg is known for. The heart of the neighborhood is Washington Square Park, whose central plaza is bustling with activity. Celebrities such as Liv Tyler, Dustin Hoffman and Bob Dylan have lived here.

Trendy district & LGBTQ hotspot on the Hudson River

The Village is considered one of the most popular residential areas in New York and borders both the Hudson River and Broadway. Some artists and celebrities live here, but mainly young students and the young working class. The Village owes its name to the partially non-geometric streets (unlike the rest of Manhattan), which give the neighborhood a slightly chaotic and village-like charm. Together with Chelsea, Greenwich Village is the focal point as a lesbian and gay neighbourhood, which is also expressed by rainbow flags that are hung all year round.

Chelsea: Hudson River view from skyscrapers & apartments

Chelsea impresses with its diversity of housing options: the neighbourhood captivates with a mixture of townhouses, low-rise apartment buildings and noble and modern high-rises such as the latest architectural project “Hudson Yards”, which is unique in the world. Also worth seeing is the adjoining High Line, a former railway line that now serves as a leafy walkway through Chelsea’s houses. Here you will find over 200 art galeries in former factory buildings, as well as the Chelsea Market with its delicatessens, shops and restaurants. The proximity to the Hudson River makes this part of town even more attractive.

Modern artists’ quarter: parties, markets and leisure activities

You can’t really get bored in Chelsea: Whether it’s a stroll through the numerous art galeries, a shopping tour through the noble boutiques or trying out one of the many excellent restaurants, there are virtually no limits to what you can do here. In addition, Chelsea impresses with the converted railway line, the so-called High Line, over which one can walk through the houses of the quarter and look into one or the other living room and office. Hudson Yard offers enormous modern architecture here, and the housing market in Chelsea is particularly diverse.

Tribeca: quiet luxury district in the heart of Manhattan

According to Forbes magazine, Tribeca is the most expensive district of New York and home to numerous stars such as Justin Timberlake, Leonardo Di Caprio or even Beyoncé and Jay-Z. It’s not surprising, then, that it’s mainly luxurious shops and exclusive, high-priced restaurants that can be found here. The hip Tribeca is characterized by old industrial buildings, which have often been converted into modern and spacious loft apartments, which are accordingly expensive. Even though the neighborhood is located on the Hudson River and both Washington Market Park and Hudson River Park attract many families, it is very quiet here on weekends, considering that you are in the middle of Manhattan.

Lofts in old industrial buildings and 3 large parks – perfect for children

Living in Tribeca is extremely expensive, but many of the residents feel this is justified. In addition to the immediate proximity to the Hudson River, as well as the districts SoHo, Battery Park City and the Financial District, Tribeca can also score with 3 green spaces. You are really in the heart of Manhattan, and yet it is very quiet by New York standards, especially on weekends. Those who can afford to live here will definitely benefit from the investment and this safe neighbourhood is also the right choice for families with children.

Holiday on Norderney: the East Frisian island of Norderney is considered the second largest of these islands, belongs to Lower Saxony and covers an area of 26.3 km². The island is 14 kilometres long and 2.5 kilometres wide. You can get there by car, ferry, train or even by plane. So plan your next holiday and spend some nice and relaxing days. Whether with the family, with your partner or maybe even alone. Norderney is ideal for a short trip and a holiday by the sea. Here you can find out everything you need to know for your planning!

How to get there: Car, train, ferry or plane

Norderney is located in the north of Germany and belongs to the state of Lower Saxony. You have a total of four ways to get to the island. Either by train, car, ferry or plane. So nothing stands in the way of your next holiday and you can start planning right away!

Ferry: fast crossing by ship

To get to the North Sea island of Norderney, the way across the sea is not circumventable. who wants to bring his own car or camper is forced to make the last stop by car ferry. Even those who travel by train from all over Germany have to take the ferry to Norderney to start their holiday on the island.

