Insider Tip: Sunken City & New Year’s Swim

You want to experience something new and are looking for adventure? Then we have the absolute insider tips at the Edersee for you. Whether sunken villages or the custom of jumping into the cold water for the New Year. Here you can find out everything about the best and most secret sights and attractions at and in the Edersee.

Atlantis in the Edersee: the sunken villages

One may hardly believe it, but under the Edersee a total of three villages have disappeared, which, when the water level is low, come back to the surface and can be hiked. How the whole thing came about is very simple. More than 100 years ago the Eder dam was built for navigation and the villages Asel, Berich and Bringhausen had to move their location upwards. Therefore they disappeared in the lake after the construction and are now considered as Atlantis of the Edersee. To visit them there are two possibilities. Either you dive under the lake and examine the mysterious world under water or you wait until the water level sinks and the cities appear. If the latter is the case, you can even cross the lake on the sunken bridge.

Glamping- short for glamourous camping, describes an exotic fashion trend in the travel industry since the beginning of the 21st century. Glamping is a combination of the English terms “glamour” and “camping” and describes a luxurious variant to a simple camping holiday, but at the same time it is a successful alternative to a hotel holiday. Because unlike hotel holidays or AirBnb apartments, Glamping rental properties are located in the middle of the countryside on the campsite, a little away from the normal pitches. Glamping was created with the idea of combining a luxurious holiday with a holiday close to nature. But Glamping does not mean that you forget the environment because of all the luxury. Glamping also offers a good start for camping beginners, as you don’t have to give up the usual standards and still get to know life in the countryside and on the campsite. A Glamping holiday is also suitable for families. Kids can spend a lot of time in the fresh air and play outside. Self-catering means that the family always remains flexible. This is one of the things that makes camping so much more attractive than a hotel holiday.

What is glamping? The best glamping accommodations worldwide

Glamping stands for “glamourous camping”, meaning glamorous and luxurious camping. Glamping is especially popular with people who do not want to sacrifice a certain standard during their holiday and still care for the environment. Glamping is relatively new, but it already has many followers and has gained a foothold in the tourist industry. The accommodations are not at all reminiscent of tent camps. They are rather spacious motorhomes or tents with comfortable beds, private bathrooms and high-quality designer furniture. There are also extraordinary accommodations as Indian tipis or tree houses. An advantage to normal camps is that you do not have to bring your own tent. Your accommodation is directly on site. Glamping is especially popular at festivals. The accommodations are also more than respectable from the outside and are mostly situated in a beautiful scenery. This makes Glamping the perfect option for those who want to sleep under the stars and experience nature up close.

Glamping in the USA: Desert landscapes, national parks and much more!

Are you dreaming of a camping adventure in the wilderness of the United States and don’t want to do without luxurious amenities? Then Glamping is the perfect solution for you. The western state of Colorado is known for its versatility. From desert landscapes, national parks to the Rocky Mountins, you’ll find just about everything that makes camping a good time. For the cowboys and cowgirls among us, Texas is the right destination. The endless tarpaulins invite you to spend a camping holiday. In beautiful Oregon on the west coast, there is everything that makes the heart of a nature boy beat faster. From mountains, forests to beaches, you’ll find everything here. Pure relaxation under the starry sky, accompanied by the gentle sound of the sea.

Glamping in South Korea: Beautiful landscapes, luxury and glamour

Korea is known for its mountainous landscape, cherry trees, decades-old Buddhist temples and the brightly colored capital. Glamping in the small village of Bukbang-myeon provides you with variety and something very special. Embedded in the mountains you will find the colourful and extraordinary Banus. Square shapes and a veranda directly at the Noil River await you here. The calming environment will take you out of the hectic of Seoul and let you relax. The Hongcheon-gun region is located in the north of South Korea, almost 1 hour and 10 minutes train ride from the capital Seoul. For a total of 92€ per night you can book a banus here.

Q&A

What is glamping?

The word glamping is a combination of the English terms “glamour” and “camping” and describes a luxurious variant of a simple camping holiday.

Origin of glamping ?

Glamping originated from the idea of combining luxurious and nature-orientated holidays. The trend emerged in the early 2000s in the USA and England and many celebrities, such as Ashton Kutcher, Kate Moss and Jamie Oliver count themselves among Glamping fans.

