Here you will find peace, sea air, friendly people, wonderful nature and beaches. Directly on the sea of the North Sea, directly on the beach of the Baltic Sea, Denmark, my vacation tips for Denmark in a vacation home!

Vacation home in Denmark: What to look for?

Let’s start with my vacation home checklist! Then to the question: Baltic Sea or North Sea? Finally, my little Denmark review from the summer! Denmark is a charming country known for its stunning nature, friendly inhabitants and cozy vacation homes. If you’re planning to spend a vacation home vacation in Denmark, there are some tips and advice that can help you make your stay memorable. It doesn’t always have to be Airbnb, there are also many good local vacation home portals. When choosing a vacation home in Denmark, consider how many people you need to accommodate and what amenities you want, such as a kitchen, a terrace or a garden. But above all, look for reputable cottage portals and reviews when you book.

Choose the right region

Denmark has many different regions with different characteristics. Consider whether you want to stay on the coast, near cities or in rural areas to choose the region that best suits your vacation goals.

My first vacation home in Denmark: Experiences

Experiences say more than 1,000 words! My highlight was the sea, the fresh air, the dunes and more.

What did I like best?

Sea air, the sea right in front of the door, dunes

Peace and space, also for my dog (Pomeranian)

Swimming pool and sauna in the house

Quickly and easily accessible

Two floors, space for children and parents

My trip to Denmark and my stay in this vacation home on the Baltic Sea were simply unforgettable. The fresh sea air and the breathtaking sea view I had right outside my door were truly magical. The dunes and the endless walk on the beach made it a perfect place to just unwind.

The peace and quiet and the open space were another highlight. My little dog, a Pomeranian, had as much fun here as I did. He could romp in the dunes and we enjoyed extended walks on the beach.

The cottage itself was excellently equipped. The indoor pool and sauna provided the perfect opportunity to relax. The fact that it was on two floors allowed my children and I to enjoy our privacy.

The location of the house was very convenient, just a short drive from many attractions. And getting there was also a breeze.

Overall it was a perfect vacation and I can’t wait to return here again!

So beautiful! The beach:

Cheap camping with the family: roof tent & accessories

FIV: Thanks for letting us meet for the interview. What tips do you have for families who want to save money on vacation and still have an unforgettable experience?

Campwerk: One idea to save money and still have a great camping vacation is to choose nearby destinations with your family first to reduce gas costs. You can save further with seasonal deals and cheap campsites, as well as by planning your own meals and free activities. You can also learn more little tips and hacks by sharing with other campers.

Accessories & Equipment: What you need in any case!

FIV: What camping equipment and accessories do you think are indispensable for a successful trip with the whole family in the roof tent?

Campwerk: Even if you want to save money, there are some things you should definitely take with you. These include a spacious roof tent, comfortable sleeping bags and sleeping pads, a folding camping table with enough chairs, cooking utensils, a camping lamp or headlamp, a cooler or cooler bag, a tool and repair kit, mosquito repellent, a well-stocked first aid kit, and sun and rain protection. If you choose high-quality products, you have more chance of them lasting a long time, even if they cost more at first.

Advantages of the roof tent: No hotel costs

FIV: What advantages do you see in traveling with a roof tent, especially compared to traditional accommodations?

Campwerk: Compared to other accommodations, rooftop tent camping offers cost-effective lodging options because you don’t have to book expensive hotels or vacation homes. Traveling with a roof tent is a great way to save money during your adventures. Moreover, you save on travel expenses and at your destination you still have to spend money on bus and the like. This way you can reduce other expenses and use your travel funds for other activities and experiences.

Destinations & campsites: Tips for places & how to get there

FIV: First, prospective campers should pick a destination. What routes or destinations do you recommend for families who want to travel budget-consciously with a roof tent?

Campwerk: In Germany, natural areas such as Saxon Switzerland in the east and the Black Forest in the southwest offer inexpensive or free campsites for an intensive nature experience. With impressive rock formations and spectacular mountain scenery, these regions allow for inexpensive camping along scenic routes. Travelers can explore rural areas and avoid tourist strongholds. Find destinations and camping tips here: Camping in Germany.

Choosing campgrounds outside of expensive major cities and using permitted wild camping options offer additional savings opportunities.

Search for the right campsite: planning

FIV: In order for a camper to find a suitable campsite, he should plan well. What experiences have you had when it came to finding inexpensive campsites or overnight accommodations for families?

Campwerk: It is often helpful for families to use online platforms to search for cheap campsites and accommodation. There are dedicated websites and apps that list campgrounds, RV sites and cheap accommodations and offer user-friendly search functions. Additionally, travel blogs and forums can provide valuable information and recommendations from other families who have had experiences with cheap campsites.

It is advisable to plan and book early, especially in high season, to get the best prices and ensure there are enough available sites. Camping outside of tourist hotspots and taking advantage of wild camping opportunities in countries where it is allowed can also save you money. For that, you just need to do thorough research beforehand.

