South Korean TikToker

K-Pop is very popular among many young people around the world. The term is derived from English and means “Korean successful music”. The bands usually consist of several girls or boys. The popularity of K-Pop is also reflected on TikTok. Namely, the most successful accounts of South Korea there are K-pop groups like BTS and Blackpink. I got to talk to Adelina, a model from Cologne at a shoot and ask her questions about her start in the fashion industry, her highlights of her current career and her plans for the future. She takes you on a journey from Asia to Europe and shares the most exciting and funniest stories with us!

She also gives us her ultimate tips for young models and important values for young girls and boys. It’s all about Self-Love & Self-Confidence!

Getting started in modeling – applications & castings

Many girls dream of becoming models, but not everyone knows how to get a foothold in the industry. Before you go on the road and run from casting to casting, you have to apply and hope that you find the right agency that sees in you the potential to train the young girls and then to market.

Adelina applied at the age of 17 to many agencies in Germany and sent her pictures online on the off chance. Of course, the requirements for being a model are more than just luck, in addition to the right height and appropriate dimensions, you must also have charisma or what most call that certain something.

She received her first acceptance from CM Models, who trained Adelina for over 2 years with shoots and assignments like at Fashion Week in Berlin.

Then she was ready to extend her jobs offers to across the wide ocean.

School and modelling – is that possible?

A question that interests not only the models, but especially concerned parents. A modelling career starts pretty young, so it clashes with your school career. I asked Adelina how it is possible to reconcile both, a good school education and modeling. The answer of the graduated high school student was quite clear: It is really doable! Of course, she had to take a leave of absence for some shoots, but still she didn’t neglect school. She graduated from high school and mainly had experiences within Germany during her school time.

After finishing school she started her stays abroad. Her first trip went straight to Asia, Shanghai, where she landed several shoots and jobs. The last trip was to the fashion capital Paris, where she even made it on the cover of a fashion magazine. More about that later!

My personal highlight – Shanghai, Paris & Berlin

Within 2 years, Adelina has not only been able to pick up a lot of modeling knowledge, but has also been able to see large parts of the world. Some of her coolest assignments include the Fashion Weeks in Shanghai and Berlin, as well as her current shoot for the cover of a French fashion magazine!

For herself it was a real culture shock at first, the first time in Asia and all alone! But the experience was indescribable and Adelina also did very well. In Asia the focus is very much on “diversity”, there the European standards like height and measurements are not the most important thing. They don’t ask for the typical beautiful. It’s much more about special characteristics. So it happened that 1.65 m models were with her at castings. Something that would be unimaginable in Europe.

Nevertheless, Paris was just as much a highlight for the young model. It is the dream of all models to shoot in the fashion capital, not to mention the cover of a Parisian fashion magazine. She still finds it hard to put all the experiences and emotions into words. Directly in the first week she got the job. An overwhelming and at the same time exciting feeling. A big difference to Shanghai, but also there she had the complete support from the agency. Many models are very scared at the beginning and worry that they will be alone or have to work under strict observation. The agency in Paris offered a bit of home with its relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Paris Cover – Emotions

“How does it feel to see yourself on the cover of a prestigious magazine?” was my personal highlight of the interview. Finding yourself in the corner newsstand at 19 is not only an accomplishment for your modeling career, but also a completely new feeling. Before, you walk in fashion shows and fashion weeks, but the audience is limited to fashionistas, designers and photographers. Now you’re on the shelves of dozens of newsstands and supermarkets, which means you’re seen everywhere. Whether it’s from teens interested in the week’s beauty tips or the businessman who wanted to give his car a quick fill-up. The reach is different.

When she found out her photos were used, she didn’t know she made the cover. With astonishment and a big grin she took 6-7 pieces for her family, friends and agencies. At first the kiosk woman was confused, but when she recognized Adelina she was happy and congratulated her.

