Denmark – Dive with us into the world of Denmark, between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, accompanied by our expert Jørgen Laustsen(Feline)! In this talk we will explore the unique facets of this enchanting country. Denmark, characterized by breathtaking nature, warm people and a rich history, has so much to offer. Let’s explore Denmark’s picturesque coastlines, cultural diversity and culinary highlights together as Jørgen (a Dane himself) shares his deep insights. Good food, beautiful vacation homes and a lot of nature between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea: Welcome to Denmark!

Why many love Denmark as a vacation destination

FIV: What do you think makes Denmark such an attractive destination for vacationers?

Feline: Nature, especially the long coastline and the seas. Denmark is a small country, about 5000 km² smaller than Lower Saxony, but still has 7000 km of coastline, most of which are sandy beaches. You never feel cramped, as there are fewer inhabitants in Denmark (5.8 million) than in Bremen (6.6 million).

There are very different beaches. On the North Sea coast you can find many beautiful beaches, but also a sea that you have to respect especially. On calm, sunny days it is nice to refresh yourself in the water, but if the sea is choppy and the waves are too big, you should not swim. On the other hand, you can enjoy the view from the beach.

Vacation with family, dog & Co.

On the east coast of Jutland and on the islands, the sea is much calmer and therefore particularly suitable for families with small children. There are more than 500 dog parks, and there is usually no leash requirement on the beaches from October to March. There are many opportunities for fishing.

Danes love strawberries with cream; the red berries are sold all over Denmark, often as self-service at farm stores. This is a delicacy that you should definitely try.

Flea markets are almost a kind of national sport in Denmark; they are almost everywhere and you can easily spend a few hours there. Maybe you find something, maybe not, but the search is a lot of fun.

In the larger cities and especially in the market towns there are very “hyggelige” town centers that offer a combination of cultural experiences, shopping and interesting buildings.

The most beautiful regions

FIV: Which regions in Denmark would you recommend for different types of travelers, for example families, nature lovers or culture lovers?

The most beautiful places for … Families & Kids

Feline: Depending on the age of the children: for young children East Jutland and the islands are suitable, because here they have many opportunities for fun in the water. When the children are older, the North Sea coast offers many opportunities and even bigger beaches.

The most beautiful places for … Nature lovers

Feline: The most beautiful is…

If you like to be near the sea, it doesn’t really matter much where you are in Denmark!

Most Germans vacationing in Denmark are on the route from Rømø to Søndervig. Although Ringkøbing Fjord and the Tipperne nature area offer great nature experiences, Denmark has much more to offer. North of the Limfjord, the landscape changes significantly. Sand dunes are much more prominent here, and the old fishing towns are a truly “hyggelig” experience.

Råbjerg Mile, a wandering dune; for children a huge sandbox. At the tip of Jutland two seas meet; a walk (or a tractor ride) is a very special experience. The view at the tip is unique. Often you can see seals in the water and on the beach.

The most beautiful places for … Culture lovers

Feline: Although I was born and raised on Fyn and therefore may be biased, I recommend the combination of Odense (Art Museum, Brandts, HCA Museum and House) and the coastal market towns (Svendborg, Faaborg, Bogense, Middelfart, Nyborg, Assens and Kerteminde) on Langeland (Rudkøbing) and on Ærø (Rudkøbing and Marstal). There are a variety of cultural experiences here. The distances are short, so you can experience a lot in a few days. As a bonus, you cross beautiful and varied landscapes and at the end, with the exception of Odense, you are always by the sea.

Vacation homes in Denmark

FIV: What advantages do you see in booking a vacation home in Denmark compared to other types of accommodation?

Feline: The freedom and large space, private terrace, barbecue facilities (hot dogs, another Danish specialty). Often there is a fenced property, which means that dogs can run free and children can play in the garden without worrying. There are no parking problems, as there is always room for several cars. The possibility of vacationing with grandparents or friends under one roof.

FIV: What tips do you have for first-time travelers looking to book a vacation home in Denmark?

Feline: Of course, the time of year plays a big role – but in general I recommend that you think about your requirements and wishes in advance. How many people are there, do you need a fenced property or not, or would you rather have a pool and sauna? From my own experience I can also say that if teenage girls are with you, you can never have too many bathrooms.

The most beautiful times of the year

FIV: Are there certain times of the year that you think are particularly recommended to visit Denmark?

Feline: Most Germans visit Denmark in the summer. This season is really beautiful in Denmark. The temperatures are very pleasant and are often between 20-25 degrees. When it gets warmer, the coasts are always easy to reach. As in Germany, the weather is unpredictable, but if it rains, you can easily find activities or sights indoors. The bright nights in summer are especially beautiful.

Spring, autumn and winter: Each season has its own charm!

Nature is changing and there are always great experiences to discover (cycling, hiking). You can actually say that the motto of the year is “Time for each other”.

FIV: What local activities or attractions near cottage locations in Denmark do you think travelers shouldn’t miss?

Feline: Of course, it depends on the location, but in general: beaches, hiking trails, bike paths, activities with dogs, local market towns, animal parks, museums and much more. Since the distances in Denmark are very short, as already mentioned, there are many possibilities to find the right offer.

Denmark past and present

FIV: What trends or changes in tourism to Denmark have you observed in recent years?

Feline: Many Danes rediscovered their own country during the pandemic and continue to vacation here. Another big change is the liberalization of cancellation terms; this is also a consequence of the pandemic. Today there are really short cancellation periods, often up to 45 days before arrival. In recent years we have also seen climatic events, such as the extremely high temperatures in southern Europe this year. When it is over 40-45 degrees Celsius and the sun is shining all day, it becomes too hot for some guests. I believe that in the future more guests will therefore choose more northern destinations, including Denmark.

Now another insider tip!

FIV: Do you have any personal insider tips or recommendations for travelers to make their Denmark experience even more special?

Feline: When I was a kid, my parents always vacationed in North Jutland, so it became a tradition. If I’m not there at least once a year, I feel like it wasn’t a “real vacation”. Later, I passed on my love for this part of Denmark to my daughters, and we often vacationed there together with my parents. It’s really great.

I started with Funen and I want to end with Funen. My insider tip for those who love the sea and the coast is that Fyn is the focus of Denmark for porpoises. There really is a large amount of them that you can watch from the coast; a great nature experience.

If you like fishing, the waters around Fyn offer really good opportunities, among other things, to catch sea trout.

Thank you very much!

We hope that you are as excited about the treasures of Denmark as we are. The enchanting nature, the rich culture and the warm people are waiting to be discovered by you. We wish you unforgettable adventures in Denmark! Thanks to our Denmark Local Expert Jørgen Laustsen from Feline!

