In the interview, Katharina tells us how she developed from a driving service at her father’s charity golf cup into a passionate golfer, about her little lucky charm “Bäratrix” and how nice it is to build up a network with like-minded people on the course. Katharina gives us exciting tips for beginners, tells us about her best golf course experiences so far and gives us a glimpse into her future and what personal goals she has set for herself as a passionate sportswoman.

Sports Content: Golf, Ski & Tennis

FIV: Maybe you can introduce yourself very briefly in advance so that our readers can get an impression of you. Who are you and what makes your channel?

Katharina: Hi, my name is Katharina Kandel, on social media kacykatharina and I am a native of Munich. On my channel I actually post everything I do from my four-legged friend Picasso, my everyday life, skiing, tennis to lifestyle topics, but most of all golf of course. I think my followers like it that I am authentic and do not pretend. But you’d have to ask my community.

First experience at the golf tournament

FIV: Tell me – How old were you when you first picked up a racket and who introduced you to the sport?

Katharina: I had a golf club in my hand once when I was 16 and had a pro lesson. Since all my friends were doing other sports, I put the club back in the corner. My father organizes a charity golf cup in Velbert every 2 years. I was always assigned to drive the guests back and forth, because I didn’t have a golf license and couldn’t play.

The participants always had “a riesen Gaudi” during the golf round and also after the golf they talked about their golf game and I could not join in. That’s when I decided to get my license so that I could play. So I made the Platzreife and then played the Golf Cup for the first time in 2018. That was my first tournament, but not by default, thank God! That’s how I came to golf and to my passion.

FIV: How nice! I see you always have a little companion with you on the course. Would you like to tell us what the little teddy bear lady is all about?

Always with you: Little lucky charm

Katharina: Golf is one of the few sports, or even the only sport, where you can talk and have fun with your fellow players during the game. You get to know a lot of different people from all kinds of backgrounds and exchange ideas. In this day and age, it’s incredibly important to expand your network, whether it’s inside or outside of the sport. For me, however, the game of golf comes first; building up the network is a great side effect.

FIV: Are you friends with your fellow golfers off the course?

Katharina: I have met many great people while golfing and have become friends for life. It’s nice when you have the same passion and can share it with each other in your free time out in the fresh air. So a clear yes!

Getting started in golf: tips for beginners

FIV: For those who want to try golf now – what would you recommend to beginners, how can they best get started in the sport especially if they don’t know anyone yet?

Katharina: The first thing I would do is look for a golf course near me on the Internet and take a trial course there to see if it’s a sport for me. There you get to know many like-minded people and have the first step in the door. After that, there are courses and you come into contact with more and more people.

I think that golf is one of the most difficult sports. But with good physical and mental training and the necessary passion, golf becomes the most beautiful sport in the world.

Cliché: Golf only for snobs?

FIV: The youth plays soccer, field hockey or dances – What do you think about the statement that golf is not a real sport and only something for snobs?

Katharina: I have to confess that I also played ice hockey and tennis and rode horses when I was young. Now I regret it, because I would have liked to have taken up golf when I was young. Oh, I hear that all the time. Why do you play golf? That’s for older people, isn’t it? Golf isn’t a real sport, they’re all out of touch.

I definitely have to disagree with this biased opinion. I also want to encourage young people to play golf through my outreach, because it’s anything but not a real sport or just something for snobs.

Golf: One of the most difficult sports

I’ll go even further, it’s one of the most difficult sports there is. Of course, it’s not a sweaty sport like tennis, field hockey or soccer, and your pulse doesn’t go to 200 in a few seconds unless you miss the ball for the 10th time. But I can assure you that after 18 holes you are physically and mentally exhausted. Beginners who go for an 18 hole round for the first time notice muscles the next day that they didn’t even know they had.

As for the statement “is only something for snobs” is also not true. Of course, there are always some snobs, but I think there are in every sport.

Golf has become more and more attractive since the Tiger Woods era. I have the feeling that more and more people who used to condemn golf are now taking it up because they realize that it’s a cool sport.

Katharina: Phew, that’s a difficult question. Because every golf course has something special and one is more difficult or easier to play. My decision doesn’t depend on that. I prefer to play on golf courses that have a beautiful panorama and are located in a rural area, whether by the sea, in the mountains or in the foothills of the Alps. My favorite course is my home club Maxlrain.

