She tells us what it’s like to combine her two jobs and how she discovered the modelling industry. Krisly also tells us how she gained confidence and strength. Living abroad gave her job opportunities she wouldn’t have had in her own country. Let us meet you Krisly!

Krisly Selena

Krisly Selena, Costa Rican model and photographer based in London. She is able to combine her two passions and she is not afraid to fight for what she wants. Krisly has been modelling for almost 4 years, when she discovered this world while enjoying passion for photography. After that, she started modelling all over the world. Today we have Kisly in FIV Magazine.

Modelling And Photography: Two In One

FIV: You are already working internationally and have contracts with many agencies. How did you get into modeling? Was it always your dream job?

KRIS: My dream job was photography and thanks to this I became interested in modeling, and I have now been modelling for 4 years and the last 2 years at international level.

FIV: Did you put photography aside for modelling?

KRIS: Actually, I dedicate myself to both, you can find my work on my instagram.

Confidence: Small And Great Achivements

FIV: There are many girls in the world who dream of modeling but lack the confidence or courage. How did you get your self-confidence?

KRIS: For me, I have gained confidence through experience, recognizing small or great achievements.

Don’t Be Afraid To Try: Work And Learn

FIV: Do you have any advice for young people who would like to start modeling or are just starting their career?

KRIS: My advice to those who have doubts about dedicating to what they want is to allow themselves to try it and no matter the result, it will be beneficial learning.

FIV: What do you think is the most important quality for a model?

KRIS: It is important to learn to communicate and work as a team.

Dior Beauty: Krisly’s Next Objetive

FIV: You have modelled for Givenchy. Was that the biggest job you had so far or was there an even bigger and better job for you?

KRIS: One of my favorite works has been for the beers, it was a beautiful campaign.

FIV: What would be your dream job?

KRIS: My dream job would be a campaign for Dior Beuty, I love their products.

The Opportunities Of Living Abroad

FIV: When did you realize: Yes, I made it?

KRIS: After the first year of living abroad, I realized that I had many opportunities to make a living from modeling.

FIV: It’s been a pleasure for me and for FIV Magazine to meet to. We wish you the best!

Jess Lafrankie is an australien based photographer and member of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography. She has been published in over 40 international magazines and has developed a style and technique in the middle ground of art and advertising that has bought her many of Australia’s clients and publications. The FIV Magazine did an interview with the fashion photographer, talking about her first picture, inspiration for shootings and her future plans.

Personal information: interests, photography & her first picture

FIV: You live in Melbourne on the beautiful Gold Coast. How long have you lived there and what means Melbourne to you?

Jess: I moved from the Gold Coast to Melbourne when I was 18 to study and work as a photographer. While I constantly miss the sunshine of the Gold Coast, I enjoy the atmosphere of Melbourne and the creative environment it offers.

FIV: Do you remember the first picture you ever took? Have your creative talent been noticeable since you were a child?

Jess: I was more interested in other creative outlets as child. I didn’t connect with photography until I was 15. I transferred high schools and was accidentally put into a photography class instead of business. The class quickly became my favourite and sparked an interest in pursuing photography after school.

FIV: For our readers is interesting to get you known as person a little bit. How would your friends describe you?

Jess: I’m not too sure to be honest, they sometimes refer to me as the grandma of the group because I like to garden, read and can’t go past a cute cardigan.

Career: Professional photography, inspiration & shootings

FIV: What other parts of photography have you tried? Why did you decide to specialise on the fashion photography?

Jess: I was originally a portrait photographer and experimented in most of the other photography genres when I first started. I love specialising in fashion photography because it allows me to dream up concepts and then execute them, giving me the chance to distort reality on a regular basis.

FIV: With the number of pictures you post on instagram you get the feeling you have a new shooting every day. How does a normal day in your life look like?

Jess: Everyday is different, the amount of times I shoot a month always changes, no two months are really the same. I usually post less than half of the work that I do online.

FIV: You have got a great passion for photographie. Are there other passions in your life?

Jess: I’m a huge green thumb, I have about 350 plants in my home which I love taking care of and I’m also passionate about ancient history and travelling.

FIV: You also host retouching and photography workshops. What led you to this decision and what kind of teacher are you?

Jess: I was drawn to creating fashion photography workshops because there’s not a lot of opportunity for young photographers to have access to top models and luxury locations so I found myself wanting to create these opportunities for them.

