You can spend the night in the untouched nature of Norway, in the mountains or at the fjord. Here you can find tips, routes and places for camping in Norway and watch the first videos.

Starry skies, cold nights and northern lights

You want to experience the natural spectacles of the country in the far north of Europe? The best way to do that is a camping vacation. You can swim in glassy glacial lakes, marvel at ancient forests and rocks, and maybe even see the northern lights. Camping is a big word for many people. And in any case, this vacation should be well planned. So you can plan or if you just want to get a taste of camping, you will find many great tips for equipment, super beautiful routes and places.

Roof tent recommendation: Camper rated

Want an expert opinion on the roof tent? Here you can find the video of a passionate camper who has discovered the advantages of a roof tent for himself and has many great tips for traveling with a roof tent in store. More tips for campers in Norway can be found here (external): Camping Norway.

Freedom by car: roof tent camping

You have everything planned for the perfect camping vacation, only the accommodation is missing? How about a roof tent? Roof tents are the new way to camp, because they combine all the advantages of classic tents and caravans. They are just as space-saving as classic tents and since they can be mounted on any car roof, you also have more storage space in the car.

Due to the thoughtful construction of many roof tents, they hold bombproof on the roof even in difficult terrain. So you won’t get hit by flying tarps and tent poles in the car.

Of course, good roof tents are also absolutely rainproof. In bad weather, the dismantling is also super easy. While you do not have to fold so wet and dirty tent tarpaulins, most models for the car roof can be easily folded. This keeps you clean and dry!

Of course, you’ll notice the extra weight on the roof when driving, but it’s much lighter and more terrain resistant than a camper, and you won’t have to awkwardly squeeze the tent into the trunk.

Roof tent for the roof of the car

Firm grip on difficult terrain

Easy dismantling

BUT: Weight on the car roof is noticeable

FOR: more space in the car

Never heard of a roof tent?

Camping route: mountain, hiking & camping

Once you have familiarized yourself with your roof tent, you are ready to go! A possible route would be from Dovrefjell over the picturesque Geiranger to the breathtaking Jotunheimen.

Experiences hiking: Fishing, Starry Sky & Mountains

The perfect way to prepare for the night after a hike through the overgrown mountainsides is to pitch your tent. You are allowed to do this anywhere in Norway as long as you don’t damage the existing nature. When you have put all the pegs into the soft mossy ground, it is time for a tasty meal from the gas stove. For this it is worth trying fishing in the crystal clear rivers.

With a full stomach, you can then spend the night under the clear starry sky. In the Norwegian wilderness you have no light pollution like in big cities, so you can look at the stars through the skylight of your tent.

Continue through romantic villages of wooden huts, past rushing waterfalls, over slippery rocks, through the stream and up to the top of the mountains to see you meandering through Jotunheimen rivers. Jotunheimen has the highest mountains in Norway and therefore many famous hiking trails.

Quick overview:

Road trip through Norway: tips, route & places

This vacation show you the two young men in the video and give besides the beautiful nature shots helpful tips about camping in Norway and the route. They are both experienced campers, as they have already set out several times to explore a part of Norway.

Top 10 Places: Senja, Lofoten & Co.

You don’t want to plan a fixed route at all, but rather get to know the top 10 places in Norway?

Then you can check out the list of places below:

Varangerhalvøya – Senja – Lofoten

We start high in the north with Varangerhalvøya, a region with fjord and unique glacier rocks. Also far north is Senja, an island popular for hiking vacations in the high mountains above the sea. If you’re lucky, you can spot whales in the water there. Also by the sea is the Lofoten archipelago, where you can marvel at brilliant northern lights. Or you can walk across the small bridges that connect the inhabited islands. There is also a nice place for a snack in the lovely fishing villages.

This is how picturesque the Lofoten Islands look:

Helgeland – Femundsmarka National Park

Have you ever seen black rocks? You can find them in the Helgeland region a bit further south. Because of its enchanting landscape, it used to play a role in sagas and fairy tales. Nowadays it is a popular place for cycling or kayaking. A little further south is Femundsmarka National Park, a popular destination for camping vacations by the lake. In this there are even reindeer to marvel at.

Cute reindeer:

Loenvatnet – Nærøyfjorden – Valdres

Another insider tip for swimming in crystal clear glacier water is Lake Loenvatnet. Further south, you can continue your tour with Nærøyfjorden. This is a classic fjord on sunlit mountainsides, with a ferry as its attraction. About three hours away to the east, you’ll find the Valdres area. This is worth it for a breathtaking view of a landscape of forested valleys and sparkling lakes.

