Store Events: Modelcastings & Closet Sales

Regular store events make the store a true oasis for fashion lovers and creative minds. Influencers and fashionistas often organize closet sales in the boutique. During my exploration tour at Berlin Fashion Week, the boutique even served as the venue for an exclusive model casting in collaboration with the renowned model agency CM Models.

Limited availability: Unconventional opening hours

But what makes it special is not just the fashion itself, but also the unconventional opening hours: The boutique only opens its doors three days a week, for four hours at a time, to welcome fashion enthusiasts. From Thursday to Saturday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., fashion lovers have the chance to immerse themselves in the world of Y2K style.

Brand success story

The brand belongs to the French Mulliez Group, whose subsidiaries include Orsay, Auchan, Decathlon and Leroy-Merlin. The group is still owned by the French Mulliez family. In 1971, the brand was founded by three textile specialists who were enthusiastic about the then emerging trend of women’s trousers. They wanted to expand the trend further. Their designs of women’s pants were considered innovative even to the point of revolutionary. When the brand’s first store opened in 1972 in Lille, France, the response from customers was accordingly overwhelming. By 1982, Pimkie managed to expand and grow as a brand very successfuly, opening hundreds of stores in France. From 1988, Pimkie also managed to conquer the European market and opened numerous stores in Europe, as well as in Germany. In 1990 the first Pimkie stores opened in Spain and in 1994 the first stores opened in Italy. In 2006, the brand also launched its online store, since then you can buy your favorite fashion from Pimkie online.

Demna Gvsalia’s first haute couture collection was also the house’s first haute couture collection in 53 years! Proudly presenting the characters of the Simpsons family at Paris Fashion Week. Marge wears a pompous dress in gold, which is a reference to the old glamour of the haute couture master Cristóbal Balenciagas himself. But the other characters on the show also wear clothes that fit their characters. Homer, for example, has been given a bright red down jacket in which he strongly resembles rapper Kanye West. Even the mother of fashion Anna Wintour can’t be missing from the frontrow, looking flawless as always even in yellow.

Marge is clearly enjoying her grand entrance and, as the mother of such a chaotic family, she deserves it!

Fashion designer Tom Ford is shaping an exciting success story. As a former art student, today’s successful man paved his way to becoming a designer for Gucci and YSL, until he founded his own brand in 2005. We introduce you to Ford’s inspiring career as a famous fashion designer and director.

Youth & Education

Tom Ford was born in Austin, Texas in 1961. In the course of his youth, Ford tried out many courses of study, including art history and art, which, however, did not make him happy. Even at a young age, the 59-year-old was interested in fashion. Thus, in his early 20s, Ford applied for internships with well-known designers, eventually landing a much-coveted internship with fashion label Chloé. During this time, he moved to Los Angeles where, in addition to many internships, he also took on modeling jobs, mostly for television commercials.

However, Tom Ford was determined to have a degree, so after his time in LA he decided to study architecture at Parsons School of Design in New York. He completed a year abroad at the French partner university in 1984 and 1985. Since Fort had discovered his passion for fashion, he took all his electives in fashion design. In 1986, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in architecture and interior design.

Marc Jacobs, Chloé, Gucci & YSL

For Tom Ford, designer Calvin Klein has always been a great role model. After his internship at Chloé, Fort was sure: he also wanted to enter the fashion industry to become a designer. After graduating from Parsons, he applied to Calvin Klein several times but was not hired. He had luck with the Korean designer Cathy Hardwick, where he worked for her in New York as a design assistant. Ford landed a second success in 1988 with Marc Jacobs, who hired him as a designer for the Perry Ellis jeans line.

But how did Tom Ford get his job as creative director at luxury brand Gucci? Ford was recruited 12 years after working at Marc Jacobs, by former Bergdorf Goodman chief buyer Dawn Mello to work for Gucci as a designer in Milan. The young designer accepted the job offer and moved to Milan.

Since Ford did his job as a designer at fashion label Gucci very well, he was appointed design director in 1992. Two years later, he was appointed creative director. In 2000, Gucci and fashion brand Yves Saint Laurent merged. Ford took on the role of women’s prêt-à-porter designer at YSL in Paris, in addition to his post at Gucci.

Emergence of the designer brand Tom Ford

In April 2005, Ford announced the creation of the Tom Ford brand. Domenico De Sole, who was former president and CEO of Gucci Group, joined Fort. In the same year, the designer announced that he would collaborate with the Markolin Group to manufacture and sell eyeglass frames and sunglasses. He also formed an alliance with Estée Lauder to co-create the Tom Ford beauty brand. In 2007, his first flagship store opened at 845 Madison Avenue in New York. The opening ceremony coincided with the debut of Tom Ford’s men’s and accessories collection. The long-awaited showcase of the womenswear collection took place in September 2010. Since then, the Tom Fort brand has enjoyed a strong reputation, with quality and elegance combining to create a luxury fashion label. With his previous experience at Gucci, YSL and Marc Jacobs, the designer had the perfect prerequisites to start his own brand.

