Fashion designer Philipp Plein was born in Munich on February 16, 1978. Alongside the legend Karl Lagerfeld, he is one of the most successful and well-known designers in Germany and it is hard to imagine the fashion industry without him. He has definitely made a name for himself with his unusual pieces, and his pieces are recognizable at first glance!

In 1998, he founded his company International AG, which is now based in Switzerland. Before that, Plein studied law, but he didn’t seem to want to do that in the long term! He started designing furniture and then bags and accessories. In 2003, he was given the opportunity to design the lounge for Moet & Chandon at the German CPD trade fair in Düsseldorf. There he took his chance and sold his accessories, which he designed from old leather, for the first time.

Philipp Plein: As conceited as they always say?

He is known for his many tattoos, his well-trained body and his swanky watch! But is that all he has to offer?

Plein has always been a “dreamer”: he always wanted to aim high and realize his dreams – that was and is his greatest motivation. Many interpret his single-minded attitude as arrogance. Plein explains what you should bear in mind with his “strategy”:

FIV. Hello dear Michael, thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions about yourself and your agency. Maybe you can tell our readers a little bit about yourself first. What has been your career so far and your professional successes? What did you study and why did you choose this industry?

Michael: I studied communications with a focus on marketing and communications and completed training as a business and life coach. I was able to gain leadership experience in the areas of marketing, sales and HR at an early stage and worked in various consumer goods industries, for which I am still grateful today. In addition, I have worked for various TV productions and broadcasters. From casting protagonists to casting presenters, there was a lot involved. During my time in advertising, I had a small online start-up on the side, which worked well, but unfortunately did not bring in any money – my first failure, so to speak. laughs I was able to gain further experience in the field of people and model management and I worked as an independent coach, while in 2013 I founded one of the first talent management agencies with partners, which also covered the digital component in the placement of advertising and talent. In 2020, we parted ways. With mf-mgmt I founded a new agency, which is still specialized in talent management, but has a completely new focus and different content.

Model management: foundation, tips, experiences

FIV: How did you get the idea to start your own business? Was there a specific moment or have you been thinking about starting your own business for a while?

Michael: I started working on the side very early on and tried different things on my own as well. But the decision is generally always based on my convictions. If I’m convinced of something, then I have to implement it and try it out. The content of the agency is the sum of my collected experiences and adventures. Both the positive and the negative.

FIV: You’ve had some experience and you’ve certainly had your ups and downs. What would you recommend to new people in the industry? Do you have any tips you can give us?

Michael: It’s important to stay true to yourself and not sell yourself. The more successful you become, the bigger the tasks and problems become and the harder it is to shape the internal structure in a way that suits everyone. But probably the most important tip is to always try to look at the values of those you work with. Ideally beforehand.

FIV: What was your greatest success so far? What do you always remember fondly and what are you particularly proud of?

Michael: Oha … Over the years there have certainly been a lot of different things that have been successful, but also a lot of things that have not been successful, of course. But I guess my answer is different than you’d expect: Over a period of time, I coached people who had different, deeper issues for free. It was very emotional, honest, and grateful (on both sides). I’m proud of that.

Success or happiness?

FIV: What is more important to you: professional success or happiness? What is your opinion on this?

Michael: My job makes me happy, so I don’t really have to ask myself that question. But since you’re asking it: happiness! Because I know that I live healthier when I am happy. Career success without being happy means “gut wrenching” and at worst, draws health consequences. Especially during my active coaching days, I’ve unfortunately witnessed the consequences all too often in others and it’s not worth it. It is even worse when ego and profile neuroses are added … Both often go hand in hand with the need to want to stand outwardly for professional success and to be recognized (in short “show”). From a lack of social competence to illnesses (physical or psychological), everything can be observed here as a consequence. In my opinion, no one can really want that and yet it happens frequently.

Private life, hobbies & conservation

FIV: Do you have a professional role model? Is there a particular person you look up to or admire professionally?

Michael: I find some personalities exciting and respect them, but I would not speak of role models now. One of these personalities is, for example, the journalist Dirk Steffens. He is constantly campaigning for the protection of species, educating people and working to ensure that this absolutely important issue is enshrined in the German constitution. This because he has recognized that otherwise we will probably get far-reaching problems with food in the future due to our population density. Both for us and for future generations, honestly addressing this issue should be one of the most important tasks.

FIV: Your everyday life can certainly be stressful and quite busy. Do you still have time for your private life? What about hobbies?