What exactly is Glamping ?

Glamping is especially popular with people who do not want to sacrifice a certain standard during their holiday and still care about the environment. Glamping also offers a good start for camping beginners, as you don’t have to do without the usual standards and still get to know life in the countryside and on the campsite. But this does not mean that you forget the environment because of all the luxury.

Which Glamping accommodations are there?

Noble and opulently equipped bungalows, with bathrooms

Air conditioning and other comforts

Especially spacious and well equipped mobile homes

Safari tents with wilderness feeling

Tree houses

Converted construction trailer

Luxury Rafts

Those who like to be out in nature will certainly find many motifs, which they would like to capture at this very moment . Beginners in outdoor photography can photograph your hiking environment, landscapes, or other objects successfuly with a few tips. Before the success of a shot, however, there are some basic rules, without whose observance the fun of photography becomes more of an effort.

The optimal starter equipment for outdoor photography

Expensive is not necessarily optimal, this also applies to the camera. Automatic functions such as ISO value, exposure time and aperture must be manually adjustable if necessary. In addition, a camera on which interchangeable lenses can be mounted is optimal. Both requirements are met by digital system cameras or digital SLR cameras. Digital system cameras are easier to handle for hikes, climbing excursions and just as much easier.

These take up very little space in the backpack or hand luggage and are hardly noticeable in terms of weight. For the equipment it also applies that there should not be too much. A beginner is better off using only those accessory elements that they can easily handle in the great outdoors. Even professionals only carry a few accessories on their hikes to make them as handy as possible. Important are interchangeable lenses and a tripod suitable for off-road use (best folded up small enough for the backpack). External flashes can be useful, but are only suitable for outdoor photography if the user is able to use them advantageously.

Outdoor photography – know the technology well, then use it

The available functions are explained in the manual of each camera. Many of them are automatic, some can also be selected manually. Before the first outdoor use, exercise photos according to the manual instructions are a good training and in any case recommended. But not everything that is possible is also used in nature.

It is therefore important to master a few important functions well and to gradually get back to the others as the photos of the hike gradually become more professional. Knowledge of the ISO value, aperture and exposure time is crucial. Convenient photographers can leave automatic settings to the digital camera here. But it is more creative to set the values manually in order to capture the photo object in the best possible way.

video tutorials as tutoring

If the information in the manual and your own experiments are not sufficient at first, then video tutorials on certain camera models are helpful. This can even be researched before a purchase decision is made: Which models can be learned most quickly with these tutorials? RAW formats are better suited for outdoor images than JPG. In RAW format, the images still contain all image information in uncompressed form.

This corresponds to the classical recording in the negative, which is developed only afterwards. Also RAW formats are developed only then, however virtually, thus with appropriate software. Managing outdoor photos is a learning process that takes place only after the image has been captured. Editing and managing gradually lead to really ambitious amateur photographers “shooting” better and better pictures on a permanent basis. This also includes experiments in the wild, for example changing perspectives (as intuitively as possible instead of according to doctrine), intentional disturbance motifs during a shot and of course more than one photo of each experiment.

Result: new, fascinating motifs can be discovered everywhere in nature

Outdoor photography offers endless possibilities for exciting photos in the middle of nature due to the diverse landscapes. Beginners should buy rather handy, light cameras and only the most necessary accessories. This can be expanded at will once the user has learned the best way to use the camera. For really beautiful nature shots, the amateur photographer should also consider the possibilities of the subsequent image editing and management.

Romantic towns, mountains, beaches – Slovenia offers about everything you could want for your summer holiday. The small country bordering Croatia is nevertheless not yet besieged by mass tourism! That’s why it’s the perfect place to just switch off. The best way to explore the idyll of the country is with a motorhome or tent, and above all you are always flexible. Doesn’t one like it in that place right now or wants to see something new? No problem, you pack your things together, sit down in your car and the tour continues. Since the distance to Slovenia is very long depending on where you start in Germany, it is advisable to make a stop in between.