With these 5 steps you should find a cheap campsite:

Special websites & apps list campsites

Search travel blogs & forums for valuable recommendations

Choose campsites outside of tourist hotspots

Take advantage of opportunities for wild camping in permitted countries

Early planning & booking in high season for best prices

Get off the campsite: Cheap vacation activities

FIV: As a rule, a camper doesn’t just stay at the campsite. What inexpensive activities and attractions in nature offer families with a roof tent to keep their travel costs low, but still have unforgettable experiences?

Campwerk: You can go hiking and walking in nature, have leisurely picnics and barbecues, or swim in natural waters. Stargazing under a clear sky or wildlife watching are also inexpensive ways to discover the beauty of nature. You can also find natural playgrounds for your kids, try geocaching, or check out local festivals and events for cultural experiences.

These inexpensive activities lend themselves to nature:

Hikes & walks in nature

Host cozy picnics & barbecues

Bathing in natural waters

Stargazing under clear sky

Wildlife watching

Discovering natural playgrounds for children

Geocaching as a cheap leisure activity

Cultural experiences through festivals & events

Arrival & car ride: save fuel

FIV: What are some ways families can reduce the cost of fuel during their rooftop tent trip while minimizing their environmental impact?

Campwerk: You can do this by carpooling, driving more economically, and traveling in the off-season, when fuel prices are often cheaper. Additionally, drive moderately on the highway, have your vehicle regularly updated to new standards, choose campsites close to your destinations and environmentally friendly means of transportation such as bicycles. Not only your wallet will be happy, but also the environment.

Cooking & living on the campsite

FIV: How can families make their meals inexpensive yet delicious during a rooftop tent trip?

Campwerk: For this, you can rely on simple recipes and use staples such as rice, pasta and legumes. You can often buy fresh and local produce at affordable prices at local markets. Good supplies and the use of a camp stove allow you to prepare meals yourself, while disposable grills create an inexpensive barbecue experience.

Camping-friendly foods like canned goods and snack bars are convenient, and using shared kitchens at campgrounds can further reduce costs. Through smart planning, recycling leftovers, and additionally using water sparingly, families can conserve their travel funds.

So you can cook economically even on the campsite:

Simple recipes with staple foods (rice, pasta, legumes).

Buy affordable, fresh & local produce at local markets

Use camping stove for home prepared meals

Disposable grills for cheap barbecue experience

Camping-friendly food (canned food, snack bars)

Use communal kitchens at campsites

Clever planning, use of leftovers & economical use of water

Special Tip: Organization & Do-It-Yourself Ideas

FIV: What special tips do you have for our readers at the end?

Campwerk: For cheap travel you need above all careful planning and organization. When camping, you usually have less space than in a hotel. That’s why you should only take what you need, but also make sure that you don’t have to buy too much new to save money. Find out about the fees for sanitary facilities and toilets. At most campsites they are free, but at some you will have to pay for them.

In addition, weatherproof clothing and a sturdy tent should be kept on hand to be prepared for unpredictable weather. If you invest once in good quality, you have less follow-up costs.

Extra tips for DIY campers: Everything self-made

FIV: What creative solutions and DIY ideas are there for making inexpensive and comfortable camping gear yourself?

Campwerk: There are plenty of creative DIY ideas to make inexpensive yet comfortable camping gear for families with a rooftop tent. Homemade storage solutions, camping furniture made from pallets, DIY insulation, mosquito screens and curtains can organize storage space and improve comfort. Plus, families can create a DIY camping kitchen and assemble a DIY repair kit to make their rooftop tent trip more enjoyable and affordable.

One of the most frequent pictures in Germany is taken here in the elevator. Since our editor was in town to plan the Fashion Week, she didn’t miss the chance to stop here on her trip – and stayed for two days. and spent two days at the 25Hours Hotel Cologne The Circle. Find out how she fared during her stay at one of the most popular hotels in the media metropolis and what makes the hotel a coveted hotspot for Instagram lovers here!

Twenty Five Hours Hotel: Arrival & Location

The 25Hours Hotel is located in the middle of Cologne’s city centre. Friesenplatz is nearby, as is Friesenstraße – one of the most popular places in Cologne to have fun. A few minutes’ walk away is also the city centre, perfect for shopping. There are also parks nearby and, of course, a lot of historical things to do in Cologne – from the world-famous cathedral to the chocolate museum.

Here again the location on the map and the address:

Address: Im Klapperhof 22-24, 50670 Cologne, Germany

Our experience at 25Hours The Circle: Check-In, Stay & Co!