This is what awaits you in Valdres:

Hardanger – Jettegrytene i Nissedal

Also famous for its unique nature is the Hardanger region. Since a lot of fruit is grown here, springtime conjures up famous fields of flowers on the landscape. In the far south, it’s time for another insider tip: Jettegrytene i Nissedal. This one is worth seeing for the specially shaped rocks in the dried riverbed.

This is the picturesque landscape at Jettegrytene i Nissedal:

Norway on the map: Scandinavia

Here you can see Norway on the map. The country borders Sweden and is located in the north of Europe, which can be commonly called Scandinavia.

Getting there: What you should know before your vacation

Before you travel to Norway, there are a few things you should know. It is important to know that Norway has kept the Norwegian Krone (NOK) as currency. So you will need to change your currency before you can relax on holiday. Although credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere, in the smaller, more rural provinces you should always carry some cash for emergencies.

Climate: From temperate to polar climate

Furthermore, you should know about the weather in Norway. The country has a temperate climate in many regions that can be visited all year round. However, many areas should rather be visited in summer, as winter is very dark and gloomy and light rarely comes through.

West: lake climate; high precipitation rate, cool summers and mild winters

East: dry climate; cold winters, warmer summers

North: Polar climate; No sun in winter

Here you will find a current overview of the weather in Norway:

Facts: What else you should know about the country

In Norway there is right-hand traffic

Norway has a very high cost of living

There is a very well developed internet network in Norway

Alcohol may only be purchased from 18, spirits from 20

Oslo: City trip to the capital

Norway’s capital Oslo is located on the south coast of the country and is characterized by culture and green spaces. Due to a variety of museums, the city is always worth a trip, both in good and bad weather. In the city centre you will find historical buildings and a super shopping mile that invites you to stroll around. The numerous restaurants invite you to try freshly caught fish and on the peninsula bordering the city you can even find real Viking ships from the 9th century!

Bergen: holiday resort and metropolis

Bergen is the second largest city in Norway and just as worth seeing as Oslo. What is special about Bergen? The city is located in a valley, surrounded by seven mountains, whose peaks offer a beautiful view over the city. Here you can go hiking or skiing. Sport is not your thing? No problem, the funicular Fløibanen takes you to the viewing plateau of Fløyen.

Bergen is also the gateway to Norway’s largest and most famous fjords, which are a real must-see. As well as stunning nature, Bergen boasts beautiful, colourful wooden houses and winding streets that are home to a strong music scene and many famous composers such as Edvard Hagerup Grieg.

Map from fjord to fjord

First of all – a fjord is an arm of the sea that reaches far into the country. The Hardangerfjord, the Trolltunga and the Sognefjord are the three largest fjords in Norway. Bergen lies right in between them, making it the perfect starting point for a tour through the Norwegian wilderness, towards the fjords. Our insider tip: The fjord village Flåm is located northeast above Bergen and offers a wonderful idyllic and homely atmosphere. If you have a lot of time, you can take the Flåm Railway, which is considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world.

Stops along the way:

Start: Bergen

Hardangerfjord

Trolltungafjord

Sognefjord

This route takes you right past the biggest fjords in Norway!

360° view over the Sognefjord

This breathtaking fjord is not only the largest in Norway, it is also the longest and deepest fjord in Europe. Other, smaller side arms lead away from it, which in turn flow into smaller fjords.

Lofoten: Island hopping in Norway

The Lofoten Islands offer natural spectacles at their best. During the long winter months you can marvel at the fascinating northern lights. In summer, on the other hand, it never gets dark, not even at night! Especially outdoor fans will love these islands, as the unique landscape between mountains, small villages and the sea invites you to explore and hike. Due to the relatively mild climate, despite the northern location, the Lofoten Islands are considered a year-round destination, as you can experience the islands in winter as well as in summer in a very special way.

Map: The Lofoten Islands in the North of Norway

The Lofoten Islands are part of the large archipelago in northern Norway and comprise the western section of the archipelago. The individual islands are connected by bridges, which make it easy to explore the entire region. Despite the many bridges, the region can only be approached by water or by air. For those who want to make the journey a destination, take the famous Hurtigruten route along Norway’s Atlantic coast by ship, which offers spectacular views of Norway’s landscape.