Camping on the Moselle – wine tasting, bike tours & small villages

Camping on the Moselle is a must! Who wouldn’t want to be surrounded by a pleasant climate, vineyards and picturesque villages as far as the eye can see? In addition, camping on the Moselle is especially good because of its fantastic selection of cycling and hiking trails. Boredom certainly does not await you on the Moselle! Atmospheric wine festivals, wine tastings and local food in one of the many Straußwirtschaften or at the site’s own restaurant have already enchanted not only one.

Flowering plants in the middle of the tall forests with clean air But who still needs a break from the endless nature. He can consider himself lucky, because the excellent location of the campsites combines nature and sights. A large number of campsites are located in the immediate vicinity of many small towns and villages. This makes it easy to plan attractions and short trips for the whole family. If camping interests you, read more about accessories and camping accessories here.

The Moselle from the air – drone video

In this video you can see the Moselle from the air and you can already plan your next trip to one of the small villages.

Advantages and disadvantages of camping in NRW

The most important advantage for real adventurers is that when camping you are in the middle of nature. This means of course that there are bugs, which sometimes get into the tent or the caravan. In addition, the sanitary facilities, so toilets and shower facilities are not as pleasant as in a hotel, but for that you save a lot of money if you make a camping trip instead of treating yourself to a few nights in a hotel or in a holiday apartment.

Kids and pets also often have more fun at a campsite, because they can really let off steam and no one complains about the noise. That’s why a camping trip is a great type of family holiday. Of course, a camping trip is not as relaxing as staying in a hotel, because you have to do the shopping, cooking and washing yourself, sometimes even under more difficult conditions.

But in return you have your freedom, you are not tied to a place and time. Very desirable campsites are often crowded, not quiet, and there can be annoying neighbors, but in return there is greater social interaction with other families and campers. This often results in friendships that sometimes last a lifetime.

Pros:

In the middle of nature

Cheaper option to hotel

More pleasant for children and four-legged friends (no one complains about the noise)

Freedom: not bound to place and time

Greater social interaction with other families, campers.

Disadvantages:

Toilet and shower facilities

Vermin

No 100% relaxation like in a hotel; shopping, cooking, washing under more difficult conditions

Very popular campsites: overcrowded, not quiet, annoying neighbours

City of Cologne: Cathedral, Rhein and tourism

Cologne – the well-known metropolis on the Rhine is fascinating. Cologne is known for the Cologne Carnival, but there is much more to discover and much to see: The important sights, cool and hip neighborhoods and of course the Rhine. The first thing you associate with Cologne is the Cologne Cathedral. Cologne Cathedral is located right next to the main train station and is the landmark of the metropolis. If you are at the Cologne Cathedral, you should definitely climb it and look at Cologne from above.

A visit to the old town of Cologne is also worthwhile in any case, because this impresses with colorful houses and pubs on the Rhine. If you are a beer lover, you should definitely go to a brewery and drink a Kölsch beer, because they are very famous. Especially cool for couples: You can attach a love lock to the Hohenzollern Bridge, and thus promise each other eternal love.

Hip neighborhoods like the Belgian Quarter or Ehrenfeld are worth a visit, and are perfect for trying out the various restaurants on offer. The nightlife in Cologne is mixed, for everyone there is something suitable for an unforgettable evening in Cologne.

Cologne Cathedral

Rhine

Cologne Old Town

Hohenzollern Bridge

Holidays on the Moselle: The most beautiful cities, sights and accommodation – the Moselle offers a wide range of possibilities. Unlike a certain place or a big city, you have 544 kilometres of “space” to choose the right accommodation, the right place to stay or the most beautiful sightseeing tour. Whether France or Germany, the landscapes along the Moselle all have one thing in common. The wonderful, vast nature, the flowering plants, the love of wine and the peaceful peace. There are many places along the Moselle that are worth seeing. Places that convince with their history or with their selection of attractions. But there is one thing you have to be prepared for on a trip to the Moselle – when you return to the big city you will miss this connection to nature and the peace and quiet.

The most beautiful cities and sights on the Moselle

With a length of 544 kilometres there are many places along the Moselle. In our beautiful neighbouring country France the Moselle has its source, more precisely in the Vosges mountains at Col de Bussang. In Lorraine it flows through Remiremont and Épinal, in a wide arc around Nancy to Metz and further north. In Germany, the largest section is located in the Rhineland. Green landscapes, mountains with numerous old castles and palaces, the Rhineland only sprouts from breathtaking nature and remnants of past times. Whether it is a picnic with a view of the narrowest loop on the Moselle, a visit to the historical monuments from Roman times in Trier or a trip on Germany’s first three-cable railway across the Rhine – the towns along the Moselle make any long-distance holiday look cheap.

We have put together the most beautiful towns on the Moselle for you:

Trier

Trier: Porta Nigra, Hauptmarkt, Dom & Co.

Trier is a historically valuable city. It is one of the oldest cities in Germany and by far the most beautiful city on the Moselle. What you should definitely see in Trier are the typical sights, which are not so popular for nothing! At the top of the list is Porta Nigra (more about that in a moment). But you should also see the Simeonstraße, the main market and the cathedral St. Peter.

The most important sights in Tier:

Porta Nigra

Main market

St. Peter’s Cathedral

Liebfrauenkirche

Amphitheater

electoral palace

Imperial Baths

Cafe in Trier? My Tip

When you arrive in Trier, you are probably looking for a way to plan your day! Therefore I have a cute café here, where you can relax and have time to learn a little bit about Trier.

Café Zeitsprung

Address: Weimar Alley 1

Stop Mustorstr.

Porta Nigra: Must have seen

As far as history is concerned, the city offers not only the Porta Nigra, but also the cloister at Trier Cathedral, built in 1245, including a cemetery. The Porta Nigra, which translates into English as “black gate”, is the only remnant from Roman times in Trier. It is believed to have been built in the second century. Since 1986 the Porta Nigra has been under the protection of UNESCO. For just under 4 Euros you can admire the interior of the old Romanesque gate. The cloister at the cathedral of Trier was built in 1245 during the gothic period. The Trier Cathedral and the Liebfrauenkirche are connected by it and at the same time enclose the cemetery of the bishops lying there.

Cochem: Reichsburg Cochem, Capuchin monastery & mustard mill

Far and wide green meadows and fields, the sky is reflected in the Moselle and on top of one of the mountains is probably the most beautiful sight on the Moselle – the Reichsburg Cochem. But of course the city has more to offer. The mustard mill has existed for more than 200 years and during a visit you can try between 10 different kinds of mustard and chutney. It is also a perfect gift for the family.

Reichsburg Cochem: The most important landmark

Reichsburg Cochem – Its history is both tragic and touching. The castle was built between 1100 and the first half of the 12th century. Uunder the command of a Lieutenant de Saxis the castle was set on fire, undermined and blown up on 19 May 1689. At that time, many castles in southwest Germany suffered the same fate. It was not until 1877, at the request of Louis Fréderic Jacques Ravené, that the ruins were reconstructed into a castle in neo-Gothic style to be used as a summer residence for his family. During the Second World War the Reich Minister of Justice Otto Georg Thierack had a special Nazi training centre for lawyers set up here. The mosaic portrait of St. Christopher created by an Italian master in 1870 was destroyed during the National Socialist era. Today the Reichsburg belongs to the city of Cochem and is one of the most important sights and attractions in the Rhineland.