From fashion designer to film director

In 2009, the designer created the film “A Single Man”. Many then wondered why Ford suddenly became a director instead of just focusing on the fashion business. What many didn’t know, however, was that Tom Ford sees himself as a designer whose true artistic side lives from filmmaking. Doubts about his film career were finally laid to rest when it became known that the designer was making his directorial debut for the famous actors Colin Firth and Julianne Moore. Seven years later, Ford released “Nocturnal Animals,” his long-awaited second film. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams, the designer once again created a highly acclaimed film, which even earned him a Golden Globe nomination for his direction.

Family & Spouse

The now 59-year-old designer, has lived with Richard Buckley since 1987. Buckley, former editor-in-chief of Vogue Hommes International, met Ford at a fashion show in 1986. At the time, Richard Buckley was living in Paris but moved to Italy to join Ford as he was suffering from cancer. The editor-in-chief gave up his job at Vogue as the commute became u exhausting for him with his illness.

Tom and Richard became parents for the first time in 2012. Together they gave birth to their son Alexander John Buckley Ford in Los Angeles. Two years later, the couple decided to get married. Now the fashion designer lives with his family alternately in Los Angeles, London and New York.

The creation of the fashion label Ted Baker

Ray Kelvin once made a name for himself in 1988 as a shirt specialist. Humor has always been Ray’s greatest strength. The designer also created his fashion then and now according to this motto. This is reflected in the magnificent patterns of his designer pieces and in his store concept at that time. Nowadays, the colorful bags and flowery dresses are what you would imagine under the brand Ted Baker. In the past, Ray was known for something completely different. After his first store offered a laundry service for every shirt he bought, people began to notice him. No Ordinary Designer Label’, they called Ray’s shirt brand. Customers always liked to go to the designer because his personality was part of the business. Ray opened his first store in Glasgow, Scotland, closely followed by King Street, Manchester and the Nottingham Exchange Arcade. Ray also had an eye for quality from the beginning, which is why he showed a great attention to detail. And it was worth it! Although the then 33-year-old had never believed that his label would ever become so famous, he quickly felt his success and became one of the leading lifestyle brands in the UK.

Ted Baker: The ‘No Ordinary Designer Label

But why did Ray christen his fashion label with the name Ted Baker? Ray first heard the name Ted Baker in a conversation. Since he was not sure at the beginning of his label that this would not be a total flop, he decided to keep his own name out of the brand. The designer saw this name as his personal, made-up alter-ego and thought it was appropriate. And all this came about during a fishing trip!

An idea becomes a success story

• 1987: The idea for a global brand came to Ray while fishing.

Ray’s unique marketing strategy

Advertising via television or posters? Ted Baker used nothing of the sort to promote his products. Word of mouth, that was the key to Ray’s marketing strategy. So there were original concepts and giveaways that made people aware of Ted Baker. Since this strategy was not common at that time, the brand name spread rapidly. The awarding of “Paxo Stuffing” at Christmas, chocolate bunnies at Easter or in 2006 special World Cup soccer tickets ensured Ted Baker’s success. Without a single advertising campaign, the designer managed to develop into an international fashion label.

Ray Kelvin’s resignation after harassment allegations

Hugs and ear massages: Many of his employees accused this behavior in 2019. CEO Ray Kelvin is said to have hugged employees against their will, as well as urged them to sit on his knees and have their ears massaged.  The 62-year-old did not confirm these accusations. Despite all of this, he resigned from his position as CEO with immediate effect, after numerous media outlets demanded Ray’s resignation. COO Lindsay Page, is to continue to run the company in his place. But what exactly is the truth of the accusations?

“I’ve decided it’s the right step to leave Ted to allow the company to focus on being the outstanding brand it is. So it can face 2019 with fresh energy and a new spirit”.

Ray Kelvin has always been a mystery. At official photo events, the inventor of the fashion label liked to keep a hat or even a shoe in front of his face to stay in the background as much as possible. There are also no interviews with the designer, which underlines his anonymity. And no wonder, hardly anyone knows that behind the luxury brand hides this somewhat quirky guy. His sense of humor also shaped his success story, but in the end he was accused of harassment. According to him, hugs have probably always been part of the corporate culture. But they were never imposed, he says.

What does the brand’s future look like?

After inventor Ray Kelvin left the company, he stayed out of the spotlight for a while. Lindsay Page, the company’s new CEO, now has power over the fashion label. But what happens to the brand now? Shortly after the accusations about Ray’s misconduct, the company’s stock fell sharply. The share price already dropped from GBP 32 (EUR 35.4) per share in March 2019 to GBP 18 (EUR 19.9). At the close of trading, the value was below GBP 15 (EUR 16.6). However, the figures recovered again after the scandal was slowly forgotten.

How do you look slimmer and slimmer?