Reine: Idyllic village on the Lofoten Islands

Reine is a small fishing village on the east side of the Lofoten Islands. Besides the typical Norwegian red wooden houses, you can experience all kinds of things here. Especially photographers will get their money’s worth here in the early morning hours, when the rising sun bathes the mountains and the water in a magical light. Hikers can fulfil themselves on the Reineberg, from the top of which you have a breathtaking view over the village and the sea. You are not a professional mountain climber? No problem, on the mountain leads the so-called Sherpa stairs, which facilitate the ascent.

Checklist: 5 places of interest

These 5 places you must have seen!

Tip 1: Schwangau for dreamy people

For a fairytale experience in Bavaria, Schwangau is the place to be. Here you will not only find the castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, but the historic town of Füssen is also well worth a visit. Below the royal castles is also the picturesque Alpsee, to which a trip is always worthwhile.

Tip 2: Marienplatz in Munich

Tip 3: Zugspitze for hikers

The Zugspitze is the highest mountain in Germany and borders directly on Austria. Thanks to its three mountain railways, the Zuspitze is accessible to everyone.
Frankfurt am Main

With a population of about 750,000 and an area of almost 750 square kilometers, Frankfurt am Main is one of the important German metropolises. As one of the most imposing German cities, the Hessian metropolis of Frankfurt is in no way inferior to the other cities of Berlin, Hamburg and Munich. The standard of living is high and the economy stable. While students appreciate the colorful nightlife, the strong banking and financial sector attracts mainly entrepreneurs and investors here. Thus, not only apartments in the city centre are popular here, but also villas and detached houses on the outskirts of the city.

Hamburg

Strong economy, sea air, international orientation – all this makes Hamburg in the north of Germany. Hamburg has its very own charm, shaped by its unique history, maritime shipping and the many international residents from all corners of Europe. It is not only home to families, students and entrepreneurs, but also to famous faces from the worlds of film, television, music and sport. This, of course, makes the Hanseatic city’s real estate market particularly attractive. So anyone who owns a property in Hamburg can consider themselves very lucky.

Munich

The Bavarian capital impresses with its beautiful architecture, a wide range of cultural activities and a high standard of living. As a historic art and cultural metropolis, Munich fascinates families, couples, students and young professionals. Entrepreneurs and investors are also attracted by the proximity to the Alps, the multitude of breathtaking lakes and the proximity to the Italian coast in the south. As Germany’s third largest city, Munich also stands out for its very low unemployment rate, as well as its strong technology and science sector. No wonder that hardly any other city in Germany is as expensive as Munich. Whether it’s a spacious villa in Maxvorstadt, a renovated apartment in the Glockenbachviertel district or a modernised detached house in Bogenhausen – here you’ll find the most luxurious properties in Germany.

Lake Starnberg

Lake Starnberg is located just under 40 km from the centre of Munich and is thus midway between the Bavarian capital and the popular residential and holiday resort of Tegernsee. Grünwald is also not far away by car. Cultural richness, untouched nature and the quiet and relaxed atmosphere make the communities around the lake a popular place to live. German celebrities in particular appreciate this. So be prepared to run into one or the other famous face here.

Southern lakeside road at Lake Starnberg

While the north of Lake Starnberg convinces with its small town feeling and the community of Seeshaupt in the south with its family atmosphere, the east of Starnberg is considered a former residence of German nobility. And it is precisely here that the most expensive street in all of Bavaria is located, with its breathtaking view over the entire lake. Property prices in the southern lakeside street are around 25,000 euros per square metre.

Sylt: The most expensive place to live in Germany

Sylt is and remains an island of superlatives. And there in many respects. The proximity to the North Sea and the unspoiled nature makes the clocks tick differently here. While a large number of European holidaymakers from the mainland are drawn here in summer, the autumn and winter months are all about peace and relaxation. This is also reflected in the purchase and rental prices. Nowhere in Germany is real estate negotiated as expensively as here.

Hoboken Way

Osterheideweg

The most expensive road on Sylt is Hobokenweg in the east of the island.

Hobokenweg in Sylt

Also called the ‘street of the super-rich’, Hobokenweg outstrips all other streets in Germany in terms of price per square metre. Only those who can afford it live here: From wealthy heirs to successful corporate executives. Nowhere else in the entire Federal Republic is it as expensive: property prices here are in fact around 35,000 euros per square metre.

