Career: From creative director at Gucci to fashion designer

Fashion designer Tom Ford is shaping an exciting success story. As a former art student, today’s successful man paved his way to becoming a designer for Gucci and YSL, until he founded his own brand in 2005. We introduce you to Ford’s inspiring career as a famous fashion designer and director.

Youth & Education

Tom Ford was born in Austin, Texas in 1961. In the course of his youth, Ford tried out many courses of study, including art history and art, which, however, did not make him happy. Even at a young age, the 59-year-old was interested in fashion. Thus, in his early 20s, Ford applied for internships with well-known designers, eventually landing a much-coveted internship with fashion label Chloé. During this time, he moved to Los Angeles where, in addition to many internships, he also took on modeling jobs, mostly for television commercials.

However, Tom Ford was determined to have a degree, so after his time in LA he decided to study architecture at Parsons School of Design in New York. He completed a year abroad at the French partner university in 1984 and 1985. Since Fort had discovered his passion for fashion, he took all his electives in fashion design. In 1986, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in architecture and interior design.

For Tom Ford, designer Calvin Klein has always been a great role model. After his internship at Chloé, Fort was sure: he also wanted to enter the fashion industry to become a designer. After graduating from Parsons, he applied to Calvin Klein several times but was not hired. He had luck with the Korean designer Cathy Hardwick, where he worked for her in New York as a design assistant. Ford landed a second success in 1988 with Marc Jacobs, who hired him as a designer for the Perry Ellis jeans line.

But how did Tom Ford get his job as creative director at luxury brand Gucci? Ford was recruited 12 years after working at Marc Jacobs, by former Bergdorf Goodman chief buyer Dawn Mello to work for Gucci as a designer in Milan. The young designer accepted the job offer and moved to Milan.

Since Ford did his job as a designer at fashion label Gucci very well, he was appointed design director in 1992. Two years later, he was appointed creative director. In 2000, Gucci and fashion brand Yves Saint Laurent merged. Ford took on the role of women’s prêt-à-porter designer at YSL in Paris, in addition to his post at Gucci.

Emergence of the designer brand Tom Ford

In April 2005, Ford announced the creation of the Tom Ford brand. Domenico De Sole, who was former president and CEO of Gucci Group, joined Fort. In the same year, the designer announced that he would collaborate with the Markolin Group to manufacture and sell eyeglass frames and sunglasses. He also formed an alliance with Estée Lauder to co-create the Tom Ford beauty brand. In 2007, his first flagship store opened at 845 Madison Avenue in New York. The now 59-year-old designer, has lived with Richard Buckley since 1987. Buckley, former editor-in-chief of Vogue Hommes International, met Ford at a fashion show in 1986. At the time, Richard Buckley was living in Paris but moved to Italy to join Ford as he was suffering from cancer. The editor-in-chief gave up his job at Vogue as the commute became u exhausting for him with his illness.

Tom and Richard became parents for the first time in 2012. Together they gave birth to their son Alexander John Buckley Ford in Los Angeles. Two years later, the couple decided to get married. Now the fashion designer lives with his family alternately in Los Angeles, London and New York.

Light and shadow, the background and special features of the model influence the quality of a portrait shot. These details must be checked and balanced as perfectly as possible before the actual recording:

• Tip One: The Smallest Things

The lens of a camera sees the smallest details – even those that nobody likes to find in a portrait photo. A cup still standing on the back of the table can make the entire portrait unusable. A pitchfork next to the model is just as little a part of a nature portrait as a wilted leaf on a windowsill is of an interior photograph.

Distracting distractions are more noticeable:

First, the image section for the camera recording is determined. Now the photographer zooms as close as possible to the person to be portrayed. During this process, the smallest details suddenly become much more visible. This can already be a window through which the daylight falls unfavourably in the direction of the model. Only now follows the next step to prepare a really good portrait photo.

• Tip Two: Looking in all directions

Some of the mentioned side issues change the mood of the portrait advantageously. So it is worth the effort to have a close look at the model from all sides in the planned photo environment. From above and below, from all sides and from behind – if necessary, helps to kneel and bend down, to sit the model down or to change his head posture.

Leaves, a piece of sky with a nice cloud formation or a park bench can influence the effect of the portrait advantageously. It depends with this selection on which statement from the later portrait photo is desired.