Koblenz: German corner, cable car & romantic museums

Churches, castles, palaces and historic townhouses reflect the history of one of the oldest cities in Germany. Koblenz has a large number of museums that display everything from archaeological finds to French art from the Rhine Romantic period. Enter a world of past history or float with Germany’s first three-cable railway across the Rhine up to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. From the second largest fortress in Europe you have an indescribable view of the “Upper Middle Rhine Valley”, which has been declared a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO since 2000.

Here you can find more sights:

Traben-Trarbach: Instagram Location for fantastic photos

Traben-Trarbach offers many attractions. Above all it attracts photographers. The castle ruins of Grevenburg, as well as the old town with its winding little streets, offer a perfect set for amateur photographers. Only a few foundation walls and the commander’s house are left of the 14th century castle. This provides cool picture motives.

Did you know that Traben-Trarbach has the oldest minigolf course in Germany next to the Buddha Museum. It is probably the largest museum in Germany, which presents Buddha statues from all over the world.

Fancy a little sport? A great opportunity for an excursion with the whole family is the minigolf course in Traben, which was opened in 1955. For 2,50€ you can play golf balls until sunset.

Mosel loop near Bremm: View from the steepest vineyard in Europe

The beautiful landscape motif is the narrowest loop on the Moselle. In the vineyards you can enjoy this view with a picnic basket, a bottle of wine and your love. The small village Bremm has made it to the 20 most beautiful villages in the world because of this view. The via ferrata Calmont, which is the steepest vineyard in Europe, offers the most beautiful view.

Tip for the hobby photographers: With a wide angle lens you can get the whole loop on the picture!

Map of Germany: At the Moselle

The Moselle has its source in the southern Vosges, in France and flows into the Rhine after 544 kilometres in Koblenz at the German Corner. This is known as the kiss between the Rhine and Moselle.

Weather: On the Moselle

today/ in 3 days

About 196 meters above sea level lies the Moselle. This of course also has an effect on the climate, which is mostly cold and temperate. During the driest month the precipitation is nevertheless high. The annual average temperature on the Moselle is 7.6 °C.

Q&A: Moselle

Where does the Moselle begin? How deep is the Moselle? Where is the Moselle state? Questions over questions, here are the answers.

Where does the Moselle begin?

The Moselle has its source in the southern Vosges near the Col de Bussang at an altitude of about 700 m and flows into the Rhine from the west at 59.7 m altitude from Koblenz at the Deutsches Eck, whose north-northeast end lies at 64.7 m above sea level.

How deep is the Moselle?

On average, the Moselle is about 2.5 metres deep.

Where is the Moselle federal state?

In Germany, the Middle Moselle is the approximately 120-kilometre-long section of the Moselle, which runs in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate from the city of Trier to Reil above Zell. The following section of the river up to where the Moselle flows into the Rhine is called Lower Moselle.

Which is the most beautiful city on the Moselle?

Trier is considered the oldest city in Germany and is definitely one of the most beautiful places on the Moselle.

How long is the Moselle?

The “Moselle” is 544 km long and flows into the “Rhine” at the “German Corner” in “Koblenz”. On French soil there are at the beginning only sporadic cycle paths along the “Mosel”.

Which rivers flow into the Moselle?

19 Rivers feed the Moselle with water. These include among others:

Moselotte

Vologne

Madon

Meurthe

Terrouin

How long is the Moselle cycle path?

The main route then continues through many small towns such as Bremm to the district town of Cochem, which is overlooked by the Reichsburg. (Length: 60 km; Traben-Trarbach at 110 m, Cochem at 86 m altitude).

Corona – this virus keeps the whole world in suspense. Since the beginning of the corona crisis, many countries have imposed an entry ban to stop or slow down its spread. As a result, many travel plans for the year 2020 have been shelved. We tell you all about COVID-19, the travel industry before Corona and the effects of the virus on the tourism industry. Travel portals such as TUI, outdoor camping providers such as Campwerk but also airlines such as Lufthansa leave a large part of their fleet on the ground.

Travel industry: important facts

The turnover generated by package tours in 2019 will amount to 6,957 million euros and the largest turnover worldwide will be generated in China.

Forecast: annual 1.8% increase in turnover from package tours

According to Statista, turnover from bookings of package holidays should amount to about EUR 7,123 million in 2020. So far, an increase in turnover from package tours and an increase in holiday trips in general has been observed every year. More and more people decide to see something of the world and put their money aside.

Increase in holiday trips in the last 10 years: +9.46%

Travel industry: Review of 2019

In order to assess the situation, it is necessary to take a look at the travel industry before the Corona crisis. A good example is the travel behaviour in 2019, when more turnover came from package tours than ever before.

Tip! Read more here: Corona Virus Facts

number of holiday trips in the last 10 years

Travel, whether as a package tour or a short weekend trip with your loved one, is becoming increasingly popular. For decades the numbers have been rising and there is no end in sight. Current figures on the slump in bookings under COVID-19 are not yet available. But after the crisis is before the crisis, accordingly the travel industry will quickly regain momentum.

Increase in the last 10 years: +9,46%

Here you can see the number of holiday trips made by Germans in the years from 2005 to 2019 in millions.

2019: 70.8 million

2014: 70.3 million

2009: 64.8 million

2005: 64.1 million

Increase over the last 10 years (2009 to 2019): +9.46%

Travel industry: Current

The corona crisis has a strong impact on the tourism industry in 2020, with cancellations and closures, but also a much lower total turnover to be expected. The various providers in the travel industry are assuming the worst.

What are the current effects?

Due to the Corona crisis, many people are currently cancelling their trips and cruises. Many countries have imposed an entry stop, which makes it impossible to fly on holiday despite the corona virus. The waves of cancellations have a strong impact on the tourism industry. Statista estimates that in 2020, the German travel industry will lose about 17% of its turnover and the Italian one about 20%. Another consequence is that the ITB tourism exchange in Berlin will not take place this year. Those who had booked a holiday hope to be able to cancel their trip in order not to be left sitting on the money. Some tour operators offer the possibility to cancel or rebook the trip and therefore have non-stop busy telephone lines. In addition, hotels remain empty for the most part and meetings and reservations are cancelled. Many employees in the tourism industry are laid off or have to expect short-time work. The Irish low-cost airline Ryanair has already cancelled 95% of its flights.

Aida Cruises cancels all cruises until mid-April

The entry conditions at ports are currently being tightened considerably. As a result, cruise ships are no longer allowed to dock in many ports. Due to the increasing number of cases of COVID-19, Aida Cruises announced on 20.3.2020 that the Aida travel season will be temporarily interrupted until the end of April 2020. Barcelona, one of the most important cruise ports in the Mediterranean, has also closed its port to ships with more than 500 passengers. Many cruise companies are currently making route changes in order to make the voyages possible.