The highlights of Slovenia

Romantic moments in Bled

https://www.instagram.com/p/BWN3_stgjF-/

This sweet and romantic village, just in the north of the country, is characterized by its beautiful alpine lake. But not only that, in the middle of the lake there is a small island with a church. The village is very small and manageable, but that’s exactly what it is. Everyone in this place simply enjoys the lake with the beautiful church in the middle of the island. Take a stroll and then have dinner in one of the sweet restaurants and the day is perfect.

Absolute nature at Bohinj Lake

Not far from Bled is Lake Bohinj. Unlike Lake Bled, this lake is crystal clear and surrounded by the Julian Alps. Once in the cold water you don’t really want to go out anymore, the lake is so fresh and pure.
But not only swimming in the lake is a popular activity in Bohinj, it is also very worthwhile to unpack your hiking boots and explore the nature, respectively the Triglav National Park.

Ljubljana: The beautiful capital of Slovenia

Don’t forget anything on a trip to Slovenia: Ljubljana.
Slovenia’s capital is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever seen. A small and sweet city, with small streets, canals and bridges where the eye reaches. Just pure romance.
At every corner you will find cute cafés or restaurants and beautiful, modern shops. In Ljubljana you can walk through the city without a plan and simply enjoy the ambience, drink a glass of wine and explore the student quarter. But one does not need to plan many days for this, Ljubljana is manageable and after a day trip one already knows best about it. Important for campers: Here, it is best to book a hotel or an AirBnb apartment. The prices in Slovenia are very reasonable and especially for short stays it is worthwhile to start directly from the centre.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BjC_vcRDD8U/

Discover the caves of Škocjan

There are several caves in Slovenia that can be visited. My favourite are the Škocjan Caves. Since 1986 these have also been UNESCO World Heritage Sites and attract almost 100,000 visitors annually. Reason: The Cerkvenik Bridge over the Canyon. The biggest Europe and third biggest in the world! The cave also has some stalactites to offer.

Small but fine: the coast of Slovenia

From the cave you can immediately continue to the coast of Slovenia. This one is small and there are only three cities: Koper, Piran and Izola.

Koper

Koper is the largest city on the Slovenian coast and is only 10 kilometres from the border with Italy. This can be seen not only in the bilingual street signs and the like, but also in the design of the old town. The picturesque little alleys often remind one of small coastal towns in Italy. In Koper there is the biggest port of Slovenia, and every year there is a jazz festival, “MareziJazz”. For 13 years musicians from all over Europe have come for the musical experience.

Piran

Piran is unique with its small and winding streets in the Venetian style. The village is largely car-free and can therefore best be explored on foot. This place is a must for all Slovenia travellers. The sweet old town attracts tourists every year, but is not overcrowded.

You won’t find a sandy beach in Slovenia, but on hot summer days people only romp around at Piran’s headland. Colourful towels and air mattresses wherever you look – right next to the pedestrian zone. In July the Piraner music evenings are particularly popular. Every Thursday in July, soloists and chamber music ensembles perform in the Minorite Monastery. In general, the city comes alive in summer: the Summer Festival and the Tartini Festival are just two of Piran’s top summer events.

Izola

Izola is located directly between Piran and Koper, so it is a good idea to stay in this small town to get to know the three coastal towns best. It’s more quiet here. A stroll through the old town, a view of the harbour – there is not much more here. Nevertheless, Izola is definitely worth a visit. The fishermen can still be watched at the harbour and especially the water sports attract the people to Izola.

National Park Triglav

At 2,846 metres, Triglav is the largest mountain in Slovenia. Even the Slovenian 50-cent coins depict the peak of Triglav, but Narional Park has so much more to offer. Particularly impressive: the Soca, which stretches through the Julian Alps. A river you can’t imagine turquoise, therefore untouched nature far and wide. A true paradise for fishermen and hikers. The Valley of the Soca has so much to offer: Peace and relaxation with waterfalls, mountains, tributaries, gorges and troughs. But the valley is particularly famous for activities such as hiking, cycling and water sports. Rafting, kayaking, canyoning, fishing, fly-fishing and even winter sports can be practised here.

For those who are not so keen on sports: just grab your bike and explore the area, in the Triglav National Park there is really something to see and discover everywhere.

Very recommendable: with a cable car you can reach the top of the mountain. In good weather you have a beautiful view of the valley, but beware: in bad weather you prefer to stay down because you can’t see through the clouds.