Tegernsee

Those who sometimes need a break from the colourful hustle and bustle of the big city will find it at Lake Tegernsee. The lake is located south of Munich and is easy to reach by car. Thus, the communities around the Tegernsee inspire with their idyllic landscape, the high level of discretion and the breathtaking nature. While the breathtaking view over the Tegernsee and the adjacent valleys is the charm of the Leerberg, the communities of Gmund, Wiessee and Rottach convince with their proximity to the lakeshore.

Rottach-Egern on Lake Tegern

One of the most popular residential areas is Rottach – a community south of Lake Tegernsee. Compared to Leerbach, the villas and apartment buildings here don’t have the greatest lake views, but they do inspire with their proximity to the village centre and the lakeside. Especially individuals who do not like to live on top of the mountain like to settle in Rottach. Property prices here are around 15,000 euros per square metre.

Insider Tip: Sunken City & New Year’s Swim

You want to experience something new and are looking for adventure? Then we have the absolute insider tips at the Edersee for you. Whether sunken villages or the custom of jumping into the cold water for the New Year. Here you can find out everything about the best and most secret sights and attractions at and in the Edersee.

Atlantis in the Edersee: the sunken villages

One may hardly believe it, but under the Edersee a total of three villages have disappeared, which, when the water level is low, come back to the surface and can be hiked. How the whole thing came about is very simple. More than 100 years ago the Eder dam was built for navigation and the villages Asel, Berich and Bringhausen had to move their location upwards. Therefore they disappeared in the lake after the construction and are now considered as Atlantis of the Edersee. To visit them there are two possibilities. Either you dive under the lake and examine the mysterious world under water or you wait until the water level sinks and the cities appear. If the latter is the case, you can even cross the lake on the sunken bridge.

New Year’s swim: jump into the new year

A very special tradition and an insider tip at the Edersee is the so-called New Year’s swimming. Every year the town invites you to start the new year together and to celebrate this with a jump into the cold water. The custom always attracts brave swimmers and less brave spectators to take part in the spectacle. So if you’re in the area and have been celebrating into the New Year, you’re welcome to participate for free and start the next year fresh. There will be hot drinks and food to warm you up, as well as a sauna cart. So dare something new and jump into the cold water on your own responsibility!

In total, there are four different ways to get to and from the island of Sylt. We show you here which they are, so you can choose the right choice for your journey.

Arrival by train

From Germany and Austria you have the possibility to reach Sylt via some major cities. Travel relaxed by train and get off at one of the three stations on the island.

Arrival by plane

Sylt has its own airport in Westerland, which is why you can reach the island easily and, above all, quickly by plane. Many regional airlines fly to the island from several major cities.

Arrival by car

Although there is no road leading to the island, you can still reach Sylt by car with the help of the Autozug. To do this, you can simply drive as far as possible in the direction of Sylt and then use the Autozug or the ferry to cross the sea together with your car.

Arrival by boat

You also have the possibility to reach the island with the help of a ferry. Enjoy the pleasant North Sea air during the crossing and take a relaxed boat ride to the island. You also have the option of taking the ferry by car, so you are more flexible during your holiday.

Places & communities: Where is it most beautiful?

On Sylt there are some beautiful places and communities where you can spend your holidays or buy a property. Westerland is considered the center of the island. In this place you will find a wide range of leisure activities for the day or night. The club scene is also very pronounced here. The municipality of List is considered the northernmost town in Germany with some beautiful beaches and dune landscapes. Here you can surf, swim and play with your dog on the beach. The town of Kampen is considered an absolute celebrity hotspot. In this small community you can meet the elite at the most exclusive and luxurious parties and events. “See and be seen” is the motto here.

Westerland: Centre of the island

Westerland is considered the center of the island of Sylt, as you can experience a lot here during the day and at night. The municipality has its own airport and train station. Especially for teenagers and young adults there is a wide range of leisure activities such as water sports, events, restaurants, bars, shops and an 8 km long sandy beach. In Westerland there are also many clubs where you can party until late at night. Especially the Sandstraße and de Paulstraße are known for a wide range of bars and pubs. Here you will meet a colourful and lively society. For holidays with children, the place offers a leisure pool or an aquarium.

