Regular store events make the store a true oasis for fashion lovers and creative minds. Influencers and fashionistas often organize closet sales in the boutique. During my exploration tour at Berlin Fashion Week, the boutique even served as the venue for an exclusive model casting in collaboration with the renowned model agency CM Models.

But what makes it special is not just the fashion itself, but also the unconventional opening hours: The boutique only opens its doors three days a week, for four hours at a time, to welcome fashion enthusiasts. Donna Karan: Professional career

At the age of just 14, the New Yorker dropped out of school and began working in a boutique in New York. Here she was able to build up valuable contacts that eventually earned her admission to the Pearson School of Design. However, she also dropped out of the course.

After working as a summer temp at women’s fashion brand Anna Klein, she was first promoted to assistant designer. Finally, in 1971, she was appointed associate designer. In 1982, she created the second line Anne Klein II. After the death of the company’s founder Anne Klein in 1974, Karan remained with the company for another 10 years, taking over with her colleague Louis Deli’Olio.

Foundation of Donna Karan New York

After her divorce in 1978, the then 34-year-old married the sculptor Stephan Weiss. In the same year she presented her first collection and the enthusiasm was great. The Council of Fashion Designers of America even named her designer of the year.

With seven garments to success

Their fashion went in the direction of sportswear, or as it is called in the industry “American look”. All the pieces in the collection came in different sizes and could be combined with each other. In total, the collection included seven different pieces: a bodysuit, a blouse, a coat, a skirt, a pair of pants and “something fancy”, which in this case was a bodysuit made of tricot fabric.

Small Sizes & Feminine Cuts

It quickly became popular, especially among women. At the time of the 80s, women who wanted to gain a foothold in the working world often had to resort to male business clothing in smaller sizes. Karan served the corresponding interests of your female clientele with her collection and offered feminine cuts to women who were entering the working world of men.

After the success of her main collection, Karan introduced the more affordable label DKNY as a bridge line at the end of the 80s. With this brand she wanted to win over younger people for whom the fashion of the Donna Karan New York label was not right. Her daughter Gabby is said to have served as her inspiration.

DKNY perfume collection: classic fragrances

In 1992, Karan’s company Donna Karan Beauty launched its first perfume under the name Donna Karan New York. Her husband Stephen Weiss was responsible for both the creation of the fragrance and the design of the bottle. In the following years, numerous fragrances were introduced, many of which are still classics in the perfume industry, for example the DKNY perfume “DKNY Be Delicious”.

In the music scene, the city of New York has been honored many times by songs like Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” or Alicia Key’s “Empire State of Mind”. The DKNY perfume Be Delicious is the olfactory embodiment of the city that never sleeps. “Take a bite out of life” is the perfume’s motto. The DKNY perf ume in its apple-shaped bottle brings to life the vision of the all-enabling Big Apple and makes everyone’s mouth water with its pleasantly fresh and fruity composition.

Other milestones and retreat of the designer

In 1993, the native New Yorker also launched the brands Donna Karan New York Menswaer, Donna Karan Shoes and Donna Karan Intimates. In the same year, the first DKNY flagship store and collection boutique were opened in London. From here on, their success grew steadily. With each passing year, new collections, stores and bestsellers were added.
In 1997, the designer finally withdrew from the operational business. Nevertheless, she remained on the board and continued to oversee the various collections.

Sale of the company to LVMH

In 2001, Donna Karan sold her company to the LVMH luxury group for a total of $643 million. Despite the sale of her company, she agreed to continue as a designer for the brand. After her husband died of cancer, Karan retired for a while.

Supervisor for DKNY

She set up a showroom in her husband’s former studio and founded her Urban Zen Foundation initiative there, which was dedicated to fighting cancer, among other things. From then on, the designer no longer created her collections herself, but acted as a supervisor. This ensured that the individual models in the collections did not lose their typical “Donna Karan style”.

Focus on Donna Karan’s Foundation

Some 15 years later, LVMH announced that Donna Karan was stepping down from her position as chief designer after 31 years to focus on her foundation. In an interview with W Magazine, she said, “The world is just crazy right now, and I think it’s our personal responsibility to do something about it.”