Car: flexible and uncomplicated

As the second largest of the North Sea islands, Norderney is not one of those where there are no cars. There is even a bus line that drives a round about the island. Who nevertheless would like to arrive with his own car or with a camper can do this of course. Thanks to the option of the car ferry, this is very uncomplicated. After leaving the motorway, one drives with the car directly to the sea in the north of the German mainland and then onto the ferry that takes one to Norderney. The whole trip takes about an hour and then allows you to drive directly to your destination.

Rail: easy and without hassle

Those who do not need a car on the island, or would rather rent one can also start the journey to Norderney by train. A comfortable and with few circumstances connected way to get to the North Sea island. But also here it will be necessary sooner or later to change trains at least once, because also here the ferry will take over the last transport.

Airplane: fastest way from everywhere

For those who do not want to take the ferry, or for whom the way from home to the far north is just too far, should think about maybe choosing the way of flying. Norderney has a small airport which can be easily reached by plane from any major airport in Germany. The way with the airplane is probably the easiest, since no change is necessary, but also the most polluting.

Climate, Weather & Average Temperature

The climate on Norderney is not particularly warm even in summer and due to the location directly on the water also relatively windy. The average temperature in summer is between 20 and 25 degrees. The annual precipitation on the island is above average compared to the rest of Germany, which is common on all North Sea islands.

Water temperature: warm temperature in summer

The water temperature reaches, as you would expect thanks to the German climate in the summer months between July and September with 20-23 degrees their maximum temperatures. So the water is quite suitable for swimming in these months. In winter, however, it is significantly cooler, but the cool water also means a particularly great climate on the island, which can be very relaxing especially for those who live in the city.

Winds: fresh breeze by the sea

The North Sea islands are known for their winds. The coastal climate is associated with strong and fresh winds that blow particularly strongly directly at the sea, i.e. on the beaches and dunes. With an average of 15 km/h the winds blow over the island and can also cause a sandstorm. The clean air is very appreciated by many tourists and is often the reason for the visits to the island, so a strong wind is of course an advantage, so that one can also take advantage of it.

Accommodation: camping or hotel?

When choosing your accommodation, you will be faced with the first decision, which you should have planned well before you arrive. You should think about whether you would prefer to cater for yourself or whether you would prefer to have a freshly cooked meal for every meal and your accommodation. The various options and differences between camping, apartment or holiday home and hotel are serious. We’ll help you compare the different options here to make your decision a little easier.

Camping with the whole family

On Norderney there are numerous campsites with a view of the sea or the Duhnen. Camping is compared to conventional accommodation usually a cheaper option and offers besides this advantage also a lot more adventure. Especially for children or teenagers camping is a very nice experience and a lot of fun. So think for yourself whether you prefer camping to a hotel on your next holiday.

Hotel & apartment: for families, by the sea & with pool

If a camping holiday is not for you, you can of course also rent a room in a hotel or a permanent accommodation. On Norderney there are many hotels directly by the sea, with pool or designed for families. You can also rent holiday homes, apartments, Airbnb’s or apartments. So there is something for every taste and in every price range!

The most beautiful places: white dune, planetary path & lighthouse

Norderney has many beautiful corners. Of course, there is not only the simple beach and the many dunes with their great plants to see, because the nature Norderney has much more to offer. Besides reserves for seals and the very special and protected dunes, where you can spend a wonderful day in the beach chairs, there are also extraordinary natural spectacles that tourists like to visit every year. Some of the special highlights of the island include the historic lighthouse and the windmill, which always attract many people.

White dune: white beach & the best restaurants

The white dune is not only a beach on Norderney, but also a very famous restaurant. The white dune or also called Ostbad stretches over the narrow eastern beach of the island and convinces especially with its beautiful view. The dune has very special white sand and unbelievably many plant species that one is used to from the North Sea. The associated restaurant is also very well known and popular all over the island. There are North Sea typical dishes, such as fish and crab rolls as a snack, or of course main courses for a wonderful lunch or dinner.