Fashion Week – Berlin, Shanghai & Beijing

The first show was in cooperation with CM Models in Berlin. Others followed in Shanghai, Beijing, Peking. They were two completely different worlds in terms of fashion, feeling and styling. But in both neither excitement nor adrenaline was missing! It is an indescribable feeling to walk in front of the audience, the adrenaline rises, you have to be able to hide it well that now so many and especially so important people are watching you.

That’s also the reason why Adelina prefers catwalks for shoots. At the shoot it is of course always a new experience and exciting, but the atmosphere is more relaxed, mistakes are allowed and it’s not bad if the photographer gives tips for better poses. In the fashion shows on the catwalk, everything has to go perfectly and on the first try.

Plans for the future – modelling & studies

Adelina is still in her year of break, after graduating from high school the year was dedicated to modeling and traveling, yet she wants to enroll in college for the upcoming winter semester. Her plan is not directly related to modeling. She wants to study International Management, but doesn’t want to give up modeling. During the semester break, which is 1-2 months, she wants to model abroad. In the meantime, her assignments are limited to shoots and jobs in Germany. But she is sure that it is possible to combine both. Unlike in school, there is no compulsory attendance and at the time it also fit wonderfully.

She still has time until university starts and she uses it as much as possible for shoots and jobs.

3 tips for beginners

When you start so young, it’s hard to know everything right away. It’s normal that in hindsight you would do things differently. It was important for me to know from Adelina what she would recommend to her younger self with her current experience. She gave me three ultimate tips that would not only help her former self, but young girls and guys now who want to become models.

1. Work on self-confidence
2. Don’t put up with everything
3. Not pretending to please others

“I would tell myself that you have to have a lot of self-confidence from within yourself for the profession. No one should always conform to everything society tells you to do. It’s important to do your thing because only then do you feel more liberated and comfortable. If you try to please everyone else, you won’t be happy. I don’t fit into the typical mold of society either, but being true to myself fulfills me. I would give that to others along the way!”

The perfect look – Be yourself

Fittingly, I had to go into her particular look. Shaved hair on a woman is not only a brave and cool look, but it also attracts a lot of attention, right? I got a cool story directly from China. There, European looks are of course always a phenomenon and it is normal that bright blue-eyed people are always photographed, because this is very different from the norm and is a beauty ideal in the Asian region. Adding short hair was the ultimate trigger for a group of Asians to photograph Adelina on the street.

But even in Germany she gets a lot of looks with her smart look. At the beginning she noticed that very strongly, today she fades it out. For many people the look is hard to classify, that’s how she explains the stares. Nonetheless, she gets a lot of positive feedback, especially on online platforms like Instagram. She is often asked how it came to shaving off her hair and many want to follow her in this step, but have reservations or too little courage. Adelina not only serves as an inspiration, but encourages others to do what their feelings tell them to do.

Her decision to get her hair done also came from her heart and impatience to grow it out again!

At dizzying heights above Kobe

Built close to the water

The city of Kobe is long and narrow, which is due to its location between the coast and mountainous country. As everywhere in Japan, the lack of usable land can be felt in Kobe – but thanks to its proximity to the coast and the sea, the Japanese have managed to build two artificial islands between Kobe and Osaka to expand the base of the Japanese island complex, namely Port Island and Rokkō Island.

The weather in Kobe is characterized by hot summers and cool winters. With an average annual temperature of 15 to 20 degrees Celsius, it can be tolerated here all year round. The hottest phase is in August with an outside temperature of up to 32 degrees – in winter the temperatures rarely go below 0 degrees, so that it hardly ever snows in Kobe.

Incidentally, about 13% of the city’s population is made up of people under 14, 67% of people up to the age of 64 and 20% of people over 65. 44,000 non-Japanese are registered in Kobe, with South Korea and China as the most common foreign nationalities, and Vietnam and America by far.

Nishi – fresh fish from Akashi

Nishi is the westernmost district of Kobes and with almost 250,000 inhabitants the most populous district of the city. Nishi borders the town of Akashi known for its fresh fish – the temple Gessho-ji is located on the 135th meridian east of Greenwitch, which determines the Japanese normal time JST. That is why the JST is also simply called Akashi time in Japan.

