The hectic everyday life of a model with Serlina Hohmann

Serlina Hohmann successfuly took second place in the 12th season of GNTM in 2017 and has proudly described herself as “busy & booked” in the industry ever since. She takes her followers with her on Instagram and shows them her exciting everyday life as a model, her favorite meals and the best way to stay in shape. In this interview, the successful model tells us about her love for New York and what motivates her to keep stepping in front of the camera.

Time in Tel Aviv and life in New York

FIV: Hello Serlina, you spent a lot of time abroad, including a few years in Tel Aviv – what was your life like there?

Serlina: Tel Aviv won my heart very quickly. I originally come from the beautiful, but also very quiet and sedate city of Koblenz. Life in Tel Aviv couldn’t be more contrasting. The city is loud, colorful, chaotic and hot. And yet, or perhaps precisely because of this, it completely captivated me. This city really is bursting at the seams with vibrancy and warmth. I know it’s often said about New York – but Tel Aviv is REALLY a city that never sleeps. I lived there for most of my 20s and loved it. The beach, the sun, the people, the countless restaurants, bars and cafes – I miss it so much.

FIV: We believe you! In the meantime, you often commute to New York – how would you describe the city in three words and what do you particularly like there?

Serlina: Inspiring, lively and colorful. For me, there’s something totally magical about NYC. I actually went there for the first time last year and was so impressed by the energy of the city. I loved just walking around the streets for hours and taking it all in. There is just so much to see there!

Everyday life of a model and career dreams

FIV: How can someone who wants to become a model imagine a typical day in the life of a model?

Serlina: There is actually no such thing as a typical day. Every day is different. There are months when I travel an incredible amount, fly a lot, live out of a suitcase all the time and am in a different city every week. These are the exciting months, but also the more stressful ones. I’m constantly meeting new people, have long shooting days and often don’t get much sleep. This is followed by quieter months in which I work from home a lot, create my own routine and prepare myself mentally and physically for the next shoot. This time then consists mainly of emails, e-castings and fitness.

FIV: Is there an absolute dream brand that you would absolutely love to work with one day or has this already happened in your career?

Serlina: I don’t have a specific brand in mind. But ever since I started modeling, I’ve always had two dreams in the back of my mind. One is that I would love to be booked for a really cool perfume TV campaign. I don’t know why. But I’ve always been fascinated by those super elaborate and elegant perfume commercials on TV. My second dream would be to make it onto the cover of a big magazine.

FIV: What exactly excites you most about modeling and makes you want to step in front of the camera again and again?

Serlina: I actually enjoy the “everyday life” on set the most. With every job, I meet a new team, get to know new life stories and just see so much creativity and talent. Although you don’t know each other at first, you get to know each other very quickly and somehow bond very quickly. When I sit in the make-up chair in the morning, an hour later the stylists and I have already told each other our entire life stories. I always find it so refreshing to get to know so many new ways of thinking and living and I have the feeling that the people on set in particular have really broadened my horizons in recent years.

Care routine and fitness

FIV: As a model, you are often exposed to a lot of make-up looks and styling – do you have a skincare routine for your skin?

Serlina: My motto is definitely “less is more”. It was a great learning experience for me that expensive doesn’t always mean better and that you don’t have to follow every trend and test new products every month. This usually only stresses and overwhelms the skin. My tip is: find a few products for cleansing, care and sun protection that you tolerate well. And then stick with it!

FIV: Sport is certainly also firmly integrated into your everyday life – what is your go-to routine to stay fit?
Serlina: For me, sport is so much more than fitness. Nowhere else do I relieve stress and switch off as well as when I’m doing sport. I actually exercise every day. My fitness routine is usually a mixture of Pilates, running and yoga. On rest days, I prefer to go for a walk.

FIV: That’s really exciting, with so much variety it rarely gets boring. We wish you continued success with everything!

Jacky Wruck took the plunge in her career by winning the 15th season of GNTM, and with great success, as she was able to turn this dream into a sustainable career. As a content creator on Instagram, she shares her beautiful snapshots as well as insights into her everyday life, including her sports and skiing routine, but also how she is passionate about animal welfare and spends time with her own horses. In the interview, Jacky tells us more about her life in the public eye, tips for anyone dreaming of becoming a model and her TV appearance in high diving.