Once arrived, it’s time for the check-in! It’s only a few minutes from the main train station to the hotel and suddenly you’re standing in front of it: A gigantic round building with over ten floors – the hotel is huge and is considered one of the tallest buildings in Cologne’s city centre. This also gives you a unique view, not only from your room, but also from the restaurant and the rooftop bar! Absolute eye-catcher: The small water ponds on the left and right at the entrance to the foyer. In a relaxed atmosphere, you can let the hotel take effect on your arrival:

Once again through the revolving door, briefly through the check-in and there it is! The futuristic elevator that I’ve seen at least 100 times on Instagram:

Shopping and sightseeing

I was also in Cologne for work and so I got a few insider tips for you, directly from our editorial office, here in Cologne! Let’s start with what everyone loves: shopping!

Shopping tips in Cologne and popular shopping streets

Looking for the best shops and shopping streets in Cologne? Then you should definitely go to the city centre. The biggest shopping street is the Schildergasse. Here you can find everything from Zara and H&M to flagship stores of Apple and Nespresso. Around this big shopping street you will of course find many small alleys, small shopping arcades and of course luxury boutiques.

Must-See! The historic Cologne Cathedral

What you should definitely see as a tourist is the Cologne Cathedral. If you arrive by train, you will find it right next to the main station. Especially the size of the cathedral, as well as its gothic architecture invite you to marvel. At the same time, you immediately ask yourself how something so big could have been built so early? After all, the cathedral is over 800 years old. Tip. If possible, visit the cathedral on weekdays and in the early hours, not in the afternoon or on weekends. Here, the city center is absolutely crowded.

Tip: Weekdays are perfect for a trip to Cologne’s landmark!

Walking along the Rhine: Chocolate Museum & Rheinauhafen

Going for a walk? Sounds boring at first, but it’s beautiful on the Rhine!

Ruby Ella in Cologne – Sophisticated designs, a prime location, friendly staff and unique flair in a class of its own! This is how the new Lean Luxury Hotel Ruby Ella in the media metropolis Cologne can be described. Here you can find out how our editor fared during her stay there – from check-in to the room to breakfast the next morning. Ruby Goes Late-Night – Welcome to Ruby Ella!

Ruby Ella Hotel: Arrival & Location

We all know it: the day at the office was long, the hour-long train ride tiring and the suitcase heavy. The Ruby Ella is not only centrally located. It was also easy to get here, both by car and by public transport.

Address: Hohenzollernring 79, 50672 Cologne, Germany

The hotel is somewhat hidden in the courtyard of the former Capitol. Not far away: the city centre, as well as the popular Belgian quarter. Absolute plus point: the quietness at night despite the proximity to bars, clubs & co – beauty sleep is guaranteed here!

Our experience at Ruby Ella: Arrival, stay & Co!

Even the first view of the property is convincing. The building was designed by architect Christoph Ingenhoven. The absolute eye-catchers here are the almost 100 trees and shrubs, which are planted offset on the façade of the hotel, as well as on the roof – a concept by landscape designer Enzo Enea.

Stunning design: sustainability meets entertainment

As soon as you arrive in the reception hall, you are immersed in the world of late night entertainment – trendy café, cosy bar and modern self-check in included. While the neon signs and cosy vintage furniture are reminiscent of the nostalgic charm of the late-night shows of the 90s, the high ceilings and concrete walls give the hotel an urban charm in a class of its own.

Shortly through the entrance area, and I was already at the reception or bar:

Self Check-In: How it works

I was especially impressed by the self check-in. After I was greeted in a friendly manner, I only had to leave my contact details (with the most modern touch screen of course). Since I did not use a daily room cleaning, I was also directly issued a voucher for a free drink at the bar and printed my room card. And all this in only 2 minutes. In short queries, the young ladies and gentlemen of the hotel staff were always with advice and smile on the lips to the side.

See for yourself how quick and easy the self check in at Ruby Hotel is:

By the way: Just as unproblematic was my check-out later. Simply throw the card in the box provided for this at the reception and the journey home can start.

Spacious & bright rooms with urban flair

Once checked in, I went straight to the fourth floor. If you want to enter the colorful world à la ‘Ruby goes Late Night’, you can choose between five room categories.

NEST Room (17 sqm)

COSY Room (18sqm)

LOVELY Room (19sqm)

WOW Room (28 sqm)

LOFT Room (32 sqm)

The rooms also have a great feel-good factor – they are furnished in typical Ruby Ella style: cosy, urban and yet with a touch of vintage. The windows are large and allow you to wake up to sunshine in the morning. The walls are painted in bright white and the floor is made of solid oak. Absolute eye-catchers here are not only the respective design highlights above the bed, but also the glass rain shower in the middle of the room.

The furnishings are of high quality, each room is lovingly decorated and the interior design is impeccable!

Delicious breakfast in the morning

To start the day right, the Ruby Ella Hotel offers a balanced breakfast with buffet, freshly squeezed orange juice and a variety of coffee specialties. Whether hot cappuccino, small espresso or latte macchiato with oat milk – everyone will find something here! In a relaxed atmosphere you can start your morning and plan your day.

Conclusion: Full marks for the Ruby Ella!