Kita – Natural paradise on the mountain Rokko

Due to its mountainous structure, Kita is the most suitable area for hiking in Kobes. The two mountains Rokkō and Maya invite you to take long walks – the Rokkō Alpine Garden, for example, offers an impressive array of colours and plant diversity especially in autumn and is the perfect place for a day out in nature. If you are looking for relaxation, Arima Onsen is the place for you. The hot spring is an absolute insider tip and lies well protected behind the mountain Rokkō By the way, it is one of the oldest sources at all and is already mentioned several times in historical texts from the 8th century. By the way: Rokkō towers above the whole city with a proud 931 meters height!

Tarumi – over the bridge to Awajji

The area around Tarumi was originally not part of the city and was only incorporated in 1946. Tarumi is mainly a residential area and offers few attractions for tourists. However, the AkashiKaikyō bridge, which connects the main island Honshū via Tarumi with southern Awaji on Awajishima, is worth a visit. With a span of 1,991 metres, it is the longest suspension bridge in the world – its actual length is as much as 3,911 metres!

Suma – Summer, Sun, Beach and more!

This municipality is located in the western part of the city along the coast and Osaka Bay. Formerly a picturesque district with beautiful small wooden houses, Suma has not been the same since the strong earthquake in Kobe at the end of the 1990s. But the famous beach complex in Suma Kaihin Kōen Park continues to inspire many visitors all year round, but especially during the summer months of course, and invites them to extensive walks and beach parties.

Nagata – the best shoes in Japan

According to figures, Nagata is the smallest district of the city and the least populated compared to the other eight districts. Nevertheless, with almost 9,000 inhabitants per km² it has the highest population density – the majority of the people here are among Kobes with the lowest income. Nagata is known for its shoe production and is still the leader in Japan. Also worth mentioning is the Nagata Shrine, one of the largest shrines in the city.

Hyōgo – drawn by time

Hyōgo is the historical heart of the city and has been run under various names throughout history. Once the core of Kobe’s business, Hyōgo has never fully recovered since the severe damage caused to the area by the Second World War. In 2004, the municipality was further affected by devastating floods. Nowadays people live here at a population density of 655 inhabitants per km² – a faint reflection of the past.

Chūō – from Motomachi to Harborland and Chinatown

The current business and entertainment centre of the city is clearly Chūō – the city centre Sannomiya, the office and business district Motomachi as well as the popular shopping district Harborland directly at the harbour form the character of the area. The artificial islands Port Island and Kobe Airport are also part of Chūō. Along with Nagasaki and Yokohama, Cobes own Chinatown Ninkanmachi is one of the most important conurbations for residents of Chinese descent in Japan – among Chinese, the term “Tangren Jie” is preferred because of its historically negative use of words.

Nada – Uni, Zoo and Sake Production

Nada is home to Oji Zoo, Oji Stadium and Kobe University. Together with the neighbouring district of Higashinada, Nada is best known for its sake. Adding the annual production rate of rice wine to that of Fushimi in Kyoto, as much as 45% of the country’s total production of sake is produced here!

Higashinada district is located in the eastern part of the city. A large part of the area is the artificial island Rokkō, which was completed in the early 1990s. The Kōnan University and the Canadian Academy, an international university, are located in Higashinada as well as numerous museums, not least of course the Hakutsuru Gallery, named after the great sake producer Hakutsuru. The Okamoto plum garden makes botanists’ hearts beat faster and in May the whole town comes together to celebrate at the Danjiri-Matsuri.

Economic centre Kobe – upswing of the city

Economically, Kobe is an important hub on Japan’s main island Honshu. Large and well-known companies such as UCC have their headquarters in Kobe, but also various companies of the Kawasaki Group and the Mitsubishi Group can be found here. Some Japanese companies have moved to Tokyo over the years, but the city has not lost its appeal for international companies and is home to many successful companies such as the pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly & Company, the consumer goods group Procter & Gamble, Boehringer Ingelheim – the largest research-based pharmaceutical company in Germany – and the Swiss food group Nestlé.