Michael: I already work a lot, but I also make sure that I take time off and have time for myself. Admittedly – I spend more time with my job, but that’s okay. Because of the pandemic, I discovered kayaking on the Alster for myself last year. One of my best friends got me to order an inflatable kayak from Amazon. No sooner said than done, we had a lot of fun! I will be doing that again this year. Apart from that, I’m busy with, who would be surprised: species conservation.

FIV: We’d like to know a little more about you as a person. Tell us something about your daily routine. Do you have certain rituals? How do you relax after a stressful day?

Michael: I relax anti-cyclically. This means that I go running early in the morning, do sports and take enough time for a healthy, vegan breakfast with vitamins. Personally, I really can’t start the day any more relaxed than this. I have peace and fresh air in the morning. Body and mind get what they need and so I have enough power until late evening, sometimes even into the night.

Shooting Time, Video Ideas & Talent: The Path to the Perfect TikTok

FIV: On TikTok you inspire your viewers with creative acting videos of you. It’s hard to miss that you have a talent for acting. How did you decide to share your talent on Tik Tok?

Max: Initially, I tried my hand at TikTok first. Of course, I didn’t really know the app at first and tried out a lot of content. Then after a month I got into acting. It was super fun, so I practiced a lot and from then until now, I don’t do anything else. I just implement what I enjoy and like to entertain my audience that way.

FIV: We would also like to know what challenges you face and how much time it takes to create the perfect TikTok video?

Max: That’s really very different and difficult to say exactly. Acting is incredibly easy for me because it’s fun and that’s exactly what I’m into. Shooting time takes me between 20-30 minutes per video. The brainstorming takes more time. My goal is to come across as authentic as possible. Of course I don’t always succeed and I also get inspiration from other artists. But 95% of the content I create is my own content, which comes from my own thoughts and ideas. That’s what often takes a lot of hours, but what I also enjoy so much at the same time.

Werewolf, bad boy or rather jealous ex-boyfriend?

FIV: Although many millions of people use the app TikTok, it has only recently become so popular in Germany. One million people follow you on the platform and the trend is rising. How does this success feel for you and how does it support your acting career?

Max: It’s unbelievably great and impossible to describe. I never thought I would make it this far. I am definitely proud of that. I will be the first German-speaking Actor TikToker who cracks the 1Mio – unimaginable. I never learned professional acting, but with many hours of work I taught myself everything.

FIV: You’ve already posted over 700 TikToks in which you demonstrate your acting skills. Whether as a werewolf, a jealous ex-boyfriend or a teacher, you slip into the most diverse roles and inspire your followers with new ideas every day. We’d like to know which roles you like to play the most on your TikToks and why?

Max: A good but very difficult question. I love all the roles because each of my videos has a purpose. They should give people a cool and loose acting, but more importantly I want to give a message. I think I favor POV’s. Picking a favorite is difficult because I love every facet I embody. Playing the bad boy is easier for me, which is why I’m more into supernatural. It gives me a kind of challenge. If you can play something cool and take the audience into another world, it’s just great feedback and at the same time not so easy. You realize how much work and a lot of thought goes into it, so I love the resulting challenge.

Greatest sense of achievement & future plans

FIV: Social media, especially TikTok can take up a lot of your time. Is the platform your main job, or do you do something else on the side? What has been your biggest success on the app so far?

Max: TikTok is definitely my main occupation. My biggest success was a video that has reached 17 million clicks. Unbelievable! I think what I succeeded in, besides the successful video, is the fact that very few people believed in me and I kept going. It wasn’t until I had 200,000 followers that I made my first video with another TikToker. My account is 100% based on my work and I am very happy and proud to have always stayed true to my line.

FIV: Last but not least, we would like to know how your friends and family support you in your TikTok career? Do you plan to make acting your profession in the future?

Max: I’m lucky that my best friend and my girlfriend are behind me. My dream would be to be able to act on stage or screen in a feature film.

FIV: You now have over 600,000 followers on your TikTok channel – that’s a big success! It’s probably a great feeling when you know that your followers are behind you and follow your TikToks regularly, isn’t it?

Linh: It’s definitely a great feeling to know that so many people follow you and find it exciting and interesting what you produce – I’m very grateful for that.

FIV: Besides your singing, you like to post beauty videos, like transforming into celebrities. Is beauty an integral part of your everyday life? You seem to have a lot of fun getting involved with makeup.

Linh: I like to create new looks, not only in beauty but also in fashion. I get super inspired by other accounts and then implement these looks on my account. It’s so satisfying when you look at the result after work and it looks good.

FIV: What does your everyday life look like? What could you not do without? Do you have a certain routine, that is, when you shoot your videos, for example?