The Ruby Ella in Cologne – A hotel in a class of its own! The central location allows the proximity to cafés, bars, clubs and shops and the staff is friendly and always concerned about the well-being of the guest. While early risers can enjoy aromatic coffee and a colorful breakfast buffet, the bar delights in the evening and at night with a variety of delicious cocktails and long drinks.

Here is a summary of our experience:

Central location

Night rest despite city centre proximity

Friendly staff

Comfortable and high quality furnishings

Very good breakfast menu

Variety of cocktails

Extra plus: Stunning interior design

The Ruby Ella proves that functionality can also be combined with clever design and a great deal of comfort, delighting not only business travellers and commuters, but also families and holidaymakers.

Our rating: 5 / 5 stars!

Activities & excursions in Merano

In Merano there are numerous excursion destinations and sights, which are worth a visit in any case. Here we present two specific destinations and a few other activities in the popular spa town. Right next to the castle are the beautiful botanical style castle gardens. When the castle was badly damaged after the two world wars, it fell into disrepair and only came back after renovation in 2002-2003. Since then, Trauttmansdorff Castle has become a popular tourist destination in memory of Sissi and is known throughout Europe.

Botanical Gardens of Merano: highlight with extraordinary flora

In total, there are four different ways to get to and from the island of Sylt. We show you here which they are, so you can choose the right choice for your journey.

Arrival by train

From Germany and Austria you have the possibility to reach Sylt via some major cities. Travel relaxed by train and get off at one of the three stations on the island.

Arrival by plane

Sylt has its own airport in Westerland, which is why you can reach the island easily and, above all, quickly by plane. Many regional airlines fly to the island from several major cities.

Arrival by car

Although there is no road leading to the island, you can still reach Sylt by car with the help of the Autozug. To do this, you can simply drive as far as possible in the direction of Sylt and then use the Autozug or the ferry to cross the sea together with your car.

Arrival by boat

You also have the possibility to reach the island with the help of a ferry. Enjoy the pleasant North Sea air during the crossing and take a relaxed boat ride to the island. You also have the option of taking the ferry by car, so you are more flexible during your holiday.

Places & communities: Where is it most beautiful?

On Sylt there are some beautiful places and communities where you can spend your holidays or buy a property. Westerland is considered the center of the island. In this place you will find a wide range of leisure activities for the day or night. The club scene is also very pronounced here. The municipality of List is considered the northernmost town in Germany with some beautiful beaches and dune landscapes. Here you can surf, swim and play with your dog on the beach. The town of Kampen is considered an absolute celebrity hotspot. In this small community you can meet the elite at the most exclusive and luxurious parties and events. “See and be seen” is the motto here.

Westerland: Centre of the island

Westerland is considered the center of the island of Sylt, as you can experience a lot here during the day and at night. The municipality has its own airport and train station. Especially for teenagers and young adults there is a wide range of leisure activities such as water sports, events, restaurants, bars, shops and an 8 km long sandy beach. In Westerland there are also many clubs where you can party until late at night. Especially the Sandstraße and de Paulstraße are known for a wide range of bars and pubs. Here you will meet a colourful and lively society. For holidays with children, the place offers a leisure pool or an aquarium.

List: many beaches and a great offer

The municipality of List is located in the very north of the island of Sylt and offers a beautiful landscape with dunes and beaches. If you are looking for a relaxing holiday, you should definitely take a look at this place. Here you will find two lighthouses, a harbour and several restaurants directly on the coast. List offers perfect beaches for surfers, nudists, dog owners or shallow water for children. The offer for leisure and recreational activities is very diverse in this place.

Kampen: Hotspot of the elite

The small village of Kampen, with just 700 inhabitants, is located north of Westerland and is surrounded on both sides by the sea. The place has established itself especially in recent years as a celebrity hot spot and popular holiday resort of German tourists. Here you can find, especially in the high season, the elite and high-ranking society. At the exclusive parties the motto is: see and be seen. Besides the society, Kampen also offers a beautiful and picturesque nature with white sandy beaches and the legendary red cliff.

Insider tip: Sylt in winter and the elbow

You want to get out of the mass tourism and enjoy the island with its beauty and nature alone? Then we have two absolute insider tips to get a little closer to this goal. Sylt is very well known and especially in the summer months there are many crowds of people on the popular island. To escape this hustle and bustle, our first insider tip is the nature reserve Ellenbogen. This is located at the northernmost tip and promises peace, solitude and above all relaxation. Here you can come down and enjoy the time for yourself. Another insider tip is to travel in winter. This is rather unusual for a holiday by the sea, but in the winter months you can avoid the high prices and enjoy beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

Sylt in winter: few tourists and a beautiful sky

You read that right. Although the island is dominated by summer tourism and especially popular with the affluent society, this fact comes in handy during a trip in winter. For one, there are the lower prices. The island is known for high accommodation or restaurant prices, but this is usually only true in summer. If you plan to come to Sylt in winter, there will be no crowds and you can enjoy the beauty and nature in peace. Also the prices in accommodations and restaurants will be smaller due to the decreasing demand. And now the absolute insider tip! The winter sky over Sylt is breathtaking and beautiful. You can enjoy fantastic sunrises and sunsets and never forget this sight.