Planetary path: walk in the solar system

The planet path is a beach path and worth a walk on the beach in any case. It gets its name because of the many information boards, which should represent our solar system in the scale of 1.1 million. Thus, the hiking path starts with the sun and then leads once through the whole solar system. In total, you hike a little over an hour.

Lighthouse: special piece of the North Sea

The Norderney lighthouse has some special features and is therefore a very special piece of the North Sea, which you should not miss. A great excursion to do some sports and yet see something particularly beautiful. The top of the lighthouse is reached after a little more than 250 steps and lends a unique view over the island. It is the only lighthouse in the world under whose walls you can stand and also the only one of all North Sea lighthouses whose light turns to the left. Isn’t that something?

Here you can find the lighthouse. Explore the surroundings virtually!

Activities: Mudflat hiking, quad biking & horse riding

Especially for those who like to do a lot of sports, Norderney is a great island. There are many bike paths and great opportunities for extensive and beautiful beach walks. A mudflat hike is of course also a great way to keep moving a bit during your holiday or you can take part in the triathlon that takes place every year in the summer. Especially interesting for the younger holidaymakers are the adventurous quads that you can rent everywhere to get around and as a tour on the island. A guaranteed highlight of the holiday.

Horse riding: for all animal lovers

For the adventurous and sporty among you, horseback riding by the sea is certainly a unique and priceless experience. Whether you have ridden many times in your life or not, horseback riding tours on the island are an offer that is definitely worthwhile.

Quad biking: Action on the beach

There are a few different providers that offer guided Segway and Quad tours across the island. You drive about 1.5 hours with a leader over the island and can look at the exciting places. The Quads and Segways are of course driven alone and there is a detailed safety briefing before it starts, so that anyone who has never driven the whole thing from the beginning safely mastered and above all is ensured that no one can hurt himself or others.

Mudflat walk: ideal family holiday

Everyone knows them. Whether from the family holiday from childhood, or from a movie; The mudflat hike. Thanks to the strong ebb tide in the North Sea, it is possible to make a hike through the part of the island that is otherwise covered by the North Sea in a certain hourly cycle, which especially the inhabitants of the island know very well. Together with a cotton wool expert, one walks through the wet sand and learns a lot about the things that happen under the sea. Animals, plants and their behaviour are shown and explained in detail. Oh, to find amber is not rare during mudflat walks. But you should not go alone on the trip, because the tide is very dangerous and for non-experts often a surprise.

Beaches: bathing or dog beach?

What is the focus of a holiday on an island? Of course, the sea and the associated beaches. What would be a holiday at the North Sea, without the many great beach days that you want to experience. of course, you also want to have the perfect place on the beach. Be it in a rented beach chair, on a towel in the sun or under the beach shell you brought with you. But to find the perfect beach is not as easy as one often imagines, because some things have to be considered. For example, if you want to take your dog with you, you need to think in advance whether you are allowed to take him with you.

Sandy beach: white sand & beach chairs

There is definitely enough sandy beach on the North Sea island of Norderney. Beautiful white sand lies on all the beaches of the island. Especially the popular beach chairs make a trip to the beach so attractive. Although Norderney is the second largest island in Germany, it is still not too big. So there are not many activities that do not revolve around the great beach, which can be reached from anywhere in just a few minutes walk.

Come and see the beautiful beaches for yourself and explore the surrounding area!

Dog beach: perfect for four-legged friends

Dogs are very welcome on Norderney. This is also very important and there are many accommodations that allow overnight stays with dogs. Of course, excursions with dogs are also allowed on the beaches. However, leashing is compulsory on these beaches as well. However, walks with dogs are also permitted (also with a leash requirement) on all other beaches. The so-called “Schietbüdeln” are actually available everywhere on the island, so that nothing gets dirty. Because of course also here applies: The dirt of your dog you have to remove immediately, so that the island also remains nice and clean.