Linh: My daily routine consists of my morning routine, which consists of jogging, exercising, meditating and having a cup of tea. In fact, it’s hard for me to do without my morning routine. Should the case arise that something gets in the way, I’m still a little out of rhythm:)

FIV: How did it actually come about that you started so intensively with TikTok? Was it your plan and dream to live the way you currently do? If not, what was your actual plan?

Linh: It was actually my brother who motivated me to do it. I was only visiting Germany, but since I had just returned from Vietnam and had to go into quarantine afterwards, it actually started. Son had school holidays at that time. So we had all the time in the world and I thought why not. Let’s dance a bit and do our everyday nonsense. Over the months it eventually became a habit and you couldn’t stop. Eight months later, my life has changed 360 degrees.

FIV: The production for your content probably takes a lot of time. Do you do anything else besides your job as a TikToker or is this your main job?

Linh: I used to be a dance teacher and a singer in Vietnam. When I came back to Germany, I started directly with social media and made this my main job.

FIV: As you can easily see on your channel, you love to sing. Do you have any plans for the future as far as singing goes? Or do you just want to keep posting videos on TikTok and Instagram?

Linh: Yes definitely, I want to continue with the music. That’s what my soul lives and burns for. How and when I can not say exactly. Due to the current situation, everything is still a little limited, but hopefully a door will open for me very soon.

FIV: You produce content every day – I don’t imagine it’s easy to always have new ideas for posts on your social media accounts. Do you have role models that inspire you? People or motivations of your own that you keep in mind on a regular basis? If so, what would they be?

Linh: In the beginning, I have to admit, I only produced content that I enjoyed. I paid less attention to who was watching and who wasn’t. In the beginning, I actually only uploaded one video a day or every two days. Then, as I said, it became a habit and I uploaded two to three videos a day, experimenting for the first time. Sometimes it was dance-, fashion-, lifestyle- or singing videos etc. But you always look at the trends in between and see if that’s something for you. I want to stay as authentic as possible, because I don’t want to create an image that I’m not.

FIV: Finally, I have a question for you: Do you have certain things that you would like to achieve?

Linh: I definitely want to increase my reach and am working diligently on it. It’s important to me to have fun and enjoy it and not lose myself in the process. The one thing I definitely want to do and continue to push is the music and perform here. I hope that will work out very soon. Solang I sing in front of the camera:)

Angelina Lilienne: Hotspots in Berlin & Motivation from Community

FIV: You have over 500,00 subscribers on Instagram – the focus on your channel is on beauty, fashion and lifestyle. It’s probably a great feeling when you know that your followers are behind you and like what you post, right?

Angelina: Absolutely! I am incredibly grateful for all the support and encouragement from my community and of course for the interest in my content. This motivates me every day anew to produce inspiring stories and posts.

FIV: You currently live in Berlin. You are probably on the road quite a lot, especially because of your job. Do you have any favorite places to hang out? If so, can you name 3 of your favorite hotspots in the capital?

Angelina: Basically I’m on the road a lot, that’s true. But unfortunately that’s not possible due to the current situation with the Corona pandemic. Nevertheless, I like to spend a lot of time outside, go for a walk, jog or just get a Smoothie To Go. My favourite place to be is Charlottenburg. The Kudamm or Gendarmenmarkt are great for that.

“I think that’s exactly what was the key to my success” – Angelina on unexpected life in the public eye

FIV: How did you actually get started with Instagram so intensely? Was it your plan to live the way you currently do? Instagram puts you in the public eye a lot – yet you try to keep your personal life private as much as you can. Do you ever wish you had a job that wasn’t so public? If so, what would it be?

Angelina: I never expected to be a full-time influencer one day. I also think that was exactly the key to my success. It was totally unexpected and took me completely by surprise. I am super happy to be able to share my everyday life with my amazing community, however, I keep my private life out of it as much as I can. Certain things should just stay private and I’m doing quite well with that.

FIV: You produce content every day – I don’t imagine it’s that easy to always have new ideas for posts. Do you have role models that inspire you? People or your own motivations that you regularly keep in mind? If so, what would they be?

Angelina: It has also happened that I run out of ideas…. Luckily my girls always inspire me with new ideas. Otherwise, my outfits are mostly of my own creation. I have a few profiles that I like to look at and get inspiration from every now and then. But that I follow someone meticulously is not the case. I prefer to do my own thing and that’s also what my community appreciates about my profile.

Angelina’s tips for balanced nutrition & sport: How to achieve your dream body

FIV: On your profile you give – besides your super beautiful style – some insights into your diet and fitness. Can you name 5 things that one should consider for a healthy and balanced diet? Do you have a certain routine, that is, what should not be missing in the morning, at noon and in the evening?