Elbow: rest and relaxation away from the crowds

The nature reserve Ellenbogen is the northernmost point of the island and an absolute must when you make a holiday on Sylt. Here you can relax, let your soul dangle alone and forget the stress of everyday life. Walk on the beach, in the dunes or make yourself comfortable in the sand. Enjoy the cold sea air and the solitude. Here you can escape the hustle and bustle and concentrate on yourself. From this point you can see as far as Denmark and, with a bit of luck, a few seals will visit you on your walk. So if you are on Sylt, a visit to the elbow is highly recommended and a real insider tip.

Beaches: Where are the most beautiful beaches?

The range of beaches on Sylt is very high. Depending on your needs and wishes, you can find your ideal beach and enjoy the day in the sun. In addition to some beaches for dogs or nudists, the island offers many opportunities for families with children and water sports or recreational activities. On the beach in Hörnum, for example, you can relax perfectly and let your soul dangle in a beach chair. Here the water is shallow and calm and you have the ideal opportunities to learn a water sport. If you prefer more action and a wider range of leisure activities, we would recommend the main beach of Westerland. Here you will find many restaurants, bars and a more extensive range of water sports.

Hörnum Oststrand: Shallow water and fewer tourists

Hörnum beach is located in the south of the island of Sylt and attracts many families with children every year during the summer months. The promenade is surrounded by many small restaurants and bars and there is a lighthouse and a harbour in the area. The beach offers white sand and very calm waters, which makes this part of the island ideal for learning how to windsurf and sail. Children and beginners can visit the sailing and surfing school and learn on the shallow water. Dogs are also welcome here! Hörnum’s eastern beach is considered very clean and the water quality is also good. In July and August, the occupancy rate is at its highest.

Just make yourself a picture of the beach in Hörnum and explore the beautiful surroundings before your visit!

Westerland main beach: beach chair, water sports & restaurants

The main beach of Westerland is located directly in the center of the island and invites every year anew many tourists and locals. The promenade is surrounded by many small restaurants, bars, cafes or shops for clothes and souvenirs. You have many possibilities to plan and enjoy your day at the beach. For example, rent a beach chair and relax with a good read. Or do you need action and adventure? No problem! On the main beach of Westerland you will find a wide range of water sports. Surfers, kiters and parasailers can let off steam here and spend an exciting day. Should the weather be bad, the “Sylter Welle” offers an indoor band as an alternative.

Holiday with children and dog – is that possible?

Holiday on Sylt with children and dog? Yes, that is possible. For both children and dog owners, the German island offers several attractions and areas to spend a great holiday. Our tip for a holiday with the dog is: avoid crowded beaches and go for a walk in the morning hours. You can’t go wrong with this in any case and you won’t disturb any other tourists. There are also some local activities for children, such as a mudflat hike or a tour in the Sagen forest. Here you learn a lot about the past of the island and the special natural events in a playful way. So there is something for the whole family.

Sylt with dog: dog beaches and pet-friendly accommodation

Of course you don’t have to leave your dog at home during your holiday on Sylt. On the contrary. On Sylt there are many offers and areas where you can ideally spend your holiday together with a dog. We recommend that you avoid the overcrowded beaches in the summer and prefer to go to quieter areas. Beaches on the tidal flats are usually less frequented by tourists and especially in the early morning hours you can watch the sunrise during a walk. Also the hotels and accommodations are in many cases very dog-friendly. If you inform yourself in advance, nothing should go wrong. However, keep in mind during your visit that your dog must be kept on a leash in nature reserves and that you should always be considerate of your fellow human beings.

Sylt with children: Mudflat hike, indoor swimming pool or Sagen forest

There are also many attractions for children on the island and you can make an ideal family trip here. The highlight is of course a mudflat walk, for which the island is ideal. There are walks for children and families so you can learn about the process. Another attraction is the Legend Forest of Sylt. Here you can playfully learn about the various legends of Sylt on a path about 200 metres long and find shade from the sun under the numerous trees. Should the weather not play along and an activity in nature not be possible, the Sylt wave is ideal as a substitute program.

Weather & Climate on Sylt: Temperatures and Precipitation

It doesn’t matter if it’s winter or summer. If you want to go on holiday, the weather should play along and fit into your plans. For example, if you are currently considering whether you should spontaneously start a short trip to Sylt, a look at the weather map would be advisable. You don’t want to pay money for accommodation and the journey, only to be unable to spend a day at the beach because it’s raining cats and dogs. We show you here the temperatures and the average precipitation of the important months, so that you can prepare yourself ideally.