I think overall I’m really open about my industry experience and happy to share as much information as I can to those who attend my workshops.

FIV: Where do you get your inspiration for your different projects?

Jess: Mostly I’ll find a location and build a concept or idea around that. You can find inspiration anywhere though, in books, art, conversation and reflection.

FIV: Do you recognize a bigger change process in this fast changing industry over the past years? How do you stay up to date?

Jess: You’ve just gotta do your own thing, this industry relies on changes and trends so as long as you’re focusing on your own style and interests you’ll find a way to create images that are relevant and personal.

FIV: You spend many hours taking photos. Tell us a little story that happened within the shootings and which firstly comes you in mind.

Jess: There was a time we were shooting on a busy bridge in Brisbane and the model was throwing her dress into the wind and a very expensive bracelet flew off her wrist and into the 4 lanes of oncoming traffic. It was stressful at the time but pretty funny looking back at it.

FIV: What are your plans and goals for the future? Where do you wanna be in your life in 5 years?

Jess: Hopefully doing what I’m doing today, I honestly love what I do and I’m so grateful for the incredible lifestyle this job affords me.

Luise Reichert is a fashion and commercial photographer based in Vienna. With 18 years she discoverd her love for photography. She already wins her first international competition, successfuly asserting herself against 6000 applicants and becomes “Student of the Year 2011” of the “Professional Photographer of the Year Award”. Further publications of her work in various magazines and on online platforms follow. Her passion, however, is clearly beauty and fashion photography. The FIV Magazine did an interview with the fashion and commercial photographer, talking about her development as a photographer, the course of her shootings and her plans for the future.

Personal information: childhood, Vienna & interests

FIV: When I think of Vienna, the three words Amadeus, Falco and Sacher Torte immediately occur to me and a picture of magnificent buildings emerges in my head. How do you see Vienna? What 3 things come to mind when you think of Vienna?

Luise: I was born and raised in Vienna so the city is my home base. My safe place. All of my family and friends are here. Sure, it’s nice to leave the city for a few weeks or months, but it’s always a pleasure to come back home. I really admire how clean, safe, and beautiful my hometown is. Three things that Vienna brings to mind is “Warmth”, “Safety”, and “Spritzer”.

FIV: When you see your work today, the thought suggests itself that your creativity and perhaps even your affinity for photography could be noticed in your childhood. Is that so or how do you remember your childhood?

Luise: I grew up in a really creative family. My father runs a small art school, so I was surrounded by art almost every day of my childhood. When I was 14 I held a presentation at school about photography. To be honest, I copied the presentation from my older brother. But thanks to him I began being highly interested in the art. Within the next few years, I had cut out hundreds of photos from VOGUE, ELLE, etc., and placed them in a folder. At this age, I hadn’t yet imagined myself as a fashion photographer but when I turned 18 I received my first camera as a birthday gift. Since that day, I loved seeing the world through its lens. I began shooting portraits of my closest friends and quickly became fascinated with fashion. As a result, I decided to follow my passions and become a professional fashion photographer.

Way to professional photography: shootings & team

FIV: Which way did you go to work as a professional photographer today? Have you completed an education or a study? Or did you train yourself and learn through experience?

Luise: I studied Photography and Audiovisual Media at Grapische Vienna. But I also gained a lot of experience from completing different tutorials and assisting other photographers. I feel as though photography is a constant learning process, and I definitely learn something new at every shoot.

FIV: Meanwhile you mostly photograph with a team of make-up artists, lighting technicians and of course models. Do you organize the shootings completely on your own and how does such a classic shooting day work for you?

Luise: It honestly depends on the client I’m working with. Some clients organize literally everything. Other times, it’s part of my job to book the studio or location, cast the models, find the right makeup artist and the correct stylist, etc. The day before the shoot, I prepare all of my technical equipment and pack all of the materials I need. A typical shooting day starts with me and my assistant transporting everything to the shooting location and meeting everyone else involved in the production. While the makeup artist and stylist are doing their job, I’m analyzing positions, setting up the equipment, and creating appropriate lighting to prepare for the job. During shooting, there are occasional makeup, styling, and background changes which gives me time to have a peek at the photos, see what is working, and select my favorites. After all the styles are shot, the team packs up their equipment with a hopefully successful shooting day completed.

