The Oyster Perpetual is considered the classic and mother of Rolex watches. Material: The famous Oystersteel

Rolex uses stainless steel Oystersteel for the cases of all its stainless steel watches. Technical Features

Chromalight display

The light reflections on the flanks of the central part emphasize the refined shapes of the Oystersteel stainless steel case, which is fitted with a cambered bezel. The new generation of Oyster Perpetual watches also features the Chromalight display, whose hands and indexes – covered or filled with a blue luminous substance that glows for a long time – are visible for longer in the dark.

Novelty: Caliber 3230

The Oyster Perpetual 41 and the new versions of the Oyster Perpetual 36 are equipped with Caliber 3230 – a movement entirely designed and manufactured by Rolex, presented this year. Several patents have been filed for this mechanical self-winding movement. This mechanical self-winding movement has made great strides in terms of precision, power reserve, shock resistance, resistance to magnetic fields, ease of use and reliability. Caliber 3230 is driven by the Perpetual-Rotor automatic self-winding mechanism. Thanks to the construction of its barrel and the increased efficiency of its escapement, it now boasts a power reserve of around 70 hours.

Winding crown

The winding crown, made from around ten different individual parts, is hermetically screwed to the case. Thus, for the first time in the history of watchmaking, Rolex created a watertight winding crown – a secure interface between the protected and sealed inner workings of the watch and the harmful influences of the outside world.

The radial cut

Radial grinding on Rolex dials is a preferred process in watchmaking for applying color with an intense metallic tone to the dial, as is the case with silver-gray, rhodium and ruthenium. In most cases, galvanic silver plating serves as a base layer for radial grinding. Another color is then applied to the dials prepared in this way. Sometimes color shades – like champagne – are created from several metals.

The Oyster strap

The Oyster bracelet, a particularly robust three-row metal bracelet with flat elements introduced in the late 1930s, is still the most popular bracelet in the Oyster collection. It is used on all Professional models, but also on some classic models such as Datejust, Day-Date and Sky-Dweller. It can be fitted with all types of Rolex clasps (Oysterclasp, Oysterlock and Crownclasp) and is suitable for use with the comfortable Easylink extension system.

Buyer’s story of the Hope Diamond

The Hope diamond was discovered in Golconda, India. Its ownership passed into other hands several times. In 1688, the diamond was bought by King Louis XIV and called “French Blue”.

Until 1792, the jewel remained in the possession of the French royal family. During the French Revolution, times became turbulent. During a looting of the crown jewels, the diamond was stolen!

It was not until 1839 that the diamond reappeared in the catalogue of Henry Philip Hope’s gem collection. After passing through several more owners, including Pierre Cartier and socialite Evalyn Walsh McLean, the jewel was acquired by jeweler Harry Winston in 1949. Winston eventually donated the jewel to the Smithsonian Institution, where it remains on display today.

How much do people know about the most famous diamond in the world? How much is it worth? Who owns the Hope Diamond? How big is it?

“The Peacock Brooch” by Graff Diamonds – $100 million.

This peacock brooch, unveiled in 2013 at the TEFAF luxury art and antiques fair in the Netherlands, has a total carat weight of 120.81g. This incredible display of beauty and extravagance from Graff Diamonds contains 1,305 gemstones and measures just over 10 centimeters in height.

The focus is on a central diamond. Its shape resembles a pear, the color scheme is dark blue and its weight alone is 20.02 carats. In addition to the central diamond, white, yellow, pink, orange and green diamonds are fanned out in the center of the brooch.

Wittelsbach-Graff Diamond – $80 million.

The Wittelsbach-Graff diamond has 31.06 carats. Its exclusive characteristics make it one of the most sought-after jewels in the world. The Wittelsbach Graff Diamond is an extravagant deep blue diamond with flawless clarity inside the stone. Laurence Graff bought the diamond in 2018 for a whopping $22 million.

Buyer history and regrind

The stone was discovered in the 16th century, deep in an Indian mine. At first, the stone is said to have been in the possession of King Philip IV. Through the Emperor of Austria (Leopold I) and its use as part of the Austrian and Bavarian crown jewels, the stone came to the House of Graff in 2008. Jeweler Laurence Graff purchased the Wittelsbach diamond for $22 million.

Increase in value + $58 million

Graff shows his talent here but also his willingness to take risks. After the purchase, he had the Wittelsbach-Graff diamond cut back to its current state. Today, the diamond is 31.06 carats, an ornate, deep blue cushion-cut diamond.

The recut improved the clarity and brilliance of the jewel and increased its value enormously. In 2011, the diamond was sold for over $80 million to its current owner, a member of the Qatari royal family.

“Pink Star” – $71.2 million

This fancy, vivid pink diamond weighs 59.6 carats and is the largest “inside flawless, fancy, vivid pink” diamond ever graded by the GIA.