The interplay of sharpness, light and shadow in portrait photography

The actual motif can only be created by carefully checking all light, shadow and colour conditions around the main character. Further tips improve the recording quality:

• Tip Three: Bokeh

In photography, the Japanese term stands for photographic blurriness of backgrounds. But instead of shaking, it’s exactly this focusing game with the lens of a camera that comes into being for a good reason: it emphasizes the advantages of the portrait model. Technically, this shooting goal is achieved by changing the aperture and focal length and the photographer gets close to the model. The prerequisite for a desired blurring of the background is that the model is removed from it.

• Tip Four: The Exposure

Shooting in the dark will be different from shooting in bright daylight. For optimal exposure, the camera should determine the brightness of the model. The previously required exposure measurement is based on this criterion. No matter how bright or dark the background is: Only the exposure number of the model leads to a really professional portrait photo.

Result: Apart from all technical tips, patience is the most important aspect

There are many aspects to consider to get a really successful portrait. With patience, these four basic tips and other criteria such as distance, glare spots or the eyes of the model, every portrait can be perfectly photographed. One tip that hasn’t been mentioned here is patience. Because even the most beautiful model is only flawless if every detail in this millisecond of the recording is right.

The High Key Photography

Use a smooth white background. A wardrobe, for example, offers an excellent background, as these often have a flat surface and reflect the light. With the combination of longer exposure time and light, everything disappears into a white background. But even large sheets of paper are excellent. It is only important that your motif is clearly visible against the background. Try to contrast with the white background, a game of bright and bright colors.

Hey Key Photography: A lot of light through the open aperture

High key photography does not mean overexposure. For example, use a lens with an aperture of f/1.8 to 4, so there is sufficient light. The histogram admittedly looks a bit strange, but there is so much light on the sensor. Details such as the face and above all the eyes should nevertheless be clearly recognizable. So it’s really best if you slowly get to grips with the ISO, aperture and exposure. Do not expose too high and in particular do not burn out (overexposure).

The Low Key Photography

As you might already suspect, low key photography is the exact opposite of high key photography. A wardrobe is also suitable as a background, but in this case it should be black. But a dark room is suitable. You should increase the exposure time to for example 1/400 second, so that the light comes only on the face.

In low key photography, the subject is illuminated by a light source. However, it is important that you do not let your motif drown in the dark. So that the main motif does not sink completely into the dark, it is important that you find the optimal light. A photo light or a sunbeam that shines into the dark room can help you here.
This type of photography is especially suitable if you want to create special photo effects or to add a certain mood to your photo. For example, a high key photo can convey a lively and fresh atmosphere, while a high key photo can make the viewer think.

Macro lenses: From microorganisms to dust particles

When it comes to a 1:1 ratio, the subject and its projection on your camera and its image plane are the same size. In other words, an object one centimetre in size remains on the recording medium as a motif one centimetre in size. If the ratio is between 1:2, then your motif is only half as large. Means one centimetre becomes 0.5 centimetres. Usually we speak of a macro lens when the magnification is 1:4 and larger. In order to achieve the highest reproduction scale with your macro object, you as a photographer must be able to approach the subject very closely. You must be able to get so close that your camera is barely able to focus on the object. This distance is referred to as the “close-up limit”.

Macro lenses are generally used by photographers who want to capture the tiniest details, tiny creatures or insects. It is less well known that a macro lens focuses on everything and is as sharp as only very few lenses in this price range can. Exceptions to this rule are photographs taken at great distances. If you want to focus on quality of sharpness and don’t want to dig too deep into your pocket, then a macro lens is the optimal purchase for you.

The different classes of macros

Macros are usually roughly divided into three focal length classes. The short macro lenses have a focal length of approx. 50 mm and are among the cheapest. As a cheap entry maybe quite nice but not really recommendable, with the exception of the newer ones with a focal length of about 60 mm. Designed for cameras with an APS-C sensor, they achieve approximately the same detail as with a 100 focal length in full format.

The middle class of macros are the focal lengths around 100 mm. These include the Tamron 90, Sigma 105, Tokina 100 and Canon 100, which are the most commonly used and purchased macros. 150 – 180 mm is the longest focal length class in macro photography and ensures an extremely comfortable shooting distance during the 1:1 image ratio. Especially if you photograph animals, they still have an acceptable escape distance. However, macro lenses in this class are the most expensive, heaviest and largest. In addition, they no longer have such a high luminous intensity.