FIV: Behind really good pictures there are often many more people than you might guess at the end. Do you have a team that supports you regularly? Your own retoucher? Or on what basis do the teams meet for your shootings?

Luise: I do all retouching myself but I do have a shooting assistant who is always supporting me and a few makeup artists and stylists that I work on a regular basis. But I am quite openminded when it comes to working with someone new. I usually find artists to collaborate with via social media or through personal referrals and create a team for specific shoots.

© make-up & hair @jody_cuberli

Photography: commercial & editorial shootings – the most impressive shoot

FIV: What is the difference between a commercial shooting and an editorial shooting? You have already done both on a very professional basis and are now an expert in both areas.

Luise: The specifications are usually much more detailed when commercial shooting. Some clients have strict colors and themes, some always want the same model, and some need to work with special props. I can express my creativity much more when shooting a fashion or beauty editorial. Of course, there are also special requirements for those shoots but all in all they provide more freedom.

FIV: Which areas of photography have you tried so far? Have you ever been a wedding photographer or taken classic studio pictures? How did you finally come to specialize in editorials?

Luise: I’ve previously done interior design shoots and occasionally took photos of employees, but my real passion for photography burns brightest when shooting editorial or commercials. I shot a wedding once, but to be honest I didn’t really like it. Fashion is my passion!

FIV: As a fashion magazine, we know that there are sometimes disagreements at work in the creative industry. What type of people do you prefer to work with and what are NO-Goes when it comes to working with you?

Luise: I myself am a shy, calm, and cautious person. I don’t really like to work with loud or bossy people or someone who has affectations. Luckily, I don’t have any problems making arrangements with a wide variety of different characters.

FIV: You have shooted in many places in the world that are worth seeing. What was the most extreme or impressing shoot of your career so far?

Luise: In Autumn of 2016 I did a shoot with a parachute on the beaches of Normandy. We drove a car from Paris and arrived on a cold and very windy day. It was truly a struggle to take control of the parachute while trying to get the right shot. I think it was the most exhausting shoot I’ve ever done, but the outcome was definitely worth it.

FIV: You have already achieved a lot at your young age. What is your plans for the future? Do you as a photographer want to keep up the pace or would you rather start a family soon? Maybe you will do something completely different and become a ski instructor.

Luise: I’m just at the beginning of my career as a photographer. So I definitely want to keep taking pictures, improve my skills, and connecting with new clients. A family is also definitely an option for me as well, but I’ll never stop shooting. If I weren’t to be a photographer, I might be something like an undertaker, crime scene cleaner, or a greif/death counselor. It sounds really weird but I’ve always been intrigued by the end of life.

Aleksander Ziarnecki is a Berlin based fashion and automotive photograph. The 1990 born photograph have already worked with clients like Zalando, Mercedes-Benz and Harpers Bazaar. We have the possibility to ask him some questions about his career as a fashion photograph, his last milestones and his his biggest shapers. Aleksander shares what his first camera modell was and at the end of the interview he gives his 3 best tips for aspiring models.

Way to professional photograph – BMX Accident, first photo, & the fashion world

FIV: You also started taking pictures at some point. When was it and how did it come about? Do you remember your first camera and your first shooting? Besides, you often hear that the first camera is one of the most important cameras for a photographer and it’s very difficult to part with it – does your first camera still own it and would you say that applies to you as well

Aleksander: I began with a basic analog point & shoot Canon camera which I borrowed from my dad. Then, a pretty serious BMX accident made me look for a new hobby so I began photographing my friends on and off bikes. Later on, I decided to quit biking for photography (it was a very good decision) and I bought my first DSLR from Nikon. It was the d60 which was a amazing camera to me at that time. I began by photographing friends in arranged sessions, later I progressed to machining. Great times!

FIV: In which way did your family influence your carrier? Where they really supportive when you first started taking pictures and do you have siblings who maybe took a similar route in their life like you and are also working in the fashion industry?

Aleksander: My parents did not work in the industry. However, the combination of my mother’s artistic soul and my father’s technical mind was definitely an important factor. My parents gave me absolute freedom in choosing my own path. I was given plenty room to search and explore – I consider exploration a most important part of true photography. For the support I received from them, I am and will always be extremely grateful.