FIV: What has been one of the most beautiful golf courses you have played so far?

Katharina: The two most beautiful were The Bay Golf Course in Costa Navarino and Club de Golf Alcanada in Mallorca. Whereas, as I said, there are so many great golf courses in Europe and especially around Munich.

Sporty! Katharina keeps fit

FIV: Is golf enough for you as a sport or do you think it’s important to do other activities like jogging to balance things out?

Katharina: It’s very important to do compensatory sports for golf, because it’s already very one-sided. It is best to go to the gym to train and strengthen all muscle groups, especially the back. Cardio training, such as jogging or cycling, is very important for general fitness but also for the cardiovascular system. I balance my workouts with strength training, cardio and tennis. In winter I like to go ski touring or skiing, which keeps me fit.

Important skills and the right choice of outfit

FIV: Are there certain skills that you should definitely bring to the golf course?

Katharina: Coordination, feeling for the ball, desire to run, patience, concentration I think would be an advantage in the beginning.

FIV: Is the outfit choice in golf important for you to fully immerse yourself in your role or are there certain dress codes?

Katharina: For me, the choice of outfit is important. Above all, the outfit should be comfortable, not pinch anywhere, and of course look sporty and pretty. You also have to pay attention to the dress code. It has become much looser nowadays, but a NoGo are jeans and muscle shirts for men. Polos, cloth pants, shorts, skirts, hoodies, dresses and sleeveless tops for ladies (not cut out) etc. are allowed.

Looking to the future: Katharina’s personal goals

FIV: Would you tell me if you have any specific goals you would like to achieve in golf in the coming years?

Katharina: Of course I’ll tell you. I have set myself the goal of getting under HCP 20 and aiming for 15. With a lot of physical and mental training and discipline, I hope it’s doable. I will keep you informed.

Diego’s passion: Golf and how it all began

The sport of golf finds its official beginning in the 16th century. Official because before it was authorized by the Scottish King James IV, it was played by the Scottish society as a form of pastime without any special records. Even when golf was banned by Parliament in 1457, royal permission was granted. Why the ban? Because it was seen as a distraction for soldiers shooting arrows and more people would be involved in the military. The Scottish population played golf despite the ban, and the sport, like soccer, became a fashionable sport in the independent nations of the time. Thus, the modern sport was invented by the Scots before the year 1500 and legalized at a later date. The first game of golf was practiced in 1574 on the Old Course at St. Andrews. The story continued to develop in the 16th century. Through Mary I of Stuart, the sport came to France and then spread around the world.

But a different origin?

However, there are other theories that see the origin of golf in continental Europe. The Netherlands and France are often mentioned. The reason for this is various documentation from the years around 1200, where there are references to games with clubs and balls. There are also such references in ancient Egypt and ancient Rome. Therefore, the origin of this sport is very controversial, but in general, the Scottish people are counted as the inventors.

Fashion and golf: does that go together?

The sport is generally considered very elegant, yet the players, counted as very poorly dressed athletes. At that time, golfers in Scotland and England had to fight against the elements, focusing on protection from water and wind. Therefore, the clothing consisted of kilts and leather. Over the years, fashion continued to evolve. The movie comedy “Caddyshack” in the 80s had a great influence on the golf world. Today, materials are used that block UV rays, are insect repellent, cooling and can be worn like a skin.

Prominent golfers

Among many celebrities are passionate golfers. Actors such as Sean Connery, Kevin Costner, Cameron Diaz, David Hasselhoff and Will Smith share a passion for golf. In the music industry, golf is also a respected sport. Tim Bendzko, Justin Timberlake and Howard Carpendale like to put themselves on the golf course. Footballers like Thomas Müller, Franz Beckenbauer, Michael Ballack and Uli Hoeneß also like to use a club to hit the ball into the hole.

San Diego Pooth Interview

FIV: Thank you for taking the time for our interview after the shoot! Away from fashion, you are now training at the Saddlebrook Academy in Florida, what do you like so much about living in the Sunshine State of the USA?

San Diego: You simply can’t compare Florida with Germany. I like Germany, but for me there is no going back in the long term. My horizon has completely changed here in the U.S. in the last year, my focus is of course on golf. I’m now in Tampa for a year at the Saddlebrook Academy, which exclusively trains golfers and tennis players.