Decreasing rates of the cruise operators

AIDA Cruises is a brand of the British-American cruise company Carnival Corporation & plc for the German-speaking market. Here you can see the current rate with big minus.

All Disney Parks are closed due to the Corona Virus

All Disney Parks close down first because of the corona virus. Also the Disney ship stays in the harbour for the time being. The Disney reacted to the order of the authorities and tries to slow down or stop the spread of the virus. The Disneyland Hotels will remain open, just like the shops and restaurants in Disney Village. Other amusement parks also had to follow the instructions of the authorities and close, such as Europa-Park. Since amusement parks can accommodate more than 1000 people, it makes sense and is safer to leave them closed for the time being.

Statistics: Consequences of the Corona Virus for international tourism

The corona virus threatens international tourism because many trips and cruises cannot take place. Due to entry regulations and entry stops worldwide, it is not possible to travel the way you could before the virus. Therefore the tourism industry has to expect much less turnover than they had before. The USA had expected a turnover of more than 170 billion US dollars in 2020, but now, due to the corona crisis, they estimate the turnover at about 150 billion US dollars. China has been hit even worse by the corona crisis – before the virus, sales there were expected to be around 125 billion US dollars, but now sales are estimated at 75 billion US dollars. Germany and Italy also have to expect less turnover, but are not as affected as China. Germany initially expected a turnover of about 30 billion US Dollars and now expects about 25 billion. Italy calculated 25 billion before the crisis, but can now only expect a turnover of 20 billion US dollars.

USA: about 11.76% less sales

China: about 40% less turnover

Germany: about 16.67% less turnover

Italy: about 20% less turnover

COVID-19 – origin, symptoms, distribution & protection

The Corona virus is in all news at the moment – it will be hard to distinguish real information from fake news. That’s why we have summarized the most important information for you, so that you know where the virus comes from, how it spreads, what complaints the infected people have and how you can protect yourself from the virus.

Origin of the virus

Where does the coronavirus come from and how did it spread? COVID-19 (the official name) originated in the Huanan Seafood wholesale market. This wholesale market mainly deals with seafood and wild animals. The market is located in the middle of Wuhan, China. The exact origin is still unclear, but we know that it is a novel virus, which is 80% identical to the SARS corona virus. The virus is transmitted from person to person and an infection is also possible during the incubation period.

New coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2

beta coronavirus, genetically corresponds to over 80 percent with the SARS coronavirus

Transmission happened from animal to human.

origin in the Huanan seafood wholesale market, a seafood market in Wuhan

Exact origin of the virus still unclear.

Human-to-human transmission is proven according to WHO

According to the infectiologist, there are now increasing signs that infection is also possible during the incubation period (usually five days, up to 14 days, in individual cases longer).

Symptoms: cough, fever, difficulty breathing & Co.

The symptoms of the corona virus are very similar to the symptoms of flu or even a harmless cold. At least 80% of the diseases progress with mild to moderate symptoms. Others often show the typical signs of viral pneumonia – such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, breathing difficulties, muscle pain and fatigue. Rarely, patients also experience headaches or sputum. The risk group for which COVID-19 is dangerous are elderly or pre-sick people. In these cases, the corona virus can also lead to death.

Rare headache or sputum

At least 80 % of the diseases progress with mild to moderate symptoms

Deaths can also occur, especially in elderly patients with previous illnesses

Dissemination and international presence

The spread of the virus is rapid and difficult to control, as there is a long incubation period during which the infected persons do not yet have symptoms of the virus but are already contagious. The virus spread rapidly from China to the rest of the world. There are now 36,508 infected persons in Germany, 81,869 infected persons in China, 69,176 infected persons in Italy and a total of 416,686 infected persons worldwide. So far, 18,589 people have died from the corona virus worldwide.

Protection against the corona virus

To protect yourself from the COVID-19 virus, there are some precautions you should take. In recent weeks the corona situation has worsened, which is why it is so important to avoid crowds. The house should only be left when absolutely necessary. In order to avoid leaving unnecessarily, most shops have already closed their branches. Of course you still have to go shopping and to the pharmacy if necessary. When you leave the house, you should be careful not to touch your face, not to shake hands and to keep a certain distance from other people. One should cough and sneeze in the crook of one’s arm and not in the hand. You should also try to touch as few surfaces as possible, for example by pressing the elevator buttons with your ankle and not with your fingertip. When you get home you should wash your hands immediately, definitely with soap and for at least 20 seconds. Those who still got some disinfectant before it was sold out everywhere should also disinfect their hands outside in between. You should also air the rooms at home regularly and strengthen your immune system.

Wash your hands regularly as follows: at least 20 seconds with soap, up to the wrist

Sneeze or cough in the crook of your arm, not in your hand.

Don’t shake hands, give an elbow instead

Grip the face as little as possible, do not touch the mucous membranes of the face (mouth, eyes, nose) with your finger

Do not press buttons in the elevator with your finger, rather use your ankle.

Ventilate well.

Avoid crowded rooms and crowds

Camping – The perfect campsite, destinations and insider tips, new gadgets for living and cooking! For your next camping trip gi… Camping is the crackling of the campfire, the smell of wet grass and the birdsong in the morning. But camping is also waking up at the campsite with sea view and good sleep in the comfortable beds of the motorhome. No matter how much comfort or adventure you want, camping makes everyone happy. The multifaceted way of travelling and seeing many places on a small budget is inspiring more and more people. Here you can find out all about the different types of camping, the different destinations of campers worldwide and we’ll give you a few important tips for your next camping holiday.

Types of camping: tent, installation, camper & Co.

Whether tent, built-in or motorhome – there are different types of accommodation for the different needs of camping lovers. The different types of camping differ in price range and adventure degree. For true Indians who want to feel completely connected to nature, a simple tent is more suitable than a caravan. And for those who want a relaxing family holiday at the campsite, a mobile home is more suitable than a roof tent. There are different offers for different expectations. Each accommodation has its advantages and disadvantages, you just have to choose the accommodation that suits you best.

The most popular ways to camp:

Mobile homes and caravans – the comfortable way to camp

Rooftop tent – Do it yourself for your own car

Tent – Flexible, quick to set up and for every terrain

Camping under the open sky: pure nature

In the middle of nature – that is probably the most decisive argument for camping. Hear the sounds of rain at night, be woken up in the morning by the chirping of birds and spend the night exactly where you want to. Camping offers great flexibility when it comes to choosing a place to sleep. Wherever there is room, the camp can be set up. In addition, camping is the cheapest camping option, a throwing tent for two people is available from 25 Euros.

