Here we would like to tell you about the fascinating night that the bloggers from the YouTube channel Motorreport experienced in the mountains. You too can learn a lot from this for your next adventures with a roof tent.

Dawn in the mountains: try out rooftop tent camping

What does it actually feel like to be on the road with a roof tent? Imagine it’s early in the morning, the sun is just rising and you’re up at 1,500 meters above sea level – with a roof tent! Sounds like a crazy trip, doesn’t it? Today I want to tell you about the adventure night from the YouTube channel Motorreport in the mountains, where bloggers Anja and Matthias spent the night in an iKamper roof tent for the very first time.

You can find out more about iKamper roof tents here:

IKamper roof tent

You can watch the video here:

On the road in the large version: Skycamp roof tent

The two bloggers had the Škoda Enyaq Coupé as their base vehicle, and on the roof of the car they had a roof tent called the iKamper Skycamp 3.0. As usual with the Skycamp models, the Skycamp 3.0 is available in a Mini Edition and a large version. They had the large version here, which offers space for up to four people. Anja and Matthias slept in it to see how spacious it is.

Tip! You can read more about this roof tent size here: Rooftop tent for 4 people.

Setting up the roof tent: Let the adventure begin!

Anja put up the roof tent for the very first time at the very beginning. To put up the roof, she first had to unlock the eyelets with the key and then fold down the tent. Now they could fold up the roof in pairs. The wind was blowing quite strongly, but the roof almost raised itself. Depending on the dynamic load capacity of the vehicle, the ladder can either be stowed directly on the roof tent or in the trunk. In the video, it was stowed in the trunk. Next, it was locked into place, extended and the roof tent was up.

Once at the top, the awning could be erected, which was surprisingly easy. The awning already came with poles that just had to be inserted into the brackets on the tent. And Anja already had a protective roof over her head.

You should remember this procedure for your first roof tent assembly:

Unlock eyelets with key

Folding down the base plate

Fold up the roof in pairs

Ladder in the roof tent or trunk depending on load capacity

Engage ladder & set up securely

Insert awning poles into brackets

Freezing temperatures & wind: experience & advice

For the overnight stay, Anja and Matthias decided to close the roof tent completely. It has three layers: the outer layer, a fly screen and a blackout blind. This meant they could be sure that they would not only stay dry, but would also be protected from insects. During the night, however, they felt the wind. The thermometer read around 5 °C. They reported that thinner sleeping bags would not have been a good idea.

As a conclusion to their first night in the roof tent, they had these suggestions for improvement: Wrap up thick and maybe put something under the mattress. But challenges aside, the view from the roof tent in the morning was simply breathtaking. When they opened the windows, a breathtaking panoramic view awaited them. Even the wind wasn’t so bad.

For your next roof tent adventure: Warm sleeping bags & put something under the mattress.

Unforgettable experience in a rooftop tent: adventure

On the whole, the rooftop tent experience was certainly unforgettable, but the bloggers are more likely to be occasional campers. One thing is for sure: it was an adventure that they will remember for a long time to come. However, those who want to travel in a smaller vehicle and be as close to nature as possible should definitely find happiness in a rooftop tent.

Rooftop tent manufacturer: Overview for beginners

Are you considering buying your own roof tent after reading this experience report? There are countless manufacturers on the market. So that you can get to know the most important ones, you should read on in this overview:

Rooftop tent manufacturer

Roof tent comparison: the best roof tent?

However, you not only need an overview, but a recommendation as to which roof tent is best suited compared to others can also help you. Then it won’t be so difficult to choose the right roof tent. You can find our roof tent favorites here:

Checklist: Walchensee

This checklist gives you a great overview of the best activities at Walchensee and the surrounding area. You simply have to see these places during your holiday at Walchensee!

Tip 1: Hiking for explorers

Do you love the freedom of the mountains and being on the move at lofty heights? Then the Herzogstand mountain is just right for you! The parking lot at the edge of the mountain allows you an easy approach by car, but the mountain is also easy to reach by public transport. If you have made the ascent and now want to experience another highlight, buy a ticket for the Herzogstandbahn. The view of the lake is breathtaking and you can recover from the climb. In addition, the cable car is a perfect alternative for families whose children are too young for long hikes. You can enjoy the view in any case! In addition to the Herzogstand, there are many other mountains around the lake, such as the Heimgarten and the Jochberg.

Tip 2: Leisure time in and around the water

Kitesurfing, surfing, sailing and diving – there is something for every water sports enthusiast here. Experienced kitesurfers have chosen the Zwergern Peninsula as the best entry point, which is not yet recommended for beginners due to the somewhat treacherous winds. Are you interested in Stand Up Paddling, but don’t have your own equipment yet? No problem, because you will find a board rental on the south shore of the lake! If you don’t want to paddle on your own, there are also professionals on site who will give you helpful tips and instruct you. You’re off with all your sailing and diving gear and have already packed everything onto your camper or converted van? Check out our tips for camping at Walchensee here!