GNTM, acting and the modeling world

FIV: Tell me Jacky, when did you actually realize that you wanted to become a model, or was it always your dream? Was it a moment or a development over the years?

Jacky: It’s been a dream of mine to be in front of the camera professionally for as long as I can remember.

I always loved fashion as a child, getting changed four times a day, standing in front of every camera or experimenting with nail polish. In fact, being in front of the camera was always a bit more my thing than the catwalk, which I nevertheless learned to love.

And then it was up to me: at the end of my youth, would I dare to pursue the courageous dream or go down the path of working with animals, which also had its great appeal. But for now, I wanted and still want to be brave and try something that some people advise against.

FIV: GNTM was a decisive stage in your life – tell me, what’s Heidi like behind the scenes, did you have much contact with her?

Jacky: We had regular contact with Heidi, but not all the time or “a lot”. Nevertheless, I had the opportunity to get to know Heidi. As a person and not just as a model and entertainer.

It’s nice to realize every time that we are all cut from a similar cloth. We all have this place that shapes our private lives. Heidi placed a lot of emphasis on this. She had often mentioned that it was important to protect your private life and spend as much time as possible with your loved ones. To be there. To exist as a person and not just as a public figure.

FIV: Is there anything that surprised you in the real fashion world or that you didn’t expect during your time on GNTM?

Jacky: Nothing really surprised me. I was mentally prepared for a few things, but it’s still something completely different when you experience everything live. This statement refers to both the good and the bad sides of the industry.

FIV: You have also ventured into the world of acting – how is that similar to modeling, if you can compare it at all?

Jacky: There are parallels, but the differences definitely outweigh the differences. Acting is a completely different craft and explores different artistic themes. A very exciting topic, if you ask me.

High diving experiences & veterinary practice memories

FIV: You were also recently seen on the RTL high diving competition – how did you like that?

Jacky: I love challenges, learning new skills and meeting new people whose stories inspire me. The high dive was one of those extreme experiences. I would have liked to have presented other jumps, but life is only sometimes a concert of wishes. I really surpassed myself during this time and am already looking forward to the next challenges.

FIV: Do you miss the time when you worked at your parents’ veterinary practice and if so, what?

Jacky: No, I don’t miss that time. Sometimes I look back melancholically on the time when I wasn’t in the public eye, because the pressure – which I naturally put on myself – didn’t exist in that way. I am grateful for the experiences I had in this important profession as a veterinary assistant, but I am currently experiencing a different phase of my life – for which I am just as grateful in a different way.

After Vivien became the first plus-size model to win in 2023 (you can watch the video of the final below), the upcoming 19th season of the show promises to be even more diverse. The casting is open to all genders for the first time, and height or weight no longer play a role. Filming is already in full swing.

There is also particular excitement about contestant Tracy from the last season, who is getting a second chance. The start date has already been set: the show kicks off on February 15, 2024 at 8.15 pm on ProSieben and Joyn. Heidi Klum sent all GNTM fans into a frenzy when she released the first exclusive glimpse of the eagerly awaited 19th season of “Germany’s Next Topmodel” before Christmas! The model boss herself unveiled the exciting first trailer on her Instagram account, getting fans’ anticipation to the max.

The trailer itself is a visual masterpiece and perfectly captures the magic of GNTM 2024. In an impressive monochrome look, Heidi Klum poses in front of the camera with cool sunglasses and shows that she is still the undisputed queen of the catwalk.

The exciting thing, however, is that the trailer not only shows the female contestants, but also provides a glimpse of the male models for the upcoming season for the first time. However, the identity of the candidates still remains a secret, as their faces are cleverly concealed in the silhouettes. This revelation promises an exciting and diverse 19th season of GNTM!

Around 20,000 young girls apply for GNTM every year. From that moment on, the jury sorts them out.

1. Who would have the best chances in the fashion industry?
2. Who fulfills the tasks best?
3. Who is undergoing the strongest development?