What you have to think about when camping is sleeping bags, otherwise it can get quite cold at night. A tent offers almost no insulation, so the comfort depends on the weather. Many tents are also not waterproof, so if it starts to pour out of buckets, the tent is soon under water. A simple tent also lacks sanitary facilities, but you get a real adventure feeling in the middle of the wilderness.

Advantages camping

Inexpensive, throwing tents for two are available from 25 Euro

Overnight stay in the open nature with starry sky

Not tied to one place

Disadvantages camping

Lack of comfort.

Sanitary facilities are missing

Dependent on the weather

Roof tent – sleeping on the roof of your own car

A roof tent is a slightly more comfortable option than a standard tent, because they are often hard-shell tents. Hard-shell tents are not only quicker and easier to erect, but also have better insulation than normal tents. In winter or at night you are guaranteed to be less cold than in a throw tent, but roof tents heat up quickly. When the sun shines on the tent in the morning, it quickly turns into a sauna. If it rains, the hard-shell tent is mostly waterproof, but often there is no roofed entrance or rain protection and the sleeping bags get some rain. In addition, the shoes have to stay outside, because there is no storage for shoes inside the roof tent. This can be a bit inconvenient when it rains, but of course you can put your shoes in the car and climb barefoot into the inside of the roof tent. Rooftop tents tend to be a little more expensive than normal tents, but they are just as little tied to campsites and therefore offer the same adventures as normal tents, just a little more comfort.

Offroad through the mountains – Video

Advantages roof tent

fast assembly

Better insulated than standard tents

Not bound to campsites

Disadvantages roof tent

Will be warm in strong sunlight

No shelf for shoes, no covered entrance

Installation – kitchen, bed, sanitary facilities & shelves in the car

For slightly more advanced campers with a minibus or family car, it is a good idea to look around for an installation and turn the minibus into a camping bus. There are different types of installation, such as kitchens, beds, sanitary facilities or storage facilities. A caravan or motor home may offer more space than a VW Bulli, but the weatherproof camping bus can also be used in everyday life. Comfort is not guaranteed with every installation, but you can arrange your camper van exactly the way you would like it to be by using various built-in parts. The size of the camper is determined by the size of the car, thus, one has of course less space in one’s own minibus or family car than in the caravan, but therefore, an installation is much cheaper.

Advantages DIY installation

Favourable installation costs

Convert the minibus into a camping bus

Weatherproof.

Kitchens, beds, sanitary facilities or storage

Disadvantages DIY installation

You need your own car.

Not much room.

Caravan – camping in a trailer for the car

A caravan is a trailer that you can attach to your own car for a relaxed holiday. It offers more living comfort than all other camping variants, because you have your holiday accommodation separate from the car. This means that you are still mobile during your holiday and can go shopping with your car while your caravan is on the campsite. Due to the length of the car and trailer it is harder to find a place to park than with a motorhome, but this is the cheaper option. A caravan can also be extended with an awning, which provides even more space and comfort. If you want to transport a caravan across the country, you should be prepared for the fact that driving the car will be more difficult and you will need a BE driving licence to drive a caravan. With this camping version there is less wilderness feeling, but travelling with children is easier in a caravan than in a throw tent.

Advantages caravans

Your own car for trips and excursions

More living space

Can be extended by an awning

Cheaper than a camper van

Disadvantages caravans

Driving licence BE required

Harder to find a parking space

Difficult driving

Caravan – free camping or camping site, car & apartment at the same time

Find friends on the campsite and shared campfire or wild camping near a lake and just relax? With a motorhome both is possible, because the motorhome is a comfortable but a bit more expensive camping option. With a motorhome it is possible to camp out as well as park on a campsite. There is a high degree of flexibility, because the onward journey is easy and it is easier to find a pitch with a motorhome than with a long caravan. Once you arrive at your holiday destination, it’s handy to have bicycles on site or rent them if you need to go to the supermarket or the beach is a bit further away, as packing up the whole camp and moving the motorhome from the campsite is quite a hassle. Compared to a caravan it is easier to drive, but you can expect loud noises, because the driver’s cabin is not separated from the rest. So the faster you drive, the more the dishes rattle.

Advantages camper van

Easier to find a pitch/ camper van sites

Easy driving

High flexibility

Wild camps and camping grounds

Disadvantages camper van

Expensive

Loud noises while driving

Mobility is missing at the holiday destination

Camping means a lot of family time, but it is important to remember that some types of camping are more suitable for families than others.

With a caravan or motor home you are always on the safe side, because this type of accommodation is weather protected and spacious. Often you will also have a caravan or camper van at a campsite, which makes it easier for children to make new friends and make friends. You can also have a nice family holiday with a throwing tent, but you should be aware that not all throwing tents are weather protected and it can get quite cold and wet in bad conditions. Especially with small children you should therefore take care to keep the trip in such conditions only relatively short, or plan it so that the weather plays along. With a roof tent you usually have less risk of having a wet and cold sleeping place, but it is not very spacious.

It is very important to prevent the threat of boredom. If you think of enough games, music and maybe even a DVD player for the car, you are on the safe side. We have put together a few game ideas for you, which can be very useful especially on long car journeys or at the campsite:

Maps (for example Mau-Mau)

UNO

I see something you don’t.

The yes-no game.

I’m packing my bag and taking it with me.

Comparison: Camping – beach, desert & mountains

Tent camp with sea view, barbecue on the campsite or be woken up by the first sunrays and loud birdsong – the different types of camping are different but each in its own unique way. Whether on the beach, by the lake or in the mountains and even in the desert you will meet adventurous campers. There are many different locations where you can have a good holiday. If you don’t like your holiday location, you are not tied down when camping and you can travel flexibly and find a new place to sleep because you have your accommodation with you practically all the time. For different places you always have to think about different equipment and consider the climate. Locations that invite you to camp:

Beach – warm summer nights and crashing waves

Lake – idyll and loneliness by the water

Mountains – fresh air at altitude

Forest – Adventures in the middle of nature

Desert – extreme temperatures and endless expanses

Camping at festivals – music, friends & fun

Festivals are also a good location for camping – because the tent offers cheap accommodation, mostly directly on the festival site. The essential things to consider when camping at a festival are, for example, getting tickets in advance. Barbecueing may be allowed on most festival grounds, but open fires are usually prohibited. You should also inform yourself about such regulations in advance.

When camping you should always make sure that all the garbage you produce is taken away, even if the festival area is not an untouched piece of nature. In addition, you have to take care that not too much noise is made and that you show consideration for the other campers. If every camping enthusiast informs himself in advance about the regulations on the site, camping at festivals is guaranteed to be a lot of fun. Being woken up in the morning by playing music, having an instant coffee against tiredness and sitting and barbecuing together in the evening – that is festival camping.

Accessories – from tent to camping lamp

There are a lot of camping accessories that you have to think about when you go on a trip. What should you do without a camping lamp after the sun has gone down? That is why it is important to have everything you can use with you. You should also be prepared just in case. Here are 10 things you should never forget. If you want to know if you have thought of everything, here you will find all gadgets at a glance: Camping accessories.