In 2017, the “Pink Star” fetched $71.2 million at a Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong. This made the stone the most expensive jewel sold at auction to date. The auction was not long, as the Pink Star was acquired in just five minutes by Hong Kong conglomerate Chow Tai Fook Enterprises. Only the Wittelsbach-Graff diamond surpassed it due to Graff’s skillful recutting. He increased the value of the Wittelsbach-Graff diamond from $22 million to $80 million.

Originally mined by De Beers in Africa in 1999, the Pink Star weighed 132.5 carats before being polished and restored to its current stunning condition.

The “Pink Star” is a stunning 59.6 carat diamond.

Oppenheimer Blue – $57.5 million.

The Oppenheimer Blue will be the largest vivid blue diamond ever sold at auction.

This blue diamond shocked the public when it sold for a whopping $57.5 million at a Christie’s auction in May 2016. At the time, this 14.62 emerald-cut stone, once owned by Sir Philip Oppenheimer, was the world’s most expensive jewel ever sold at auction.

L’Incomparable diamond necklace – $55m.

The world’s most valuable necklace, created by jeweler Mouawad, contains the world’s largest internally flawless diamond.

Hard to believe but true. A little girl discovered the stone, amidst mine debris. In 1980, she found the L’Incomparable diamond in the mine tailings in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Later, the 407.48 carat diamond is attached to a rose gold chain adorned with 230 carats of smaller diamonds.

The stone was last offered in Singapore, reflecting Asia’s growing appetite for precious gems and expensive jewels.

Blue Moon by Josephine – $48.4 million

In 2015, Hong Kong billionaire and collector Joseph Lau purchased this diamond ring for $48.4 million at auction and named it “Blue Moon of Josephine” after his 7-year-old daughter Josephine. The 12.03-carat blue moon diamond was discovered in 2014 at the Cullinan mine in South Africa.

Graff Pink – $46.2 million.

The Type IIa graded modified emerald cut was estimated at $30-50 million, selling for $46.2 million.

For over 60 years, the Graff Pink was in a private collection, now it is owned by one of the most prestigious jewelry houses in the world. Through recutting, the recut 23.88 carat diamond displayed new color, clarity and inner flawlessness. “The Pink Legacy”, as the gemstone is also called, was auctioned in Geneva in 2010, at Christie’s auction house.

It is + $11,852,500 more valuable than number 2, the “Daytona Reference 6265 Unicorn”. Paul Newman’s Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is the most impressive of all Daytona watches.

The dial of the watch is dark brown, which contrasts with the white exterior trims. With Art Deco lettering, black and red minute display and square ends on the subsidiary dials. This auction has changed the world of luxury watches. Over $17 million dollars for a Rolex model.

Paul Newman? Actor, race car driver, Rolex fan

Paul Newman occurs more frequently in the history of Rolex. Actually Newman was an Oscar-winning Hollywood actor. He starred in movies like: “The Cat on the Hot Tin Roof”, “Sharks of the Big City” and “The Sting”. In 1925 Newman was born in Ohio and already in his childhood he gained first acting experiences. The first Oscar nomination was for “The Cat on the Hot Tin Roof” (1958). In the film Newman rejects Liz Taylor and prefers to take the bottle. Privately he found his luck in 1958 with Joanne Woodward. It was his second marriage. It was also she who gave him his world-famous Cosmograph Daytona. More precisely in 1972, when the actor began his career as a racing driver.

Daytona Reference 6265 Unicorn – $5.9 mln.

With $5,900,000, the Daytona Reference 6265 Unicorn is in second place in the Rolex ranking. The Daytona Reference 6265, manufactured in 1970, was nicknamed “Unicorn”. It was the only 18K white gold model available at the time.

Daytonas are usually made of stainless steel. Stainless steel has extremely many advantages. It is corrosion-resistant, temperature-resistant, hygienic, low-maintenance and above all durable.

The uniqueness of the watch needed the renowned collector John Goldberger to put the model 2018 up for auction. The equally renowned Phillips in Geneva was chosen as the auction house.

Goldberger donated the proceeds to charity.

Bao Dai Reference 6062 – $5 million

• Sold for: $5,060,427

$5,060,427 for 3rd place, the Bao Dai Reference 6062, auctioned at Phillips in Geneva in 2018. What makes this watch so special, the Bao Dai was privately owned by the last emperor of the Vietnamese Nguyen Dynasty. Because it was the rarest of the Rolex model 6062, it was added to the list of the most expensive Rolex watches.

Of course, the emperor and the clock did not simply come together. In 1954, the Nguyen Emperor asked a Rolex dealer for the rarest available Rolex. The dealer recommended him the watch made of 18K yellow gold. Not only 18K yellow gold, the watch also has diamond elements and a complex triple calendar with moon phase display.