In addition to official city partnerships with Tianjin in China, Philadelphia, USA, and Daegu in South Korea as well as numerous sister cities, the port of Kobe Sister Port is linked to the ports in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and Seattle, USA.

Furthermore, many research institutes are present in Kobe, above all the RIKEN Kobe Institute Center for Development Biology and Medical Imaging Ttechniques. An example for the work on RIKEN – short for “Rikagaku “Rikagaku”, which means physical-chemical institute – is the K-computer, which RIKEN developed together with Fijutsu. With a computing power of 10.51 petaflops, the K-Computer took first place among the fastest computer systems in the world in 2011!

Apart from rice wine, the famous Kobe Beef has its origin in Kobe and is named after cattle of the Japanese breed of Tajima cattle from the region around Kobe. It’s the most expensive beef in the world. The meat impresses with its strong marbling and the low content of saturated fatty acids. Every year in October the music event “Kobe Jazz Street” takes place, but not only culturally the city near Osaka has a lot to offer. Kobe is home to Japan’s first mosque, inaugurated in 1935, and the country’s first golf club, founded in Japan at the beginning of the 20th century. In general, sport is very important in Kobe – it has a rich tradition in baseball, football, rugby, volleyball and wrestling as well as futsal, a variant of indoor football internationally recognised by the World Football Association FIFA, where flying changes in the team’s own area are possible and the ball may not be controlled for more than four seconds when at rest.

In Kobe there is a saying: “If you can’t go to Paris, go to Kobe”, because cosmopolitan and fashion are particularly important here. At the age of 17, the 1.77-meter former high school student Stefanie Giesinger took part in the ninth season of the casting show Germany’s Next Top Model, which aired on ProSieben from February 2014. On May 8, 2014, she won the final. In June 2014 she was on the cover of German Cosmopolitan. As a model she was discovered in Hamburg at a Fanfest for the Football World Cup 2006. The international breakthrough came in the following year, when she was booked exclusively for Calvin Klein. Lena Gercke

At the beginning of 2006, Lena Gercke participated in the first season of the casting show Germany’s Next Top Model broadcast by the TV station ProSieben. In 2008, Hegelmaier took part in the third season of the casting show Germany’s Next Top Model and reached there the 9th Place. In 2009 she was contracted by her mother agency Place. Later, she was also accepted by other international model agencies such as IMG Models in their model charts. Vogue counted Hegelmaier in the spring / summer season 2010 to one of the eight best newcomer models. Meanwhile, she is still a successful model and was the advertising face for campaigns of various brands, including DKNY, Esprit and Swarovski.

Julia Stegner

Stegner was discovered at the age of 14 by the agency boss of Louisa Models, at the Munich Oktoberfest 1999 and signed by her. She first began modeling after completing secondary school at the age of 18. Her breakthrough came in 2003, when she opened the show by Yves Saint Laurent in Paris. Today, she lives in New York and is still a successful model.

Heidi Klum

The career of Heidi Klum began in 1992 with her participation in the Model ’92 competition, in which the then 19-year-old student won against 25,000 competitors and won a $ 300,000 endowed contract as a model for a period of three years. Heidi Klum achieved his breakthrough in 1998 with the image on the front page of the swimwear edition of the US magazine Sports Illustrated with 55 million readers. The high school graduate was discovered in 1990 in Berlin for shots for a travel magazine. In October 1991, Ellen von Unwerth made photographs of Auermann for the British edition of Vogue magazine, and in September 1993, she appeared on the front page of the US edition of this magazine. Meanwhile, she has retired after a successful career.

Claudia Maria Schiffer

In 1987, she rejected her plans to study law when she was discovered in Dusseldorf in Checker’s discotheque by Michel Levaton, managing director of the Model Agency Metropolitan. Her career was a lightning start. Elle Strecken, catwalks for Chanel, Muse by Karl Lagerfeld and finally the Vogue cover. Even today, Schiffer is still one of the most famous models from Germany and a role model for many young girls.
