Become a model. Many young women dream of floating like Victoria’s Secret Angel on a glittering catwalk, or how to model GiGi Hadid for big brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Co. But not everyone has what it takes and in the real world of modeling, there is far more to it than the things that show us formats, such as GNTM. In order to bring a little clarity into the conditions and the true model life, I summarized here the most important facts.
Fact # 1 Requirements for Models
Of course, the cliché is already a bit that all models must be thin, because except for the Curvy Models, you should be in shape as a model. But what is important, the so-called hunger models no longer wants to have an agency these days. It is much more about living healthy, sporty and balanced. Of course you need certain dimensions as a model. 90-60-90 is not so outdated in the modelbussiness. For the German market models can also be ‘curvy’ means a 94 he hips or a 65 waist are here in sufficient. The reason why these measurements exist is simply the fact that designers usually tailor their shoots or catwalks to a certain size, which the models must then fit into. The problem with the dimensions is usually that many of the bones and physique are not designed to reach these dimensions. Therefore, one should not be too strict with the dimensions, because even the size is sometimes made by a beautiful face in the shade. Of course, the size is very important, but there are also many professional models that are actually too small, but have such an expressive face that they still work well. In summary, it means that it comes down to the mixture when modeling. The measurements should be correct in a certain range, the size should not be less than 1.71m in women and the face must convince. It is also important – Model does not mean pretty. There are many models with an androgynous or special face, which we would not classify as beautiful at first glance, but still work great as a model!
Fact # 2 Modeling agencies and how do they actually earn their money?
Model agencies are the nuts and bolts of aspiring models. They help a photographer find his first test shootings, teach jobs and organize everything around modeling. But which agencies are good and professional and which ones should you avoid? There are some key facts to make a good agency. For example, a professional agency will never take money from you. Even if this is made so firm in the contract, this is not right. A good modeling agency also does not tell you that you have to go hungry or force yourself into things you do not want, such as a haircut, self-tanner or anything else. A good agency does not let you sign a contract that specifies a minimum term, or states that you are not allowed in any other agencies. As a professional model it is normal to be represented by several agencies from different countries. So-called ‘exclusivity contracts’ are not legal, because you are independent and can be represented in as many agencies as you want. Important, if you apply, you do not need a big portfolio of you. Simple polaroids are enough. You can just make these in front of a simple wall at home. But how do agencies actually earn their money? It’s easy, because modeling agencies give you jobs and get 20% agency commission from your customers, as a commission. If you earn 400.00 Eur netto on a job, your agency will get 80.00 Eur from the customer. Important, you will not be deducted from the fee, but the customer pays the commission, not you!
Fact # 3 Build Book as New Face
As NewFace, it is important to build a large, comprehensive book. Most of the test shoots are done with photographers. In the so-called TfP shootings, all involved (photographer, visa, model) use the images for their book, but no one has to pay the other. Here it is important that the quality of the pictures is correct. So just look for good photographers or discuss the shootings with your agency. Best suited for your book shoots with a natural setting, not too much make-up, not too fancy clothes or accessories, it should go around you and show you from a good side. Depending on how professional the photographers are, it may also be that they want to have money from you for a test. This is worthwhile only for the best, but then it is a good investment in yourself. Watch out, you have to organize with photographers who want to make lewd photos of you, or the shoot without your agency. If it’s a professional photographer, he has no problem communicating with your agency in advance. Since you’re on a shoot and the photographer is expecting something you do not want, say no, because you do not have to go along with everything and beautiful pictures will only be created if you feel comfortable in your own skin anyway.