My biggest dream is to become a professional golfer one day.

But there is still a very long way to go until then.

A day in your life

FIV: You are now signed as a model with Elite Models in Miami and CM Models in Germany, you just got signed as well, you had your first cover shoot today, full to-do list! Now you’re back at Saddlebrook Academy in Tampa, what’s a typical day like in your life at the Academy, how do you start your day, how many hours do you spend on the golf course?

San Diego: I get up at 6 a.m. every morning and go for a run. Then I go straight to class and after school there is only golf practice for me. I can’t leave Saddlebrook Academy by myself, which means we athletes are on campus year-round, except when we have vacations or go to tournaments.

Model: What fascinates you about modeling?

FIV: What fascinates you personally about modeling?

San Diego: I’m interested in fashion and I think I have a good taste. Modeling is special, you just have to function and present the goods you’re given in such a way that the customer is satisfied and get exactly the expression he wanted. It’s not about whether you like the clothes yourself or whether you would style yourself that way in private. You just have to deliver. I’ve often been on shoots thinking, “Oh my God who’s going to wear that … and then it was me” (laughs). It’s definitely a cool job. If everything goes well, you travel around the world, earn quite good money and become quite self-confident.

Learn Golf: Your recommendation?

FIV: If I or a reader would like to learn golf, what would be your tip for an easy start? Order golf clubs and practice in your living room, just call the golf course, right?

San Diego: My tip would be to first take a taster course in golf with about 10 hours, because this allows you to determine exactly whether you enjoy the sport and remain interested in it. So you know after the course in any case, whether you want to invest money in the sport, because a golf equipment is very expensive and you should buy it only if you have fun.

Hotspots Florida! Your tips?

FIV: Of course, we also have a big USA special in this issue of the magazine. For our next trip to Florida, what’s your favorite place, what location should we definitely check out? What makes this place so special for you?

San Diego: If you ever travel to Florida, you should definitely check out Miami. This city is really impressive and has great hotspots like the Wynwood Walls. This is an artists’ district with cool street art, great cafes, stores and you meet exciting people from all over the world. In Miami Beach I also like that there is a beach with an outdoor fitness facility. Here you meet many young and especially very trained people.

I also really liked the Cuban quarter “Little Havana” in Miami. There is a lot to see here, including of course many Latin American restaurants, but also many fruit stands and cigar stores. You can really immerse yourself in Cuban culture, which I found very interesting.

Next destination: The College Scholarship

FIV: What are your current goals, what would you like to achieve soon?

San Diego: Playing as many tournaments as possible here in Tampa. That’s fun, of course, but it’s also very exhausting because you have to be constantly focused and highly concentrated. I’m using this year not only to find out whether I really have what it takes to be a professional golfer, but also as an orientation year to secure my college place, because I want to start my studies in 2023. My biggest dream would be to win a scholarship, but that’s a very ambitious goal.

Model contract with Elite Miami

FIV: Two model agencies have signed you, Elite Models in Miami and CM Models in Germany. Could you have imagined that a year ago?

San Diego: Honestly, no (laughs), but of course I was very happy that Elite Models Miami signed me, even though I couldn’t imagine it at the beginning, but I thought I have nothing to lose and then the joy was great. At the moment I’m still waiting for my work visa for the USA, which is not so easy to get, but I’m on it and my agency Elite Models Miami supports me. In Germany I have already had a few shoots, which was a lot of fun and I have learned a lot. In terms of modeling, I’m still an absolute newcomer (laughs).

Self-employment: Earning your own money

FIV: One could think that you are slowly standing on your own two feet. How important is it for you to earn your own money?

San Diego: It is very important to me to earn my own money. I don’t want to be dependent on my parents for the next few years. Since I was thirteen, I have always worked in between jobs, my mother has always brought me to various TV productions such as Comeback or away (RTL, 3 years) or also in the Sky advertising. She opened some doors for me, but as she always says, I had to go through them myself. I learned a lot and was very grateful for these opportunities. In the meantime I am under contract with AB-Glanz Management in Hamburg and of course I manage my model jobs myself and am happy about every order. I just want to earn my own money, but golfing and schooling have priority, so I have to manage the balancing act no matter what.