FIV: Photography is a huge market. There is everything from family photography to lifestyle and fashion photography. Why did you decide to focus on fashion and how important is fashion for you overall in your personal life? Do you care a lot about the brands you are wearing or do you prefer a casual look?

Aleksander: I certainly agree that Photography is a vast field, and the fact that it is so dynamic is something that inspires me. I am content that every creative person can resonate will some aspect of photography, from reportage all the way to product photography on the other end of the spectrum. Personally, and for as long as I can remember, I have always been drawn towards photographing people. I have found this area of photography to be ‘soul stimulating’. I focused on fashion after realizing early on in my career that a fashion photograph is a time-frozen portrait alternative to the ‘real’ story of a person. Though I am focused on fashion photography, I don’t have a favorite brand of sorts. Although… I must admit that what Off-White does is quite cool. Nonetheless, you would always find me dressed in a comfortable and minimalist manner.

Biggest shaper of a photograph – from portrait to automotive

FIV: You had the opportunity to gather a lot of experience in your business. What experience would you say did shape your career the most and why?

Aleksander: Trying different things has definitely been the biggest shaper of my career. I was not focused on fashion from the outset. I actually ventured into many areas including, portrait photography, reportage, product photography and even automotive photography (I have a deep weakness for automotive photography and I am certain I cannot cure myself of this). I really don’t want this to sound too serious, but each project I take on provides me with huge lessons and contributes to the evolving shape of me personally, and my signature as a photographer. Be it a large advertising campaign or just a spontaneous shoot of my friends in my hometown, I strive to produce nothing short of my best work, and that means I always learn something.

FIV: As a photographer, you have a lot of work. But much more than work, it’s still a passion. Do you have a goal as a photographer? A particular model you would like to shoot or a location you would like to travel to next to work? And what would you say was your last big milestone in your career as a photographer?

Aleksander: The list of goals are overflowing and is continuously growing with new ideas. I am certainly proud that so far, I have been able to work with numerous well-known brands and many truly amazing people. As for people or places to work with or at, I have no plane. For years, I’ve kept an ideabook which includes several sketches. Nonetheless, completing sessions better that I envisioned is a deeply beautiful feeling. While I don’t have plans of people or places to work with, I do have some “crazy ideas’ which I would be very happy to complete in the future. To provide some context; Balenciaga’s last campaign with the golden lambo hanging on a crane is something that resonates with my ‘crazy’ side

Becoming a model – 3 tips

FIV: In your career as a photographer you have shot many different models. Over time different types of models emerge. If you shoot an editorial or test with a model – what are the 3 most important things that this model should have to work with you?

Aleksander:

Be yourself and do not pretend to be someone who you are not. You can see that immediately. Often when I’m relaxed at the session and the model notices it, it changes his/her behavior beyond recognition, and this is when the best work is usually produced

Do Your Best

Don’t be afraid to experiment even if it seems dumb or silly to you

Anyone interested in sports photography needs a camera with specific strengths. For professionals, the market is limited to the models of two manufacturers. The purchase prices are well into the four-digit range. Ambitious amateur photographers should not be discouraged by this, because there are also opportunities for them to get into sports photography.

Important features of a sports photography camera

As long as it is not about golf, chess or snooker, there is rapid movement on the playing field or the racetrack. If you have the subject in the viewfinder, a sharp image should be the result after the shutter release. A fast autofocus module and correspondingly high ISO values are indispensable. For good pictures, there should be no annoying image noise even at high ISO settings.

Sample photos from other users on the Internet show you the quality of the photos at high ISO values. Image noise is also a central topic in test reports. Above all, it is important that the image noise is not simply suppressed by the software inside the camera. The result is a calculation and color change of pixels, where the contours can get lost.

Since the subject remains in motion, the continuous shooting function is also exciting. You can compare the efficiency of the series recording in the offers of the manufacturers. You need a fast memory card to process the shots – otherwise it will slow down the series shots unnecessarily. The memory card should be able to hold a large number of images in good quality. It is optimal if the camera has a second slot for another memory card.

When it comes to the point, important settings should not be hidden in the menu. A good camera for sports photography therefore has buttons that can be grasped quickly and easily. It also feels good in the hand. It’ll prevent her from slipping away from you in the heat of battle. For outdoor photography, splash water protection against rain is ideal. In general, you should pay attention to a robust workmanship and feel when using a camera for sports photography.