The jury uses criteria like these to decide who stays on the casting show and who has to leave. But that doesn’t mean that the average 2.38 million viewers have to be of the same opinion. There are countless candidates who have become successful on the casting show even without reaching first place. Whether it was someone else who saw the talent in the GNTM contestant or whether she fought her way to the top herself, there are various examples. Sarina Nowak: Curvy Model Idol

There are an infinite number of beautiful women in this world. But only a few fit the measurements of the perfect catwalk model. For a girl to be perfect for modeling, she should ideally be between 15 and 18 years old and her body proportions should be around 84 (bust) / 60 (waist) / 89 (hips). However, it is not always the case that every girl is born slim. Girls who have problems maintaining such a weight feel pressured by such guidelines and end up with anorexia or bulimia. FIV: Why did you apply for GNTM? Was it always your dream to take part in this format? What motivated you to take part?

Dascha: I’ve always wanted to take part in GNTM. Ever since I was little, I wanted to leave a footprint. And I managed to do that.

FIV: You’ve come quite far now. How do you think you stand out from other models and what makes you special as a model?

Dasha: I am different because I reflect reality. I show that it’s normal to have a bit of flab or stretch marks. No one is perfect.

FIV: How did your environment, your family and friends, react to your participation in GNTM? Were you supported right from the start or was there criticism?

Dasha: I was supported from all sides right from the start.

Modeling industry: Dasha’s life as a model & more

Dasha has always wanted to be a model and has always aspired to apply for GNTM one day. Especially as a beginner and newcomer to the industry, it’s not always easy and you have to adapt. We spoke to Dascha about her biggest role model and her dream job. She also told us how best to present yourself to a client and what to look out for, especially as a newcomer.

Beginnings, dream jobs & tips for newcomers: What is there to know?

FIV: Did you always want to be a model or did you have a different career aspiration? What was your dream job when you were a child?

Dasha: I wanted to be either a model or a policewoman.

FIV: Do you have a role model? Especially in the modeling business/ in the fashion world and why is it exactly this person? What inspires you most about this person?

Dasha: My biggest role model is my mom. She is so strong and funny and has the most beautiful character.

FIV: What does a model’s working day look like? Tell us about a typical day for you. When does it start and how do you start the day? What tasks do you have to do and when do you finish work?

Dascha: It’s difficult to say because I’m still “new” to the business.

FIV: What would be your dream job as a model? Is there a particular client you would like to work for or is there a particular show you would like to appear in?

Dasha: I want to work with those who also represent me.

FIV: In your opinion, what qualities are particularly important for a model? Do you have any tips for newcomers? What should they look out for?

Dasha: You shouldn’t complain. I wouldn’t put on airs and graces. We’re all just people, whether we’re celebrities or not. That’s why you should respect everyone.

Dasha in private: her best qualities & goals for the future

Throughout the show, we got to know Dasha as a very open and particularly cheerful and outgoing person. You can tell that she is good with people and can also sell herself well. These are very important qualities for a model, especially at castings. Even after the show, Dascha sees herself at the beginning of her career and has big goals in this business!

Why we will be hearing a lot more from Dasha

FIV: Tell our readers something about yourself. For example, what are your best and worst qualities? Do you have a certain habit that bothers or annoys you?

Dasha: Well, I’m a very kind person. I always listen to others and am always there for them. I’m down-to-earth and I’ll always stay that way.

FIV: What goals have you set yourself for the future? Where would you like to be in a few years, both professionally and privately?

Dasha: I definitely want to make it big. I want to continue to be a fly-by and leave even more footprints

Romy talks about her life after GNTM

FIV: Hello Romy, it’s nice that the interview worked out. You have already experienced a lot in your life. You took part in the 16th season of Germany’s next Topmodel in 2021. Since then, you’ve been a successful model and active on social media. How has your life changed since you took part in GNTM?

Romy: I wouldn’t call myself a big, successful model at all, because I’m not a full-time model at the moment, but I’m concentrating on my internship and my future career.
I’m concentrating on my studies. Nevertheless, a lot has changed in my life since my participation in GNTM.