Sleeping in a tent

The A&O on your trip, before you think of accessories, is your tent. Because without a roof over your head it is hard to get a good night’s sleep. So that sleep is as comfortable as possible, think about a mattress early enough. Whether it is an iso-mat or an air mattress, it is good not to sleep on cold ground at night. You need a sleeping bag for the mattress, because at night the temperature drops and the sleeping bag is essential for frostbite!

Eating in camp

For the camp you definitely need camping chairs and a table. Camping furniture makes the camp a real home. You will also need a grill or oven so that you can get something hot to eat. And of course a cool box, because that way drinks stay cold all day long, even in summer.

Sunbathing on Venice Beach, walking on the Walk of Fame and swimming in the pool with a view of the Hollywood logo – this is Los Angeles, the city of angels. In California’s largest city, it offers many hours of sunshine and mild water temperatures. In LA you can meet stars like Justin Bieber or Brad Pitt while shopping, because many big names live in the city in the western USA. A vacation in LA is the dream of many – we tell you how it is possible and what you have to see on site.

Accommodation in Los Angeles

Holiday in LA – but where do you sleep? Does a hotel suit you better so that you have to take care of as little as possible? Or do you prefer to feel at home in a holiday apartment? The different types of accommodation suit different types of travel and meet different requirements. We have listed the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of accommodation.

Hotels in Los Angeles

Whether it’s a luxury hotel overlooking the Hollywood Sign or a budget overnight stay close to downtown for a packed and well-planned city break – there are hotels in Los Angeles that cater to a variety of needs. An overnight stay in the City of Angels is relatively expensive compared to other cities in the USA, but a trip to LA is worth it. The offers range from rooftop whirlpools to restaurants with open campfires – in the hotels in LA you can read almost every wish from your lips. FIV Magazine has compiled a list of the best hotels in Los Angeles for you. Take a look.

Holiday apartments in Los Angeles

A cheaper option would be a holiday apartment in Los Angeles. The advantages of a holiday apartment are, for example, that you can choose yourself when there is food and when the alarm clock should ring. You can’t miss breakfast if you prepare it yourself or eat it in a café. A holiday flat lets you be as independent as you want to be. And it is also somehow a small home of one’s own, with a lot of flair, but somewhere else. By the way, the landlords are mostly really nice people who also like to give insider tips about sightseeings and restaurants.

Los Angeles attractions

If you’re ever in Los Angeles, you probably plan to see as much as possible. Downtown or Santa Monica, LA has a lot to offer. You probably already know a lot of sets from various movies or series. So that you don’t waste your time and definitely see all the most important spots, we have compiled a list of sights that you shouldn’t miss. Remember to take pictures for Instagram, LA is guaranteed to make all your followers jealous.

Beverly Hills

Beverly Hills is known for the famous shopping street Rodeo Drive and has also convinced many celebrities of its beauty. It is the home of

Taylor Swift

Jennifer Aniston

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher

Katy Perry

Chrissy Dough and John Legend

Jessica Alba

Jennifer Lawrence

and many more. Beverly Hills is worth a visit because it boasts world-class shopping, expensive hairdressers and world-class spas. Besides sweet cafés, good restaurants and nice hotels, Beverly Hills has a lot of beautiful palm trees and a very special flair.

LA Downtown

Downtown, you should not miss out on your LA trip, as it is practically downtown Los Angeles. Here you will find many interesting neighborhoods, such as Chinatown, the Arts District, Little Tokyo and the Fashion District. There are many notable sights such as The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, an American church whose construction cost about 200 million US dollars. There are also the Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Broad Museum, Grand Park and Los Angeles City Hall. There it is worthwhile to go to the 27th floor, because here you can find a free uppervation deck from which you have a great view of the city.

Venice Beach

Colours everywhere – the colourful graffiti in Venice Beach definitely leaves an impression. Venice Beach is also known for its shopping street and many know the Muscle Beach from movies and articles. At the beach you can find young and old with dumbbells, jogging and experience the typical Californian fitness spirit. The Santa Monica Pier is the end of Route 66 and there you’ll find a small, somewhat overpriced but very famous amusement park. There you can ride a little roller coaster and eat sweet cotton candy. Our tip for Venice Beach is: Rent a Beach Cruiser bike! By this way, one gets comfortably from A to B or can drive alongside the beach with a music box on the luggage rack.

Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is probably the most famous sidewalk in the world. The first star was awarded to director Stanley Kramer in 1960. The Walk of Fame is a sidewalk that extends over 18 blocks on both sides of Hollywood Boulevard. It was inaugurated in November 1960 to revitalize the city of Hollywood. Here you can admire for example the stars of Elvis, Marilyn Monroe or Mariah Carey.

Los Angeles dinner

When we think of the USA, fast food chains shoot us in the head first. Whether McDonalds, Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken or Taco Bell and Five Guys – fast food is not only popular with the Americans, many chains are known and represented worldwide. But besides fast food there are a lot of other dishes that are very common in LA, or which you should try here. The reason for the varied cuisine are influences from all over the world. The FIV Magazine has taken a closer look at the cuisine of Los Angeles for you.

Latin and Hispanic influences

Because of California’s predominantly colonial European Spanish roots, Mexican territorial history, and original population of Meso-Americans, Spanish colonizers, and Mexican ranchers, Mexican and Spanish cuisine is very influential and popular in California, especially in Southern California. Commercial Mexican Taquería-style fast food, consisting of offerings such as burritos, fried beans, tacos, nachos and quesadillas, is widespread. Taquerías are found throughout California.

Asian and oceanic influences

As one of the US states closest to Asia and Oceania, and with a long-standing Asian-American and Oceanic-American population, the state tends to adopt foods from these national styles. The American sushi madness undoubtedly began in California; the term “California Roll” is used to describe sushi with avocado as the main ingredient. Nowadays, items like mocha ice cream and boba are very popular.

California Style Pizza

California-style pizza focuses on non-traditional pizza ingredients, but on fresh produce and grilled meat. First it was popularized by Wolfgang Puck’s Spago restaurants, later it was brought to the masses by restaurants like California Pizza Kitchen.

Barbecue

Barbecue has been a part of Californian cuisine since the Mexicans started grilling beef on ranches in pits in the 1840s. Santa Maria is famous for the tri-tip, a special type of beef that can be grilled, baked, braised or fried. The California barbecue style is also influenced by the regional Southwest American styles of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma, brought by thousands of Dust Bowl migrants. Chicken, ribs, sausages and steaks are also routinely grilled or smoked in a pit. The barbecue sauce used in this state is tomato-based, as in all other western states. However, the Santa Maria barbecue does not use sauce, but the taste of the tricorn and the slow, lively oak fire over which it is cooked. Compared to the pork spare ribs popular in the southern United States, baby back ribs from the western region are popular for barbecue.