List: many beaches and a great offer

The municipality of List is located in the very north of the island of Sylt and offers a beautiful landscape with dunes and beaches. If you are looking for a relaxing holiday, you should definitely take a look at this place. Here you will find two lighthouses, a harbour and several restaurants directly on the coast. List offers perfect beaches for surfers, nudists, dog owners or shallow water for children. The offer for leisure and recreational activities is very diverse in this place.

Kampen: Hotspot of the elite

The small village of Kampen, with just 700 inhabitants, is located north of Westerland and is surrounded on both sides by the sea. The place has established itself especially in recent years as a celebrity hot spot and popular holiday resort of German tourists. Here you can find, especially in the high season, the elite and high-ranking society. At the exclusive parties the motto is: see and be seen. Besides the society, Kampen also offers a beautiful and picturesque nature with white sandy beaches and the legendary red cliff.

Insider tip: Sylt in winter and the elbow

You want to get out of the mass tourism and enjoy the island with its beauty and nature alone? Then we have two absolute insider tips to get a little closer to this goal. Sylt is very well known and especially in the summer months there are many crowds of people on the popular island. To escape this hustle and bustle, our first insider tip is the nature reserve Ellenbogen. This is located at the northernmost tip and promises peace, solitude and above all relaxation. Here you can come down and enjoy the time for yourself. Another insider tip is to travel in winter. This is rather unusual for a holiday by the sea, but in the winter months you can avoid the high prices and enjoy beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

Sylt in winter: few tourists and a beautiful sky

You read that right. Although the island is dominated by summer tourism and especially popular with the affluent society, this fact comes in handy during a trip in winter. For one, there are the lower prices. The island is known for high accommodation or restaurant prices, but this is usually only true in summer. If you plan to come to Sylt in winter, there will be no crowds and you can enjoy the beauty and nature in peace. Also the prices in accommodations and restaurants will be smaller due to the decreasing demand. And now the absolute insider tip! The winter sky over Sylt is breathtaking and beautiful. You can enjoy fantastic sunrises and sunsets and never forget this sight.

Elbow: rest and relaxation away from the crowds

The nature reserve Ellenbogen is the northernmost point of the island and an absolute must when you make a holiday on Sylt. Here you can relax, let your soul dangle alone and forget the stress of everyday life. Walk on the beach, in the dunes or make yourself comfortable in the sand. Enjoy the cold sea air and the solitude. Here you can escape the hustle and bustle and concentrate on yourself. From this point you can see as far as Denmark and, with a bit of luck, a few seals will visit you on your walk. So if you are on Sylt, a visit to the elbow is highly recommended and a real insider tip.

Beaches: Where are the most beautiful beaches?

The range of beaches on Sylt is very high. Depending on your needs and wishes, you can find your ideal beach and enjoy the day in the sun. In addition to some beaches for dogs or nudists, the island offers many opportunities for families with children and water sports or recreational activities. On the beach in Hörnum, for example, you can relax perfectly and let your soul dangle in a beach chair. Here the water is shallow and calm and you have the ideal opportunities to learn a water sport. If you prefer more action and a wider range of leisure activities, we would recommend the main beach of Westerland. Here you will find many restaurants, bars and a more extensive range of water sports.

Hörnum Oststrand: Shallow water and fewer tourists

Hörnum beach is located in the south of the island of Sylt and attracts many families with children every year during the summer months. The promenade is surrounded by many small restaurants and bars and there is a lighthouse and a harbour in the area. The beach offers white sand and very calm waters, which makes this part of the island ideal for learning how to windsurf and sail. Children and beginners can visit the sailing and surfing school and learn on the shallow water. Dogs are also welcome here! Hörnum’s eastern beach is considered very clean and the water quality is also good. In July and August, the occupancy rate is at its highest.

Just make yourself a picture of the beach in Hörnum and explore the beautiful surroundings before your visit!

Average price per square metre for a house on Sylt: 12,030€/sqm

Holiday with children and dog – is that possible?

Holiday on Sylt with children and dog? Yes, that is possible. For both children and dog owners, the German island offers several attractions and areas to spend a great holiday. Our tip for a holiday with the dog is: avoid crowded beaches and go for a walk in the morning hours. You can’t go wrong with this in any case and you won’t disturb any other tourists. There are also some local activities for children, such as a mudflat hike or a tour in the Sagen forest. Here you learn a lot about the past of the island and the special natural events in a playful way. So there is something for the whole family.