Finding friends has been difficult since GNTM

Romy: It has become more difficult to make real friends, because everyone who meets me already has a preconceived opinion of me, whether positive or negative. I meet a lot of people and I get recognized on almost every street, I like that. I love my fans and spend super happy time with them, even if it’s mostly unfortunately only very short and only possible from a distance, due to our current situation of course.

Going out alone is difficult for Romy

Romy: Unfortunately, I can no longer walk through my village alone, as there have already been cases where I have been secretly followed home or my neighborhood has been scouted. Basically, one lives a bit more restricted than before. It doesn’t matter anymore how embarrassing you act in public because everyone knows you. And it doesn’t matter anymore if and how you express yourself in public. I’m very often afraid of disappointing my fans or doing something wrong by not being active enough in social media, for example.

Romy is endlessly grateful for her life

Romy: I have a lot to do and in the last few months I could rarely be at home, right now it is a bit quieter because of Christmas, which also gives me the opportunity to spend more time with my family. But, and this is the most important thing for me, I love every little change, even the restrictions, because I would never undo the time and I am endlessly grateful for every single person who follows my story, wants to see me and likes what I do.

Romy gives tips for aspiring GNTM contestants

FIV: The new season of GNTM starts soon. And you certainly have tips in store for the aspiring candidates?

Romy: The only tip I would give to a candidate would be to just always be yourself. You shouldn’t try to play any role in such a show or behave differently than usual, because for me personally that would be like lying to the people in front of the TV and also to Heidi Klum. I would say: You are perfect the way you are and this show wouldn’t want you if you were different!

Has modeling always been Romy’s dream?

FIV: Was modeling always your career aspiration or did you want to do something else?

Romy: It was always a huge dream of mine to take part in Germanys Next Topmodel. However, I never knew if I was even remotely good enough for it, which is why I never actually considered modeling before.

Social media pressure – how best to deal with it

Many people, especially young women struggle with unrealistic beauty ideals and identity issues they see on social media. Many have developed serious mental health issues, identity problems and a false self-perception to mimic the beauty standards that are simply unattainable. We asked Romy about her opinion and you can find her answers here.

“You put pressure on yourself to look perfect”.

FIV: You are in the public eye and are active on social media as a social media personality. How great is the pressure in the business to always be “perfect”? What’s the best way to deal with it?

Romy: The pressure to always be perfect is put on you by the big celebrities and yourself by constantly seeing perfect photos in perfect places with perfect people, outfits and scenarios. Personally, of course, I also make sure that my photos and videos are interesting. But I also like to show an “imperfect” side of me. We are all human beings. People who usually have a stressful everyday life, come home and want to relax. Since I personally prefer to look at funny things or really exciting facts that do not make me envious of huge mansions or beautiful front gardens.

Romy focuses on funny content

That’s why I usually post rather funny content, I also like to be without makeup or fresh out of the shower with wet hair. I also make it a point to let my fans know how much they mean to me, which is why I often put sayings in my status that emphasize that and remind everyone that you are perfect the way you are. Even without a big mansion and huge success.

Participation in The Voice of Germany

FIV: Besides GNTM, you also participated in the Voice of Germany. Do you want to pursue your career as a musician?

Romy: I’ve been a musician for over 15 years and of course I want to continue pursuing a career as a musician. However, the most important thing for me is to first study and get a good degree, because as a freelance musician/artist, as you know, you live very dangerously.

Future dream: Successful music career

Romy: Right now I would like to just sing covers on YouTube and write my own songs to express myself and my feelings. That’s what I will do for the rest of my life. If something bigger should come out of it, that would be wonderful of course and also the fulfillment of a huge dream, but time will bring that.

Outlook: Romy studies in the future

FIV: Finally, a short look into the future, we are curious what you have planned in the near future: Do you have big plans like a move or something similar or is there something special coming up? Give us a little teaser of what your fans and followers can look forward to in the near future!

Romy: In the near future, I’ll be doing an internship, because I’d like to study. When, where, what and how I keep secret, because of privacy.

Will Romy soon release her first album?

Romy: However, I’m just starting to sing and I can reveal that I’m currently working on 4 own songs and constantly something new comes to it. They are different from the song I have already published and go in the direction of ballads. On this and on other, different posts from my life and my everyday life, as well as now and then a few interesting collaborations, my fans and followers can look forward in any case and continue to be excited!