Sandwiches, burgers and fast food

Southern California’s auto culture and the population’s dependence on the car as a means of transportation in California’s huge cities has greatly contributed to the popularity of classic drive-in and modern drive-thru restaurants. Restaurant chains like McDonald’s, Jack in the Box, In-N-Out Burger, Carl’s Jr. Wienerschnitzel, Del Taco, Taco Bell, Panda Express, Original Tommy’s, Fatburger, and Big Boy were all established in Southern California.

Accommodation in Turkey – hotels & holiday apartments

An important part of a journey is the accommodation. In Turkey there is every kind of accommodation, be it a holiday apartment or a hotel. Depending on your personal requirements, you have to weigh up what the perfect accommodation is for a carefree holiday. The FIV Magazine has listed the accommodation options for you to book the right accommodation.

Holidays Turkey: Cheap holiday apartments

Apartments are very practical and currently very popular. There are low budget holiday homes for travelers with a small budget, or large holiday homes with a pool complex, so everyone can find the right holiday home according to their budget. Apartments are practical, because you have your own kitchen, where you can prepare meals around the clock for a reasonable price, so you can organize your everyday life freely. Moreover, one avoids long queues at the buffets of all-inclusive hotels. What is also a plus point for a holiday flat is that one can often take the beloved pets with one. All tourist resorts in Turkey have a freely accessible beach, so you don’t have to rely on the hotel’s own beach.

Hotels in Turkey – Luxury & Wellness

Turkey has a wide range of hotels. There is a suitable hotel for everyone – from exclusive luxury hotels to adventurous family hotels or relaxing wellness hotels. The relaxing thing about hotels is that you don’t have to worry about anything, be it the food or cleaning your room. With a hotel stay, you can enjoy your holiday to the fullest, and just relax.

Kyoto is located in the Kansai conurbation on the main island of Honshu in Japan. The city is located about 400 km from today’s capital Tokyo and 40 km from Osaka. About 1.5 million people live in Kyoto on an area of about 830 km². The former capital is surrounded on three sides by mountains, only the south is accessible – this area is also called Rakunan, the traditional access area of the city. Besides its wealth of temples and shrines, and numerous educational establishments, Kyoto is known for its sake production, silk textiles, the special Kyo-Yuzen dyeing technique and its outstanding cuisine.

Kyoto is the sister city of many world-famous cities, such as Prague, Paris, Florence, Zagreb, Kiev and Cologne. It also maintains an official partnership with Istanbul, Qingdao and Viantiane, among others. Read more about Japan’s metropolises Tokyo and Kobe.

The highlights of Kyoto in 4D

Kyoto is Japan’s number 1 destination for tourists from all over the world. The former capital offers so many different impressions and experiences, something new, exciting or unusual can be discovered in every corner of the city. From a bird’s eye view Kyoto is breathtakingly beautiful – Fushimi-Momomiya Castle and the paradisiacal mountain village Miyama are a real insider tip! Arashiyama has been a popular excursion destination since the 8th century and has lost nothing of its beauty to this day. The Zen Buddhist temple Tenryuji, for example, impresses with its beautiful gardens, designed by the famous Japanese Muso Soseki, who was the first abbot of the temple. At least as worth seeing is the small temple Senkoji. The river Hozu invites you to extensive sightseeing from a boat, while the Togetsukyo bridge may be familiar to some from historical Japanese films. Simply beautiful!

Kyoto 794 – the imperial residence

As “Heian-kyo” Kyoto was the second permanent capital of the country since 794. At that time, Japan’s political power essentially originated there, which is why it also served as the imperial capital. When the emperor moved to Tokyo 400 kilometres away in 1185, Kyoto lost its position of power and the slow and gradual decline of the city began. 1568 came with the first Christian place of prayer, Namban-ji, then also the Christian influence to Kyoto. Only in 1580 did the reconstruction of the city begin and the first temples were built within the city – this had previously been strictly forbidden. Kyoto recovered and flourished and was one of the few cities in Japan to be spared from nuclear bombs and air strikes during the Second World War due to its cultural importance.

Kyoto Cultural Center – nearly 1,600 temples and more

Today Kyoto is the best preserved city in the country and is known as the cultural centre of Japan. Inside the city there are about 1,600 Buddhist temples and another 400 Shinto shrines, palaces and gardens. Many of these shrines and temples are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Kyoto” and are therefore particularly protected. This is one of the reasons why many of the country’s most famous buildings are located in Kyoto. The most important sights are in the east, north and west of the city – the majority of the temples are a bit remote in the north and on the surrounding mountain slopes. Every year Kyoto hosts the “Gozan no Okuribi” festival – large fires are lit on the mountain tops in the north whose flames simulate Japanese characters seen from a distance.

Ghostworld & Beacon – how to celebrate Gozan no Okuribi in Kyoto

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tAuVU50pf4

Excessively polite in dialect

In Kyoto dialect is spoken, especially by the older inhabitants of the city. What distinguishes the Kyoto dialect from other language variants of Japanese is its strong historical influence, because here the old courtly culture is reflected in a form that cannot be found anywhere else but within the former capital. That is why the Kyoto dialect is also regarded as the higher variant of the generally regionally widespread Kansai dialect.

The most beautiful buildings in the 11 districts

The city of Kyoto is divided into 11 districts, all of which are worth a visit. – Because in every district there are beautiful temples and shrines and many other attractions and tourist destinations.

Fushimi – the best water of the country

The district of Fushimi is known for its particularly soft and clear water, which is of great importance for sake production. That’s why this is also where sake producer Gekkeikan is based. Also worth seeing are the Fushimi Inari Shrine, Fushimi Castle, Teradaya Inn, Gokogu Shrine and the ruins of Yodo Castle.

Kamigyo – from Imperial Palace to University Campus

The high-quality silk textile Nishijin-Ori has been produced in the district of Kamigyo for centuries. The old architecture of the Imperial Palace as well as various temples and shrines, including the temple of Shokoku-ji and the shrines of Kitano Tenman-gu and Seimei, meet modern structures such as the Imadegawa Campus of Doshisha University.

Kita – golden pavilion and oldest shrine in Japan

Kita belonged to the district of Kamikyo until 1955 and is rich in sights. Here is the Daitoku-ji and the Imamiya Shrine with its famous Yasurai Festival and Japan’s oldest shrine, the Kamo Shrine. There is also the golden pavilion Kinkaku-ji, the mountain Funaokayama and four large universities.

Higashiyama – National Museum Kyoto

The entertainment district of Gion is located in the heart of Higashiyama. There are numerous temples including Kiyomizu-dera, Tofuku-ji, Kennin-ji, Kodai-ji, Imakumano Kannon-ji and Sanjusangen-ji.

Minami – the southern city entrance

Until 1955 the municipality was still part of the Shimogyo district. Minami is located in the south of Kyoto, the only area of the city that is not bordered by mountains. Here is the former southern entrance to the city, Rajomon, as well as the famous temple complex To-Ji, where monk Kukai taught. By the way: Minami is home to the Zainichi, a population group with Korean roots.