Sylt with dog: dog beaches and pet-friendly accommodation

Of course you don’t have to leave your dog at home during your holiday on Sylt. On the contrary. On Sylt there are many offers and areas where you can ideally spend your holiday together with a dog. We recommend that you avoid the overcrowded beaches in the summer and prefer to go to quieter areas. Beaches on the tidal flats are usually less frequented by tourists and especially in the early morning hours you can watch the sunrise during a walk. Also the hotels and accommodations are in many cases very dog-friendly. If you inform yourself in advance, nothing should go wrong. However, keep in mind during your visit that your dog must be kept on a leash in nature reserves and that you should always be considerate of your fellow human beings.

Sylt with children: Mudflat hike, indoor swimming pool or Sagen forest

There are also many attractions for children on the island and you can make an ideal family trip here. The highlight is of course a mudflat walk, for which the island is ideal. There are walks for children and families so you can learn about the process. Another attraction is the Legend Forest of Sylt. Here you can playfully learn about the various legends of Sylt on a path about 200 metres long and find shade from the sun under the numerous trees. Should the weather not play along and an activity in nature not be possible, the Sylt wave is ideal as a substitute program.

Weather & Climate on Sylt: Temperatures and Precipitation

It doesn’t matter if it’s winter or summer. If you want to go on holiday, the weather should play along and fit into your plans. For example, if you are currently considering whether you should spontaneously start a short trip to Sylt, a look at the weather map would be advisable. You don’t want to pay money for accommodation and the journey, only to be unable to spend a day at the beach because it’s raining cats and dogs. We show you here the temperatures and the average precipitation of the important months, so that you can prepare yourself ideally.

High season temperature: June to September

June to September is when the island’s temperatures are at their highest. You can expect about 20°C and 7 hours of sunshine in August. In addition, the water temperature in this month is a pleasant 17 ° C. In June there are with 9 hours of sunshine per day the most sun in the whole year at about 18°C. The water temperature is only 13°C, so swimming in the sea might be a little too cold for some. During these summer months, you should expect an average of 9-12 rainy days per month. However, it is worth mentioning that there are very rarely complete rainy days on Sylt and the weather can change constantly throughout the day.

Low season temperature: October to May

As you have already experienced, it is an absolute insider tip to visit the beautiful island in winter. This is also true for months in autumn and spring. From October, the temperatures drop to about 12 ° C to -1 ° C in February. Also the sunshine hours become less and less and amount to only 2 hours per day in the months from November to January. You should also keep in mind that there might be more rainy days during your trip in winter. The most are on average in November with 14 days. Swimming can also be very fresh. If the water is still 13°C in October, the average water temperature is only 3°C in February. So this is not for everyone.

Location in the north-west of France

The French peninsula is full of culture, as the Bretons are particularly proud of their country. The relationship between Brittany and France is similar to that between Spain and Catalonia. You know me, you live together, but you don’t really feel like you belong to the rest of the country. Nevertheless, French is spoken here, of course, and also otherwise Brittany is not so different from the rest of France.

Best time for unforgettable trips to Brittany

At the very beginning, it should be mentioned that Brittany is by no means known for its maximum temperatures in France. Rather, you’ll find a mild, pleasant climate here, which rarely exceeds 30 degrees Celsius even in summer. The masses of tourists are attracted every year mainly by the impressive cliffs and friendly inhabitants. The region is especially popular for camping holidays in France.

Weather map for current temperatures

Maybe you’re thinking about going to one of the beautiful places on the French coast soon, or you’re already sitting in the car on the direct way to Brest, but you’ve completely forgotten to check the weather? No problem, we provide you with current temperatures and all other relevant information about the current wind and weather situation in Brittany.

Getting there: Travel time, stops and more

Before you even think about your accommodation, the very first question is: How do I get to Brittany? Of course, there are many different options, all of which will get you to Brest, Crozon or wherever else you want to go in the northwest of France. Of course, public transport is limited, especially in rural areas, but there are many other options to get you from A to B here.

By car: tranquil route through beautiful French small towns

Exploring Brittany by car is a particularly good option if you want to get around quickly and keep all your freedoms free while you’re there. However, the drive from Germany to Brittany is not quite short. From Saarbrücken, one drives straight over the A4 past Reims and Paris to Rennes, the capital of Brittany. But even if one is already at the German-French border and passed Saarbrücken in France, one still has at least 7 hours to drive to Rennes.