High season temperature: June to September

June to September is when the island’s temperatures are at their highest. You can expect about 20°C and 7 hours of sunshine in August. In addition, the water temperature in this month is a pleasant 17 ° C. In June there are with 9 hours of sunshine per day the most sun in the whole year at about 18°C. The water temperature is only 13°C, so swimming in the sea might be a little too cold for some. During these summer months, you should expect an average of 9-12 rainy days per month. However, it is worth mentioning that there are very rarely complete rainy days on Sylt and the weather can change constantly throughout the day.

Low season temperature: October to May

As you have already experienced, it is an absolute insider tip to visit the beautiful island in winter. This is also true for months in autumn and spring. From October, the temperatures drop to about 12 ° C to -1 ° C in February. Also the sunshine hours become less and less and amount to only 2 hours per day in the months from November to January. You should also keep in mind that there might be more rainy days during your trip in winter. The most are on average in November with 14 days. Swimming can also be very fresh. If the water is still 13°C in October, the average water temperature is only 3°C in February. So this is not for everyone.

A real highlight of your stay in Rügen is a visit to the nature reserve of Ostrügen. The landscape and natural diversity takes up almost half the island and also includes the Jasmund National Park, located on the peninsula of the same name. Impressive cliffs, chalk cliffs and white sandy beaches characterize the picture.

Most beautiful beach resorts: holidays with children and dog

Of course, one of the main reasons that drives so many to Rügen every season are the wide, soft sandy beaches that stretch along the entire coast. To keep an overview or even to choose a favorite is almost impossible. Therefore, we have compiled a small list of the most beautiful, quietest, longest and most diverse beaches on Rügen for you.

Schaprode: Coveted real estate on the sandy beach

One of the oldest settlements on Rügen is Schaprode, the small town. The place has one of the few sandy beaches in West Rügen. Accordingly, there are also a lot of holiday homes to be found here, because all those who come to Rügen rely on proximity to the beach. You should also consider this if you are thinking of buying a holiday home on Rügen. The land and property prices in and around beach resorts are accordingly sought after. <hiddenlink href="https://fivmagazine.de/ferienhaus-traumhaus-am-meer-see-kaufen-bauen-vorteile-nachteile-tipps/" data-type="post" data-origin="de" data-origin-url="/?p=107203">Learn more about buying a holiday home here.</hiddenlink>

Göhren: Popular spa and holiday resort

One of the most sought-after areas on the island is the small town of Göhren in East Rügen. The long stretches of beach and the calming air and atmosphere make the place particularly popular. The town also has a lot to offer in terms of leisure activities. From adventure golf, popular photo spots to a bike rental that allows you to actively explore the town and especially the surrounding area, you will find everything that makes your holiday a special experience.

Sellin: Colourful starting place with pier and dog beach

Also an absolute perennial favorite among the Rügen resorts is the town of Sellin. Because the city has a lot to offer from a pier that reminds of the famous piers from England or the U.S., mini golf or a hand beach where your four-legged friend can really let off steam, the possibilities are almost limitless. Cultural heritage can be admired at the Amber Museum and the close proximity to the Hochufer hiking trail guarantees at least one day of action.

Insider tips: unexplored sights

Always exploring the tourist attractions can get boring in the long run, especially if you are not the first time on Sylt. In this case, it is a good idea to make a stop outside the standard places and areas. After all, the island is not huge and many things can easily be reached in a bike trip. Where you should definitely stop by we tell you here.

Chalk cliffs, Cape Arkona and Co. from above – Video

To get you in the mood for your stay, we have already put together an overview of what awaits you on the Baltic Sea island. Especially the famous chalk cliffs are admired by many onlookers every day.

Lietzow book station

Bookworms, vintage fans and nostalgics take note! On Rügen there is a very special place for you to go to. In Lietzow on Ostrügen there is one of the cutest little bookstores you can imagine. Here you can find everything from Schiller to J.K. Rowling in new and old garb. But also records are in the assortment. If you can’t get enough of the colourful covers and golden lettering from days gone by, this is the place for you.

Vintage car museum very close to the beach

We imagine an eventful day on Rügen like this. You start the day with a short round of laser tag, then at lunchtime to treat yourself to a small snack in one of the many Binzer restaurants and then spend a little time on the beach. In the afternoon you can stroll through the informative Oldtimer Museum and finish off the evening in a beach bar. Does this sound like a programme that interests you? Then you definitely have to go to Ostseebad Binz and spend at least one day there.

Pansevitz castle ruins: surroundings to relax in

From the lively town of Ralswiek you can reach the castle ruins of Pansevitz in just 15 minutes by car. The remains of the former castle are a place of peace and quiet. In addition, they stand for a piece of history, because actually this castle had survived the times of the existence of Rügen as a principality. However, during the Second World War, the citizens of Rügen had to get creative and for this reason they used the empty castle as building material. Thus, the townscape was created, which is offered there today.

The best beaches for kids, dogs and co.