Zwergern Spitz: entry point for kitesurfing professionals

On this map you see the south-west shore of the lake, with the Zwergrenspitz.

Jachenau: Stand Up Paddle rental

Here you can find the location of the rental shop on the south shore of the lake.

Adventure: Diving in the Walchensee

Clear, blue water, that’s what the Walchensee is known for. There are numerous places where experienced divers can go underwater. For a real thrill, you can see an old car wreck as well as a quarry underwater!

Tip 3: Therme to relax

If you have had enough of the action at the Walchensee, you can relax at the Kochelsee. This is only 12 minutes away by car or half an hour walk from Walchensee. The Kristalltherme Trimini Kochel am See is located directly on the shore and is also a great alternative program when it rains. You can enjoy the beautiful view over the lake in the two outdoor pools and afterwards have a delicious meal in the restaurant. In addition to the saltwater pools, which contribute to health and well-being, you can enjoy massages and cosmetic treatments!

Advantages and disadvantages of camping in NRW

The most important advantage for real adventurers is that when camping you are in the middle of nature. This means of course that there are bugs, which sometimes get into the tent or the caravan. In addition, the sanitary facilities, so toilets and shower facilities are not as pleasant as in a hotel, but for that you save a lot of money if you make a camping trip instead of treating yourself to a few nights in a hotel or in a holiday apartment.

Kids and pets also often have more fun at a campsite, because they can really let off steam and no one complains about the noise. That’s why a camping trip is a great type of family holiday. Of course, a camping trip is not as relaxing as staying in a hotel, because you have to do the shopping, cooking and washing yourself, sometimes even under more difficult conditions.

But in return you have your freedom, you are not tied to a place and time. Very desirable campsites are often crowded, not quiet, and there can be annoying neighbors, but in return there is greater social interaction with other families and campers. This often results in friendships that sometimes last a lifetime.

Pros:

Cologne – the well-known metropolis on the Rhine is fascinating. Cologne is known for the Cologne Carnival, but there is much more to discover and much to see: The important sights, cool and hip neighborhoods and of course the Rhine. The first thing you associate with Cologne is the Cologne Cathedral. Cologne Cathedral is located right next to the main train station and is the landmark of the metropolis. If you are at the Cologne Cathedral, you should definitely climb it and look at Cologne from above.

A visit to the old town of Cologne is also worthwhile in any case, because this impresses with colorful houses and pubs on the Rhine. If you are a beer lover, you should definitely go to a brewery and drink a Kölsch beer, because they are very famous. Especially cool for couples: You can attach a love lock to the Hohenzollern Bridge, and thus promise each other eternal love.

Hip neighborhoods like the Belgian Quarter or Ehrenfeld are worth a visit, and are perfect for trying out the various restaurants on offer. The nightlife in Cologne is mixed, for everyone there is something suitable for an unforgettable evening in Cologne.

Camping in the south of Germany means swimming in lakes, hiking in the mountains and excursions into untouched nature. The south enchants everyone who undertakes a trip to Bavaria or Baden-Württemberg. A camping adventure is usually a trip you never forget and especially children and pets have a lot of fun in nature. But also couples and more and more young people try camping, because the flexible way of travelling pleases spontaneous and adventurous people well.

Bavaria: Tourists love the Old Town & Alps

Bavaria is located in the southeast of Germany and is known for the big city of Munich, Regensburg or Würzburg. There you can book old town tours and explore market places with old city walls, residences or English gardens. But even more interesting for campers are the Alps.

In the Allgäu you can enjoy the fresh air of the peaks forever and pause in old wooden huts and eat Allgäuer Käsespätzle. If you hike in Franconia, you can enjoy the beer and wine culture of Bavaria between vineyards and medieval villages in castles and palaces. In Upper Bavaria lie the highest mountains in Germany. Campers enjoy their holidays here in summer and winter. The region of Eastern Bavaria is one of the largest forest regions in Europe. Here you can travel through different cultural landscapes.

Those who enjoy the Bavarian nature, also enjoy the large animal species of Germany. Starting with red deer and wild boar and foxes, to beavers, otters and lynxes. So hikers should always have their camera at the ready. For hikers and campers there are a variety of hiking routes with different fitness levels. Campsites also offer information material, routes and maps, which people like to use to find their way around.
Sayings & Myths: Earthly, above and below ground

The Harz is not only beautiful to look at, but also hides numerous myths, sagas and old legends. For a myth to arise around something, it needs more than just a story. Several stories have to be formed around a theme and always a little bit changed by the constant spreading. On the one hand, parts of the story are embellished, others are completely omitted and others again and again change as an unchanging orientation. Myths reflect problems and experiences and mix past with future, creating a strange story that reflects and processes secret desires or inexplicable events. Around the Harz mountains there are several such legendary tales. A distinction is made between earthly legends, above-ground legends and underground legends.