Possibilities with the macro lens in the portrait and beauty area

Macro lenses are also ideal as beauty and portrait lenses. In addition to an affordable price, the focal length is about the same as a light telephoto lens, which is ideal for facial proportions. The lenses are comparatively handy and lightweight, and with a light intensity of 2.8 still sufficiently high. For you as a beauty photographer, image cuts are made possible that you would not be able to achieve with other lenses due to the close-up limit. Of course long focal length telephoto lenses are used in the professional segment, but the photographer often needs a lot of space backwards and taking pictures from above is very difficult.

In addition, telephoto lenses of the appropriate quality are among the most expensive purchases. However, you should not only think about the most extreme details such as a part of the lips or eye. Also the really format-filling illustration of a face, as well as partial cutting away of it often needs a macro. Not only in terms of versatility and price is a macro lens incredible, because also sharpness and quality are unbeatable. However, make sure that the extension of the depth of field at close range is extremely small. Do not select the f-number too small. Of course, you can also use your macro for product shots as a handy telephoto lens with excellent speed.

If you want to really let off steam in the world and want to capture the many small inconspicuous things impressively, you can’t avoid buying a macro lens. Small things and details become very big and beauty highlights are particularly sharply staged.

depth of field – what is that?

The term depth of field describes the extent of the sharp area in the photo. The word depth of field should therefore be taken literally. It is a measure of how deeply into the photo (or correctly formulated: into the object space) all objects are sharply depicted. A shallow depth of field means that only objects in the foreground are really sharp, while the background is blurred. Conversely, a large depth of field means that both the foreground and background are in focus. You must therefore ensure a low depth of field if, for example, you want to make a portrait.

Then only the person is interested, the background is uninteresting. However, if you want to photograph a landscape, it is of course desirable to provide a large depth of field so that the landscape is as deep as possible in focus. In macro photography, on the other hand, a strongly blurred background is more desirable again so that the viewer’s gaze is fully focused on the object – for example, a bee on a flower.

It is only about the bee and the veining in the wings. The brook, which perhaps flows half a meter deeper under the flower, is of no interest and can rise in the blurred background. If you place the object skillfully, then you can direct the viewer’s gaze to the object with an appropriately adjusted focal length and depth of field. To do this, you must place the depth of field as close as possible to the main motif. This makes the foreground and background less sharp and the object is completely in the sharp area. This is called selective blurring.

depth of field – how do I do that?

The means by which you can influence the depth of field is the aperture. A large aperture provides a shallow depth of field, a small aperture provides a large depth of field. Please note that in photographer’s jargon a large aperture means a large aperture and thus a small number of apertures. f/2.8 thus provides a small depth of field (background blurred), while f/16 provides a large depth of field (background sharp). For the example of a portrait shot mentioned above, you have to set a small aperture number so that the person stands out from the background. It’s called exemption.

The same applies to the bee on the blossom. It stands out against the stream flowing underneath if you set a small aperture number (photograph with a large aperture, as a photographer would say). For our landscape, on the other hand, you have to set a large f-number so that as much of it as possible is sharply displayed. A small aperture ensures of course that little light falls on the sensor. Therefore, don’t forget to set the shutter speed longer and increase the ISO value if necessary.

However, higher ISO values have a negative effect on the image quality, so that you should rather use a tripod. Of course, most cameras have an automatic function (“Av” is the name of this setting in Canon, for example), where you only have to worry about the f-number and the camera then automatically adjusts the shutter speed and ISO value – but you should still keep an eye on what your camera is setting, because that’s not always correct.

The depth of field is an important design element. With a small depth of field on the one hand, objects (especially people in portrait photography) can be lifted from the background (released). On the other hand, with a large depth of field, all objects, including the background, are sharply focused (important for landscape shots). The depth of field is controlled by the aperture. A small f-number provides a small depth of field, a large f-number provides a large depth of field.

Sarina was born on the 03rd of December in the year 1993. She suffered from an eating disorder as a young girl and weighed only 45 kg. She needs a little time to come out of herself. At the age of 15, Sarina applied for the casting show GNTM and ended up in sixth place.

On Instagram we learn that she modeled for the jeans label “Good American” founded by Khloé Kardashian. It’s a big dream come true for Sarina. She has been able to land a job for the famous“Sports Illustrated“. Her dream is to eventually have a normal family life with children in a beautiful place.