Getting started in modeling – applications & castings

Many girls dream of becoming models, but not everyone knows how to get a foothold in the industry. Before you go on the road and run from casting to casting, you have to apply and hope that you find the right agency that sees in you the potential to train the young girls and then to market.

Adelina applied at the age of 17 to many agencies in Germany and sent her pictures online on the off chance. Of course, the requirements for being a model are more than just luck, in addition to the right height and appropriate dimensions, you must also have charisma or what most call that certain something.

She received her first acceptance from CM Models, who trained Adelina for over 2 years with shoots and assignments like at Fashion Week in Berlin.

Then she was ready to extend her jobs offers to across the wide ocean.

School and modelling – is that possible?

A question that interests not only the models, but especially concerned parents. A modelling career starts pretty young, so it clashes with your school career. I asked Adelina how it is possible to reconcile both, a good school education and modeling. The answer of the graduated high school student was quite clear: It is really doable! Of course, she had to take a leave of absence for some shoots, but still she didn’t neglect school. She graduated from high school and mainly had experiences within Germany during her school time.

After finishing school she started her stays abroad. Her first trip went straight to Asia, Shanghai, where she landed several shoots and jobs. The last trip was to the fashion capital Paris, where she even made it on the cover of a fashion magazine. More about that later!

My personal highlight – Shanghai, Paris & Berlin

Within 2 years, Adelina has not only been able to pick up a lot of modeling knowledge, but has also been able to see large parts of the world. Some of her coolest assignments include the Fashion Weeks in Shanghai and Berlin, as well as her current shoot for the cover of a French fashion magazine!

For herself it was a real culture shock at first, the first time in Asia and all alone! But the experience was indescribable and Adelina also did very well. In Asia the focus is very much on “diversity”, there the European standards like height and measurements are not the most important thing. They don’t ask for the typical beautiful. It’s much more about special characteristics. So it happened that 1.65 m models were with her at castings. Something that would be unimaginable in Europe.

Nevertheless, Paris was just as much a highlight for the young model. It is the dream of all models to shoot in the fashion capital, not to mention the cover of a Parisian fashion magazine. She still finds it hard to put all the experiences and emotions into words. Directly in the first week she got the job. An overwhelming and at the same time exciting feeling. A big difference to Shanghai, but also there she had the complete support from the agency. Many models are very scared at the beginning and worry that they will be alone or have to work under strict observation. The agency in Paris offered a bit of home with its relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Paris Cover – Emotions

“How does it feel to see yourself on the cover of a prestigious magazine?” was my personal highlight of the interview. Finding yourself in the corner newsstand at 19 is not only an accomplishment for your modeling career, but also a completely new feeling. Before, you walk in fashion shows and fashion weeks, but the audience is limited to fashionistas, designers and photographers. Now you’re on the shelves of dozens of newsstands and supermarkets, which means you’re seen everywhere. Whether it’s from teens interested in the week’s beauty tips or the businessman who wanted to give his car a quick fill-up. The reach is different.

When she found out her photos were used, she didn’t know she made the cover. With astonishment and a big grin she took 6-7 pieces for her family, friends and agencies. At first the kiosk woman was confused, but when she recognized Adelina she was happy and congratulated her.

Fashion Week – Berlin, Shanghai & Beijing

The first show was in cooperation with CM Models in Berlin. Others followed in Shanghai, Beijing, Peking. They were two completely different worlds in terms of fashion, feeling and styling. But in both neither excitement nor adrenaline was missing! It is an indescribable feeling to walk in front of the audience, the adrenaline rises, you have to be able to hide it well that now so many and especially so important people are watching you.

That’s also the reason why Adelina prefers catwalks for shoots. At the shoot it is of course always a new experience and exciting, but the atmosphere is more relaxed, mistakes are allowed and it’s not bad if the photographer gives tips for better poses. In the fashion shows on the catwalk, everything has to go perfectly and on the first try.