Who goes to Rügen wants beach, nature and maybe a little action. The most beautiful places to relax and also everything where you can live out your sporty streak and enjoy the sea at the same time, we tell you here. In addition, you will find out where you can best travel with your four-legged friend.

Binzer Strand: Long fine sand beach

Very close to the Oldtimer Museum you will find a particularly beautiful white sandy beach on the east coast of Rügen. Not surprisingly, the beach was called Binzer Strand and stretches for kilometres down the east coast of the island. There is a free place guaranteed for almost everyone. Those who like sports and exercise will also be thrilled by the beach volleyball courts.

A mixture of pebble and sandy beach offers the dog beach of Sellin. Don’t worry, this beach is of course not exclusively for dogs, but on many public beaches on Rügen dogs are not particularly welcome. At most even forbidden. This means that careless dog owners face a hefty fine if they don’t abide by the regulations. The dog beach Sellin gives your four-legged friend the opportunity to really let off steam.

Always at the forefront is the staging of the story of Klaus Störtebeker. At the end of the 12th century he was famous and feared as a pirate on the Baltic Sea. This has helped him to great fame until today which at the same time has the consequence that until today his life from the activity as a pirate to the execution in 1406 is so well documented that his story is often dramaturgically recreated.

Itinerary to Rügen by ferry, car, train and more

A holiday on Rügen is a very special experience for the whole family, but in order to spend a few days on the beach you first have to make the journey to the beautiful island. To arrive in Rügen you have different options available, which we summarize for you below.

Crossing by ferry

The easiest way to get to the Baltic island is by ferry from Stahlbrode. From there, a car and passenger ferry crosses every 25-30 minutes to Glewitz in the southern part of Rügen. If you are looking for a snack after the crossing, you will be disappointed, because you will be welcomed in Glewitz by a beautiful beach, but it is recommended to drive a little further into the island for holiday apartments and gastronomy. There you will find much more accommodations and restaurants. Already the small town of Losenitz, a little northeast of Glewitz is well equipped. The drive takes only two minutes.

By train and long-distance bus to the island

From Strahlsund you can also easily get to Rügen. The regional train goes once across the island to the popular town of Ostseebad Binz. There you will find a variety of fine sandy beaches and many luxury hotels, as well as holiday apartments directly on the beach. There are also offers with the long-distance bus, which unfortunately take much longer than the journey by car and train.

This includes especially some tourist attractions, whose preservation one wants to guarantee in this way. This is why it is possible to drive to these attractions, but from a certain point on, one has to park the car and climb the rest of the way by bike and on foot. To make it easier for you, there are some park and ride facilities.

Osaka is one of Japan’s most famous cities and is located in the Kansai region, more precisely in Keihanshin, Japan’s second largest conurbation with a total population of 17.5 million. Of these, 2.7 million live in Osaka alone, closely followed by Kyoto and Kobe with about 1.5 million inhabitants each. Similar to Tokyo the city of Osaka is divided into 24 districts, including Fukushima. Further to Osaka belong the districts Higashisumiyoshi with its numerous shrines, monuments and temple ruins as well as Minato and Taishō.

Osaka in 4K: Almost as good as live!

[shortcode variable slug=”adsense”]

By the way: Osaka received its name officially only in 1868, although it is historically proven that the city was already called “Ozaka” in the Middle Ages. However, its original name is Naniwa and as “imperial residence city Naniwa” until the year 744 Japan’s capital. Since then Osaka has been a more important trade hub than ever, not least because of its excellent land and sea connections. In the meantime, Osaka was the most populous city in Japan, but Tokyo and Yokohama have meanwhile pushed Osaka to third place. In the 1990s, most of the large companies previously based in Osaka relocated their headquarters to rapidly growing Tokyo, which burst the economic bubble around Osaka and plunged many Japanese into bankruptcy and unemployment.

A little history… and tips for your first trip!

Due to the constant changes that the city has been exposed to over the centuries through wars, earthquakes and other natural disasters, Osaka has had the opportunity to reinvent itself every time. Today, the big city is a prime example of modernity and highly efficiently structured. The transport network, for example, is well thought-out, reliable, closely linked and affordable for everyone. This makes Osaka a place with an impressive variety of transport options. There are two airports in and near Osaka – the Kansai International Airport, built on an artificial island, and the smaller Itami Airport for domestic flights. From Kansai International Airport there is a rail connection connecting the airport with the cities of the region, including Osaka, of course. Osaka’s inner-city rail network is the second largest in Japan and almost identical in structure to the Tokyo Metro. Seven different railway companies operate the railways and trains in Osaka, and ownership seems rather fragile. Nevertheless, the entire transport system works perfectly – delays are not only not tolerated here, as in the rest of Japan, they simply do not exist!