The emperor kept his Rolex until his death (1977). In 2002, the watch changed hands once, even then for a high price of $235K. Now there was another change of ownership, like all expensive Rolex models, the Bao Dai Reference 6062 was put up for auction at Phillips in Geneva with a result of $5,060,427.

Of the currently 3 known models the Bao Dai is also something special in detail. Its diamond elements mark the even hours. In all other models the diamonds lie on odd hours. This diamond offset in turn resulted in the famous Rolex crown not being placed at 12 o’clock as usual, but below the diamonds. Another, absolutely unique in the Rolex world.

Aurel Bacs, Senior Consultant of Phillips in cooperation with Bacs & Russo, called the Bao Dai Reference 6062 “a work of art”. It is part of what makes up the culture of the 20th century, a truly unique work of art. Bacs continues: “This is what we, humanity, want to hold on to together. It would make perfect sense to place it in a museum that reunites the best of the best of the 20th century. It really is a landmark of 20th century industrial design,” says Aurel Bacs, senior consultant at Phillips.

This Daytona in yellow gold, produced in 1969 is one of the earliest 6263 models ever made. “The Legend” Daytona Oyster Reference 6263 is a genuine original by Paul Newman.

For many years its existence was discussed among watch collectors, as its nickname “The Legend” suggests. The selling price of $3.718 million was finally 3 times higher than the previously ordered estimate of the Daytona. It was finally auctioned in Geneva in 2017.

“The Neanderthal” Daytona Reference 6240 – $3 million

• Model: “The Neanderthal” Daytona Reference 6240
• Sold for: Almost $3.01 million

$3.01 million for the Daytona Reference 6240, another record for Rolex watches. “The Neanderthal” achieved such a high purchase price primarily because of its oversized subdials and unusual color combination. Made in 1966, this watch with a “Pre-Paul Newman” dial (hence the nickname “Neanderthal”) is the first cosmograph with screw-down chronograph pushers, a detail that improved the water-resistance of the timepiece.

This dial shows a color scheme that we have never seen before in the production of Rolex watches. This Rolex model represents for collectors a highly interesting and also historically significant object of desire. The stainless steel chronograph wristwatch has a unique black and white dial in “Pre-Paul Newman” style, as described above. With oversized registers and black outer second markers on a white track, a truly unique piece.

In addition, the proportions are just as individual and unique thanks to the oversized subdials that almost touch the outer white seconds track. Cosmographs with oversized subdials are now known as “Big Eye”. This layout is truly unlike anything the market has seen before.

Rolex has been an active sponsor of racing events since the 1930s and has donated the Antimagnetique watch to a select group of racing teams and drivers. A real rarity, because only 12 pieces of this watch were produced. Today 8 pieces still exist.  Since this watch was never for public sale, it was very much sought after by collectors and was sold in 2016 for almost 2.5 million dollars.

Like the absolute highlight model, Paul Newman’s Cosmograph Daytona for $17.7 million, this model is especially popular with motorsport fans. This $17.7 million piece is the most expensive Rolex ever sold.

A few details about the watch: The 44mm dial of this 1942 watch is set in stainless steel. You’ll find sublime Arabic rose gold with a subtle patina. The bezel (outline of the dial) is highly polished and forms a brilliant contrast to the case.

The “Oyster Sotto” is a real highlight. Shine, brilliance and still the typical, robust Rolex style. This stainless steel chronograph from 1969, with its Paul Newman dial in chocolate brown, tropical for Rolex conditions, and its red minute display. A real rarity.

The “Oyster Sotto” clearly exceeded the estimate at the auction by Phillips in May 2016. At the end of the auction, the seller brought in $2.036 million, including auction fees.

Stainless Steel Reference 6062 – $2 million

• Model: Stainless Steel Reference 6062
• Sold for: $1,988,000

The Stainless Steel is from the same model series (Reference 6062) as the famous “Bao Dai” and is ranked second in the Rolex ranking. 1 of 3 models, which also show the moon phase, a relatively expensive mechanism, which is rather reserved for designer watches.

Experts estimate that the stainless steel was only produced in 200 to 300, so the hybrid of waterproof Oyster case and calendar moon phases needed $1,988,000 at the last auction.

This 1972 GMT Master (Reference 1675), worn by Marlon Brando during the shooting of “Apocalypse Now”, was finally sold for $1.952 million after a 15-minute bidding war in which the watch far exceeded its original estimate.

The GMT Master with a black dial and black strap is also remarkable because Brando removed the bezel (the outline of the dial) at the request of director Francis Ford Coppola so that its glitter would not draw too much attention to the watch during Colonel Kurtz’s scenes. Brando also carved his name on the back of the watch.

Both watches, the Stainless Steel Reference 4113 and Pink Gold Reference 6062, were sold at the same day at the same auction in Geneva in November 2019 for the same price, exactly $1.945 million each.

The oversized stainless steel chronograph from 1942 is 1 of only 12 pieces in the 4113 series.