Plans for the future – modelling & studies

Adelina is still in her year of break, after graduating from high school the year was dedicated to modeling and traveling, yet she wants to enroll in college for the upcoming winter semester. Her plan is not directly related to modeling. She wants to study International Management, but doesn’t want to give up modeling. During the semester break, which is 1-2 months, she wants to model abroad. In the meantime, her assignments are limited to shoots and jobs in Germany. But she is sure that it is possible to combine both. Unlike in school, there is no compulsory attendance and at the time it also fit wonderfully.

She still has time until university starts and she uses it as much as possible for shoots and jobs.

3 tips for beginners

When you start so young, it’s hard to know everything right away. It’s normal that in hindsight you would do things differently. It was important for me to know from Adelina what she would recommend to her younger self with her current experience. She gave me three ultimate tips that would not only help her former self, but young girls and guys now who want to become models.

1. Work on self-confidence
2. Don’t put up with everything
3. Not pretending to please others

“I would tell myself that you have to have a lot of self-confidence from within yourself for the profession. No one should always conform to everything society tells you to do. It’s important to do your thing because only then do you feel more liberated and comfortable. If you try to please everyone else, you won’t be happy. I don’t fit into the typical mold of society either, but being true to myself fulfills me. I would give that to others along the way!”

The perfect look – Be yourself

Fittingly, I had to go into her particular look. Shaved hair on a woman is not only a brave and cool look, but it also attracts a lot of attention, right? I got a cool story directly from China. There, European looks are of course always a phenomenon and it is normal that bright blue-eyed people are always photographed, because this is very different from the norm and is a beauty ideal in the Asian region. Adding short hair was the ultimate trigger for a group of Asians to photograph Adelina on the street.

But even in Germany she gets a lot of looks with her smart look. At the beginning she noticed that very strongly, today she fades it out. For many people the look is hard to classify, that’s how she explains the stares. Nonetheless, she gets a lot of positive feedback, especially on online platforms like Instagram. She is often asked how it came to shaving off her hair and many want to follow her in this step, but have reservations or too little courage. Adelina not only serves as an inspiration, but encourages others to do what their feelings tell them to do.

Elizabeth Rose – Founding of evolve model agency & work ethics of a model manager

FIV: Until 2018, you held a high position in prestigious agencies. Why did you decide to start your own boutique agency “evolve” in 2018?

Elizabeth: I decided to focus on a smaller number of people and do a more thorough job with the select models I represent. I really enjoyed working at the larger agencies, but it was time for a change.

FIV: As a modeling agency, your daily workflow is not seen by many people other than your agents and your models. How can we imagine a typical day at your agency?

Elizabeth: The life of a model agent is 24/7. As someone once said to me, you can work to live or live to work. I would say 100 percent of all agents choose to live to work. Emails come in from all over the world during the night, so the first thing I do when I wake up is check and respond to emails. When I’m in the office in the morning, I usually have a model come in to do actual polos and videos. Elizabeth: It’s widely known that female models get paid more than male models, and that’s something I’ve tried to change in my career. I would say that I chose to work with male models because I think they are easier to manage, but I think the female agents out there reading this would disagree!!!!

FIV: Many young talents have difficulties finding the right agency. What should a newcomer consider when looking for a suitable model agency?

Elizabeth: The most important factor when joining an agency is the relationship between model and booker. If you don’t feel that you “click” with your booker, you are much less likely to have a successful career. My advice would be to go with the agency that feels right. Trust your gut instinct. Don’t be blinded by a big brand name.

How to become a model – editorials / test shootings

FIV: What does a first model interview usually look like? How should an applicant appear? (outwardly & character wise)

Elisabeth: The model interview can go quite fast, so you have a very short time to make an impression. The best advice is to be yourself. It can be a scary experience, so try to relax. I would say to be successful in the fashion industry, it’s 80 percent personality and only 20 percent looks. There are a lot of good looking people out there. You have to have that certain something to stand out from the crowd.

FIV: Young people who want to become models often ask us what the difference is between editorials / test shoots and bookings. Explain what a test shoot is? What is especially important in a test shoot?

Elisabeth: A test shoot is when an agency sends a model to see how the model shoots. You can have a beautiful boy or girl who doesn’t come across so well on camera…in the same case you can have a pretty average looking boy or girl who looks magical on film.