Earthly legends: Peaceful & harmonious emperor legends

The first category of myths are the earthly ones. These earthly emperor myths describe the past time more harmonious and beautiful than it was. They revolve around Frederick Barbarossa, Henry the Vogler or Henry IV. The sunken time is portrayed so peacefully that some people wish it were topical again.

Supernatural legends: Witches, devils & Co.

On the other hand, the Harz is very much characterised by the supernatural. No other place is so famous for witches, devilish activities etc. It is said that magic lies over the mountains and especially the famous Brocken plays a central role in the myths and legendary stories around the Harz and is therefore a popular place to visit.

Underground legends: Caves & witch festivals

The last myth circling around the Harz mountains is the underground miners’ world and the stories about dwarves and mountain spirits that go along with it. Many famous poets and painters were involved in witch festivals and immortalised, for example, Walpurgis Night on the Brocken. There are also hidden sagas and legends in the mysterious depths of the numerous caves of the Harz mountains, which can be recognized by a lot of imagination even in the stalactites.

Camping: Cheap and central campsites

The Harz Mountains are the largest low mountain range in Northern Germany and offer an amazing and breathtaking nature. If you want to enjoy it to the full and switch off from the otherwise stressful everyday life, you should decide to go camping. You take everything the natural Harz Mountains have to offer and can enjoy a fairytale panorama and idyllic flair until late into the night.

During the day you are flexible in your planning, you can leave in the morning to the numerous nature highlights and sights whenever you want and come back in the evening to end the eventful day comfortably. You can sit together with your loved ones around a campfire, watch the starry sky and philosophize about the legendary legends of the Harz Mountains. Under the open sky you can fully immerse yourself in the world of myths and enjoy the peace and quiet far away from noise and technology.

The advantages and highlights of camping:

Rest and relaxation in the idyllic nature

Switch off from stress and everyday life

Mystical atmosphere due to the legends and sagas

Campfire and starry sky at night

Family-friendly leisure activities

Cost-effective variant

You want adventurous holidays? Go camping!

You can have a great time with your children and completely internalize the nature aspect. Most campsites are also equipped with recreational facilities so that everyone gets their money’s worth. So if you want to switch off completely and relax, you should try a slightly different kind of holiday and organise a tent, roof tent or caravan and go camping in the charming Harz Mountains.
Accommodations: Hotels, apartments & Camping

During your holiday in the Black Forest you can of course choose how you want to stay. You have the possibility to choose between a camping site, a holiday flat or a hotel. Depending on your budget and holiday planning, one or the other option is more sensible. Here we have selected the advantages and disadvantages of all possibilities to help you with your decision.

Holiday flat: Homely, flexible & cheap

Most of the visitors who spend their holidays in the Black Forest choose a holiday apartment. Although you live in a strange apartment for a few days, you can furnish it a bit more homely than a hotel room. At the end of the day you still have your own four walls and therefore a little more privacy. Most holiday apartments are located in the middle of nature and are therefore ideal for nature lovers who want to enjoy their holiday to the fullest and who want to go for walks or hikes at any time. With this option you can customize your day and leave and come back whenever you want without disturbing anyone.

Advantages of a holiday flat

Hotel: Catering & Wellness offers

Hotels as accommodation are on the other hand a somewhat simpler way to arrange your holiday. If you book additional meals, the meal times are fixed and you have to plan your day accordingly. You don’t have to care about where and what you want to eat, but you are bound to the times of the hotel and have to be back at the hotel when it suits you. Furthermore you have to be considerate of other guests and therefore you have to be a little quieter than you would have to be in a holiday flat, especially with small children. But in return you will always have a tidy room, a made bed and the food buffet. Furthermore, most hotels offer an own wellness and spa area, so that you don’t have to travel a long way to get there and in the best case you will get some discounts.

Advantages of a hotel

Simple and uncomplicated

Catering and tidy, clean room

Own spa and wellness area

Disadvantages of a hotel

Tied to mealtimes

Have consideration for other guests

More expensive than other accommodation Options

From sitting together around the campfire and watching the stars in the sky to exciting conversations and old stories – camping never gets boring!

In addition, camping is a cheaper alternative compared to hotels or holiday apartments and is therefore recommended for all those who don’t want to dig so deep into their pockets during their holidays. Although you have to cater for yourself and are not offered the most luxurious room, camping has a certain charm and at the end of the day makes for an unforgettable and eventful holiday. Camping is becoming more and more popular with young and old and is therefore a variant of the holiday that you should definitely try out.