Angelina:

• I eat 3 meals a day and 2 small snacks (fruit, nuts) in between.
• Fluids form the basis of a healthy and balanced diet: 1.5/2 litres per day – water and unsweetened tea are ideal.
• I make sure my intake of unhealthy (!) fats, carbs & sugars is low, as these components are high in calories and low in vitamins, as well as minerals. Good carbs like quinoa, wild rice, sweet potato/potatoes I love to eat. Giving up sugar is a bit difficult for me especially in times of gingerbread…:)
• I avoid dairy products (they slow down the muscle building process).
• In any case, you should not starve, it destroys the metabolism.

FIV: You seem to do sports regularly – as one can easily see from your body! How often do you exercise per week and how do you incorporate the workouts into your daily routine? Can you give us 3 tips on how to best conquer your inner pig?:)

Angelina: I also have phases in which it sometimes runs better and sometimes worse. Currently I’m happy when I manage 3 workouts at home. In good times I go to the gym every day and take 1 day off. When you really want something, you quickly develop the motivation and discipline to follow through with sports activities. And the successes push you even more.

FIV: Finally, I have two questions for you: Do you have any specific plans and goals for the future? If yes, which ones? Do you have things that you absolutely want to achieve?

Angelina: Yes! I would love to launch my own fashion collection. That’s something I’ve been dreaming about forever! – Like really cool everyday pieces. But so far these are just thoughts that haven’t made it to fruition yet. But who knows what else will happen….

FIV: You are a very interesting and inspiring person who has already achieved a lot in her career. During your career you have already appeared in many well-known films and series. Whether on TV in series like “Wilsberg”, “Heiter bis tödlich: Akte Ex” and “SOKO”, on the big screen or in the theatre – you have experienced it all! We would be interested to know what challenges there are in acting and where you like to prove your acting skills the most?

Sarah: In roles that challenge me, such as the outwardly young but inwardly very aged art teacher Melissa, who is searching for the love of life. An extremely exciting role, which I had the pleasure of playing in the play “Moormaid” at the Acola Theatre in London. But also the unassuming inspector Isabell Wolfangel, who doesn’t quite understand irony and sarcasm and to whom people often seem strange, but who is super at remembering numbers and dates and solves many a murder without even realising it. She will be seen next spring in the new episodes of the crime series “Wilsberg”. Or the cheeky bonsai seller Henry, who will realize that life is not perfect, even if all her wishes come true. Henry is the main character of a little indie project I’m planning with my longtime friend and author Sylvia Witt.

FIV: Besides acting, you are also a voice actress. Among other things, you are the voice of American actress and model Emily Ratajkowski, as well as the German voice of Poussey Washington from the series Orange is the New Black. How did it come about that you discovered your passion for voice acting alongside your career as an actress?

Sarah: Through my voice teacher Andrea Aust at drama school. The lessons with her were often my highlight of the day, because we always laughed a lot too! She’s a fantastic voice actress and sparked my love of language. Her workshops and know-how also gave us a great start in the industry. At the beginning, of course, it was still a case of making contacts and introducing myself to the studios. I was able to watch a lot of great speakers, sometimes even for several days at a time, and took away a lot for my own performance in front of the microphone.

Tips & Tricks for a successful acting career

FIV: You show your versatility and acting talent in all your TV and cinema roles. We would like to know from you which role you liked the most among all your films and series? Which role did you identify with the most?

Sarah: I love characters who are far removed from myself. Because that’s when the most exciting part begins, I deal with them and their motivations: Why does this character do what she does? What does she want to achieve? One memorable role for me that I even now dream about from time to time is Hayley, who I played in the theatrical adaptation of “Hard Candy,” the movie of the same name. The sweet naive girl who is in danger of falling into the arms of a pedophile, until it turns out that she is actually the one who set him up. In the end, you wonder which one is crazier.

FIV: Many girls and guys also want to realize their dream as an actor. What are your top 3 tips for a successful acting career? How realistic are the chances of landing a big role on German television?

Sarah: Believe in yourself and think again and again: What is the next step to get closer to your goal. Even with small steps you can get to the big goal. Also: Don’t think much, just do it! My last tip: No matter if you go to acting school or if you are a career changer – there are many ways to become an actor. But never stop learning, because you never stop learning and you can always evolve. Whether you end up getting the roles you dream of often depends on parameters that are out of your control. That’s why it was always important for me to have a plan B.

Social projects, martial arts & lifestyle

FIV: Besides your job as an actress and voice actress you love to do sports. Your greatest passion: martial arts! You are even a black belt holder and won many awards for your skills in karate. What exactly do you like so much about competitive sports and is there a sport you can imagine practicing in the near future?