Hobby and professional sports photography

All above mentioned features are combined in cameras of the highest price range. Since most camera manufacturers want to appeal to the mass market, professional sports photographers will find the models of their choice in the Canon and Nikon brands. Hobby photographers can also purchase these models, but should be aware that they are investing in pure luxury. You should therefore have the appropriate budget or be enthusiastic about the topic to the fullest extent so that this investment pays off. With up to 250,000 photos, the top models have a longer lifetime than normal cameras. You can therefore buy a used camera with a clear conscience if you don’t want to do without the top performance.

As a rule, however, hobby photographers do not need many features of the expensive professional equipment. If you don’t have to deliver perfect pictures in wind and weather, the splash water protection is not necessary. Nor does it have to be the fastest continuous shooting function. Because unlike sports journalists, your income doesn’t depend on having a certain scene 100% in the box.

Errors and rejects are allowed. This tolerance can already significantly reduce the price range of the cameras that come into question for you. Models from other manufacturers can therefore also be used for sports photography if they offer strong autofocus, fast image sequences and high ISO values with low image noise. The results are impressive, even if they don’t cost thousands of euros and have to adorn the front page of a sports journal.

Both professionals and ambitious amateur photographers will find suitable cameras for sports photography. With some research and a willingness to compromise, you can save a lot of money. For sports photography in particular, the choice of lens is much more important than that of the camera.

Instead of accustoming ourselves to holding the camera on everything we walk through the viewfinder, we should train our eye for’good, thus valuable’ photos. Digital cameras are especially important for the training of a photographer’s eye, because you can see the result immediately. But the more often you have the direct comparison, the faster you learn to see which motives are really worthwhile. However, photo enthusiasts should refrain from deleting these photos immediately. Firstly, these images are much easier to evaluate on a PC or laptop and secondly, these permanent deletions can lead to errors in the data records.

Tips and tricks for amateur photographers

Training the eye for a successful motif is very important, because it can turn a hobby photographer into an ambitious expert. However, it also takes a certain talent to recognise an intuitive vein, a good motif and to know how best to implement it. At the same time, a photographer needs the right knowledge of image composition, because only the combination of intuition, the training of the eye and comprehensive expert knowledge leads to extraordinary images that get the photographer’s heart pumping. One of the basic technical principles is to choose the best point of view. Most photos are taken at eye level because most people are standing when taking pictures.

There’s nothing wrong with these photos and they look natural. But now and then another position can be even more effective, for example when the photographer kneels or chooses a higher position and shoots the subject more from above. Who has the time to test the position height before the shooting, should take the opportunity calmly, because these changes of the point of view create completely new views. The situation is similar with Negative Space. Photographers understand this as the part of the image that is not the main motif. Its design has a great impact on the subject itself and is therefore important when it comes to good photos. This’empty’ space fixes the viewer’s gaze on the motif. That’s why people like to work with blurriness in empty space instead of with many small details.

the craft of photography

You want to take pictures but don’t know what to look out for? Use your camera and start practicing. In photography there are many important points to watch out for. Jamie shows you in a short clip, the 9most important photography beginners tips. Just black and white photography and working with light, makes your next Instagram profile more beautiful.

Black and white images – contrast is the key

The majority of people love and enjoy the colours of the photos. But black and white photos have their own rules and show their own unique world. That’s why it still exists, even though the technology has been outdated for ages. In addition to the unique beauty that black and white photography can offer, black and white photography also has the advantage that it incredibly trains the eye for lines, structures and image composition. The colour usually draws attention to details or shapes that are unimportant for the composition of the picture. The pure black and white contrast shows more the structures, the negative space and the depths of the image. That’s why a hobby photographer should take a black and white shot of his digital camera and go through nature for a while and, above all, shoot a whole series of portraits. Because not only nature shots gain their uniqueness through the black and white contrast, but also people show their uniqueness in a wonderful way in these pictures.

All photographers love their equipment and like to experiment with it. However, it is precisely in order to train one’s own eyes that amateur photographers should concentrate on one lens for a longer period of time and explore all the possibilities offered to them by this tool. This own limitation ensures that the photographer does not deal with more accessories or aids but with the subject itself and thus tests new perspectives or stylistic devices, which considerably trains the sixth sense of an ambitious photographer.