Nakagyo – the tourist center of the city

The district of Nakagyo is located in the city centre of Kyoto and is therefore also the hub for administration, consumption, tourism and entertainment. Three of the city’s most famous festivals are held annually in Nakagyo: the Aoi-Matsuri, the Gion-Matsuri and the Jidai-Matsuri. Of particular note in Nakagyo are Nijo-jo Castle, Tokugawa’s former seat of the Shogunate, the Rokaku-do Temple, rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1877, and the Kyoto International Manga Museum.

Nishikyo – the Imperial Katsura Villa

The district of Nishikyo is of particular importance because of the imperial Katsura Villa, which was built over the Katsura river of the same name. The old moss temple Saiho-ji and the Yoshimine-dera are also located here.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gow111KwfM

Sakyo – rice fields and botanical garden

The district of Sakyo is very close to nature. It is the only district of Kyoto that has been able to preserve its rice fields and prevent new development areas and high-rise buildings due to urban planning restrictions. The wood industry has also been a constant in Sakyo for many years. Besides temples and shrines like Ginkaku-ji, Nanzen-ji, Kamo Shrine, Heian-Jingu Shrine, Kurama-dera, Kifune-jinja, Sanzen-ji and Manshuin Temple there is the Imperial Villa Shugakuin and the botanical garden of Kyoto. The Kyoto International Conference Center, in which the famous Kyoto Protocol to the climate protection agreement was adopted, and the Kyoto University for Art and Design are also located here.

Shimogyo – Shopping, Travel, Rivers

Shimogyo is home to the large Kyoto railway station and the city’s largest shopping district at the corner of Shijo Street and Kawaramachi Street. Three rivers flow through the district and the famous Kyoto Tower rises far beyond the city.
Ukyo – Bridge to the Moon

The temple complex Ninna-ji, the Zen temple Ryoan-ji, Daikaku-ji as well as Koryu-ji and the bridge with the mystical name “Bridge to the Moon”, Togetsu-kyo are located in this district. The Kyoto Prefecture University is also located here. By the way: Ukyo is also seen as the centre of the Japanese film industry and is home to one of the two film studios Toeis.

Yamashina – the oldest imperial tomb of Kyoto

Yamashina station is only one stop from Kyoto station in Shimogyo. As a former imperial residence, a number of emperors have of course also been buried in Kyoto. In fact, the oldest imperial tomb in the city, the tomb of Emperor Tenji, together with that of General Sakanoue no Tamuramaro and other important historical figures are located in the Yamashina district. The famous Oishi Shrine is also located here.

University City Kyoto – Studying at the highest level

Due to its status as a university city, Kyoto is home to many young people, but in fact the students are not only city residents and regional residents, they come from all parts of the country to study at one of the approximately 40 universities and colleges in the city. Since the opening of the first Shinkansen line in 1964, Kyoto can also be reached by high-speed trains, which makes commuting much more pleasant. The main station in Shimogyo was completely rebuilt and modernised in 1997, which makes it more attractive to the young population, but in the eyes of many it is too much in contrast to the traditional Kyoto architectural style.

Japan’s Top 5 Universities & Colleges

According to a foreign ranking of Japanese universities and colleges from April 2018, the national universities of Tokyo, also known as Todai, and Kyoto, aka Kyodai, ranked first for the first time together; until now, the national university of the capital was considered Japan’s undefeated top university. In the 2018 global ranking, however, Todai is still one step ahead; with 46th place on the world list of universities, it is 28 places ahead of Kyodai (74th). By the way: the universities of Oxford, Cambrige and Stanford occupy places 1-3 in the worldwide ranking.

The three pillars of Kyoto – Tourism, Tradition & Modernity

1. tourism

Its long-lasting architecture and the many historical sites of Kyoto make the city Japan’s most popular tourist destination. In fact, tourism is the city’s main source of income and the tourist infrastructure is well developed here.

2. traditional handicraft

There are also many small businesses and family businesses dedicated to traditional Japanese crafts, for example Kyoto is famous for its silk manufacture and the production of kimonos, which are often worn here for festive occasions, but also in everyday life. A very special dyeing technique, called Kyo-Yuzen, was passed down from the 17th century and was developed many years ago by Yuzen Miyazaki in Kyoto. Outside Kyoto there are few practitioners, most of them in Kanazawa – but even within the city, Kyo-Yuzen is only used by a few.

3. electronics

The third pillar, besides sake production of course, is electronics. The headquarters of renowned companies such as Nintendo, Murata Eletronics, OMRON, Wacoal, Kyocera and many others are located in Kyoto. Nevertheless, many of the working population have to commute daily to Osaka, 40 km away, since the jobs in the city centre are no longer sufficient.

Eating in Kyoto – a culinary feast for all the senses

Kyoto is also famous for its excellent cuisine. The stylish, often simple dishes focus on mainly vegetable ingredients such as pickled vegetables, called tsukemono. Many vegetables, which are seasonally found in the city’s specialities, come from the immediate vicinity of Kyoto and are known for being somewhat smaller in growth, but also significantly more intense in taste than in the rest of Japan, thus giving Kyoto cuisine a very special touch. By the way: a popular souvenir from Kyoto is the candy Yatsuhashi.
Most poular: Nama Yatsuhashi

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5kMMweVJxQ

Kaiseki Ryori – luxury dinner in several courses

Kaiseki Ryori is a multi-course and often expensive menu whose origins lie in the traditional tea ceremony. In the course of time it enjoyed great popularity at the Imperial Court and became increasingly pompous and extravagant. A variant of Kaiseki Ryori is Kyo Kaiseki, which is primarily based on seasonal vegetables from the Kyoto region.
Shojin Ryori – pleasurable modesty

The Shojin Ryori comes from the abstinent monks in Buddhist temples. The simple dishes consist exclusively of vegetarian ingredients, but are still rich and filling. A popular example of Shoji Ryori is a vegetable broth with tofu, called yudofu.

Obanzai Ryori – Food like Mum

The Obanzai Ryori is originally traditional cooking at home. Typically it consists of several small dishes that are not very complex to prepare. Restaurants that specialize in Kyoto cuisine often create a homely atmosphere to create a sense of home and togetherness among their guests.

Kawayuka – Food above the water

Kawayuka or Kawadoko refers to food in nature. But not somewhere, but on wooden platforms floating above rivers! These platforms are built by restaurants all over Kyoto during the summer season as a kind of terrace over rivers and streams, offering a refreshing alternative to stuffy restaurants and oppressive heat. The culinary district of Pontocho in the city centre is particularly suitable due to its proximity to the Kamogawa River, but also the two mountain villages Kibune and Takao in the mountains north of Kyoto invite you to Kawadoko from May to September – an absolute recommendation!

Streetfood in Kyoto: Yakitori, Okonomiyaki & Dango