Know already? In Osaka you pay by train according to route

By the way: in Osaka you pay depending on the distance covered, the shortest distance costs 200 Yen, so just 1,53 Euro. The JR Osaka Loop Line is one of the more popular routes as it circles – as the name suggests – once around the whole city. Thus, one gets easily and uncomplicated to every part of the city and saves the change to one of the other railways. The train stations per line per direction are simply gigantic – so you should definitely plan enough time to get from A to B. Those who prefer to save the effort and instead reach for their wallet can also treat themselves to a taxi as an alternative. There are no modern apps or vending machines – not yet! – but for that there are taxis literally on every corner – and most taxi drivers even speak a little English.

Tips and Insights for your trip to Osaka

Osaka – official partner of eight international cities

Chicago, USA

Hamburg, Germany

Milan, Italy

Melbourne, Australia

San Francisco, USA

Saint Petersburg, Russia

São Paulo, Brazil

Shanghai, China

Although Osaka has had its heyday as Japan’s commercial centre, the city still has a lot to offer culturally. For example, it is the most important city in terms of classical Japanese theatre. Among the sights of the city is the Tsūtenkaku, “the tower that reaches to the sky” with an impressive 103 meters height. The tower, which is loosely designed to resemble the Eiffel Tower in Paris, also provides the current weather forecast for the following day based on the colouring of the top of the tower. The 16th century Osaka Castle with its interior museum is also worth a visit and if you like the underwater field, you should definitely plan a visit to Kaiyūkan – one of the world’s largest publicly accessible aquariums!

Attractions in Osaka – La Santa Maria Cruiser, Owl Family Café, Dotonbori and more

Osaka sees itself as the anti-capital city – proud, cool, self-confident. Full of hospitality and with an exquisite cuisine. The passion for food in particular has a far-reaching historical background here. Hundreds of years ago, when Tokyo was still a military base and Kyoto was considered the imperial capital, Osaka was already known as “Japan’s cuisine”. Osaka is the home of soul food – in no other city in Japan do people spend more money on good food and the quality demands on food and restaurants are extreme. The people here are almost obsessed with food and drink and reinvent dishes seasonally.

Streetfood in culture imprinted Osaka

Street food can be found everywhere and there are always new and unusual creations on offer, alongside the traditional and local dishes for which Osaka is famous. In some restaurants, for example, there is the option “How you like it”, which you can select separately for each main course – and actually you can put together a selection of all available ingredients and garnishes and mix at the table yourself, however you like. There are no limits to your creativity – pancakes with pork belly and shrimps in sesame sauce? No problem. There is even a separate term for Osaka’s culinary culture: “kuidaore” – which means “eat until you burst”. The distinctive eating and enjoyment culture invites you to linger and so it is not uncommon to meet people late into the night in restaurants and bars – in Osaka nobody has to be alone and the last people stagger in the morning hours to work or home, depending on the job.

Kuidaore! The best street food in Dotonbori

The best local delicacies in Osaka

Takoyaki

Literally translated as “grilled octopus”, Takoyaki are small pieces of octopus with pickled ginger and spring onions in dough – a special Takoyaki pan provides the spherical structure. In addition there is still the Takoyaki sauce or alternatively Majonese, seaweed or dried Bonito. Takoyaki is available at every street food stand in Osaka and is one of the most popular snacks there.

Teppanyaki

Teppanyaki translated means “grilling on a metal plate” and describes more a certain cooking technique than a certain dish. The special thing about Teppanyaki is that the customer can fully witness the preparation process and there are even restaurants that specialize solely in this special customer service. For lovers of good food, anticipation is an essential component and, moreover, cooks in Japan are generally very respected and have to undergo many years of training before they can really call themselves chefs. There is no limit to Teppanyaki, but usually either high quality beef or seafood is used.

Okonomiyaki

Okonomiyaki is visually reminiscent of pancakes and is widespread throughout Japan. Therefore, there are many different variants of this dish. Typical for Okonomiyaki in Osaka is the grated cabbage. Together with a variety of other ingredients, including squid, prawns, octopus or various kinds of meat, the cabbage is put into dough and cooked. Of course there is a special Okonomiyaki sauce and alternatively mayonnaise, seaweed or bonitos.

Kushikatsu

Kushikatsu is actually anything that can be baked in dough and fried on a skewer – meat and various vegetables are often the basis for this dish. But there are also very creative variations with fried strawberries, for example. There’s nothing in food technology that Osaka doesn’t have!

Kitsune Udon

Anyone who has ever eaten at a Japanese restaurant will certainly be familiar with Udon. For everyone else: Udon are thick, light noodles – usually made from wheat – and a component of many hot soups. Kitsune Udon is a variant of these soups, in which the Udon noodles are supplemented with fried tofu. A simple recipe, but not the less popular in Japan, as it has a mythological background. For Kitsune is another word for the Japanese fox, which in Japan is considered a lucky charm and whose favourite dish is allegedly fried tofu. The fox, on the other hand, is the sacred animal of the Shinto goddess Inari, who stands for fertility.

Streetfood Season 9 – Episode 8: Kitsune Udon in Osaka