The couple Susie Russell and Doug Tompkins founded the fashion brand Esprit in 1968, five years after their wedding. Through advertising campaigns in which Esprit draws attention to social problems and donations to charitable causes, the brand has shown its commitment to important issues for years. Especially in the area of sustainability, however, the brand goes a step further and relies on Concious Fashion, which means for Esprit pays attention to social and ecological aspects in the production of their clothes. But also through limited actions, such as the collection with the designers Craig and Karl, to stand up for the rights of the LGBTQ community, the brand manages to make political statements. In doing so, Esprit focused on the message of love and equality. For International Women’s Day, Esprit is also campaigning for the rights and equality of women worldwide with T-shirts.

Esprit’s logo was designed by John Casado, who is considered one of the most talented art directors of his time. He decided to create a colorful eye-catching logo for the brand and at first he couldn’t convince the boss of Esprit with his design. But when Doug Tompkins asked him to suggest other designs and he still stuck to his first attempt, he finally convinced Doug with his persistence. So that’s how the logo was born, which is now known to the whole world and which, with its colorful bright letters, perfectly fits the Esprit brand.

Balenciaga has had a long career of changing designers and lines of the brand. The journey from a prestigious couture house in the 50s to the streetwear label it is today hasn’t always been easy. Spain and Paris: founding years and couture

Highest tailoring art and noblest haute couture fashion – that’s what fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga stands for. The “Balenciaga” company he founded in 1917 was initially known as a small tailor’s studio in San Sebastián, Spain. The native Spaniard not only understood the fashion of the time but also something about business and quickly opened more boutiques.

When the Spanish Civil War broke out, he moved to Paris, where he presented his first couture collection to the Parisian elite in the 1930s. This was received with great enthusiasm and Cristóbal Balenciaga rose to the top of Parisian fashion designers. He managed to make his expensive creations known in America, France and England in only a short time and offered his collections for sale in the big and famous department stores there.

His first boutique in Paris also boomed. At just over 40, Balenciaga was already considered one of the most influential and successful people on the fashion scene. He lived for his haute couture creations and dressed celebrities and stars from all over the world. Grace Kelly and Marlene Dietrich were among his regular customers.

The 50s and 60s were the golden age for the house of Balenciaga and the founder himself often worked in close collaboration with Hubert de Givenchy. Also the staff of the Air France airline could be happy about high-quality couture uniforms at the end of the 60s, with which they were equipped by Balenciaga himself.

Despite the enormous success of the house up to this point, Cristóbal Balenciaga gave up his work as a designer in the same year and closed all his boutiques. The reason for this was the turnaround in fashion, which caused the change from haute couture to prêt-à-porter fashion, with which Balenciaga could not identify.

New beginning: Prêt- a- Porter and street style

After Cristóbal Balenciaga’s death, the Balenciaga brand did not reappear on the fashion scene until 1987. The Prêt- a- Porter line for women was further expanded under various designers and major customers such as airlines or banks were equipped with uniforms.

Ten years later, a new face appeared on the scene who was supposed to help Balenciaga regain its momentum and shine. And Nicolas Ghesquière did just that. Under him, the house got back the glamour of the 50s. In addition to his futuristic and self-confident models, the designer was strongly oriented towards the designs of the founder. He understood the spirit of the Spanish fashion designer like no other and was thus able to afford new experiments with form and fabric.

In the early 2000s Nicolas Ghesquière introduced a number of bags, all of which became box office hits for the label. The first menswear collection followed immediately in 2002. Ten years later Nicolas Ghesquière left due to a legal dispute and was replaced by Alexander Wang until 2015.

Today, Balenciaga is not only popular in elite circles, but also among the youth. The brand has developed into a real street style brand with the introduction of Vetements designer Demna Gvasalia – Cristóbal Balenciaga would probably turn over in his grave. In 2016, the menswear collection under the young designer was honored for the first time in the form of a fashion show, as this was otherwise only presented digitally.

Balenciaga had suddenly become a brand for everyone. Away from the exquisitely chosen customers to the street. Which of course means nothing bad. The house has made a name for itself throughout its history and nowadays makes a handsome turnover of up to 1.025 billion US dollars.

Although the house’s fragrance line was introduced by Cristóbal Balenciaga himself back in 1947, it is now only a small part of the company. The fragrance “Quadrille”, introduced in 1955, was the scent of the fashion world for a long time.

After Balenciaga’s retirement from the fashion world, his heirs sold the perfume business to a pharmaceutical company, which expanded it until 1986. Today, the fragrance “Florabotanica”, introduced in 2012, is very popular.

How to recognize narrow feet

You probably already know intuitively that your feet are narrow. After all, shoes are often too wide for you. But you can also measure your shoe width very precisely.