Sarah: I love the play sparring, the playful fighting. It’s the best way for me to let off steam and clear my head. When I’m sparring I’m always fully in the here and now, because if my mind wanders, I feel it immediately.

FIV: You are also involved in many social projects. You support the NY HARY project, which gives Malagasy school children a home. What motivated you to get involved in this project and what 3 things would you like to change in this world if you could?

Sarah: I had a beautiful childhood and grew up very free. I was a pretty wild child and could always let off steam. My parents supported me where they could and showed me the possibility to realize myself. Unfortunately, that’s not the case for every child and that’s why projects that advocate for children are especially close to my heart. They are the adults of tomorrow and will decide what kind of world this one will eventually become.

I wish there were basic environmental rights that everyone would abide by so that we would promote and protect our habitat instead of exploiting it. Likewise, I wish there was some sort of driver’s license of interaction where everyone learns the basics of communication so that we would be more understanding of each other overall and understand each other better. Lastly, I wish there was a school subject of self-worth in school where we learn how to talk to ourselves internally, how to push ourselves, how to deal with envy and resentment, how to deal with the ups and downs of life without becoming sad, mad or arrogant.

The creation of the fashion label Ted Baker

Ray Kelvin once made a name for himself in 1988 as a shirt specialist. Humor has always been Ray’s greatest strength. The designer also created his fashion then and now according to this motto. This is reflected in the magnificent patterns of his designer pieces and in his store concept at that time. Nowadays, the colorful bags and flowery dresses are what you would imagine under the brand Ted Baker. In the past, Ray was known for something completely different. After his first store offered a laundry service for every shirt he bought, people began to notice him. No Ordinary Designer Label’, they called Ray’s shirt brand. Customers always liked to go to the designer because his personality was part of the business. Ray opened his first store in Glasgow, Scotland, closely followed by King Street, Manchester and the Nottingham Exchange Arcade. Ray also had an eye for quality from the beginning, which is why he showed a great attention to detail. And it was worth it! Although the then 33-year-old had never believed that his label would ever become so famous, he quickly felt his success and became one of the leading lifestyle brands in the UK.

Ted Baker: The ‘No Ordinary Designer Label

But why did Ray christen his fashion label with the name Ted Baker? Ray first heard the name Ted Baker in a conversation. Since he was not sure at the beginning of his label that this would not be a total flop, he decided to keep his own name out of the brand. The designer saw this name as his personal, made-up alter-ego and thought it was appropriate. And all this came about during a fishing trip!

An idea becomes a success story

Ray’s unique marketing strategy

Advertising via television or posters? Ted Baker used nothing of the sort to promote his products. Word of mouth, that was the key to Ray’s marketing strategy. So there were original concepts and giveaways that made people aware of Ted Baker. Since this strategy was not common at that time, the brand name spread rapidly. The awarding of “Paxo Stuffing” at Christmas, chocolate bunnies at Easter or in 2006 special World Cup soccer tickets ensured Ted Baker’s success. Ray Kelvin’s resignation after harassment allegations

Hugs and ear massages: Many of his employees accused this behavior in 2019. CEO Ray Kelvin is said to have hugged employees against their will, as well as urged them to sit on his knees and have their ears massaged.  The 62-year-old did not confirm these accusations. Despite all of this, he resigned from his position as CEO with immediate effect, after numerous media outlets demanded Ray’s resignation. COO Lindsay Page, is to continue to run the company in his place. But what exactly is the truth of the accusations?

“I’ve decided it’s the right step to leave Ted to allow the company to focus on being the outstanding brand it is. So it can face 2019 with fresh energy and a new spirit”.

Ray Kelvin has always been a mystery. At official photo events, the inventor of the fashion label liked to keep a hat or even a shoe in front of his face to stay in the background as much as possible. There are also no interviews with the designer, which underlines his anonymity. And no wonder, hardly anyone knows that behind the luxury brand hides this somewhat quirky guy. His sense of humor also shaped his success story, but in the end he was accused of harassment. According to him, hugs have probably always been part of the corporate culture. But they were never imposed, he says.

What does the brand’s future look like?

After inventor Ray Kelvin left the company, he stayed out of the spotlight for a while. Lindsay Page, the company’s new CEO, now has power over the fashion label. But what happens to the brand now? Shortly after the accusations about Ray’s misconduct, the company’s stock fell sharply. The share price already dropped from GBP 32 (EUR 35.4) per share in March 2019 to GBP 18 (EUR 19.9). At the close of trading, the value was below GBP 15 (EUR 16.6). However, the figures recovered again after the scandal was slowly forgotten.