Here, a small stopover is a good idea, so you can not only see the northwest, but also explore the rest of France for a little moment. For example, the small town of Le Mans is located directly on the way to Brittany. This attracts with historical, French buildings that make this small town particularly contemplative. The city itself can be easily explored with the tram and the next day it goes on to Brittany.

By train: fast transport with a stopover in Paris

Also by TGV, the French high-speed train network, you are in Rennes within a very short time. Small catch: The train to Rennes does not depart in Paris from the same station at which the TGV arrives from Germany. But here, the possibility to get to know the streets of Paris more closely opens up. On the way from one station to the other, one passes the beautiful sandstone buildings of the capital, sees museums, shops and the way even leads past the famous Notre Dame. A piece of the French metropolis can be included in the trip here quite relaxed between two train connections.

The optimal route to the coast to Brest

Unfortunately, when you come to Rennes, you haven’t quite arrived at the most beautiful part of Brittany. While the capital of the region naturally attracts with cultural programs and a beautiful cityscape with a mix of modern and classical architecture, most people come to Brittany to take a closer look at the impressive coasts.

The largest coastal city in the Breton region is Brest. With just under 140,000 inhabitants and as a research and university location, it is still a very inviting city that also has a lot to offer in terms of cuisine, but more on that later. Fortunately, from Rennes, the train as also the car brings one on a fast way to the most western city of France. Within 2 1/2 hours, one arrives relaxed at the coast.

Cultural diversity in the North-West of France: culinary and local experiences

The national pride of the Bretons is not only based on the special location as a peninsula, but also on the culinary specialties, the breathtaking nature and other attractions that you can only see in Brittany. What you should not miss at all, we tell you here.

Typical dishes: lobster, oysters, cider

The rest of France drinks wine, in Brittany they drink cider, a kind of apple wine, and in the most different versions. On the one hand, of course, the gently tart classic, but especially for variants with honey and currant liqueur, the coastal region is known. Every apple fan is well served here.

The favorable location directly on the sea promises excellent seafood and fish. Especially lobster and oysters, which are already considered a delicacy, are available here in particularly good quality. Friends of luxurious dishes will get their money’s worth here, but also a little more down-to-earth you can get the national specialties, for example in the form of mules frites, so scallops with fries, which are often served with mayonnaise and are available even in the most elegant restaurants.

Finally, the absolute insider tip. No one should leave Brittany without trying this dish at least once. France is known worldwide as the home of crêpes, but the Bretons have their very own version of the specialty. Made from buckwheat flour, the batter is darker than standard crêpes and the thin pancakes also differ in name, as the Bretons love their savoury filled galettes. Especially with fish and horseradish, but also other exquisite combinations. All in all, Brittany is definitely the place to be for gourmets.

Activities and Sightseeing: Sailing trips, flowering garden and idyllic hiking.

Whether it’s hiking on the cliffs of Brittany or relaxing on the beach, the region of France offers many relaxing and time-consuming activities. In addition to the most beautiful areas you must visit, we tell you what else you can do in Brittany to make your holiday unforgettable.

Activity number one when it comes to fun and action is sailing. The geographical position of the region makes it predestined for everything that falls into the area of boats. People especially often come here to skipper and get their sailing license in idyllic surroundings. All along the coast you will find sailing schools and boat rentals that will let you live out your exciting hobby. For those who like it a bit more luxurious, you can rent a private yacht here to pamper yourself.

All over the world, France is known for its colorful flower fields, which were used in the past and still today for perfume production. But also castles and fortresses from the Middle Ages had their own gardens, so that a committee was formed in France, which fulfills the task of preserving exactly these. La Domaine du Montmarin is particularly recommended. From May to August the gardens are in full bloom, but beware: the beautiful fields are unfortunately not allergy friendly.

Also a must-visit spot is the pink granite coast along the Atlantic border of the region that offers simply indescribable beaches of sand and gravel. Here you want to enjoy the sunset with a glass of Kir Breton. There are also lighthouses at regular intervals, called phare in French, which promise particularly beautiful holiday photos.

The small bay of Mont-Saint-Michel is not to be missed. Above the beach, the historical city walls of the castle tower up and offer a unique view over the Atlantic. But Mont-Saint-Michel is not any more an insider tip for a long time, that is why one unfortunately cannot stroll quietly and undisturbed through the little town. Nevertheless, a trip here is worth it all the time!
